@tukicat1399 actually as a fan from hearing their 1st song, they were only called Flowers for their 1st album, which was called Icehouse. Funnily enough, because of our Scottish host here, he had to change the bands name after its release owing to a Scottish band having the same name, so he picked the albums name for his band & the rest is history
The people of some countries proudly call themselves patriotic while we Aussies will tell you we love our country. It's in the music, in our slang, in our attitude to life and our diversity. We aren't perfect but, even with our flaws we are proudly Aussie.

I'm Australian. The first time I went overseas, I was sitting in a hostel in Jerusalem one night. This song came on a music TV station that was playing in the background. I felt so homesick.

I met the lead singer of Gangajang around 10-15 years ago at the birthday party function for a family he was friends with. I had the privilege of having a chat with him. He was a genuinely humble, lovely man who appreciated the kind words I said about his songwriting.
The thing I notice when people react to songs about Australia is that the reactors actually feel our pride even though the aren't from Australia.

I'm an Australian volunteer fire fighter. This song speaks to me of the catastrophic, deadly fires we face each summer. "They burnt you black." But it's my country, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I consider this song to be one of the greatest, by one of the greatest bands to come out of Australia. A little note : Australias exports camels to the east and around the world, the only country in the world to have disease free camels. Great reactions mate.
I feel the first long key before any instruments come in is like a call to arms. U hear that & u know exactly the song & it starts the tingles all over ya body, a tear to the eye & the automatic feeling of pride, just like I Still Call Straya Home & I Am Strayan. Unlike the other two songs that mention our country by name, a lot of people outside of Straya wouldn't understand what the Great Southern Land actually is or where it is. Like many people around the world these days, especially American's don't know what or where Down Under is. I've watched many mainly American reaction channels that are confused as they have no idea not only the words being sung but also get really confused with the two words Down Under itself.
Australia celebrated in 2022 This great song and its creator Ivor Davies by naming the new section/gallery of the national Museum of Australia after the title of this song . We had the privilege of attending the grand opening with Ivor Davies performing in live performance - an unforgettable experience

Being a full blood Australian boy { old boy } every time when that song came out it was turned up full blast and the hair on the back of my neck would stand up and it just made you feel so proud. We were the best country in the world but now we've got all of this shit arriving and bringing the grief's and dismay and the hatred to the like's of which were never once here. The thing about nostalgia is it never was as wonderful as people remember. Attitudes like yours is sad.
I think the issue isn't the "shit arriving" but more you not wanting to adapt. We live in an ever changing world and whether you like it or not it's going to keep on changing. TBH, if everything was the same as 40 years ago I think Australia would be worse off and everyone would be bored of the same thing all the time. I look back to 1982 and feel that was a great time, but I was only 15 years old and with not a care in the world. Life gets in the way and before you know it we're getting old and decrepit and hating on the lives we have now because we can't do the things we used to be able to do.
I have some great foreign friends and I have no grudge or ill feeling towards them. I sympathise with them for the ordeals that they went through back in their home lands and have come here for a better life. The shit I refer to are the ones that go around with their machete's, knive's, other weapon's and bring their countries unrest here to our 's. They need to be rounded up, all accounted for and sent back on the first plane off the tarmac. Like those Palestinean mad bastards, don't tell me you agree with them and you also hate the jew's. I have a jewish son in law and a finer person you wouldn't meet. I only have a problem with the rotten piece's of pig shit and the goat rooters and the child molesters and anyone who doesn't deserve the oxygen that they breath. I've had one daughter who was beaten by 2 muslim arseholes in Canberra because she wore a short skirt. She was beaten in front of her friend when they coming out of a shop so don't you tell me that I have the wrong idea's.

That video was probably better than the actual Icehouse video except for the fact that we missed seeing the singer’s majestic mullet😳🤣

I was really shocked that a vid clip of them walking thru Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in North West Sydney would actually get close to winning... Dunno who i would've voted for tho
Mitch Tambo, an Australian Indigenous singer, has produced a modern version of this song with Reigan Derry, which is sung in a combination of English and Gamilaraay Indigenous language, which is very worth checking out. It takes the song to a whole new level of amazing sound.
They keep playing that version on the radio at work.
It's a brilliant reworking of Great Southern Land.

As an Aussie, one of my favorite Aussie Songs of all time. It defines Australia in my eyes, especially as an 80's kid.
Fun fact, when the lead singer and songwriter Iva Davies told his kids he used to be a rock star, and they didn’t believe him. Until he got out all the awards, albums, old clips etc 😂😂😂
The biggest shock for them might have been the mullet.

I'm a huge Icehouse fan. They were originally called Flowers, their first album was called Icehouse. Unfortunately they had to change their name because Flowers was already taken at the time so they adopted the name of their first album instead. Iva Davies is the mad genius behind all of their music .Great Southern Land is our unofficial national anthem. Should check out "We can get together", "No Promises", "Crazy", "Electric Blue", "Walls" and my favourite "Icehouse" from the Flowers album. The White Heat album is one of the most comprehensive "best of" albums ever and is well worth a listen.

Iva Davies and Icehouse are the most underrated talents of our country, his genius and the combined musical talent put them in a league of their own, I loved them from the first album while they where still called Flowers, they are still my favourite Aussie group and they are better than any import, I simply do not understand why they did not become more popular, not just at home, but on the world stage.

"Walls" was my first time hearing Icehouse, or The Flowers as they were, back in 1980. I was obsessed with it.
"Icehouse", "Don't Believe Anymore", "Trojan Blue" and "Man Of Colours" are among my faves.

Ice house were called Flowers until they released a song called Ice House, & because there was an American band also called Flowers, they changed their name. Best move they made.
I saw them as Flowers back in the early days at the Marconi Club in NSW - loved them ever since.
Aussies aren't the same type of patriotic that people from the US, but we're patriotic in our own way. Our landscapes, our culture, our music, and our cuisine are what we're truly proud of. We're not super outspoken about it, but there's a reason people on youtube reacting to Australia get so much love. We're proud of our country, even with its flaws, and seeing other people appreciate it hits super hard for us.

I retired out to Adelaide early 2022, absolutely wonderful place, everyone so friendly. They can grow or make anything, the massive difference is that the weather allows you so much more time sitting outside in the evenings. oh and the wines.........

This song is often played during the Australia Day fireworks. I like how they incorporated Aborginal "clap sticks" in this one. Icehouse always had songs with intelligent lyrics. One of my favourites was" Man Of Colours" - haunting and poetic song about an artist. Got to love the oboe solo.
Iva Davies is a classically trained oboist.
Michael Paynter does a lovely version of Man of Colours with the band, definitely worth checking out if you haven’t heard it already 😊

This video is used by the tourism industry to promote Australia , and the good thing is everywhere scenically depicted is available to the public anytime and for free , granted some places involve some travelling but all are worth the effort .
I moved to Australia 37 years ago. I love my country. The people are warm and welcoming and wickedly hilarious. God bless Australia, indeed! Icehouse's "Man of Colours" remains my favourite Icehouse album. "Electric Blue", "Nothing Too Serious", these songs take me back to my younger Aussie summers ❤ Not to mention Daryl Braithwaite's "One Summer" and Gang Gajang's "Sounds of Then (This Is Australia)"!

I was born 1956 Adelaide Australia... lived through decades of music pre 1950s till now 2023 and the late 1980's stands out as Australia's most iconic as we pumped out a heap of unforgettable bands and solo artists that you just can't help yourself to jump up and dance on the tables.
As an Aussie, it took years to grasp the depth of Aboriginal culture and their struggles. Respect to the original custodians; they've done an amazing job nurturing this land, maintaining its richness, balance, and health. Incredible natural landscapes abound. I can’t explain to you that feeling of returning home from being overseas, (I may be bias because I’m from Sydney) but there’s nothing like flying over that harbour 🙏❤️🥺 best country in the world.
One of the best Australian songs ever written. You sort of forget about it, until you hear it again and the words and the music, epic. Ivor Davis was classically trained. Great writer. I feel more and more recently, like I am part of this magic land also, with evocative images like these, who wouldn't, and my family did not come out here until about mid 1800's!

There’s a poem called “My country” by Dorothea McKellar that expresses this so well.
I think one (among many other) reason that australia has produced so many fantastic artists and amazing pieces of music over the years comes down to our isolation.
For so long we were neglected by international touring acts due to the prohibitive costs of visiting our shores and because the big record labels were based in London, New York and LA, it was extremely difficult for Australian artists to be recognised without leaving their friends, families and support networks behind.
I think if the A&R teams for the big records had invested a little more time and money into Australia and Australian artists in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s a lot of household Australian acts would have become massive overseas - Icehouse definitely being one of those groups. They had an amazing new wave pop rock sound and Ira Davies songwriting is top class.
The land is the inspiration for artists. You can't help but be amazed. It evokes many great feelings that you want express.
That song still gives me goose bumps I love my country and Icehouse sums it perfectly.
I'm not overly patriotic, but when travelling overseas for a few months, I heard this song and stood in a street sobbing like a baby. Brilliant song that somehow manages to capture the FEEL of the many isolated and spacious landscapes in Australia.

i used to follow them across melbourne in the 80's. it was a great pub culture, ice house, pseudo echo, Kids in the kitchen, real life, models, jo io zep and the falcons. the list was endless. wherever they were playing. we were there. its a music pub scene that wont ever repeat.

My best memory of this epic song was hearing it booming out as an accompaniment to the Sydney New Year’s Fireworks. Must have been 20 years ago at least but the moment has stayed with me.
Every time I hear this song I can smell the bush & get vivid memories of hiking. Good vibes.

I am 67 and Icehouse (Flowers) has been a favotite band of mine for 40 odd years back in those days we had so much Aussie talent to choose from. We just completed a 6 month trip around Australia with our caravan and all of these places can definately be found. The difference is if you get there when its raining or overcast or you dont have a drone to film them from above then they may not be exactly like the video suggests.. As an Aussie I am still touched by the words and the meaning behind this song even without the nice video. Keep in mind that half of the people who react to this probably havent seen more of Australia than the area that they live in or they werent even born when the song came out..

Living on the worlds largest Island, being Australia. I do love the fact we can drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean without needing a passport or going through any boarders. And the country shows so many beautiful, and varied sunsets and sun rises, driving from the very Souther to our most Northerly point. We are a very lucky country, and is comes out in our songs and music.
I've always believed I must've done something mega special in a past life, to have been lucky enough to be born in this majestic country: the greatest paradise on the planet. This video renewed that belief. Thanks!

For sooooo long this was a workout song for me - you can work at the slow beat or double it up. Been a fave since it 1stcame out. Iva Davies [lead singer] is brilliant - so many Icehouse songs to explore "hey Little Girl" "Electric Blue" "Can't Help Myself" "Nothing too Serious" "We Can Get Together" just great talent. Some of the unusual sounds are trying to reproduce Aboriginal instruments - some synthesize didgeridoo, drums imitate clapping sticks etc. so probably unique sounding to others and we are used to it.

AC/DC, Cold Chisel and INXS rightly get a lot of the attention as our biggest rock bands from my early years (late 70s to early 90s) - but we had so many other bands almost as good, with Icehouse being up there. Suggestions for good Aussie rock songs are Choir Boys - "Run to Paradise", and Hoodoo Gurus - "Like Wow Wipeout"

Australia has a lot of Celtic traditions so the music and word play are just a different form of the Irish pub musicians.... well it was back in the 80's. You even tend to see Bagpipes thrown in. Australia is a British gangbang of traditions.
I'd have to agree with this. I'm a 60s kid, and my parents lived through the Depression, and quite often I'll say something, and ppl will say "are you of British heritage?", or "are you a Pom?", but it's sayings that my parents used to come out with... old British sayings and whatnot.

Legendary band … never forget seeing Icehouse live in Western Australia. It was so fricken hot 🥵 (47°C or 117°F) that when Iva Davies walked out on stage - expecting to see everyone leaving, he was blown away that we were all still there partying out. So he organised the local fire trucks to blast the whole crowd. We were absolutely soaking wet and had a killer day …
