It's a great song. The synth really captures the eerie, perplexed nature of Australia. It's beauty, it's extreme ancientness, it's otherworldliness to the coloniser. An esoteric landscape.

    The lyrics are superb.
Standing at the limit of an endless ocean
Stranded like a runaway, lost at sea
City on a rainy day down in the harbor
Watching as the grey clouds shadow the bay
Looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you
This is not the way that I remember it here
Anyone will tell you its a prisoner island
Hidden in the summer for a million years
Great Southern Land, burned you black
So you look into the land and it will tell you a story
Story 'bout a journey ended long ago
Listen to the motion of the wind in the mountains
Maybe you can hear them talking like I do
They're gonna betray you, they're gonna forget you
Are you gonna let them take you over that way
Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
You walk alone, like a primitive man
And they make it work, with sticks and bones
See their hungry eyes, its a hungry home
I hear the sound of the stranger's voices
I see their hungry eyes, their hungry eyes
Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
They burned you black, black against the ground
Standing at the limit of an endless ocean
Stranded like a runaway, lost at sea
City on a rainy day down in the harbor
Watching as the grey clouds shadow the bay
Looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you
This is not the way that I remember it here
Anyone will tell you its a prisoner island
Hidden in the summer for a million years
Great Southern Land, in the sleeping sun
You walk alone with the ghost of time
Where they burned you black, black against the ground
And they make it work with rocks and sand
I hear the sound of the strangers voices
I see their hungry eyes, their hungry eyes
Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
You walk alone, like a primitive man
You walk alone with the ghost of time
    And they burned you black
    Yeah, they burned you black
    Great Southern Land
    Great Southern Land
    Great Southern Land
    Great Southern Land

I was born in Southern Australia - and I used to have a mild existential crisis when I went swimming down there. Knowing the next landmass in a straight line was Antarctica, and there was nothing but this huge endless ocean in between. It's a wild country.

my picks for Icehouse songs would be "I believe", 'Hey Little Girl", "Icehouse", "No Promises", and "Man of Colours". As for their biggest hit I think it was "Electric Blue" written by Iva Davies (lead singer) and John Oates (from Hall and Oats). Icehouse is one of the first groups if not the first to use the Fairlight synth (CMI).

This is really great, a good classic Aussie anthem. I think you will really enjoy listening to their songs from back when they were Flowers, such as I Can't Help Myself, and We Can Get Together, or perhaps I am just being nostalgic. Two other revered Aussie anthems you should check out are Wide Open Road by The Triffids and Sounds Of Then by Gang Gajang....both really quite evocative. Also, Cattle and Cane and Streets Of Your Town by The Go-Betweens.

I remember seeing Ice House when they were still The Flowers at the Sylvania Hotel in Sydney in early 1981. They were supported by The Church. Both bands were fledglings at the time but went on to become much bigger and gave us great music throughout the 80's and beyond. Great job boys. I am new to the Thamesmen but I am loving it. Thank you.

Funny story about Icehouse. They used to be called The Flowers. Some of the girls in my high school were obsessed. They spent every recess and lunch break writing out pages and pages of "The Flowers" in rainbow colours. They had a stack you couldn't jump over to send to the band... Then they changed the name to Icehouse. The girls were devistated.

I love their work. This song is an absolute fav. 'We Can Get Together' is an early one and my number one from them.
I read a few comments mentioning the name change. They had to change once they had international success as there already was a band Flowers in Scotland. Their album at the time was called Icehouse, (2 words on the cover Icehouse and Flowers) so to save money by not having to change a whole lot of printed albums it became Flowers Album by Icehouse.

    ICEHOUSE
    Electric Blue
    Man Of Many Colours
    Crazy
    Hey Little Girl
    ...and many, many more.
Also, experiencing being in the outback on your own, or apart from a group and just in quiet solitude, you can feel, and kind of hear internally, a throbbing rhythm and tone that is imitated by this 'Great Sothern Land' piece of music. I don't know if it was intentional. It's been experienced by quite a few but it's not the same as just hearing your own heartbeat as some speculate. I remember experiencing this as a child from 8 to 11 years, when wandering out and about away from our home base boundary,, and just accepting it as natural. The noisy city I moved to later on ironically seemed silent to me at first when I noticed that, internally felt and heard, steady rhythmic pulse was missing.. The natural rhythm played, by the people who've been occupying the land since ancient times, through the didgeridoo, seems akin to this vibration as well. It also fits with the rhythm of the pulsating heat hazes seen over vast empty distances.. Icehouse has other versions using the didgeridoo and also native clap sticks which can be heard in this version so maybe it was deliberate.

I know you guys talk about the cliche Oz with red dirt, outback ect .. and most of is but it’s also got some lush green mountainous areas like northern NSW & Southern Queensland, but there’s also whole areas like Northern Queensland that is full on tropical with sugar cane fields & high mountains.
with places like the Daintree Rainforest that is the oldest in the world.
Towns like Cairns & Port Douglas thrive on Tropical Tourism along with Great Barrier Reef , we have no winters like down south at the moment that is freezing cold .
Something to keep in mind if you’re ever travelling to Oz.

The last time I saw Icehouse live was back in the mid 90s. The studio version of Great Southern Land is also quite good. There is a video which pairs the song with a lot of shots of Australia, and together they capture the 'beauty' of Australia. Classical guitarist John Williams.
    Herbie Flowers on base
Francis Monkman on organ and piano.
The drummer now plays for a few big jazz bands AND a major symphony orchestra.
The leed guitarist was an Aussie who was unknown but brilliant , and could almost match the great John Williams on classical guitar.

This band was originally called "Flowers" and their debut album was "Icehouse". In the late '70's early 80's, Disco had peaked, and mainstream music was at a crossroad. The Punk anti-disco movement started, as did Synth-pop and New Romantics. Iva Davies and Flowers produced an album that was probably classified as New Wave, but as is common, branding something doesn't come anywhere near describing it. "Icehouse" by Flowers, is one of the greatest albums of its time, and for me, all-time. It still holds up well now to any scrutiny. Icehouse, the band that followed, was much more commercial.

It’s possible that either this song, Crazy or Electric Blue was their most iconic.
Their singles were all catchy and radio friendly, although I tended to prefer their earlier songs as they were a little more quirky like Walls, We Can Get Together and Can’t Help Myself, all Synth Pop but with an Aussie twist.
A fun fact (unless you were an Australian bass player in the early 80s) was that they imported Guy Pratt from the UK to be their bass player for the early to mid-80s. Guy is a fantastic bass player, having played on Pink Floyd’s Delicate Sound Of Thunder and Pulse tours, Madonna’s Like A Prayer album, and a stack of other super high-profile artists both live and in studio.
The thing is, I saw him on a music-themed game show in Australia called Spicks And Specks and they queried why he was brought over here to play in Icehouse and he said that someone in the Icehouse band or management or their record company didn’t think that there were any sufficiently talented bass players in Australia (umm… ouch?). Not that this was Guy’s belief, he was just relating how he got the gig, but a comedian on the same show who was himself a weekend warrior bass player, pointed out that for pretty much any Flowers/Icehouse single you can think of, the bass parts consist of eighth notes that are lucky to change less than once per bar, and usually sat on the same note for two or four bars. So, having Guy join Icehouse as a bass player was sort of like getting Al Pacino to come and take a small part in your local community theatre’s production of Arsenic And Old Lace.
