This guy is a living legend. He didn't even break a sweat. Was this piece improvised? Kind of felt like it was. How easy this guy accelerates like it's nothing is praise worthy.
He was able to do things at 9 years of age that at 48 I still can't do. Some people just have "it" and he's one of them. I've followed him all through his career and I'm a fan. And considering how much I normally hate drum solos, I can happily sit through his because they tell more of a story than simply telling how how many chops he has. I love him.
@@adamnicol4271 Yeeeeah, so it can actually be both. So (an actual correction): He was trained by one of the greatest drummers of all time, Dennis Chambers and has subsequently become great in his own right.
@@LearsiMusic1 why is it about winning instead of growing? It should get you excited that there's a lot more knowledge about how to play drums that you can get to apply to your drumming.
First off, this video was post 4 days ago as of today (March 22nd, 2107) and it has 40,464 views!!! That is INSANE!!! Secondly, Tony's solo was off the charts, literally!!! The things that he's able to do is so unconventional, but yet it almost seems normal. Thirdly, his combinations come from another time and space!!! Lastly, I always said that Tony Royster, Jr. was thee torch bearer that led all of the new young drummers (and some old ones) into the new millennium. We're 17 years in it and he's still leading the way!!!
So groooooooovy !! That's not just a technical solo, it's a groovy solo. And that's why it's so good ! I actually don't like "technical" solos. But here, it's more like a song. Especially the beginning ! Cheers
Without a doubt, this man is going down in history as one of the greats. I'll stand by this 100%. Granted this wasn't his best solo but who cares. Take into consideration his chops, licks, and the way he implements basic rudiments and turns them up a couple notches and manipulates them onto the set. He's iconic.
It’s called a fivelet or formally known as a quintuplet. It’s a rhythmic subdivision that’s become more and more popular in modern jazz drumming which is definitely something up Tony Royster’s alley.
Super tasteful, the manipulation of motives was so on point, dynamics, phrasing, and plenty of space... everything I want in a solo - stoked to hear more
Every time I watch Tony play, I can't help but giggle at astonishment! I absolutely love this guy. I've learned so much just by listening to him speak, and watching him play. Less is more, which is what I think makes this drum solo so great. Creativity should always dominate speed, not that speed isn't impressive, but being creative is what matters the most as a musician. Save your special tricks for occasion, because that makes them more impressive.
Wow... I usually hate watching Drum Solos, and find them boring and obnoxious. But this, this was the coolest drum solo ever! This guy is such an inspiration and I just want to say great job man! There wasn't a single part that I didn't like!
You hate watching drum solo's? Fuck off. The video title has drum solo in it. Why would you click it? Some people are so ignorant. Secondly, This is one of tony's worst ones.
There are so many great great drummers out there only most of us mere mortals could dream of attaining, but this man has to be the best of the best just incredible how he can separate his feet and hands in different tempos and parts and put it all together. plus his speed licks are about as fast as anyone out there.
His Evolution Drum Solo, & were he doe's, a solo jam with Thomas Lang, that's a Nice Drum Solo Jam, Drum's are such a cool thing, i'm so Glad 2 be watching Drum's, i never get board of them, They alway's keep me going, Thank's for this.
years ago i watch a clip of video of a young little kid playing amazing drums ... and now in youtube era i found him again, even more amazing as an adult ^_^
Personally, I think the solo was pretty awesome he had some dope concepts that he developed. But I also think you can have a negative opinion about something without implying that you can do better. People that didn't like the solo are allowed to say so without without being told "get off your high horse he's one of the best drummers in the world you can't play like him"
I just watched this like 5 times in a row. This is why I love TRJ. He actually had something Musical to say instead of just the same fast technical solo everyone else is doing. That shit at the end was funny as hell.
Buddy Rich no doubt would shake his hand, acknowledge his superiority. Tony royster jr is, in my opinion the best drummer I've ever seen. He was better than most drummers when he was only 12!!!!
Just wow,, the thing is one guy mentioned Royster under one of Ghana's finest drummer Paa Kow drum videos and said they share some similarities,,,, so I searched and being my first time watching Royster am amazed I think Drumeo should invite Paa Kow,, he's a Ghanaian international drummer with a unique style and he sounds spiritual on sets
speechless.. He always amazes me every time I watch him.. It's crazy how time flies watching your video when he was 12 and completely amazed me then.. He is an awesome drummer to be so young.. I would love to see him in concert with his band. Don't know if they are traveling but it's on my bucket list to see him live..
Claude have mercy, that "thing" (for lack of the proper term) he was doing with the hi-hat at 3:30ish made me go cross eyed. I've never seen a snare set out there like that either.
There are so many extraordinary drummers but for me this guy is on another planet and has taken over the mantle from Buddy Rich in terms of standing out from the rest, for me he has everything in his arsenal, the only one that comes close im my opinion in terms of the different multi layered timing patterns used within his soloing is Thomas Lang who is just a metronome, but this guy puts the human in the machine. Making the impossible look simple! 😎🙄
It's crazy to me that 166 people clicked the dislike button. Tony has serious chops. Dude is a world class drummer and he clearly demonstrated that in this video, there is no doubt!
I remember seeing a video of this guy as a kid in the late 90s. On VHS. Cool to see he's still at it. Anyone know what kind of cymbal is above his third rack Tom?
I am usually not a huge fan of drum solos but I really enjoyed this. He demonstrated different skills and techniques but still kept it musical.
His cross-overs are insane. I can do a cross-over but not that nonchalant, fluid and smooth. He makes it look so fucking easy
Drum solo is awesome thing in hand of great drummers
Which is why I love drummers like Tony Royster Jr. - dude knows how to get deep in the pocket but also has a super solid foundation to pull from.
This guy is a living legend. He didn't even break a sweat. Was this piece improvised? Kind of felt like it was. How easy this guy accelerates like it's nothing is praise worthy.
Seb van Dijk if you follow him on instagram you'll find some of his warm-up doodling and they are insane.
Seb van Dijk I think there’s a little bit of improvisation in every drum solo.
I think this was Tony just messing around and actually getting a bit bored lol

Didn't think I'd see you here. Happy prepping!

Finally, someone who can tune DW drums and make them sound good. Great playing, nice story-telling, great production. Cool musical use of electronics.
Steve Holmes I hate DW drums the sound like big empty cans ... I agree his are tuned nice 👍🏾 other than this I never hear a good sounding dw kit
I agree they are beautiful sounding drums when tuned right, however the audio is EQ’d massively
Tuning drums is easy man. just put a new emad 2 head on my bassdrum retuned it and its punchy and has shit tons of low end :)
Like thomas lang says, tune to the feel of the drum, not the tone

It's like bassdrum triplets, but instead of 3 notes, there are 5. Never heard it before.
I don't think he really thinks of the rhythms he plays I think it just happens and he has the ability to play whatever he thinks of
It’s called a fivelet or formally known as a quintuplet. It’s a rhythmic subdivision that’s become more and more popular in modern jazz drumming which is definitely something up Tony Royster’s alley.
Everything about Tony’s setup, style and sound is perfect!
Tony R. is my personal favorite :)! I love how he can play anything, any style, that he just does not give a f*** and has fun.
That snare sounds amazinggggg! And solo

Dylan Volker this sucked compared to his best solos, recommend you check them out (he played a killer solo when he was 11)

Christopher Hawkins 100% agree with the "ill click on a video with a title I hate" just why would ya do it.
Been drumming since elementary school. In my fifties now. All I can say after watching him is, WOW!
The feel and groove in this solo is a nice change from all those double bass, speed-centric drum solos.
Such a technically packed sense of groove! Absolutely amazing

Change my mind...I'll wait.
