Imagine you're making a record and you need a drummer. This guy comes in, listens to your song once, and records a perfect drum track in one take... Unreal.
This guy is THE definition of a professional drummer. Coherent and repeated parts written on the spot with amazing fills and improvisation. Dude is amazing!
Absolutely, the only change I'd really make is to have him playing his part with Tempesta's energy from the original part, really hammering the drums. Other than that, he really brought a lot to the song.
It's funny to hear him turn the song into almost a big stadium anthem, instead of the industrial metal song it was. I feel he brings a light/positive energy to an otherwise brooding/droning song.
Everything was fine… …except the fact that he refuses to or is unable to CRASH THE RIDE… what is this little “tappity tappity tap tap” bullsht? I don’t need to hear the bell nor a “ping” during the heavy chorus, slam the side of your stick into that thing on quarter notes and ride the damn ride already!
I am not a musician nor a drummer by any means. But I truly love this series. I have a better appreciation the genius that Frank has to dissect a song like this and put his own spin on it. Great video!!
@@jonathancapps1103one of my favorite quotes is from Taylor Hawkins on the Foo Fighters documentary Back and Forth: " 'Taylor, what's it like to be a rockstar?' 'F*ck you, I'm not a rockstar, I'm a musician!"

In my early 20s I was a singer/songwriter and recorded about 20 songs that had Frank Bellucci on the drums. He came to my producer's studio in Dix Hills, Long Island - listened to each song once and knocked out an amazing drum track for each song like it was nothing. An incredible musician, so cool to see him on here!
This is a fucking masterpiece. His accents and change of moods fits this song so well. How he builds on the verses by later adding the tom hits, the chorus kick accents the vocal runs perfectly. He actually adds the break on the last verse to add more effect than constantly doing it. The toms on DOITBABY make it feel like a dance hit, which makes that vocal line so much more fun. A Halloween Day miracle.
The different dynamics on the ride between 5:30 and 6:30, where on the latter he is mixing in more bell hits is just... masterful. The tom fills, the super tasteful pedal hats and flams in the breaks and just how incredibly in the pocket he is, amazing.
That was absolutely mind-blowing. He completely nailed the feel of the song and gave a performance genuinely good enough to be on the record. Incredible.

Right?! I love the original and this was an incredible cover that I'd listen to on any drum youtubers channel over and over again. That tom pattern was genius.
I'm struggling to believe the bit... how did he not know this song?!? He absolutely NAILED the (I think) 3 breaks in the 2nd half of the song. I haven't been playing music as long as this fella (only 30 years on my end) but, straight up, if that was a legitimate first hear, then it was a ridiculously great performance.
@timhoferer8822 Frank is obviously a professional with years of session work under his belt. Like, the first thing he did was create a lead sheet. The lead sheet isn't just a roadmap through the song; the act of writing it informs your muscle memory of things like song structure, breaks, accents, etc. This, plus his experience, helps make the performance extremely clean. Dirk Verbeuren's "hears the song for the first time" performance is kind of similar since, like Frank, Dirk is also a session drummer and he employed a similar technique when learning the song assigned to him (mr. Fill at 4:49 was killer. Love Frank's style and love this series. This could have been a final take on the record and it would have still been basically perfect and such a great fit for the song.
As a professional drummer I can say that this is as good as it gets. This is what you get for laying down the hours and practising hard, devoting yourself to the craft and the business. Not only does he perform with attitude, confidence and presence, but he's also able to write perfectly understandable notes with efficiency, so that he can focus entirely on the painting of the canvas and orchestrating the coordination. This is a hard working musician. Technical? Indeed, those preparations were needed for this, but the energy and presence comes through experience of working in the field and playing all sort of contexts, developing listening skills. He's not playing for the cameras, he is focused on the task and locking in with the music. It's evident that he has played a large variety of styles, as he is also perfectly adaptable and can make several musical variations in such narrow turns. This was a perfectly executed first take and could have been the actual take in the studio session for the track, well done Sir! Now, I got to hear your ballads.
What impressed me most was how well he felt the silences. Most drummers in this series do a lot of drumming where the original track is sparse. I don't blame them at all; I mean, they are being asked to come and make an entertaining drum track, so it's natural to want to do _something,_ but Frank has the balls to think, "I'm going to let it breathe, less is more in this section." Where he does add more than is in the original, like the tom fills, it feels really intentional, and it works well. Fantastic take on the song.
Yeah he is so humble too, he totally is lightyears ahead of the original drums, those perfect pauses, the toms etc he did an Godly cover given the time and result. I honestly don't know what the heck is going on with Rob Zombie drums but they sound like something that a 5 year old comes up with, the OG is all click clock click clack nonsense there is no groove or structure at all ... come to think of it this is why I rather enjoy the RZ tracks as remixes only since they offer more and even if it's "electronic music" remix I don't ask too much from the drums anyway, when they are live drums and a heavy track then every instrument needs to be heavy but the OG drums are meh ...
what i really appreciate is that he’s solely focused on delivering a serviceable drum part. nothing too flashy, not trying to show off. i’m a tuba player, and the great Gene Pokorny once told me “when you’re a world class chef, you know better than to use every spice on your shelf in your dish.”
I can't praise this series enough. To hear these artists take on songs out of their comfort zone is super inspiring. And for this one in particular, Frank was able to hear it once and nail a track that fit super well. Amazing talent!
I love this version as well. But I think this shows how good John Tempesta actually is. Because Tempesta's version is very recognizable as part of the sound that defines Rob Zombie. Belucci is a beast nonetheles.
I was fortunate to have a private lesson with Frank in NY back around 2009. He warmly welcomed me into his home and proceeded to give me 2 plus hours of instruction on hand and foot techniques, how to prepare for any gig, and generally how to be a professional musician. I was in college at the time and tried to absorb everything he said like a sponge. The man is an absolute class act, and a professional in the truest sense of the word. Thanks so much Frank! Swing on brother!
I've got a serious question for you, man- Is the negative flipped on this video, or was he briefly holding his sticks backwards in traditional grip, in the beginning? Did you ever see him play with traditional grip? Sorry for the odd question, but I come mostly from a marching percussion background, and since I was 14 or so, traditional grip was the only way I could play properly... so seeing him seemingly grip the sticks backwards really stuck out. EDIT: Just noticed that he was doing it on the thumbnail image. His left hand grip (actually done in his right hand... I can now see, based on his shirt, that the negative wasn't flipped) wasn't a technically good grip... it was like the funky way you see some jazz drummers do it. Neither here nor there, but... just wondering. They guy's obviously a great player, with matched grip.
@@Gruuvin1 That's not how traditional grip works. There's a grip for the left hand, and a grip for the right. This dates back to military use of the snare drum, while marching; because everything in the military is (ideally) standardized, the drums were always slung to the left, necessitating a different grip for the left hand. So yeah- I think it's obvious that being lefthanded has nothing to do with traditional grip.
@@TheShurikenZone lol. Seriously? I play both traditional and match... Because I played snare drum line for years. I don't need a lesson there. My point is that he's a left handed drummer, and so if you saw him holding a traditional grip backwards, then that's probably why. Makes perfect sense to me. You don't HAVE to have been on a strict drum line to learn traditional grip the 'correct' way.... Maybe he just chose to learn it backwards because he wanted to angle his snare that way on his lefty set.
WoW!!! Frank Belucci who has this enormous reputation of being calculated and technical drummer; a perfectionist of drum sound gets thrown into the wolves den of hard thrashing rock and i believe (stealing Chad Smith's quote:) he fucking nailed it!! I love his take when he pushed the toms on the back end of the guitar riff. If you are not familiar with Frank Belucci, give him a good listen. The tension of his strikes create some of the highest quality drum sounds creating soft and rich beats. I am a big big fan. Thank you @Drumeo for creating and sharing this - i so needed this while having my coffee this morning. Please keep up the great work
Easy to see why he has been able to make a living playing drums. This guy is a total pro all around. Great feel, energy, interpretation and personal energy. Wow.
I 100% thought this was going to be an absolute bust because of his lack of enthusiasm and confidence in what was going on and then this man killed it. Arguably better than the original. Amazing. I love watching these masters.
His fills were just sublime. Loved the toms. I love how he intuitively left space in the mix for all the heavy stuff and didn’t feel the need to be in your face.
Honestly, that was a fantastic drum track. 10/10 and completely great. Never heard of Frank before today, but damn if he doesn't have some absolutely killer instincts. The genre of "Drumeo brings non-rock drummer to create new drum track for rock and metal song" may not be a big genre, but by golly it is a great genre.
mi tambien. as i commented above, not exactly a fanboy, bonham or bernard and i dont really care who else wants to hit the skins. but dayum this guy deserves so many plaudits
Man I love these 'hears for the first time' series! I love watching them break the song down on paper then just pour their own artistry into it. This was EXCELLENT AND AMAZING!
Holy ffffffff… he just murdered that song. That was absolutely incredible. I love the rolls off the toms. And doing it left-handed had my head spinning.
I am so impressed by Mr. Bellucci's version. When I first listened to the original song I thought "the drum is so iconic, this song can't work any other way". And now I love this version.
One thing I love about this series is it shows how much the drums change the song fundamentally. Frank's version is more musical, more atmospheric, where John's original track was more bombastic and driving. Love it.
@Gio_Panda Why exactly would you two morons assume I'm not a drummer based on that comment? Are you both trying to argue that Dragula is somehow a complex song?
I took lessons from Frank decades ago (back when he had a long brown mullet😁). He was the most technically advanced drummer I had ever seen - levels above anything I had witnessed. It’s so cool to see him here😎🤘
Yes! I’ve known him many years and always thought he was the biggest, silliest goofball. He is that, but also a consummate pro. First time I heard his big band playing, I was floored. He’s just an extraordinary player. So happy he’s on here. Dude can sing, too!
I dont have a license to put songs on spotify but I'm honestly considering splicing and editing the audio and uploading it to SoundCloud because this was just simply fucking awesome to listen to. I dont have anything on there yet as I am still figuring out how to get the mixing/mastering on my music right but I think I could make this happen. I'll put the link here if I am able to get it done.
I’ve been playing 20 years. These guys are nuts to do this. The kid who played Deep Purple is my favorite so far. But this guy (and of course Portnoy) are close seconds. And this dude is left-handed, and has his hi-hat and ride reversed. 👍
It's just so interesting seeing real technical drummers take on songs and give them such a different feel, Bellucci killed it, so clean and honestly so much more technical than the original, which is still a masterpiece in it's simple, repetitive glory
His right foot is just cruising on the hi-hat the whole time!!!! Frank’s timing is impeccable!!! He made the song so much more interesting and dynamic. He gave it groove and flow! That was so much fun to watch!!! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
The final little outro fill he plays at the end is fire, the fact he timed that fucking perfectly on only his second time hearing the song, fucking awesome. Love this guy
Not gonna lie, right after the first chorus, the drumming during the keyboards gave me chills. I've heard this song a million times and this gave me a "first time listen" feel.
Holy shit I've watched all of these but I've never been more impressed. Huge Zombie fan and he absolutely killed it. Honestly, it could have been better than the original.
His accurate interpretation, charting, and execution of the breaks and accents is incredible. I could picture the rest of the band on stage the first time with their last minute, substitute drummer, and nothing but “hell yes!” when they realize he knows the song so well. What a pro… respect sir!
I like the original better. I though some of the symbols were lacking in his version but it was very good and his use of the toms felt some more heart in the song at times rather than the vocals taking over for much of the song.
Frank hit it out of the park. Not the exact song, but actually added to it. I loved how he incorporated the floors in the second verse. Amazing job Mr Bellucci
this series is so awesome. I would never have come across a dude like this otherwise... and we get to see his personality, creative process etc its amazing
The best ones are when the drummer is out of their comfort zone. Chad Smith doing funk is a no brainer. But a situation like this tests the drummer's mettle (and merits).
Less than 30 seconds in and I love this guy. I can tell he genuinely loves the little jazzy part he played at the start but he also appreciates the heaviness of Rob Zombie and gets into it! Awesome!
Wow he literally composed the whole song professionally and performed his version flawlessly in record time. SO so clean...one word...technique....I honestly prefer Frankie's version.
@@gavin5995 I wouldn't go that far. He is extremely skilled to be able to quickly put something together like this but I'm sure even he would admit what he put together here is not as good as commercial quality of the studio processed original. Give him a few days and i bet he could make something to match it but this aint it even though it is insanely impressive.

@@metallurgico yes the whole thread is claiming this guys blind one take is a major improvement. lol. God help the unwashed masses.
Maaaan, those lead-sheet abilities are LEGENDARY. Blows my minds how much he got from listening to the song like 1 time only. Total pro. Respesct
Studio musicians are a whole different animal.
The little fills he adds in between the chorus and the next verse is just sublime.
what i really appreciate is that he’s solely focused on delivering a serviceable drum part. nothing too flashy, not trying to show off.
i’m a tuba player, and the great Gene Pokorny once told me “when you’re a world class chef, you know better than to use every spice on your shelf in your dish.”
I can't praise this series enough. To hear these artists take on songs out of their comfort zone is super inspiring. And for this one in particular, Frank was able to hear it once and nail a track that fit super well. Amazing talent!
I LOVE his version. That’s amazing. I would love to see Rob Zombie’s reaction to this.
Shhhhhhh ! The drummer will get pissed off if he likes it.
@@cathmar7394
Same!
I love this version as well. But I think this shows how good John Tempesta actually is. Because Tempesta's version is very recognizable as part of the sound that defines Rob Zombie. Belucci is a beast nonetheles.
His drums sound so much better
I was fortunate to have a private lesson with Frank in NY back around 2009. He warmly welcomed me into his home and proceeded to give me 2 plus hours of instruction on hand and foot techniques, how to prepare for any gig, and generally how to be a professional musician. I was in college at the time and tried to absorb everything he said like a sponge. The man is an absolute class act, and a professional in the truest sense of the word. Thanks so much Frank! Swing on brother!
Some teachers, especially if it’s a one-time lesson, can be okay with you setting up a recording device.
@@TheShurikenZonewell, I think it's obvious that he's a lefty.
If you didn’t get goosebumps on this one you aren’t human… this was PHENOMENAL!!!!!!
I'm more human than human
@@1kTroopKoopasbeat me to it
i actually liked his version more than the OG 10/10 he banged it
Amen!!!
Agreed, this is way better than the original track in one take!!!
toms were INSANE on this. this man killed it
I was so skeptical with this pre watching, I’m floored after, Frank KILLED THIS!
Fuckin SAME
I was floored by the perspective and then the energy and creativity to do such a straight forward song
It's crazy that he nailed all those vocal solo parts 👏
agreed.. i felt like he really enloyed playing it.
Those tom grooves were absolutely perfect for the song, he crushed it. I just love this series.
His fills were just sublime. Loved the toms. I love how he intuitively left space in the mix for all the heavy stuff and didn’t feel the need to be in your face.
Every time I need to feel humble I come to this channel and watch crazy talented people do things I couldn’t do if you gave me 100 years to practice.
I watched the whole time with my mouth agape. I'm still in awe. Great take on a great song.
I am so impressed by Mr. Bellucci's version. When I first listened to the original song I thought "the drum is so iconic, this song can't work any other way". And now I love this version.
Wooooooow 😅
One thing I love about this series is it shows how much the drums change the song fundamentally. Frank's version is more musical, more atmospheric, where John's original track was more bombastic and driving. Love it.
Frank's work on the toms in particular elevated the music. This whole deal of letting elite drummers create something is just excellent.
So proud to say that Frank was one of my teachers. 🎉🎉🎉
I’m impressed AF by all of the drummers who have done this. Keep up the great work y’all, this series is great.
I mean, these are the best drummers around so it's the least I expect
Ay Eff
This was incredible! I don't think they gave him enough credit. Dude got ALL the changes down after one listen.
Amazing.
Yeah they didn’t seem impressed at all.
I mean it's not like it's prog rock or jazz or something. It's not that complex lmao
@@cm9241 seems like you don’t play.
@@cm9241 Spoken like a true non-drummer
@Gio_Panda Why exactly would you two morons assume I'm not a drummer based on that comment? Are you both trying to argue that Dragula is somehow a complex song?
Absolutely best of all series. Masterpiece.
I took lessons from Frank decades ago (back when he had a long brown mullet😁). He was the most technically advanced drummer I had ever seen - levels above anything I had witnessed. It’s so cool to see him here😎🤘
That's so awesome
Yes! I’ve known him many years and always thought he was the biggest, silliest goofball. He is that, but also a consummate pro. First time I heard his big band playing, I was floored. He’s just an extraordinary player. So happy he’s on here.
Dude can sing, too!
This guy came in and absolutely killed the game. What a legend.
Drumeo has struck gold with this series, and I love every second of it. More, more, more ,and then some more. This is sooooo great!!!
God I love drummers who serve the song and don't try to overdo everything. That was soooooo unbelieably good, groovy, on point, you name it.
Frank seems like a really humble dude. He actually found a few patterns etc that I preferred to the original. He honestly killed it.
He vastly improved the drum part
lol for real can I get a Spotify track with franks drumming
@@stevengreene7389I feel that way about most of these videos lol😂😂😂
Facts
I dont have a license to put songs on spotify but I'm honestly considering splicing and editing the audio and uploading it to SoundCloud because this was just simply fucking awesome to listen to. I dont have anything on there yet as I am still figuring out how to get the mixing/mastering on my music right but I think I could make this happen. I'll put the link here if I am able to get it done.
He absolutely rocked it for being so out of his wheelhouse. He’s a true drummer. Can’t deny it.
I’ve been playing 20 years. These guys are nuts to do this. The kid who played Deep Purple is my favorite so far. But this guy (and of course Portnoy) are close seconds. And this dude is left-handed, and has his hi-hat and ride reversed. 👍
It's just so interesting seeing real technical drummers take on songs and give them such a different feel, Bellucci killed it, so clean and honestly so much more technical than the original, which is still a masterpiece in it's simple, repetitive glory
this guy is a beast of talent. his facial expressions just show that he's all in when playing. likely any genre. what a pro
The syncopation that matches the vocal line in the chorus is absolute perfection. Made a good song great.
Beyond the shear talent of these drummers. As a non-musician I think it is so cool seeing how unique and personalized each drummer’s set up is
His right foot is just cruising on the hi-hat the whole time!!!! Frank’s timing is impeccable!!! He made the song so much more interesting and dynamic. He gave it groove and flow! That was so much fun to watch!!! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
What the heck is a hi hat? Is that the same as an ass hat?
@@patrickwalker125no that’s you, he’s referring to part of the kit.
@@chasp_0784Does that mean your're like a jerk or something to that effect?
@@patrickwalker125 also you! What a world eh.
The final little outro fill he plays at the end is fire, the fact he timed that fucking perfectly on only his second time hearing the song, fucking awesome. Love this guy
As a Rob Zombie fan for 30 years now, wow! This blew my mind 🤘🤯🤘
How did i not see this until now?!?! This dude fucking rips and this is one of my favorites from this series now! What a legend
It’s crazy how you can hear a different genre just from the drums. He was giving us an 80s hair metal vibe.
Yes
almost like the rhythm is the whole backbone of it all
Impressively fast mastery of the song’s structure, no hesitation moving between sections, even fitting in a cymbal choke! Amazing stuff
Definitely one of the best and charting the structure! The pauses, fills, everything was spot on and musical.
You gotta get Frank back - this was amazing!!!
Agree! That was awesome
Me too. Why were the guys in the studio so subdued?
There were parts that I think may have been better than the original, but overall? Nah, the original is just too well done.
His accurate interpretation, charting, and execution of the breaks and accents is incredible.
I could picture the rest of the band on stage the first time with their last minute, substitute drummer, and nothing but “hell yes!” when they realize he knows the song so well.
What a pro… respect sir!
Frank's rendition gives this song a whole new life.
Man, this was so awesome to watch. What a kickass take on this classic. His face when he gets into it is exactly why it's great!
honestly, i think Frank improved it, that was cool
100%!! It sounds amazing with his drumming
Are you kidding?! He made this track better. Absolutely monster.
@@PeterSaintPeter that's what I'm saying. He made it even better
The skill this man has is freaking unbelievable. He absolutely crushed it.
this series is so awesome. I would never have come across a dude like this otherwise... and we get to see his personality, creative process etc its amazing
I love these "hears for first the time" videos. Frank nailed the song with his own drums. Very awesome drummer.
The best ones are when the drummer is out of their comfort zone. Chad Smith doing funk is a no brainer. But a situation like this tests the drummer's mettle (and merits).
rob was one of the first ‘big’ artists i met on my first major u.s. tour as a roadie. such a professional and nice guy. very warm and welcoming guy.

Comfort and function over style...
I love the tones on his toms. It gave the fills such a great, unique sound. Right on! Great job.
Less than 30 seconds in and I love this guy. I can tell he genuinely loves the little jazzy part he played at the start but he also appreciates the heaviness of Rob Zombie and gets into it! Awesome!
I am completely impressed with how he nailed the feel of the song. I'd buy this version for sure.
Wow he literally composed the whole song professionally and performed his version flawlessly in record time. SO so clean...one word...technique....I honestly prefer Frankie's version.
I came to the comments to literally say how I actually kinda like this version more
