with enough desire to get better you gonna play something more complex very soon! I love drums, can play some metallica hits learned from pure curiosity and desire. and I suck in life at all :D
Mike Mateo that ain’t how it works, each beat is measured by a 16th note that’s where it comes from, then you have 13 beats (13 16th notes) per measure
LOL. I do this all the time when playing tabla. Basically you have a 16 beat cycle, over which half time, or the base beat, is 8 beats per "bar". You then progressively up the tempo by playing a cycle of 10 beats, then 12, then 14, then eventually get to full time by playing 16 beats per bar. Then you go to double time - 20, 24, 28, 32. The whole idea is to not only add a little spice to the performance, but also to stimulate your own mind as a player during the course of accompaniment.

the best thing is to not compare yourself to everyone else. everyone has different styles of playing, and there are plenty of people who start at a younger age. age isn't the deciding factor, it's the years of experience you have behind it. don't focus on everyone else, but rather focus on bettering yourself. use the other musicians as motivation and influence, but never allow it to cut yourself down. keep up the good work man!
Isaac Soto Great comments, let me tell you a funny story, when I was the show drummer at the Nevele Hotel in the Catskill mountains one of the comics Lenny Rush ( very funny) use to say to the audience ... ladies and gentlemen, let’s hear it for Phil Nestor on drums! @@philipnestor5034 Agree completely. I started drumming (officially) when I was 14 and I'm now 58. About two months ago I got the Tommy Igoe DVD and the George Stone stick control book and broke my playing down all the way to whether I was even gripping the sticks properly. I've been practicing for at least two hours a day since then and found a local instructor with a good reputation. I'll be starting lessons as soon as our governor lets us start doing stuff again. And this was all after a couple of weeks in February when I'd decided to give up the drums for good because I just didn't enjoy it any longer. I'm hoping not to be an embarrassment by the time I'm 60.
Love how he's so on in 4-4 that the "Two" disappears because it's the sound that most resembles the sound of the snare. The "T" and the snare shot have to happen exactly at the same instant to get that effect. Cool.
I love exploiting that in practice! I do an exercise sometime where I play a roll for a certain number of bars without hearing the metronome before I'm allowed to finish (it maaaaaaaay have given me an anxiety disorder, but it was great for my drumming).

I'm totally non-musical. I can't play any instrument to save my life. That's not my gift, but I'm totally awestruck when I see musicians who can really play, and especially when see, and hear people like Tony Royster Jr. That's truly a gift from God!
If you we're to walk past somebody watching this video at 6:15 and you can't hear the audio, you would think they're watching it in fast forward. It's insane how fast his hands can move!
All improvised, not the slightest miscalculation or fumble of a stick, every swing is so precise his margin of error is probably the size of a quarter on the center of the drum head 😂
3.38 nice fill. Nice time keeping. I think sometimes as drummers we become so lost in technique that we can lose track of time sometimes. We are in good company if you listen to ELP Carl Palmer is not always in time and he is a very impressive drummer. The chops are nice but the time keeping is better. A lot of drummers have the chops but keeping in time whilst playing them is another skill entirely and not one I ever fully mastered but then again I come from the Clem Burke school of when playing live you expect imperfections. There are some great drummers who just seem to have natural time and that is a skill which can not be taught. I remember seeing the late Rob Heaton years ago and his time keeping was excellent. I have noticed drummers who play other instruments often understand time better than drummers like me who play just the one. I am not sure if anyone has noticed this?
AMAZING. I can't watch a video of his without being blown away. You can't practice and get that good. It's also got to be in your blood and man this kid has it.
Thanks to this video and this video alone, I haven't ever played to any metronome sound except for the human counting... Crazy how much impact a single player can have on your playing.

Exactly what I said when the machine counted out the first measure. I was like WTF is this quantum time signature?!?
1 2 3 4 5 6 + 1 2 3 4 5 6 + : so six and a half times two is 13. But why is it 13/16 where is the 16 from? Thanks

3:30 is the best bit
I know there's a 'Lars fans' joke there, but seriously, why all the down votes? The hell is wrong with you people?
They’re just jealous because they know Lars thinks 13/16 is an off brand convenience store
This kit sounds sooooo good! I never heard an eletronic kit sounding so amazing like this one!
+Danilo Costa These kits only sound amazing when you play godlike.
From time to time I still watch, '12 year old Tony Royster Jr.' and sit in utter awe. Unarguably one of the world's best drummers. - a drummer.
Steve Upisleeve he is the best. And I say that after the 12 yr old version of Tony. He is way sicker now
I'm totally non-musical. I can't play any instrument to save my life. That's not my gift, but I'm totally awestruck when I see musicians who can really play, and especially when see, and hear people like Tony Royster Jr. That's truly a gift from God!
Agreed!
"If I get lost, don't laugh" I'm not buying that. This guy never got lost.
Only Tony can make metro practice turn into a Grammy Award nominee!
I am not sure if anyone has noticed this?
misfit shut up
Not even a drummer (guitarist), but damn... I need to practice.
When I heart the “1 and 2” I knew this was gunna be different
The 393 dislikes; go re-evaluate your own lives! This is great playing and great work.
To end all arguments in this comment section, he is playing in 13/16. He even says it in the beginning of the video.
Can someone explain what happened at 408? I can't place the modulation...
Complete show off in my opinion . 0 musicality. Just showing chops. Sorry
And later on that night, Metronome went home, crawled under the blanket and bitterly cried itself to sleep.
The End.
this was like steroids for my feeble subconscious 15 year old dome.
AMAZING. I can't watch a video of his without being blown away. You can't practice and get that good. It's also got to be in your blood and man this kid has it.
5:43 just as my brain started getting it, i got instantly thrown off again
Thanks to this video and this video alone, I haven't ever played to any metronome sound except for the human counting... Crazy how much impact a single player can have on your playing.
Seriously, how can anybody dislike this? Awesome exercise and marvelously played!
"If i get lost , dont laugh" - meanwhile destroys whatever image i had of what drumming even is
Effortless! This man is on a different level!!!!
