Blast beats, gravity blasts, double bass, fill control, stick flares, cymbal work, speed, accuracy, power, duration, metal influences, jazz influences, hip-hop influences.... yeah...... this guy deserves his crown.
Tony Royster Jr has personified the term "best drummer" he has mastered everything from raw groove and powerful technique to theory and flow, this guy can literally build emotions and write stories from behind the kit, he has taken the lessons from years of praised drummers and molded them into a style that could suit just about anyone's ears and stop anybody in their tracks to watch, this guys has truly become the master as such a young age, there is no better model of persistence, talent, hard work, and dedication. Thank you Tony Royster for being such an inspiration to all drummers out there today.
I am not dissing anyone, but issuing a challenge: Try to appreciate talent instead of commenting negatively. If its your first reaction to want to say something negative, challenge yourself by watching the video and trying a compliment instead. If its not your style or something like that, try use the video to experience something new and broaden your horizons a bit :) This kid is amazing! Lets love not hate, fellow humans! :D
Love and opinion are not opposites, and opinions are also not automatically negative. I am referring to outright and unnecessary negativity, not sound and justified differences in taste. Having a different opinion than someone else does not mean you do not, or can not love them :)
How could anyone possibly have anything bad to say? Tony is amazing, he was better at 9 years old than a lot of drummers would ever be .. nothing but respect ! Big ups!
I had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman when he was 18. I drum as well (nowhere near his skill level) and happened to be in a recording studio in NYC and saw a practice pad and some sticks lying there. Of course I felt inclined to pick the sticks up and peck at the pad a bit. This dude must've had a radar because I had no idea he was in the building at all. Just appears like a wizard around the corner of the next room and watches me drum for a bit. Then after a moment nods his head in approval and sticks out his hand and motions that he'd like to try. I needed a new pair of pants after he played. P.S. Tony is a humble dude.
Mates that’s beautiful that his doubles unreal 🤪 The man is wizardry in true form I’ve been amazed tonight what a pleasure to here how clean his drumming is as well 🙏🙏🙏glad you got the pleasure to meet the man and safe drumming.
Tony is really amazing! One thing I would like to say is: you don't need to come from a music family to become a good musician and I strongly believe that each person in this world with a genuine enthusiasm for music and a lot of hard work can become a great musician.
Hombrepollo I totally agree with you!! That's the real challenge, if you can work steadily for 5, 10, 20 years that's when you will see big things coming out of your instrument.
My father brought me on tour soon has I was no longer in diapers. Started drumming at 4 years old. I’m 40. My career has a drummer started my senior year in high school. Now the past 12 years I’ve became a session drummer in the studio and touring the world for bands in need of a drummer on the road. Those of us blessed enough to get paid to do hat we love is quite amazing. Thank god for endorsements being in place. I have done clinics with Tony. He’s a good dude.
I love this guy. He is arguably one of the first kids we watched grow up through RUclips updates. And instead of being a 12yo who could do some stuff, he evolved into an amazing player. Regardless of natural talent, no one gets thay good without a solid work ethic. He deserves his place.
Edwin Goldcheidt get outta here hater. I said fast but can hold a killer groove. Just cause you can't play fast doesn't mean everyone else is bad cause they can so YOU go to sleep.
So much negativity calling this boring. If you played drums it wouldn't be so boring. Tony Royster Jr. is big in the drumming community and a lot of drummers in the 18-25 age group grew up with him. He's an inspiration. The stuff you just saw him play, a lot of us can't even dream of doing. Maybe not adrenaline pumping no, and boring to some sure, but not everyone find sports interesting either. There's a big world out there, and a GoPro can record and share all of it.
for all you dissing this guy but this guy is what gopro is all about being a Hero! some people will look up to him and try and better them self as a artist just because this video isn't action packed doesn't mean it shouldn't be here!
+PuffPuffPass No, the greatest drummer is in you... if you can make someone FEEL the rhythm, the music, the vibe. Don't be intimidated by technique and speed.
So Tony royster is a Libra person, wow never really thought about that what makes it even more unusual is he was born 1984 so his 35 years old one year older then me & he is Van Halen album which is from 1984,,, & as for me I was born 1986 & as the going gos it's all freaking me out yes what makes it even more unusual is I'm a drummer as well but by ear & I just think it's quite iconic that Tony Royster JR is one year Older ,I'm a bit over excited,,, thats Epic 👍🙏☯️🥁🥢, I'm really amazed 🤔🤔.
Crazy. Man, he really was just born into it. Or born to do this- I got into drumming much later, and still am able to make a career of it, but I don’t play like Tony does. He deserves all the success he’s had and that is still coming to him!!
Boo who. Shouldn't think like that. This video should make you want to go learn your rudiments and to practice your ass off. Everybody starts at bottom. Its the matter of if you really want to dedicate yourself to become a good, great or an amazing player. That's your choice.
I remember seeing him when I was younger and he was definitely a driving force for me to push forward my technique on the drums. It is so great to see him again. Brings back that early passion.
for anyone that jumps on here and tries to "critique" any of his playing, or put down the fact that he's "just fast" or whatever else....first: look yourself in the mirror. Second: take your hand and raise it to about face level. Third: clench said hand until it forms a fist. Fourth: push said fist at a rapid pace into your face multiple times. How on earth can anyone think they can say anything bad about this dude. Seriously, just shut up. Dont hate because you aint as good as him. It actually just makes those people look pathetic....
Totally. And if someone isn't fully realizing their potential, giving them shit doesn't help. Being supportive of people who are creatively inclined to begin with is only going to push them even further.
***** The fact that YOU can't comprehend it doesn't mean that others can't. I can completely understand what he is doing. Also, its a damn SOLO. He plays drums for Jay-Z (Which I think is a waste of his talent) so don't think he can't play "music". I love his solos. He doesn't play much in 4/4 time either, he has much more complex time-signatures. This guy is amazing at drums, and as a drummer of 16 years, I have not ONE bad thing to say about his skills.
***** greeeeeat....a high school kids that knows everything. Kid, I've been playin the drums longer than you've been alive. Any GOOD drummer can tell you that when you play MUSIC, your emotions come through what you play. Rudimentally, yeah, i understand what he's playing playing how he's playing it. Its easy to see through what he plays his different emotions. Plus, unless your an idiot, the videos compliments what hes playing too. So do yourself a favor and just shut up. You trying to make any "valid points" just makes you look even more like an idiot.
I can not believe the hate people are commenting, are you serious? This is Tony Royster. The has been drumming since he was 3 and you want to complain about him not letting the stick bounce when he plays. How irrelevant is that. Yes drummers know that's how it's typically done, but it's not necessary. He does it his way and it works. He gets the big bucks, the specials, the sponserships, and gigs and you're complaining about technique so trivial it's laughable. Man, yall are something else. I saw a comment that said real drumming isn't about speed. You're right, it's about time, both of which he had. Yall needa sleep. This guy is talented on levels that's unheard for the time he started playing. I was a minor child prodigy, started at 3 just like him, but my drumming was no where near as advanced. We all pace differently, no need to confine people into a bubble when they con do perfectly fine on their own. Smh
I find you all insulating these guys hilarious, because none, not one of you haters, is as good as any of these drummers you are bashing. If so, why have I not heard of you, are you endorsed??? Do you play with a band that anyone has ever heard of??? Do you have any RUclips videos with millions of views???? Or are you just jealous that Royster, Peart and Mangini are 3 of the greatest drummers alive right now. And they all have groove, chops and mad technical ability. You all, probably not so much.
Anyone with the sheer stupidity to thumbs down this video....I would love to see and or hear what you can do better. It flat out amazes me the incredible lack of knowledge and respect fellow human beings have for one another. Tony is simply one amazingly gifted artist...and some things in life need no explanation or validation. Thank you Tony for doing what you do brother.
How silly of people to think that the divine will concern itself with making someone a good drummer. How bout he was around his fathers band since a baby listening to music, it absorbed into his subconscious. Then started at the age of 5 when your brain has not gone through the process of proliferation it is easier to learn things especially if the brain is interested in the subject and can focus ( precisely the reason that a 8 year old can learn a second language faster than a 35 year old). Then his music loving parents taught him the basics at 5 years old which he absorbed easily. Then they decided when he was only 5 that music was in his soul and let him practice hours and hours daily. So tony earned it. The only gift was supporting parents and a healthy body. God has bigger matters to attend to with the cosmos then worrying about one human drums. No one oerson is quite that special.
I'm so Honored to play drums for your dad Tony Royster SR. in his band. Tony JR. You sound absolutely amazing. Your speed and dynamics are impeccable. Best of luck to you and your drumming career. Tim Stanford , drummer and vocalist.
Music is not a sport its all about expression of your inner self. Many metal drummers can do arrangements like these but not many drummers can express themselves like Gavin Harrison or Neal Peart. Just to name a couple.
adam gereluk you just don't speak the language that the metal drummers speak, they are expressing what's inside of them and it's full of emotion, but if you don't speak the language then you don't know what they're saying. It's not better or worse than other genres, just different, each one is a unique language itself. I hope that makes sense.
This guy plays some of the most absurt fills and grooves I have ever heard. But man I love the editing and visuals shown here. Amazing work on both ends.
***** Neil Peart was ahead of his time back in the 70s and I still think he's a great drummer even though hes much older. Younger drummers like Tony Royster Jr. are gonna be quicker for sure, then Mike Mangini would be the direct comparison in terms of speed. In terms of technical drumming, Gavin Harrison is probably my favourite
O to wlasnie chodzi. Trjr jest lepszy. To ze akurat w gym wideo jest szybszy nie ma z tym nic wspulnego. Tak samo buddy rich. Pert nie jest zly, ale nie ruwna sie trjr-wi.
didn't hear/see a lot of rudiments, but speed and groove in AMPLE supply. Wow. Nice to see him all grown up and still honing his craft and feeding that considerable talent. Bravo.
Technically he is amazing, there is no denying that. Strokes, singles and doubles, are flawless at any speed. He just seems to lack character. When Steve Jorden, Jeff Pocaro, Questlove, Jojo Mayer, Bernard Purdie etc. play, you can close your eyes and hear their style, nuances and focus on different details. I always missed that with Mr. Royster. Anyways, still a good video.
No one is commenting on the concept, direction or editing of this video which to my mind is freaking amazing. Maybe people should quit bitching about which drummer is better and appreciate a work of art.
Jesse Shepard If you are a really good drummer you can create a feel and stay on time. That seems more like an excuse to just have feeling and not have to work hard on the metronome.
+Dylan DeBord Lol people and not understanding subdivisions of rhythm... Pretty sure if you practiced even a 10th as much as this guy you would perhaps learn to grasp what he is doing. He isnt even playing time in this piece often, but when he is its tight as.
+Dylan DeBord guessing you're the kinda person that prefers to always play in 4/4 aren't you? and i bet you can't grasp metric modulation either. As a person who writes every part for the progressive metal band i'm in WITH jazz influences, i think i'd know what i'm talking about. But please, feel free to keep expanding your sphere of ignorance.
Aarron Symonds Its just like the drumming feels like it has no structure. Im not saying he cant keep time. Im just saying that in this solo the tempo just feels like it is changing too much.
an 8 minute and 33 second long go pro advertisement. Amazing drummer, i remember seeing this kid in the news and papers yeaaars ago. this dude is a legend. amazing stuff.
Not sure how can have anything bad to say about this guy! This video is meant to show what he can do, and honestly, this video is amazingly done. Great camera angles.....excellent sound as well! He's played with many artists and is capable of playing anything with anyone! Just appreciate the talent!
Jas Bataille Actually that technique is called freehand, gravity blast is a blastbeat in which the freehand technique is used. Royster doesn't use it here, though.
+Snail Man mmm, right. Never heard about Elvin Jones? He did music from drum, he did soul from drums! Royster is just loud and out of control mess. This is not an opinion, this is truth!
I think that one of the (many) reasons he's considered the best is for how long he's been killing it. He was killing it at the age of 12 and has only been getting better as time progresses.
Without a doubt. The best drummer to have ever walked the planet. Check his other work. It is drumming that is completely unorthodox. Check him out at 12 years old. Nuff said.
I remember watching some of this footage when I was 13, thinking that one day I would be this good on drums. And well, I'm 26 now, and I am not this good. lol, still love hearing this guy do his thing every now and then!
I can see where you're coming from, but to me it looks more like he's telling his story with his music. Idk that just strikes me more as being creative rather than pompous.
Am I the only one that's not enjoying the sound of this at all? Like, there's no structure, no beat, it just sounds like he's hitting random stuff as fast as possible. Maybe it's just my prefered style of music, but I'd rather listen to a Parkway Drive or Avenged Sevenfold drumtrack,
I completely agree. Just because something is hard to play doesn't make it attractive to listen to. Personally, I feel that the best music usually isn't played by the most technically advanced musicians. Because the best music doesn't require that amount of technical ability.
No, it's not a gift from god, it's a gift from your parents and your own hard work and practice. Don't attribute it to some imaginary bollocks when you deserve the credit yourself.
If wasn't for God, we wouldn't be breAthing much less playing anything. The fool has said in his heart, there is no God. Psalm 14:1. Don't be a fool!!!
If you didn't hear the music in that then what video did you just watch? He just sat there and told his whole story with what he played. It was moving and extremely inspirational. He put his soul into this project, I can tell. I think you just simply misunderstood. Close your eyes and listen to the playing as well as the story being told. Plus playing really fast looks cool on a GoPro...
ZebraBear88 This is pretty much the pinnacle of what some people call 'ADD Drum Solo'. -Play a groove for less than a minute -Play the same groove faster -Play some flashy fills full of double bass and fancy movements -Play a groove that has nothing to do with what you played before -Repeat (-If you have a big drum set, make sure that you hit every single piece of it during your solo) An example on how to not do that would be Benny Greb. His drums solos have structure and are not just 'look at me playing fancy shit!'
You guys are ridiculous... Just because your simple mind cant comprehend his technicality and complex time signatures does not mean he can't play music. This is a SOLO. If you don't like his style then fine, but don't try to critique him until you can play better.
Bruno de Souza Lino Tony Royster drums circles around Benny Greb. Benny's solos are boring and he rarely uses any time signature besides 4/4 which is basic and not nearly as impressive.
***** Keeping time has absolutely nothing to do with 'keeping a consistent groove' going. Any competent drummer can keep time without thinking. Also, he's not backing anything or doing rhythm for music. This is a free time drum solo. He makes his own time. So the concept of keeping time doesn't apply here.
+Daniel Johnson Worthless comment. I have watched many many drummers over the years and he is up there to be one of the greatest drummers ever. Look up his Asap performance
Brass Man drum solos are free form expressions and demonstrations of technical prowess, like any other form of art. The soloist isn't constrained to 'conventional' rhythms, nor having to lead anybody, in the same way a painter isn't necessarily aiming to photo-realistically replicate a scene.
Blast beats, gravity blasts, double bass, fill control, stick flares, cymbal work, speed, accuracy, power, duration, metal influences, jazz influences, hip-hop influences.... yeah...... this guy deserves his crown.
It's not about speed. It's about feeling and a naturally blessed gift. This man has it. Envious to say the least. A pleasure to listen to.
+Randothol H yeah he is fast, but i wasn't really engaged by any of his beats, or really impressed by the musicality of his drumming
Theres no groove, man
+Thomas Cooper There were many grooves...
+Thomas Cooper youre kidding right?
+Thomas Cooper Man you know nothing about drumming
Video of the Day!
Play along as Tony Royster, Jr. takes us on a musical journey. Drumroll, please.
Awesome
You got ten seconds to perform?
Come on, give us some melody...

I wouldn't say just to all drummers, but to anyone who aspires toward greatness in whatever skill set identified.
To all drummers everywhere: keep on drumming, moving, grooving, sweating, breathe, relax, expand, contract, breathe, exhale, feel, be real, trust yourself, practice, breathe, keep on drumming....never stop drumming, move ahead, feel, be real, smile.
This want work. You got to breath a little more.

"Try and play an instrument or something. You might be good at it. You never know."
Awesome words to come from someone so young at the time.
this is awesome

Thank you, Tony, for inspiring me to continue to love drumming, even when I don't have a kit of my own.
This guy plays some of the most absurt fills and grooves I have ever heard. But man I love the editing and visuals shown here. Amazing work on both ends.
An example to follow. Not so much for his excellent skill but for his dedication and oerseverance.
Idol.
This kid could definitely become legendary among other greats such as Mike Mangini and Neil Peart
"this kid" lmfao hes way better than neil pert. show me one video where neil pert is anywhere near as good as this. such an overrated drummer xD
***** "O Baterista", Rush In Rio.

O to wlasnie chodzi. Trjr jest lepszy. To ze akurat w gym wideo jest szybszy nie ma z tym nic wspulnego. Tak samo buddy rich. Pert nie jest zly, ale nie ruwna sie trjr-wi.
Man no matter how hard most of us try we cant reach that hand speed and have that same feel it's truly a gift.
Harmonious combination of natural talent, and hard work.
getting hella samples from this
How talented
This guy is one of the all time greats. A living legend and all rounded drummer. Incredible speed as well.... rock on Tony..........I'm a big fan.
Omg those toms
Truly Blessed playing since he was 3 an the rest is history. Been keeping up with this guy for a long time he's truly a beast.
Those hats.... tasty!
I think they are aax freq hats
Awesome! Tony Royster Jr. Is my favorite drummer and it was great to see this, thanks GoPro.
I just wanna hear him full on blast beating!!
1 Of the Most SICKEST Camera's Strapt to THE Most Sickest Drummers!Tony Royster Jr.!! #1 FFL Peace!!!!
Even his slow-motion drumming is faster than my realtime -___-
didn't hear/see a lot of rudiments, but speed and groove in AMPLE supply.
I agree with you.
No one is commenting on the concept, direction or editing of this video which to my mind is freaking amazing. Maybe people should quit bitching about which drummer is better and appreciate a work of art.
Is he rushing or dragging ?
Nice!!! Haha!!
I remember the first time I saw his 12 year old solo... like maybe 10 years ago... I was so amazed, and knew it was just the beginning... legend.
One of the 27% of black children who was raised with a father.
Shankabottomus omg😂
Racist much
Truly, one of the finest drummers there can be, in the world today.
his tempo is everywhere.
true music you 'feel' doesn't have to have a set tempo.
You guys should look up Jonah Rocks on youtube he is the best kid drummer I have ever heard!
Not sure how can have anything bad to say about this guy! This video is meant to show what he can do, and honestly, this video is amazingly done. Great camera angles.....excellent sound as well! He's played with many artists and is capable of playing anything with anyone! Just appreciate the talent!
Shit, hes faster with one hand than i am with both D_:
Jas Bataille Actually that technique is called freehand, gravity blast is a blastbeat in which the freehand technique is used. Royster doesn't use it here, though.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond man how u get so smart these days lol
definitely the fastest hands in the business! just an all over great drummer! #respect
Nice job Tony, just.. where the music? -.-
+Anna Lopresti apparently you weren't paying attention :P
+Snail Man mmm, right. Never heard about Elvin Jones? He did music from drum, he did soul from drums! Royster is just loud and out of control mess. This is not an opinion, this is truth!
But it's still music. Rhythm is a part of music, true story.
And it's his style. He doesn't play like Elvin Jones cuz he's not Elvin Jones.
u didnt understand anything! ahahaha
I think that one of the (many) reasons he's considered the best is for how long he's been killing it. He was killing it at the age of 12 and has only been getting better as time progresses.
not my tempo
Without a doubt. The best drummer to have ever walked the planet. Check his other work. It is drumming that is completely unorthodox. Check him out at 12 years old. Nuff said.
I love Royster Jr. But I love Travis Orbin much more.
I remember watching some of this footage when I was 13, thinking that one day I would be this good on drums. And well, I'm 26 now, and I am not this good. lol, still love hearing this guy do his thing every now and then!
This video would have been a bit funnier if the drumming was recorded with gopros mics :D
Fantástico vídeo de Tony Royster Jr produzido com e pela GoPro. Que lindo trabalho!
No denying that he is one of the best today. But his ego ruins it for me.
What ego?
He has no ego man. Meet him in person and you'll see how humble he is.
after all, he just simply stated the truth wasn't he?
What you see here is confidence, no ego. He's probably one of the most humble badasses I've ever seen.
I can see where you're coming from, but to me it looks more like he's telling his story with his music. Idk that just strikes me more as being creative rather than pompous.
One of the best edits I have ever seen.
i pee in pools
Excellent!
Am I the only one that's not enjoying the sound of this at all? Like, there's no structure, no beat, it just sounds like he's hitting random stuff as fast as possible. Maybe it's just my prefered style of music, but I'd rather listen to a Parkway Drive or Avenged Sevenfold drumtrack,
lol
No what he is playing is incredible. Its very technical and advanced lol
What a bloody idiot xD no idea about drumming haha there is actually a beat behind it!
yep.. just you bud
I completely agree. Just because something is hard to play doesn't make it attractive to listen to.
Personally, I feel that the best music usually isn't played by the most technically advanced musicians. Because the best music doesn't require that amount of technical ability.
My favorite part of a Rock Concert is the DRUM SOLO!. You good!
No, it's not a gift from god, it's a gift from your parents and your own hard work and practice.
Don't attribute it to some imaginary bollocks when you deserve the credit yourself.
@kumquatmagoo Thank you for having common sense
If wasn't for God, we wouldn't be breAthing much less playing anything. The fool has said in his heart, there is no God. Psalm 14:1. Don't be a fool!!!
Let people believe things if they want as long as they're not hurting anyone or anything.... Except drum heads, of course
best modern drummer on the planet. check the complexity, mind blowing!
really do not enjoy his style
How could ANYBODY give this a thumbs down? This is phenomenal...period.
Yea he's fast, but I don't really wanna listen to that shit
lol jealous? go watch some drum clinic of him when he plays slowly then you troll
I keep coming back to reach for the bar that Tony Royster Jr. Has raised up!
Great drummer but sometimes less is more.
+Ruben Hätscher Less is more in music, not a drum solo. His dynamics between busyness and reservation are pretty balanced.
The drums and cymbal sounds are just fantastic.
Always the same with big kits, the can't play a groove for 1 minute. He's really good, but it si no music. It is a technically way, not musically.
ZebraBear88
This is pretty much the pinnacle of what some people call 'ADD Drum Solo'.
-Play a groove for less than a minute
-Play the same groove faster
-Play some flashy fills full of double bass and fancy movements
-Play a groove that has nothing to do with what you played before
-Repeat
(-If you have a big drum set, make sure that you hit every single piece of it during your solo)
An example on how to not do that would be Benny Greb.
*****
Keeping time has absolutely nothing to do with 'keeping a consistent groove' going. Any competent drummer can keep time without thinking. Also, he's not backing anything or doing rhythm for music. This is a free time drum solo. He makes his own time. So the concept of keeping time doesn't apply here.
I'm not saying he's bad, but i cant comprehend much rhythm in his drumming.
+Daniel Johnson Worthless comment. I have watched many many drummers over the years and he is up there to be one of the greatest drummers ever. Look up his Asap performance
Morris Kramer I don't remember asking you. I never said he was bad. Stfu and mind your buisness
Brass Man drum solos are free form expressions and demonstrations of technical prowess, like any other form of art. The soloist isn't constrained to 'conventional' rhythms, nor having to lead anybody, in the same way a painter isn't necessarily aiming to photo-realistically replicate a scene.
