The real question here is are you excited for those new Canon RF lenses? If Canon releases a “pro” body, I think I’m going to buy into the system and use it alongside my Sonys 🤙 Dat 85 1.2 tho 😍😍
Manny Ortiz also the small 70/200. why in many many years of ml, sony has produced a big G master 70/200? I don’t think they are in the right way (thinking the next 2 years and the run ti produce smaller lens also smaller tele)
You seem to be really excited! What is the reason, that you would use the Canon MILC system alongside your Sony? The 85 1.2 RF? The autofocus reliability? The easy-to-work RAW files? The touch ergonomics, and the articulating screen? You seem to pleasantly surprised after the video, especially when we talk about the AF system.
For focusing try top right corner or just right corner :) works much better :D if your nose is not too big :) the best focusing option is absolute when u use whole mirror :) it's instant. Yes I miss IBIS as well, as RF 28-70 f2 is really one of a kind (but heavy as hell) as is RF 50 1.2 but they both lack ibis and I need my shutter speed at least 200 to keep photos clean :) when you are in the right conditions that you can shoot iso 100 and 400+ shutter speed those two lenses don't have competition on the market!
Yeah, I'd love to be able to get back into Canon's system but in addition to overpriced, under-featured camera bodies, Canon sensors are still trailing the competition in terms of dynamic range, which is really important to me. I fear I'll be waiting a very long time for a contender from Canon.
Kindest review from a Sony shooter by far. No BS or anything. Canon will be releasing their RF "Holy Trinity" this year. Would you try their 70-200 2.8? Kamusta! From Manila :)

The joystick envy is strong with this one. I traded my 5DMKIV for the eos R and absolutely prefer using the touchscreen to move the AF point, way faster workflow. I'm sure canon will give the pro version a nipple (joystick) to keep everyone happy and pacified.
I hope they still give a touch and drag with the future cameras that have a joystick, 'cause touch and drag is great and i would use it 90% of the time when shooting thru viewfinder.

I have large hands, so using my thumb on the back screen feels very natural. As for IAF, firmware 1.4 came out since Manny made this video, and it *totally* fixed that problem. IAF is spot on now. It works great.

Do yourself a favor Manny, get the RRS base plate for their L Bracket, or the Small Rig L bracket (L Is removable) for the Sony. Both give you a grip extension that goes across the entire bottom. Plus no more needing a tripod mount with arca grooves on either.
My friendly recommendation is first to get back to basics in photography. You should do that before anything else (including making reviews and educational videos). Get an analog camera, or very basic digital one and learn the *basics* of photography, bro. No IBIS, no bs, no 20 fps., no 200 pages of clunky menu options... just pure, clean photography (and light) that will slow you down, will make you think and ask yourself questions... and will give you the opportunity to learn (and understand) the basics. Only one of the things as an outcome of this exercise that you'll discover is that you shouldn't be shooting a moving subject at 1/60 with 85mm lens (if you want it tack sharp) and IBIS has nothing to do with it - it just don't play in cases like this when you're having your model moving in the frame. You may also be surprised that holding the heavy nose camera (such as the EOS-R + 85/1.2) with both hands will also help. Then you will *really* understand how DoF works and it's tricky relation of subject to camera distance, aperture, focal length etc. And last, but not least after learning the basics of photography you will surprisingly discover that the real photography is not all about random shots of a model with nice "defocus character" or "bokeh" shot at widest aperture possible. Not for every shot at least. Now, I'd like to take the opportunity to clarify why Canon's Eye AF "disappears" when the subject distance increase significantly and magically reappears back when she move closer to the camera: First and foremost pay attention that Canon's Eye AF behaves differently depending on the focal length. And this is like so not by accident. It is intentionally done this way. With 85mm at f/1.4 for example you will have enough DoF if the model is 5-8 feet away from the lens and just a decent "face detection" is more than enough to give you a perfect shot regardless of where *exactly* the camera focused (being it on the iris, or on the nose). Where you really need Eye AF is for distances shorter than 5 feet with this lens. Got it now why the EOS-R behaves like so with its Eye-AF? You will thank me later, no worries. :) Keep shooting, dude! P.S. The RF50/1.2 is so damn good, that it even can easily be put against Leica's new Noctilux 75/1.2 ($13k lens). Taking into account the price tag of the RF50 and it is just a shame not to buy this gem and get ANY body that you can mount this beauty on without even looking what exactly is the model ID on that body.
I love this channel. RUclips recommended it a couple of weeks back. Great content. Simple, direct explanations. Great behind-the-scenes look at what leads right up to getting a great shot. Great chemistry; this channel is the sum of both you and your wife. Thank you both and know we value your work.
Great pics.Thing is talented photographer can use any new or 5 years old camera no matter brand. We are too spoiled now.Cameras were already great since 5D3 or D810 or even older.
I think there is certain point where your focal plane is broad enough that you don't need to keep focusing on the eye and af system can switch to the face detection. It is more of a inside your head thing when the af method changes from eye to face. It still really nails it every time even it is "not eye autofocusing".
Okey, a quick word for all the tech geeks here, after doing countless portraitshoots with the R and the 85 1.2 (exactly the same combo): the face recognition is ALWAYS searching for the eye. I think Canon is too afraid to put the box on the eye when far away, because maybe it's not a 100% tested algorythm. Out of my 60.000 portrait photos (shot with 1.2 and 1.4 lenses), maybe 10-20 are out of focus. That's how good the DPAF face recognition is, in single shot mode. In continous? I don't know, but in single shot IT IS VERY RELIABLE.
Not just the R has face recognition Dual Pixel af. Maybe he meant this? Correction he used the R... But it’s out way longer than two months and you can shoot a lot in a short time when you are doing is professional
9:00. Switch the touch drag AF to be: 1) top right quadrant 2) relative instead of absolute. That way you don’t have to move your thumb so far right that you lift your shutter finger. Note to canon: make a 1/8 top right option and then you can keep it on absolute and access the whole af area with a small part of the screen... Also, luv the touch bar. Took me a while but I’m now a pro. Its like learning to drive stick.
Loved it Manny! All very valid points. One thing I wanted to touch on (lol) with the touch and drag AF is that since you had it set to relative, rather than absolute you don't need to keep dragging your thumb all the way to the centre, rather do a few small movements of the thumb, the same way you would while using a joystick. It takes a bit of getting used to be its alright! The main flaw for me however is that you don't get AF point control at your thumb anymore if the screen is flipped out or closed.
I’ve actually gotten some good use from the multifunction bar. I set mine to punch in on my focus point with the right arrow, display my histogram with the left, and my kelvin white balance with the swipe. A lot of people don’t like it but I kinda like having those features available at my finger tips.
I think it makes sense, what Canon is doing. They first create a professional lens lineup, with consumer bodies, and it gives them time to really perfect the reliability of their professional cameras, when they come out. They already know how to make amazing lenses. And with these lenses, they show the world, that they care about mirrorless. "Alright, alright guys, we have it coming, here are some amazing lenses to chew on in the meantime". They are not in a hurry, that's for sure. Mostly videographers are the worried ones, but they have already switched to Sony, or bought a C200.
Canon don't have the native lenses like Sony. And I hate adapting lenses. I also hate the fact that they cripple their cameras to force you into their more expensive line. No thanks, I'll stick with Sony. At least they're being aggressive, and pushing innovation.
Good video but one point. You know for a professional photographer to be depending on gear to stop blurry shots is something like a motorcyclist expecting a computer to keep them upright. Are we so tech dependent and skill lacking we cannot take shots without IS? What were people doing b4? Up your skills. It is like a singer saying they need auto tune to keep in key and then complaining they do not have it. I do not know maybe I am too old.
Perfectly said , especially when Ortiz uses eye auto focus, why would he care about a joystick, while discounting touch to drag, since he programs at the bottom of the screen while complaining he can’t reach it 😝
You don't depend on the gear to stop blurry shots, at least a professional wouldn't BUT letting the gear help you be more creative or to get a shot that isn't usually possible is why people want IBIS.
Nice humble review, like the fact that you didn't slate it and found good things from it and the fact you can work around limitations, I own it and love it, since day 1 of owning it iv never activated the Touch Bar but never owned a camera with a joy stick, the touch to drag works well if you have big hands, anyway loved the video :)
J Y but as Manny admits after the shoot, many of his shots from inside the parking lot were no good due to camera shake. The shutter speed had gone too low for one-handed shooting.
As a Canon user, I appreciate your review of this camera because you actually used it plus you're not just telling everyone not to buy because it's not a Sony camera (And yes, I know you said you wouldn't buy it lol) Keep up the great work with your channel.
Again Manny, great vid. Just side note, I don't know why you'd ever need other models. Diana does an exceptional job. No matter the weather it would seem lol
It's not as bad as everyone makes out, the kit lens is pretty soft but the 50mm f1.2 is banging. I quite enjoyed doing a portrait shoot with it at the Christmas markets last year but definitely happy I switched to Sony rather than wait for the EOS R...
Great, honest review, Manny. As a long-time Canon user, I think you've hit upon what we always face -- great, great lenses with bodies that always seem a bit behind the competition. Granted, I love my 5D Mark IV, but when I shoot with friends' D850s and Sony bodies, I appreciated features I'm missing -- especially with respect to the sensor technology. I look forward to following your channel.
Great video! And you're so right about the Canon menu system. That (and the L-series lenses) is honestly the main reason is still use Canon. And the ergonomics is so good. Not that many people have tiny hands, Sony!
From a Canon user thank you. Sometimes the spec sheets are just that. It is nice to see a competitor photographer give a clear unbiased opinion instead of just calling it trash. As someone who shoots canon and has over 10K in L glass I just cannot switch systems because of a few more features as a lot of us cannot. I have the R and love it but I also have the 5D4 and 7D2. Great video. New sub here and I just might have to take a dive into the Sony waters with the A7III as there are some Sony shooters out there that are not just bashers and gave it a shot.
Ohh man...!!! Those RF lenses that Canon just announced today are so tempting, look at the length of 70-200 2.8. Like you said if they releasing their new pro body with new IBS sensor, improving Eyes AF and dynamic range, that’d be a solid system from Canon right there.
Awesome personal review bro! And you have a very good personal photography model which is always a plus! Thumbs up for her and a big thumbs up to you bro.🍻
For the Z6 review - the front Fn buttons are great to use in conjunction with the back dial to change whitebalance or AF modes and other things - customize! :D and the rec button can also be reprogrammed when shooting photos
This is an honest review. I've worked with the A7III and the EOS R and I agree with everything. One thing you didn't touch base on was the color science. I ended up selling my A7III because, for me, skin tones were not what I was used to. Do you use Capture One to convert your raw files?
Wow didn't realize the EOS R has that shade to protect the sensor when it's open. That's actually incredible that Canon put that in. Thank you WalmartPapi
Thanks for this great critique on the EOS R. As a A7R3 user, have you ever shot with it in event photography? I own a 5DM3 and I’m still wanting to buy a 2nd camera (A7R3) for event photography and weddings, namely for detail shots and dance floor captures. How say you?
Just a thought Manny, you don't like the fact that the EOS R doesn't have IBS ..... but you shoot one handed, surely supporting the camera with both hands would improve camera shake? It is a great camera with some great features.
I primarily use the R for portrait photography and by far my favorite feature is using tilt shift lenses for these portraits and using their new manual focus guide is really fantastic almost like using a rangefinder. It breathes new life into manual focusing in general. Things they should improve on for my own needs: dual card slots, joystick, EYE AF, and tracking in continuous focus.
I agree with everything you said Manny except the joystick function. The touch screen AF is just faster than using a joystick and you put your touch af selection on the bottom so yea its gonna be hard to reach the shutter button with one hand. Think Canon is shifting towards touch screen AF. I think Canon should change the touch bar to a touch pad that can be used to select AF points, if not replace the D-Pad below with a pad and put custom button functions above where the touch bar is
I agree that the A7III is a bit small in the hand, but I put a bottom plate on it and now it's basically perfect. As a bonus the plate attaches to my tripods without me now needing an extra plate that needs to be screwed on each time.
Thanks for the review. Im with you...I believe if they drop a "Pro" version of this...it would KILL!!! Guess I'll stick with my 5D Mark IV & wait it out!!
Here’s my takeaway from Canons first full frame mirrorless. It’s a great first gen non pro mirror less camera and gets me pumped for the pro version. Many Canon shooters didn’t jump ship to Sony and I’ve been more than happy with the 1Dx mark II and 5D Mark IV and patient waiting. Hell, I thank Canon for allowing me to get so much mileage out of my setup. I’m an excited for the future and I’m glad I waited. Oh shit, and the new 70-200 is tiny!!!
I am happy to hear how honest you are about your experience with the EOS R. If I had to choose between the EOS R and the Nikon Z...I have been saying that I would go with the EOS R. Even though I have been a Nikon shooter for 6 years, but have been shooting with Sony for a couple years as well. ;)
Thank you for the video and your thoughts. Canon is working on stabilization in body. If they pull that off with dual card slots and a joy stick in a pro body, they may just knock it out of the park. I hold my breath on video because Canon wants to protect their video and other offerings. Canon is trying to bring people in with their great lenses and they did a great job with adapting the EF lenses. All they need is a few adjustments in the body and they would have a winner. Canon has had the flip screen for years even in entry level bodies. If only other companies would buy into the same type of flip screen.
Great video as always! I switched from canon t3 rebel to sony a7r, mainly because of you and it's amazing!, but those fisheye lens... Man this got me seasickness. You know: "You spin me right round, baby Right round like a record, baby Right round round round"
@@lowQ37 It's up to the person. If you are heavily invested in glass I'm not sure, maybe upgrade to better canon camera. But i used to have only the kit lens so it wasn't that a problem for me. Imho my sony a7r is classes above my old camera, but the lens are pricy you know. I'm looking to picking up photography for part-time while doing my phd so it made sense to me. The features - oh man no comparison. Expensive camera doesn't mean great pictures - but better camera means helpful features and more. Used my canon for training for about 2 yrs. It did the job for that purpose, but my new goals suggested better camera. I'm sure there are people who can give better advice, I'm just sharing my experience. Manny you are the best....you keep motivating me to do more with my photography all day learning
Great video bro and very balanced!
Thanks. This was def
More of a photographers review
I’ve actually gotten some good use from the multifunction bar. I set mine to punch in on my focus point with the right arrow, display my histogram with the left, and my kelvin white balance with the swipe. A lot of people don’t like it but I kinda like having those features available at my finger tips.
“Canon is always crippling their cameras” THAT DID NOT AGE WELL😂💀
They have all the Lenses. Now give me a pro body to use them with. #firstworldproblems
Haha seriously
You mean all the 4 lenses ? 😂
danny castro Don’t have the native lenses?!?! You gotta get up to speed man.
Bro, with a model as beautiful as she is, y’all gonna make it to the top! Mark my words. Congrats!! Much love and success to you both. 😉👍
That's a fair review. Good points overall.
Manny, for the focusing with the finger issue, use the top right of the screen. Its easier and better. Its right where the joystick was on the 5D
This dude takes a picture in one hand while holding a tripod filming. Multi tasking at another level lmfao new sub !
I'm enjoying you testing new cameras!
Maybe he should rather hold the camera with two hands? ;-)
Thank you. I am a canon shooter and I appreciated your commentary.
Walmart Drake! 😂
FTW!
I can't agree more with everything Manny said. It's a straight forward no holds bard review.
Thanks Vincent
Just casually single hand holding the camera and just getting beastly images. And that without is
J Y but as Manny admits after the shoot, many of his shots from inside the parking lot were no good due to camera shake.
You should take another day with R after last 1.2.0 firmware update. ;)
1.4.0 is out now and the IAF problem is totally resolved. It tracks the subject's eye at further distances perfectly.
One hand shooting? Jason would love seeing that. Then I realized you had cameras in both hands. Jason would still love it.
It's not as bad as everyone makes out, the kit lens is pretty soft but the 50mm f1.2 is banging. I quite enjoyed doing a portrait shoot with it at the Christmas markets last year but definitely happy I switched to Sony rather than wait for the EOS R...
Great review Manny , fantastic shots , many thanks
Great, honest review, Manny. As a long-time Canon user, I think you've hit upon what we always face -- great, great lenses with bodies that always seem a bit behind the competition. Granted, I love my 5D Mark IV, but when I shoot with friends' D850s and Sony bodies, I appreciated features I'm missing -- especially with respect to the sensor technology. I look forward to following your channel.
Your video always give me that spark of desire to go out and shoot
The image stabilization on the RF lenses is phenomenal, much better the an adapted EF lens.
Ohh man...!!! Those RF lenses that Canon just announced today are so tempting, look at the length of 70-200 2.8. Like you said if they releasing their new pro body with new IBS sensor, improving Eyes AF and dynamic range, that’d be a solid system from Canon right there.
Dude I’m so excited
Hey Manny greate video. Love to see that you both have fun together.
Much respect for trying other camera brands. If you ever get your hands on a medium format mirrorless camera, that would be amazing.
Hey I really like how you are changing the music to match what’s happing in that video! It adds a lot! Keep it up!
Nice to know someone cares lol thanks
when watching lots of reviews people want so much out of a camera and takes away from you being talented.
Hi Manny, I think you will really get motion blur at 1/60 because its lower than the focal length of the lens (85mm). Still great review. Cheers!
Awesome personal review bro! And you have a very good personal photography model which is always a plus!
Thumbs up for her and a big thumbs up to you bro.🍻
that speck of dust on the sensor at 6:52 made me scream, great video as always though 😂 youre killing it
shooting canon and still wearing sony merch dayumn respect
For the Z6 review - the front Fn buttons are great to use in conjunction with the back dial to change whitebalance or AF modes and other things - customize! :D and the rec button can also be reprogrammed when shooting photos
Adjust and hold the camera with 2 hands as you are supposed to do. However, IBIS would be nice
This is an honest review. I've worked with the A7III and the EOS R and I agree with everything. One thing you didn't touch base on was the color science. I ended up selling my A7III because, for me, skin tones were not what I was used to. Do you use Capture One to convert your raw files?
Which camera is better for photography A7iii or Eos R (better picture quality & color)??
Mention yur insta id also😍🤗🤗
A few people said touch&drag for focus points feels better to them... maybe you should try it as well
Man I wish you had tried out the canon 200 f/2 with the EOS R. I remember how you loved trying it out on your Sony a while back
Wow didn't realize the EOS R has that shade to protect the sensor when it's open. That's actually incredible that Canon put that in. Thank you WalmartPapi
I don't if this is sarcasm, but it's funny that he is referring to it as "the shade".
That is, you know, the actual shutter.
I was looking at getting this camera for my son for his 17th birthday. Would this be a good camera for landscapes, wildlife, and portraits?
My name is Jose Manuel and when mom is upset the Jose drops and I just get the Manuel haha
LMFAOOOOO
Love the gopro style vlog, way better.
Which one you feel it's "faster" in photography? in terms of the EVF? which pleased you more?
Thanks for this great critique on the EOS R. As a A7R3 user, have you ever shot with it in event photography? I own a 5DM3 and I’m still wanting to buy a 2nd camera (A7R3) for event photography and weddings, namely for detail shots and dance floor captures. How say you?
You're hella good at what you do Manny. Keep it up man
Just a thought Manny, you don't like the fact that the EOS R doesn't have IBS ..... but you shoot one handed, surely supporting the camera with both hands would improve camera shake? It is a great camera with some great features.
I primarily use the R for portrait photography and by far my favorite feature is using tilt shift lenses for these portraits and using their new manual focus guide is really fantastic almost like using a rangefinder. It breathes new life into manual focusing in general. Things they should improve on for my own needs: dual card slots, joystick, EYE AF, and tracking in continuous focus.
Which camera is better for photography A7iii or Eos R (better picture quality & color)??
Pls mention yur insta id also 😍😋😎😎
Welcome back to Canon Manny. 😘
I agree with everything you said Manny except the joystick function. The touch screen AF is just faster than using a joystick and you put your touch af selection on the bottom so yea its gonna be hard to reach the shutter button with one hand. Think Canon is shifting towards touch screen AF. I think Canon should change the touch bar to a touch pad that can be used to select AF points, if not replace the D-Pad below with a pad and put custom button functions above where the touch bar is
Be grateful for what you have😂😂😂😂😂😂😂..excellent vid, still stoked on my A7iii.
Year later and everything you asked for is in the R5/R6. Copping?
Great photographer with supermodel wife, life is good Brother!
What do you think about the colour science of sony compared to canon and how can you improve it?
Even though I have been a Nikon shooter for 6 years, but have been shooting with Sony for a couple years as well. ;)
Very honest review, excellent work.
The part where your shoe goes in the water😂😂😂 your reaction is hilarious!
You know:
"You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round"
Калин .Калинков so would you recommend leaving canon t6 rebel for sony???
I'd say check what you got, what you want to do with the camera, what's your goal? Then make your research and then decide. I'd say looking into used camera is a good idea! Whish you luck and happy shooting!
Which camera is better for photography A7iii or Eos R (better picture quality & color)?? 😍😍😎😎
I’m glad to see someone talking about the camera giving it less than rave reviews. It’s a good platform but my experience with it has been lack luster as well.
Walmart Drake lmfao. great video brother
I'm digging these new camera tests. Mainly because they make me feel better about fully switching to Sony from all my Canon stuff lol
I really like the photo at 5:26. Great review.
