I think if you can match the exact parts and fan/light assembly, you may not need to go into the attic, if you're just replacing the overhead fixture, bulb, and just plugging in the new fixture, otherwise, you'll be going into the attic and probably replacing all the exhaust stuff too.
As others have pointed out, not a good idea to vent into the attic. I just had a section of our roof replaced due to mold that had formed and rotted out the wood sheathing. Turns out it was from a vent pipe from a bathroom exhaust fan.
no need to go in attic. the plate retaining the fan motor and blades is removable. locate small retaining screw near the plugins for fan and light. if no set screw look for metal retaining tabs that hold much like a cereal box top. replace fan motor and plate. if new plate wont match up just swap out the motor n reinstall.
Part of the reason for the attic was to make sure wiring was in good shape and it was vented properly. Also, mine was easily accessible. Good to know you can still change it out even if you can't get to the box via the attic. Thanks for the input!
Thank you to the @DrShankopotamus and to you Clint. You tips and video helped me out to just swap it from the bathroom side without getting into the attic.

I just moved into an old small home dating from 1927: luckily the overhead shower fan works fine, as does the main bathroom overhead light, amazingly, so I'm not messing with it. Instead I'll install a battery LED overhead shower light on the ceiling, and leave it at that. I also currently don't have access to the attic, it's locked off and a total mess, from what I was told.

My apartment is old building so no ground or red wires. Instead, I have yellow and gray. 2 whites and gray go together. Blue, black, and yellow go together. Quick research online I was able to figure this out
Indeed you can. Leave the outer box in place and install new guts in it. Take the guts out and find the model number, go to HD or Lowes and buy a new example of same model. Remove guts from new one and install them in old one. Throw away new outer box.. it only takes a few minutes and you DON'T have to go into the attic. Apartment complexes do these by the hundreds.
Did all 4 'metal tabs' of the fan box go to the INSIDE of the plastic duct adapter??? Or just the two opposite tabs that click into the metal fan slots?
The way my old one was set up one switch turned the light and the fan both on or off how would this affect replacing the fan? (The light still works the motor on the fan died out)
I installed the fan/light and the light works but the fan doesn't turn on. Plus there is only one switch for the light Can you tell me hat is wrong with it?
I have the same brand NuTone. I’m in a 3 flat and we don’t have an attic it’s another apartment. I’m pretty sure we have venting out on the side of the building.
You're supposed to in that case...But I was replacing fans at my beach house and the first floor vans were just vented into the space between the floors??? A lotta work to get them to the outside. Builders don't always vent them properly. Thanks for watching.
So when you say about turning off the power, do I need to actually flip off the circuit breaker for the bathroom, or is toggling off the light switch on the wall good enough?
@@MarkRambo1 Replacing a light bulb is not what I consider to be "working with electricity," as it is not my intention to take anything apart or disconnect wires etc (which I probably wouldn't try to do), but thanks.

I have that exact same model - you could have just pulled the motor out from below and replaced it... although by going into the attic you discovered other issues. It's never good to exhaust hot steamy air into an unheated attic space. In my case the idiots nailed it to the joist between floors and I have no access to pull it out without destroying a tile floor or a bunch of ceiling drywall. I'm probably going to have to destructively cut it out as I have a wiring issue behind it.
Good luck with that one...You're right about the attack...but my attack is very large/open, and I elected to keep the exhaust there and not run exhaust hose all the way to the outside...too much work...Thanks for watching.
Glad to hear it was helpful. I've received feedback from several viewers who say you can replace the guts and leave the housing in place without going into the attic. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
INCORRECT!!! It IS a big deal to exhaust warm moist air into your attic. It creates white and black mold, and can rot your roof sheathing, no matter the size of the attic.
Thanks for the input. House was built that way 20+ years ago and not a spot of mold in it. Since it was built(and passed inspection) I saw no reason to take the extra time, extra money and extra risk(see my prior post) to fix it...as I have said many times before...code says exhaust to outside, mine wasn’t so I left it that way...and size does matter. Humidity of the bathroom air will have very little effect on the overall humidity of my attic. Thanks for watching.
Never exhaust in attic and have a timer switch instead of on off. So that fan keeps running after you leave and turn off in few minutes leaving no moisture in the toilet
Great idea for the fan timer. Don't usually recommend exhausting into the attic, but have tons of room up there and too much trouble to run the exhaust all the way out...Thanks for watching.
If the fan is working there might be a short in the light circuit. Mine is on two separate switches at the wall as well...make sure there isn't a problem with the wall switch and/or wiring. Good luck.
"It's ok to exhaust into the attic" he says. Well right there it is apparent you have no idea what you are talking about. It is not ok to vent into an attic--period. If you don't understand that you don't understand condensation and other basics. Plus it is really as easy as it gets when you have full access on a steep pitch roof in the attic. Do that in a 4/12 pitch or less and see how easy those maneuvers are! In many cases you will have to do everything from down in the bathroom opening the sheet rock if necessary. It is also very important to insulate your ducting from the fan to the outside which is another high condensation area.
We have already been over this...😉. Fan was exhausted into the attic (by the builder) for 20+ years without any damage. The attic is huge. Yes, code says to exhaust to the outside, but my house came with that particular fan exhausted into the attic and i decided to leave it there and not go traipsing around the huge attic to lay 20-30 feet of exhaust conduit, cut a hole in the soffit and fall two stories while trying to attach the coding approved duct terminals to the outside...You're point is well taken. But I believe my reasoning is sound. Thanks for watching. And taking the time to help out with fixin' stuff.
@@DrShankopotamus these people that have absolutely nothing to do with your house seem so mad. Thanks for posting the video. Found what i needed to know and it was helpful! Have a great day!
There was a post from another user who said it could be done without getting in the attic. I guess there might be a way to leave the outer box in place and just change out the fan and light assembly. Since most are secured in the attic from outside the box, I would think you must be in the attic to change out the box. Hope this helps...
Most people would have to cut the sheet rock to get it out then you would call a good spackle guy to fix it. Or destroy the box with tin snips and a grinder or sawzall. This way would avoid destroying your sheet rock.
I've installed several with cutting the sheet rock...You're right!...My recommendation is to cut carefully and small. You can always cut more but you can't cut less. Thanks for watching.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO GET THE COVER OFF... HE SHOWS HOW IT'S MADE BUT NOT HOW TO GET IT OUT... I JUST WANT TO CHANGE THE LIGHT BULB... THERE IS NO WAY TO GET YOUR HANDS ON IT TO PULL IT DOWN.. IT'S JUST FLAT... PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN....
I came here to learn how to disconnect the fan but keep the light. I can't stand the noise of the fan. Perhaps it's just me but i find the noise to be very loud. Nobody in my house agrees with me however; either I happen to have above normal hearing in the particular frequency range/decibel level of the fan, or every one else has a hearing loss in that particular frequency/decibel range 😂😂 It will be a temporary fix until I get around to installing a new switch with 2 switches: 1 for the light only, 1 for the fan only.
I assume you mean from your power/switch supply...This would mean you only have one control for both fan and light. You would need to install second switch or just hook your fan and light to the same switch. Check your install instructions with the unit to be sure you can do it this way. Hope this helps...Thanks for watching.
You can go digging around through the box and check the connections for the light...or just replace the fan. One option...When you replace the fan, turn the power back on very carefully with terminal twists on each wire so you don't start a fire. You can use a multi meter to be sure you are getting power to the fan light. If you have power turn the power back off and install your new fan. If you don't have power call an electrician. Another option. Just install the new fan and see if the light works, if it doesn't then there's a problem with the wiring...call an electrician.
I'm pretty sure the same people built my house. Everything done path of least resistance. I've been suffering for a couple years now trying to figure this thing out. Unfortunately, I has some drywall issues I suspect from this bad boy.
Definitely can have issues. Some love to knock me for exhausting to the attic...but it's HUGE! I was amazed to find my downstairs fans were exhausted into the floor space between the first and second floor. I was able to get one of them out to an outside wall, but some of the others have no where to go without dismantling the ceiling.
You can replace them without going into the attic. The hard part can sometimes be getting the old one out. On a few I had to remove the "guts" and use shears to cut the metal box to get at the nails/screws holding it in. I've done several that way. I'll see if I can get a video on the next one I do. Thanks for watching.
Holy crap! This guy is talking about wearing a mask 4 years ago. He's a time traveler 🔥. So when you break that nut when trying to replace that fan and light would you call that you just busted your nut?
This is such a pain in the you know what. I have a split level house and the attic is super tight and cramped with no decking whatsoever on the joists. Not to mention the fan I need to replace is in a corner with barely any room. I'm to damn old and fat to be doing all that lol
Thanks for watching...House was built with van vented into the attic and was that way for 20+ years...No damage...Attic is HUGE (as I show in the video) and bathroom is small. Otherwise, definitely vent to the outside, but the continued controversy has been great fun.
Please don't ever vent your warm moist bathroom air into your attic space. Trust me this is coming from someone who had to sell a house that had mold in the attic. We had to spend $5,000 in mold remediation due toa bathroom then that it was unknowingly venting into the attic.
Absolutely correct in most cases. Mine was vented to the HUGE attic for 20+ years without any damage, so I left it that way. Just put a fan in my daughters house and cut through the roof to get it vented outside...Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the info...That's the word from several other viewers as well. And would avoid my attic time and the whole "vent was in the attic and I left it there" controversy😂😂😂...Thanks for the input and thanks for watching
Actually, not venting your exhaust fan to the exterior of your house is a code violation. It's unfortunate that the good doctor doesn't do a bit more research on basic residential codes before sharing his wisdom with the internet world.
You saw mine was exhausted right onto the sheet rock. The attic is very large...No mold/moisture yet after 20 years...Was a calculated guess just to get it up off the drywall. If your attic is smaller I would definitely exhaust to outside.
Mine is not exhausted. It’s the original unit since the home was built in 1993. I am in Alabama, could be because we don’t experience frigid cold winters like the North?

@@DrShankopotamus REALLY BAD DECISION!
@@DrShankopotamus these people that have absolutely nothing to do with your house seem so mad. Thanks for posting the video. Found what i needed to know and it was helpful! Have a great day!
Hey is there a way around the attic?
There was a post from another user who said it could be done without getting in the attic. I guess there might be a way to leave the outer box in place and just change out the fan and light assembly. Since most are secured in the attic from outside the box, I would think you must be in the attic to change out the box. Hope this helps...
There should be 3 like tabs on that allow the motor to seperate from the case
This was very helpful, thanks!
Ugh, I gotta go in the attic tomorrow now. I was hoping I could swap it out without having to go up there. Ugh ugh ugh.
This was EPIC! That's the comment.
Nobody in my house agrees with me however; either I happen to have above normal hearing in the particular frequency range/decibel level of the fan, or every one else has a hearing loss in that particular frequency/decibel range 😂😂
It will be a temporary fix until I get around to installing a new switch with 2 switches: 1 for the light only, 1 for the fan only.
But what if you don't have the red color.??
I assume you mean from your power/switch supply...This would mean you only have one control for both fan and light. You would need to install second switch or just hook your fan and light to the same switch. Check your install instructions with the unit to be sure you can do it this way. Hope this helps...Thanks for watching.
I have that same fan. My light doesn't work, not a bad bulb.
Very helpful. Many thanks
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching.
I feel confident after 15:00 minutes. But I could just hold the camera and you could install mine too...just saying! Thanks for the video.
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
@@DrShankopotamus I can't get the box out of the ceiling!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's in some kind of a crimped railing attached in the attic between the boards
How about blue wire .
I have that exact fan that was poorly installed and not working well.. I'll be replacing with a bigger fan that doesn't have a light.
Thanks!!
Great video👍😊
Does anybody else hear American Pie in the other room at the beginning ?
I'm pretty sure the same people built my house. Everything done path of least resistance. I've been suffering for a couple years now trying to figure this thing out. Unfortunately, I has some drywall issues I suspect from this bad boy.
Definitely can have issues. Some love to knock me for exhausting to the attic...but it's HUGE! I was amazed to find my downstairs fans were exhausted into the floor space between the first and second floor. I was able to get one of them out to an outside wall, but some of the others have no where to go without dismantling the ceiling.
What if you can't get in the attic? There's just a small square spot that an adult can't fit through
You can replace them without going into the attic.
Like ur videos
Why would you exhaust moisture into your attic? 🤦♂️
Why didn’t you mention that you could easily replaced the motor without having to go in the attic?
Thank you!
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching
This is such a pain in the you know what. I have a split level house and the attic is super tight and cramped with no decking whatsoever on the joists. Not to mention the fan I need to replace is in a corner with barely any room. I'm to damn old and fat to be doing all that lol
I have the same one it’s so loud
Bath fan must be vented out the roof or side of building. Otherwise moisture and mold accumulates
Thanks for watching...House was built with van vented into the attic and was that way for 20+ years...No damage...Attic is HUGE (as I show in the video) and bathroom is small. Otherwise, definitely vent to the outside, but the continued controversy has been great fun.
Mine is downstairs no attic
Skipped the reinstallation of the new components.
Just put a fan in my daughters house and cut through the roof to get it vented outside...Thanks for watching.
ah hell. i'm not climbing int he attic...will just stay the way it is.....
You can replace just the motor, if you’re looking to save a few bucks.
Its never a good idea to exhaust moisture into a cold attic! # mould
Shit … I’m in a bilevel and this is in the lower lever … there is no attic … now what?
No Audio
I am trying to get a bird out of my ceiling!! Thnx!
No way I’m doing this. No attic only crawl space. Time to hire an electrician or handyman
Might be a good call!
👍🏻
These videos do not need your radio playing while you talk!
SON OF A BISCUIT!!!!!! This the same exact one I have. The attic????? Noooooooo!!!!!!😰😰😰😰
Yep...In the attic. It stopped in the attic 20+ yrs ago with the original builder...and that's where I left it. Go figure. Thanks for the feedback.😊
