Osage orange is a fascinating wood with a fascinating history in the USA. It was saved from extinction through a series of events that included it's protection by the Osage nation of indigenous people who traded the wood which is the finest bow wood in the eastern 2/3 of the nation. I donate objects I've turned to a gift shop on an historic site where I volunteer. I use wood from the property, and we have a lot of Osage orange. It sells quickly, probably for the novelty. But as you have probably noticed, it feels like porcelain when finished, and sounds like it too. I make lidded boxes that are almost like china. Yesterday I made a handle for a new Robert Sorby skew identical to the one you used in the video before this one, it makes a heavy and strong handle that can be exceptionally smooth, if you like that in a handle--there are drawbacks. The wood has a striking chatoyance. The yellow will darken in time to brown. It is exceptionally dense and heavy, burns hottest of any of our woods, is extremely rot resistent and has other extraordinary qualities. There's much more that can be said about it, it's a very unusual tree and wood. Oh--and I run my dust collector. my Powermatic air filter, a window exhaust fan right above my lathe, and wear a mask whenever I turn it.
That is fascinating, its begin to grow on my but we don't have it here in Croatia....this was odd tree on medical Campus and I manage to get few logs from a frend near it.... And I did burn ofcuts and a little bit goes a long way...it really burns hot and long.😉 Thank you for watching and support what I do
What a beautiful piece. I've only turned a few pieces from Osage orange and also find it very dusty, but the beauty of the wood more than makes up for the dust! Thank you for sharing.
I grew up calling this species of wood “hedge” and it is commonly used as corner posts for fences. When it’s dry it is often too hard to drive a nail or fence staple into without bending. A good hedge post will last for generations here in Indiana. Loggers often say that when they are cutting Osage Orange trees sparks fly off the chainsaw teeth! I love to turn it. It takes a fine finish.
Tomi, I am so glad that you did this video on the Osage Orange as I was gifted a 13" x 26" round of this stunning yellow dense wood. Your skills at achieving a stunning piece like this gives me hope of a successful outcome. Thank you sir for all you share,
Very nice looking plate; that wood really does have some appealing figure. I really like the outside shape and appreciate your explanation of how you got the shape.
Hello my friend, It's nice to see something new, beautiful and comfortable being created! A smart head and golden hands are the keys to success. Good luck in creativity. All the best. See you.
I like it,that osage orange is a heavy wood I got a big osage orange tree up across from my house. The electric company came through they had to cut some limbs that were to close to the power lines. The were going to run it through the chipper and I said, can I have that wood just toss it in my yard I can take my trailor and pick it up. I told them Thanks.I made some osage segmented vases, they turned out to be quite beautiful.
Hey, I was on the AAW forum this morning, and in the beginner part, you were recommended for a 'new' turning mentor for your videos. I agreed! So many have turning channels, and they don't know what they are doing.....
I've yet to turn Osage Orange. It always looks nice but I didn't realize how dusty it was. I really like the detail you included in that plate, Tomislav! Lots to look at and the chatoyancy really deepens the look.
Beautiful plate! My daughter-in-laws dad gave me a lot of Osage Orange and I agree, it makes a dusty mess in the shop. I turned only 2 bowls out of it, and though they are very unique with the wood grain, I don’t think I’ll be turning any more. I was told that wood burns long and hot in the wood stove and winters coming, lol!
I love turning the stuff! Locally, in central Texas, the trees are called "Horse Apple" trees and less commonly "Bois d'Arc". I never heard the term "Osage Orange" before I started turning. The last osage orange I turned became a little family of mushrooms. 😉 Nice job, as usual!
Bois D’arc is French for “Wood of the bow” supporting a previous posters statement of its use by Native Americans. Where I used to live people called it “bodock” or even Burdock, which is a completely different plant.
Hello TOMISLAV Thank you for your videos. You work very finely with your scrapers. What are your sharpening angles? Did you draw the shapes yourself? Thank you. See you soon.
Thank you very much, I have video on this, and I'll do more soon as well. ruclips.net/video/-AZD4WkaPi4/видео.htmlsi=7RuY0qXqAzJ8J_1Q You'll find shapes and angles here☺️
Nice looking plate. Osage orange (most likely different species) grows wild in my area. It rarely gets big enough to make this size of plate. Mine is very dense and very hard. It polishes well and holds hand cut screw threads well. Another difference is a color shift. Mine goes from the color of your plate to a deep orange highlighted brown. It is used mostly for fence posts where I live because it is so dense that termites and ants won't invade it! I'm going off topic here. I just want to compliment you on your plate. It's quite attractive!
Osage orange also is fantastic musical instrument wood-as hard and resonant as Brazilian rosewood or African Blackwood. It’s mostly been passed over because of the non- traditional color when first worked.
Soon I will save more on timbers like these, but in this case it will be a really small saved piece..... And on thin stock like this you always risk to get to deep and then you dont have anything left😅...dont ask how I know😂 Thank you very much for watching
Hi, my guess is you used Google translation so it did mess some words, most chucks apart from let say vm150 can go on smaller lathes without problem, you only have to have correct thread size and type.

Indeed, really nice stuff and I still have to turn 4 big bowls out of it in few months
Looks like a winner cool plate love the color
Love the grain in that wood it’s definitely the first I’ve seen of that colour.

Nicely said sir,its a great timber and also offcuts burn so long and high it just great all round wood
Beautiful! And the bright yellow will turn a lovely golden brown over time. Great design to show off that grain.
Thank you very much 🤗

It is a messy wood but fun to turn, as long as you have sharp tools and patience. Looks great!
Thank you, it does work great
Love the color in the wood. Have yet to get ahold of some but one day I will. Great job as always 👍
Thank you very much
Awesome piece. Glad I found your channel.

Beautiful plate. I will remember your method of turning the Ogee. It looks very attractive.
Thank you 😀
Beautiful plate Tomislav.

Well, if we had Star Trek transporters, I would come over and have a play date with you. Like your work!

Outstanding woRK. It became a piece of wood 😃😃
Thanks 😀
A stunning piece of wood and a stunning plate nicely done Tom

Its great pattern in this plate, I wonder how the bowls will turn out 😉

Thank you sir.... I can verified the long and hot burning property 😂
Very nice plate! Turning oasge orange is almost like turning bloodwood. Your shop turns yellow instead of red!
Take care, Dave
Thank you Dave, luckily I don't have acces to bloodwood 😂

Yes. It's pronounced "bow-dark" around here. Cheers! @@fciron
Very beautiful plate! Your piece has some amazing grain as well. I’ve turned a little bit of Osage Orange but mine was darker.
Cheers, Stuart
Thank you Stuart, osage changes color so your piece could be a bit older😀
Good demonstration on how to do an ogee curve.
Its simple , thank you, its a method from Jimmy clewes....

That's lovely. It's the biggest piece of Osage Orange I#e ever seen... up to now it's all been pen blanks.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Thank you Brendan 😉
The grain is awesome, to bad it's so dusty. Beautiful deep plate. It should be Osage yellow for this piece.
Excactly 😅 thank you for watching
Beautiful!

Its lovely to work as well, apart from dust stuff😂
Nice i have not turned a plate or platter yet i need to try thanks
Once you go that direction, its hard to get back😂.... thank you for watching
Nice plate design.. I have never seen Osage orange turned. Looks exotic.
Thank you, indeed it is, hard, dense, dusty , but beautiful...

That's a beautiful plate. I was concerned about the height of the rim to beginwith but it was perfect in the end.
Thank you,☺️
Another good project Tomislav. Did you buy that scraper as it is or did you grind it to that shape?
I just had a look at the tools link and it answered my question.
I shape all my tools... Here is video on how I do it.....ruclips.net/video/-AZD4WkaPi4/видео.htmlsi=7RuY0qXqAzJ8J_1Q
Thanks for the video. Great job. The new year is coming soon, make a toy for the new year. Just don't let it be a plate or a bowl.
I'm bowl turner.... So ofcourse it will be bowl or plate
H hi tom I bought a 110 chuck with sawtooth jaws as do you think it will work for my lathe I have a 1 sde 1 horse midi lathe? THANKS

Hello Tom Thank you for your response, indeed the translator makes mistakes, I am sorry. Have a nice day thank you
I have two very huge trees in my front yard here in NE Ky for anyone interested.
👍
❤
🤗
fun fact this wood will burn way to hot to use to heat your home and will throw sparks when cut with a saw
In about 2-3 years, Osage turns light brown no matter what you seal it with.
Its normal thing, most of flashy woods like osage , Purple heart changes color with time
Ive always been told the dust from this wood is very dangerous to your health without a full breathing mask being worn ?????
Could be, ofcourse all safery aspect is personal preference and decision , and obligation.... Most if all of timbers are not safe in dust format
This video just goes to show how extremely dull and worthless my tools are
Sharpening with jig might help you if you are not happy with results, also platform sharpening will help as well to start learning freehand
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thanks for your expertise! I hear that I need to invest in a low speed bench grinder ?
@@_allthingsdude ahhh, some put those to the sky,I like mine full speed, its all in light touch which ever you are using.... Both will do the job
