- All during my growing up years, I loved listening to my mother practice the piano during the late evenings when we were all in bed, supposedly asleep. I would listen intently to her music during those evenings, and to this day, I still have memories of her practice sessions with Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Debussy and Grieg, just to name a few. What a wonderful legacy we have from my amazing mother! I have enjoyed recording my mother play some of her Classical piano favorites. She loves Debussy! And I have fond memories of her practicing "Reverie" throughout my growing up years.
Reverie - by Claude Debussy
Carol Larson, piano (age 83)
Recorded on April 12, 2020 in St. George Utah.
I love this description of Reverie on "Classic FM":
"More proof, as if it were needed, that Claude Debussy was the master of creating dream-like atmospheres in his piano music.
"Written in 1890, Debussy's Reverie was one of his first solo piano works to make an impact. Even at this early stage in his career, when he was still working out what kind of composer he wanted to be (he was apparently a fervent debater when it came to Wagnerism), it's clear to see traits of that signature Debussy sound.
"However, the young Debussy had not quite developed the style and tricks that would earmark him as one of his generation's most notable talents. There are no fireworks here, no sudden explosions in texture that would come to characterise his later works - this is more of a meditation, the perfect precursor to exploring those later works.
"The gently repetitive theme that opens the work feels like a descent into sleepy dream-world (as the title suggests), and as the textures become ever richer the dreams only become more lush and addictive. A fantastic early sign that this Debussy fellow was one to watch…"

Debussy wasn't particularly proud of this composition, but I'm sure he would have appreciated this unnafected and honest rendition. Very unique.
BEAUTIFUL.¨!!!!!!!!!!!
I listen to this everyday. Tell your mother thank you!
My mom continues to amaze us all with her incredible talent!
Mrs Selma, your mom is very very BRAVA! 🎶🎵👏👏👏❤️🙏

Danke schön für die schöne Musik!
Austrian?
Old people sometimes ask to heaven, why am I still here? An answer is, because of music.
Sadly most popular composers had a pretty tragic life.
Such a beautiful thought

I could listen to Debussy all day. Your mom rocks!
It's not that often I like a video but this got one from me. I'm learning this now and struggling. I found this very special to watch. Thanks.

This put a huge smile on my face. What a wonderful pianist, clearly not diminished by age. I'm learning this piece for my grade 8, and it's very inspiring to think I might still be playing the piece at 83!

Beautiful, I'm 23 years old and learned and performed classical since I was 8. You are truly an inspiration to so many and especially myself! This was awesome!!! ♥️
This was my first piano teachers favorite book. She was 89 when I met her, I haven't spoken to her in a long time and I hope she is still alive and doing well. Her 93rd birthday will be on May 5th :)
Lovely! Thank you for sharing this beautiful performance!

Meaning of life...
this is on my list to learn but i made the mistake of starting with arabesque, oops.
It's not a mistake, my guy.
Arabesque is easier. I learned it but it took a solid 2 months. It's a beautiful piece tho. Made some people cry by playing it. If you're looking for an easier piece you could try the girl with the flaxen hair. In Gb so it's got 6 flats but easier to play.
@@kowalskianalysis1710 Bro, I'm learning Girl with Flaxen hair. That piece peaks at Grade 9 on RCM. If there's anything easy, its "Footprints in the snow"
@@divyap4357 I haven't heard that piece. I learned girl with flaxen hair after arabesque and found it a lot easier
