"I will develop my singing technique so that I sound like butter, then I will dress up as a clown and call myself Puddles and sing pop songs with such heart and feeling and expression that people cry."

When I first saw him on AGT I wanted to immediately dismiss him as just someone with a gimmick to make up for a lack of talent. But there is no lack of talent and while the whole clown persona is gimmicky, he somehow makes it all work. I didn't really get the meaning of this song until I heard him sing it.

I think you nailed it with the genius of the clown persona. Once he's become a clown he can then fully become the music without it coming across as overly dramatic, he's two steps removed from just a person at that point. He is the song.

I was front row in Charleston, SC a few years back. He picked me to help him off the stage then proceeded to take my phone and filmed himself singing "Unchained Melody" before giving my phone to someone else and taking their phone. By the end of the song about a dozen of us met at the stage to get our phones back and have pictures taken with Puddles. It was the most fun show I've ever been to!

One things about Clowns is that they are the heart of the circus. They might not talk, but their body expressions are there to elicit emotions. See Chaplin for example, ranging from The Boy to Great Dictator. They are able to show the true emotion that most performers can't.
Puddles is brilliant, the sadness, the desperation on this song. It hits home

Your analysis of Puddles technique helps me better grasp what the artist is doing with this song to make it his. I've long wondered why this talented man would choose a clown persona to make his art through. When you explain how we can accept the artistic flair and movements through a clown character and can not accept the same through a mere man, this I understood. His persona adds an element of theater that a middle aged man in a suit lacks, and this makes perfect sense.

  • @johnjay9404

You're right, the emotional inflection and body language would never work as well had he not been in a clown suit. It's definitely an intense character. Your reaction to the end of the song was...powerfully sincere. I choked up, watching you, watching him.

It's great to see The Charismatic Voice, see this song. One of the elements to the delivery and quality of the singing is, the weight he gives to the words. They mean something, it's not just a collection of words that sound good together. Also, I really struggle with understanding lyrics in general, I'm more rhythm and sound first, as I hear this better. I'm not sure why, either it's mechanically or electrically in the old brain, but, see listening to this song and others he's done. You can just hear the words. They make sense; it's a short play with music. Tone and involvement. Brilliant.

I noticed he fiddles with the pompoms a couple of times. I don't know if it's his own comfort thing, or is it the character's, but I'm assuming it's the latter because he's an extraordinary performer and has the mannerisms really thought out. Really fits in with this performance, with the singer feeling shame and anxiety.

What he's doing with this song is incredible. In the verses, you hear who he really is - the shame and sadness and a bitter response to how much he is sought after for partying and fun.
Then he goes into the chorus and he's swinging from a chandelier, big sweeping and positive, because it's all just this sham persona who is hiding the true, suffering person underneath.
I know they're not his lyrics. But the way he thought about the context of what the lyrics mean and how to present them emotionally, all fantastic!

This was gut-wrenching beautiful. My opinions of clowns are neither here nor there, but Puddles is the first to bring tears to my eyes. Wow. His song choices(that ive heard so far) are interesting. The other one I just heard was from another female writing about her difficulties(Royals I think it was). I also believe his character kinda gives him permission to really dramatize these emotions that, like you stated, would seem a bit over the top from a normal persona. On a side note, I've heard the original a couple times in the past, and the last time I was flipping through radio stations and heard it, and loved it(which is rare, cuz im mostly into different genres of metal), and they never said the artist. As soon as the chorus kicked in here, I was like oh shit...here it is. Great analysis/reaction, as always!

One thing that stands out to me is that in Sia’s version, the arrangement and vocals escalate in unison from “party girls” to “123” to “I wanna swing”. Puddles starts melancholy, and doesn’t follow the arrangement when it swells into “123”. It gives it a feeling that he really doesn’t want to be there. And then when we hit “I wanna swing”, it’s like the curtain raises, the mask is on, and it’s show time. The fabulous persona of this “party girl” comes out, and it shows how false it is. The gestures and mannerisms fit the flip of the switch.

Love Puddles, and that look at the end.. Aftershock goosebumps is it. Beauty, pain, art, the deepest expressions of the human experience, the truth of the human heart, come at times-and often sublimely, transcendently-from unexpected sources. A clown? Yes. Theatre in its glory.
Which is why I very much want to recommend Klaus Nomi’s live version of “The Cold Song”, which will, without the slightest doubt in my mind, utterly blow you away. For the most poignant beauty shines in the deepest blue depths of our loss.
I hope others will back me here. “The Cold Song” live is a singular performance from an artist who defined the unusual as art. If you love Puddles, you will want to see Klaus Nomi’s unparalleled work.

So, I just watched the official video from Sia and what I got from her style was a person who doesn't know how to quit a toxic lifestyle and so continues to just go through the motions. What I get from Puddles' rendition is that we are watching a person who is trapped, knows they are trapped and is having a complete breakdown, begging for help, all the while knowing that they don't know anyone who can help them.

@The Charismatic Voice you need to do a video of No Rain by Blind Melon and use the official video. It's about depression and anxiety, has a great guitar solo, amazing vocals, and unfortunately the lead singer Shannon Hoon passed away from a drug overdose. It was HUUUUGE during the grunge era. You won't be disappointed in the song.

Great reaction\ analysis. The end of this hit hard to the point i was wondering if we were seeing some personal issue of the artist coming through in very dire lyrics. Scotts arrangement and how he couches Puddles with these little ornaments between the lines. Even more so in Royals. There’s just such palpable expression of well crafted writing and performance. Kinda spoiled wwith it all
