- When I first saw this rig at Northwest Overland Rally, It was immediately my favorite of the show. For how capable this rig is, and the livability it has, this setup is hard to beat. Joe does such a great job going over this rig, that I decided to split it up into two episodes, so be sure to check out the interior video as well!

What a cool overland rig
That is a badass rig. It might have been built for the desert but it would be right at home in the pinewoods of the southeast with those tires and the ability to cross deep mudholes to get way back in a national forest or hunting property.
I'm in Alabama just outside of Pensacola fl. but I think the 40's are to big for a gas truck but it's definitely a cool truck

@@Down2Mob I'm only talking about on roads traveling to the desert I've been offroading for years and I roll with BF a/t's and usually only get 30,000 miles on em those tires he's running If I guessed won't get that many miles I'm thinking they're like the Mickey Thompson's guys put on there trucks back in the 80's I'm sticking with A/T's but I'm not as experienced as that shop so I'm sure he knows what he is doing

Its well thought no doubt but you dont need 40's lets be realistic. They are trying to achieve a look that will sell but not necessarily practical. The spare location would have been better used for a bigger camper.

Funny he prefers the gas motor too bad they don't offer 3.0 eco diesel for the 2500 and larger really don't need a 6.7 unless your towing huge weight but maybe 3.0 Evo could work well inan application like this
I’m saving for a pop up camper to put on my regular cab ram 1500 4x4 hemi so I can have a similar looking rig and still tow my toys.
Phil that's awesome! It's almost exactly how I'm building mine I'm putting a flatbed on my 2015 F-250 and a Bundutec camper on it no 40's though I'm staying at 35's the 6.2 gaser I have I think will do great I can't wait to see the inside

Until I bought a Diesel, I would have agreed with you. Diesels are great. But, you can't deny his logic. 1) Diesel is much harder to find where he travels. 2) Selecting Diesel and its associated transmission adds ~ 700 pounds. The truck is a LOT more sluggish when cornering. Also, the Diesel's weight correspondingly detracts ~700 pounds from the truck's carrying capacity. (Ignoring the rated GVW is ill advised, illegal, and a liability if you get in an accident)
I have been going to Baja since 1990 drone 2001 to present I have never had any problem finding diesel fuel from Ensenada to Cabo east or west coast. I have a 01dodge Ram quad cab with a 12 ft camper and flat towing my Jeep Cherokee. Plan your trip properly I have a 35 gallon tank and once I cross the boarder I fill two 6 gallon cans for emergency. Diesel in Baja no problem.
How does one unload and load the spare tire located in that position? Is there a hoist, or do you just hope you have friends nearby?

He only gave 2 reasons: diesel availability in Baja and front end weight of diesel engine. Did not list 3rd reason :(

Now THIS is the type of rig I consider optimal. It can travel tight, narrow trails, something that the gigantic 'Earth Roamer' style camper you showed cannot do. And, it doesn't need a 900 horsepower Diesel to get around.
