- Pneumothorax nursing interventions, treatment, pathophysiology NCLEX review for the different types of pneumothorax: open pneumothorax vs closed pneumothorax vs tension pneumothorax. A pneumothorax is the collection of air inside the intrapleural space which causes the lung to collapse. There are various types of pneumothorax. An open pneumothorax (also called sucking chest wound) is an opening in the chest wall (from a gun shot, stabbing etc.) that causes a passage of outside air betwen the intrapleural space which allows air to pass back and forth during inspiration and expiration. A closed pneumothorax is when air leaks into the intrapleural space without any outside wound, hence the chest wall and pleural stay intact (could be from a rib fracture where the bony part of the bone punctures the lung which causes air to be released into the intrapleural space). A tension pneumothorax is a complication of a pneumothorax due to an open or closed pneumothorax. It is a medical emergency. It happens when the opening to the intrapleural space creates a one-way valve which causes air to collect in the intrapleural space and the air cannot escape. This causes major compression on the lungs and heart leading to a mediastinum shift and tracheal deviation. Pneumothorax nursing interventions include maintaining chest tube drainage system, monitoring lungs sounds, vital signs etc. Don't forget to watch the video on chest tube care for nurses.

You should teach professors how to teach! I sat through a 4 hour lecture on this topic and came out more confused! I listened to your video and it totally made sense! Thank you for what you do! You are truly a life saver and are helping me get through nursing school!
I'm watching this video in 2021 and I can totally relate. She's indeed a life saver. Thank you soooo much Sarah
First of all, I just want to say how thankful I am for these videos. I recommend your videos to all my friends who are in nursing school and to those who are about to take their NCLEX . While i was studying for my exam, I would always watch your NCLEX playlist as my review and would play it in the background while doing chores. Ive recently taken the exam and passed it!! Your acid base videos and the mnemonics associated with them were so amazing. I will always remember "acidotic" "alkali" "depress" and "tachypnea" and your tic tac toe method. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. You helped me pass NCLEX.
Congratulations on passing NCLEX, Jamie! THANK YOU very, very much for coming back to let me know my videos helped you prepare for NCLEX...that is so awesome! I'm so happy you liked my mnemonics....they definitely make learning easier and more interesting. I wish you the best in your nursing career as a nurse, and again thank you very much for taking the time to watch my videos. Congrats to you :) I hope you have a Merry Christmas!
Makes much sense. I'm in Med Surg now...I need every resources I can place my hands on... Your videos are just the best!
I have an exam today over this- watching your videos is nothing like reading the textbook. Thank you so much!!!
Wooow, am from Kenya and i had to come back and comment how greatly your lectures have helped me as a student and future registered nurse. Its brief and simple to grasp. Thanks to you. Blessings to you
I just became a RGNurse thanks to your videos 😊 Now I continue to watch as I start my career as an ICU nurse
Thank you so much for all your videos. You are better than any teacher I have ever had. I love how you simplify everything. I am doing so well in my nursing degree because of you!! Please don't ever stop teaching. You have a gift! :) xx
Taking a Progressive Care Course test, your videos are great review since it has been 4 years since the NCLEX, great refresher, especially your cardiac videos.
I had a Spontaneous Pneumothorax. I'm not sure if it was primary or secondary as I'm a 5ft1 45 yr old female smoker for 20 yrs. I couldn't breathe fora week, my boss at work pushed me to go to ER by ambulance and after a chest X-ray was told I needed a chest tube immediately. Couldn't believe it! Ended up in the hospital for 14 days and on the 8th day, had VATS Pleurodesis. Never smoking or vaping again. But I'm afraid to exercise, run, use a trampoline, travel you name it. I read that there's a 50% chance of it happening again. Dear God.
I just want to say, I'm a firefighter in paramedic school, God and your videos are helping me tremendously. Keep up everything you're doing. God bless
You're most welcome :) Thank you for the kind comment. I wish you the best in paramedic school!

Let me firstly say thank you for these amazing lectures. I'm a foreign trained RN preparing to write my NCLEX. I had spontaneous pneumothorax 4 times in 2012 and had it corrected. I still have intermittent stabbing pain in my right anterior chest up to today. I'd like to know if that's normal.
You are a gift sent from heaven to me. Helping grasp understanding of my med surge rotation. What i read in text book go in one ear and out theeee other and the instructors go so fast in their lecture. Please dont let up. How can i make a donation ?
Thank you so much for watching the videos. I'm so glad they've helped you :) I appreciate the offer for a donation, but I prefer that you just tell as many people as you can about our free RUclips channel to help them through nursing school. Thank you again for watching the videos :)
Thank you very much for this video! As someone who has recently experienced a spontaneous pneumothorax this lecture has been a huge help in understanding exactly what happened that day. The local hospital system here in northern Colorado really needs to make your series mandatory for all of their ER nurses. I was lucky that >one< of the nurses knew what she was looking at. None of the other personnel had any idea. You're doing a wonderful service with this series. Thanks again!
amazing !! thank u so much ♥ from ALGERIA

I’m 24 years old and have had 5 spontaneous pneumothorax over the course of 7-8 years. 7 chest tubes placed, 4 minor 3 major and have had a pluerodesis done. My most recent was the 4th of May this year. Nobody can tell me why this keeps happening to me so I guess I’m just gonna be dealing with this for the rest of my life. Can’t explain how fed up I am with this.
Very clearly explained, Thank you. 😊
I’m studying ahead mes surge before school. You are the best teacher ever ever ever ever thanks. From Florida

Hi Hi I am RN and your videos are really cool. just one question, I have looked after couple of patients with pneumothorax and when I check their chest xrays, it really gets me confused whether its the heart in white part or actually shrinking of the lungs. is there any way to better read the xrays?
Thank for your productive presentation
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'm so glad the video helped! I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video!

Thank you so much for the comment. Yes, I most definitely plan on creating a video on CF in the near future. Thanks for the suggestion.
Can u make video on high frequency oscillator ventilator and nitric oxide asministration
Wonderful 👏👏👏👏
I have a question. Is there another name for a closed pneumothorax? I have looked through my textbook and it never mentions "closed" pneumothorax. Thanks!
Your book will probably refer to it as "spontaneous"...which is a type of closed pnemuo because there is no damage to the chest wall which contributed to the pneumo. I hope that helps. Thank you for watching the video :)
It may fall under primary pneumothorax as the subpleural blebs undergo rupture.
WOW! Just awesome!
Thank you 😃
Thank you. you are awesome
You're very welcome :) THANK YOU so much for watching the video! I appreciate it!
You are the best❤❤
hi, when you study for exit hesi which book did you read? I have both books u recommended . I have less than 4 weeks to prepare .reading and comparing both books plus watching your videos. I like it but I find more time consuming and having less time practicing questions .. which book should I focos on the hesi or the Saunders book? what Is your recommendations? .. thank you in advance!!!
Hello :) For the exit HESI specifically, I read the HESI book mainly, but I used the Saunders software (which comes with the Saunders book) to practice NCLEX questions. The exit HESI book didn't contain that many review questions as compared to Saunders.
Be sure you pay close attention to the HESI hints in the book (questions come from this material) and the end of the chapter questions. What I done was I would read a section in the exit HESI book....say respiratory and then I would practice strictly respiratory questions by selecting this on the Saunders software. It really helped me! Since you have 4 weeks to prep (which is plenty of time)...practice questions everyday and make a study outline of what areas you plan to study and start with the areas you struggle with. Also, of courses, take the questions the HESI book came with as well. I wish you the best on it! I hope that helps :)
thank you so much!! you ease my anxiety!!! ..Happy Holidays
Nice 😊
