  • Asthma treatment (asthma attack), symptoms, pathophysiology nursing NCLEX review lecture. This lecture will detail the pathophysiology of asthma along with the early warning signs vs active signs of an asthma attack. In addition to a sample asthma action plan along with using a peak flow meter to monitor asthma, asthma triggers, nursing interventions for asthma, and all the medications used to treat asthma, which are bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory medications.
What is asthma? Asthma is a chronic lung disease (no cure) that causes narrowing and inflammation of the airways (bronchi and bronchioles) that leads to difficulty breathing.
    🟣ABG eBook: registerednursern.creator-spr...
🟣ABG physical book: amzn.to/3EsF0Mc (affiliate link)
How does it happen? Normally, when you breathe in air, it travels down through your upper airway to your lower airway, which includes the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli (where gas exchanges happens). The oxygen you breathe in crosses over into your blood stream, and the carbon dioxide in your blood crosses over into the airway to be exhaled.
In patients with asthma, the bronchi and bronchioles are chronically inflamed and can become so inflamed that it leads to an asthma attack (wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, coughing), which is usually due to a trigger of some type.
Asthma triggers include: -Environment: smoke, pollen, pollution, perfumes, dander, dust mites, pests (cockroaches), cold and dry air, mold -Body Issue: respiratory infection, GERD, hormonal shifts, exercise-induced -Intake of Certain Substances: drugs (beta adrenergic blockers that are nonselective), NSAIDS, aspirin, preservatives (sulfites)
Signs and Symptoms of an asthma attack include: chest tightness, wheezing (auscultate…expiratory wheezing and can progress to inspiratory wheezes in severe cases), coughing, difficulty breathing (***especially exhaling), increased respiratory rate
Asthma treatment includes: bronchodilators (beta-agonists, anticholinergics, theophylline along with anti-inflammatories (corticosteroids, leukotriene modifiers, immunomodulators, cromolyn).

Sarah, you are hands down the reason why I have been doing so well in nursing school. I have learned so much more from you than from any of my lectures! You explain things in such an easy way to understand! I just wanted to say thank you so so much for all of your videos. You really were born to be a teacher and a nurse! I am a semester and a half from graduating and you are a huge reason I even got this far.

The fact that nurse Sara got through nursing school without her own nurse Sara to watch is insane and boy am I lucky to live In a time where someone just makes everything so easy to comprehend and understand. I have so much respect for you and your channel. I aspire to be a great nurse like you one day.

Hi Sarah, just want to say thank you soooo much for the wonderful teaching! You really put EVERYTHING a nursing student need to know together, from A&P, patho, nursing interventions, even those REAL wheezing sounds in the lecture. WOW! You are absolutely amazing! You saved my tons of time to read from book to book whereas still get lot in books. I love your structural notes and vivid drawing. Every thing just makes so much more sense to me. I have learnt 10* times more than sitting in a 4-hour lecture. Thanks a ton!!

Hello Yolanda :) THANK YOU so much for both of the comments you left on this video and the cirrhosis video. They were so kind, and it is so nice to hear these videos are helping. You have no idea how much that means to me. I'm so happy to hear that you went from struggling in class to being an A student now. Wow, that is so AWESOME! Congrats to you! I'm honored to help. I wish you the best with your journey and thanks for taking me along with you :)

I want to thank you also because my confidence is greatly boosted. I used to be overwhelmed by the textbooks whereas still still struggled at not being able to put things together before the exam (NO life prior to the exam day) Now I have the confidence to not only pass the exam but do well AND I can have time to do grocery shopping and play with my one-year-old son a bit. So I mean I can live a normal life instead of feeling scared and hopeless. That means so much to me!! Btw, can you please make more videos on maternity/newborn (pathophysiology, nursing interventions, just like this asthma video) other than what is on your channel? Thanks again! :)

You are a great presenter and I wish more nurses were like you. I’ve dealt with so many undesirable souls that trivialize asthma. I can tell you have a passion for the betterment of a patient’s condition and that is nice!! I think it would be a benefit for nurses or other healthcare professionals in contact with patients that while learning about asthma COPD other similar should have the ability to experience shortness of breath in a controlled test of course. I think they would have a greater understanding of the severity of this real condition. Sugar-free candy if aspartame, can cars palpitations and many people. If a patient is using saba more than 2x week plus 2x daily prior to exercise. Big Pharma needs to release allergic Asthma vaccination

Just a wonderful presentation Sarah! I've had Asthma since age 28 (I'm 70), and have gone through what you spoke about.
Quite scary as you said. I always recommend your videos to my support groups, in this case my Asthma group. The Pulmonologist I see has never mentioned an Action Plan and that's disturbing to me. Sometimes I use Guaifenesin to thin out excess mucus. I have mitral valve prolapse and the bronchodilators wreak havoc with blood pressure and HR. God bless.

Hello Tony :) Thank you so much for watching the video as always and for recommending my videos to your support groups. I REALLY appreciate that. Asthma is definitely no fun and those actions plans really do help. I would definitely talk to him/her about an action plan if your asthma is not controlled well along with using the peak flow meter device. Thank you for your feedback!

libs hurtada I wish the nurses and " hospitalist" had watched this video. Just got out of IU Arnet Hospital. Went to ER Tuesday not able to breathe. They poked me , X-ray my lungs, CT scan , the so called head doctor didn't do a lung function test. No peak flow test. I demanded to go home after 3 days in the torture chamber , called a hospital. Also, my arms are full of dark purple bruises from the needle sticks. Yet the doctor diagnosed me with COPD!
