Hi Dereck, if you want even more emotion, I strongly advise you to listen to « un enfant assis attend la pluie » « a child sitting down waiting for the rain". I am French-speaking and I can affirm that the original version of Balavoine is more intense than the copy of Dimash because the words are better expressed and they are also pronounced with a lot more sensitivity that go with it.
Ok Dimash is a very good singer but her cover is just a vocal performance which only impresses non-French speakers.
Dimash has greatly improved his personal vocal technique for several years, while Daniel Balavoine sings with his natural and special voice that he has always had ...

      Same for me.
I'm from Quebec, Canada and Daniel Balavoine did the best version for me with the one by Bruno Pelletier (Mogador 1993-1994). I hear once that Pelletier was the the first one after the splendid Balavoine who can do the song like him, hitting all the high notes night after night. I think his rendition is as well beautiful and very emotional.
If you want to hear it, this the only live (almost) full version and not too badly record I found : ruclips.net/video/i76JmUPSCZo/видео.html&ab_channel=zouszousmoun

For me, the two most beautiful interpretations of this song are those of Balavoine, obviously, but also and especially that of Grégory Lemarchal during his time at the Star Académy.
Tears always overwhelm me when interpreting Grégory. Still, I didn't watch this show and wasn't particularly a fan of him. But it's really powerful what he does with it.
To know also, for the anecdote, that Grégory, carrier of the cystic fibrosis, had literally stunned his comrades for this song, because a few seconds before entering on stage, he was taken by a coughing fit and was in the process of to shout. The fact that he has no more breath and manages to take it back just when entering the stage is bluffing!

If I remember well, in that part of the opera-rock, his girlfriend was just assassinated, he explains he was never meant for this world, he doesn't feel at ease here, he didn't get lucky in the "world's lottery". He just wants to escape (like a bird/ talk of metamorphosis), doesn't want to accept the routine (work sleep, repeat).
    The part you don't get:
I never had my feet on the ground/
    I would rather be a bird/
I don't feel comfortable in my own skin/

Daniel Balavoine is a legend here in France. And this song here is one of the many reasons why.
He wasn't just singing his songs, he lived them. He really sung with his soul and heart.
That is why the cover by Dimash will never come close to this. He's ridiculously good with his voice, but at the end of the day, it's just a performance. An extraordinary one, but this song in particular is something else.

Best title translation I've seen: S.O.S. from an Earthling in Distress. Starmania is where Balavoine was discovered. Starmania was an enormous success when it came out in 1978. It's full of exceptional songs. Several songs are still known (SOS is one, but a couple of other songs are Le Monde est Stone (Cindy Lauper sang it in English); Le Blues du Businessman (Celine Dion sings it) ). "Besoin d'Amour" was France Gall's big success out of this Rock Opera. Personally, I love Balavoine singing Banlieue Nord and Quand on Arrive en Ville. But seriously, there are so many excellent songs in this show, it's really hard to choose one. You can familiarize yourself with it by listening to the original cast. It's unlikely you'll find many videos from that time so you're safe just listening to get familiar with it. A new version of Starmania was supposed to hit the stage in Paris in November 2021. It's been postponed, but hopefully it will happen in 2022 :-) Enjoy!

    • @martine2u
      @martine2u 3 года назад

BTW, if you watch Starmania, I recommend watching the 1989 version (here is one with subtitles so you get the meaning: ruclips.net/video/VKF_SqeKTYo/видео.html ). I guarantee you will be SHOCKED by what's in the plot, particularly how a successful business man becomes the president of the western world. Remember this was written in 1976. Starmania was completely visionary. A lot of the intrigue has actually come to pass. I can't wait to see how they update it in 2022...

    • @Meanne77

Oh, I didn't know a new version of Starmania was in the work! I was lucky enough to see the 3rd rendition of it (1994 I think?) at the Mogador theatre, probably why I love this version equally with the original one :)
To add a bit background information for @DereckReacts and the people not familiar with the musical, Starmania was adapted in English under the title "Tycoon" and this specific song, under the title "Only the very best".
As for the story behind the song, the character Daniel was playing just lost the love of his life who died in his arms - which is why he says he's rather "be a bird". After finally meeting the person who understood him and completed him only to loose her soon after, he doesn't want to live on this planet anymore. I'm glad you were able to feel his sadness and despair in his voice even without understanding the lyrics (and the translation you had sure is wonky).

Hello Dereck and thank you for your particular interest in French music.
The original version of the rock opera Starmania sung by Balavoine deeply moves the viewer.
His voice and the intensity he puts into his interpretation is unique.
The English version "only the very best" by Peter Kingsbery does not equal it.
However, if you have not already listened to it, I invite you to listen to the version of the singer Grégory Lemarchal whose interpretation is overwhelming.
Beyond the music itself and the too short career of this singer who died of cystic fibrosis, this version is even more charged with emotion ...
A song cut out for him and for his voice where you can feel all his thirst for life despite illness.
Try this version if you don't already know it and if you are curious, find out about the tragic trajectories of these two singers, Balavoine and Lemarchal because ironically, both died too early.

Daniel Balavoine always makes me cry. I was 12 when he passed away and i had been raised listening to his music. His voice was incredible but he also was a great character ! His death, so young, was a real tragedy. He was so concerned by the misery of our world. He was still a young singer when he came to the TV news and tell what he thought, to the president of the republic Francois Mitterand, face to face, about French youth. After that he got engaged in many projects against hunger and lack of water in Africa. He also was very implicated in the fight against racism.
He, Michel Berger and Jean-Jacques Goldman were very good friends.
Just after Daniel Balavoine passed away, Jean-Jacques Goldman was invited in a TV show to sing his current song but as he knew his friend was dead, he decided not to sing this song. He sang a song, titled "Confidentiel" that wasn't meant to be a single but it was a wonderful tribute to his friend. @@emmanuelernandez7067 maybe you got a point with Brel but I still think he’ll be avle to appreciate the performance. And for Aznavour I mean come on he’s gonna flip out

Drop! Dereck likes 80's and 90's and a little 70's but before it's dead! They aren't singers made for him! Don't waste your time!

So glad Derek you promote this giant of French music. He was the best in my opinion at his time - and even now. His sudden death in January '86 has been a huge shock to me. He remains the best and he truly deserves your promotion. By the way, you're doing it great!

Hey man you should react to the same song by Gregory Le Marchal. He had Cystic fibrosis, was told he could never sing but did it anyways with a breathtaking voice. He sadly passed away and was very young. But he died having made his biggest dream come true

I've been binge watching you discovering French classics... And I wish I could listen to it for the very first time again too. I've grown up with it being old hits and it was pretty normal to respect it and love it, but I think I would love them more and listen to so many different details than I do today. Thank you !

Indeed, the musical helpt his carrer a lot! This songe was in 1979 and his first great solo succes was about the same time with "le Chanteur " 1980. This musical is full of great succes here in France !

The whole Starmania rock opera is legendary in the French speaking world. France-Quebec coproduction, goes back to 1977 but it could have been written last week... Every character is depressed in their own way but still reaching for whatever light they can find... (re. this song, try the Bruno Pelletier version.) known the whole score by heart for more than 20 years now. Had at least threes recorded official versions. Another rabbit whole for you, sir!
