To give some insight on a verse of the song: he sings "Ce soir la femme du torrero dormira sur ses deux oreilles". In French, as you may know, "dormir sur ses deux oreilles" means to have a really good sleep. But he uses this expression to refer to the barbaric tradition in which the torrero cuts the bulls ears' off at the end of the fight, while he's still alive, to take them as a trophy.
Il y égalementi un non-dit grivois, car outre les deux oreilles la queue est aussi coupée, donc la femme du torero dormira sur ses deux oreilles car la queue du torero ne sera pas là pour la tenir éveillée.
C'est sans doute la cinquantième fois que j'écoute cette chanson et pourtant je verse une larme quasi à chaque fois: le fait que ça soit dans ma langue maternelle et que le narrateur soit le taureau, ça me bouleverse profondément. It's probably the fiftieth time I've listened to this song, and yet I shed a tear almost every time: the fact that it's in my native language and that the narrator is the bull moves me deeply.
Everybody likes this guy too here ! Francis Cabrel is a classic in France ! When I was a child my father introduced me to this singer on the radio. Wonderful ! He is a poet and a person of integrity 🙏🏻
Malgré les pétitions, malgré les demandes, malgré les années, la corrida continue encore et toujours. Cette chanson résume tout ce que j'en pense, et me rend infiniment triste à chaque fois que je l'écoute. Parce qu'elle me rappelle à quel point l'homme peut être cruel, juste par plaisir.
Francis Cabrel said that during the recording of this song, the sound engineer (who had a rocker look) ended in tears because this song is so sad and makes us realize that bullfights are so cruel. sorry for my english.
I wish the translation were more accurate and reflected Francis Cabrel’s use of french language, there’s a pun with « la femme du torero dormira sur ses deux oreilles »: when the torero wins the bullfight, sometimes he’s allowed to cut the bull’s ears and to keep it as a trophy. When someone quietly sleeps, there’s a french turn of phrase saying « he/she is sleeping on both ears » see what I mean ? the bull here would like to win, cut the torero’s ears and give it to his wife so she could feel what that cruelty really means, probably the most powerfull verse of that song.
Unfortunately the translations are often bad... However I interpret the original sentence differently: the bullfighter's wife can sleep serenely on her two ears without worrying about those of the bull which were mutilated.
You're right but, when translating a song you have to follow the music, no time for long explanations such as this one. Translating from a language to another is not only mechanically replacing words with others.
@@jfrancobelge Yes, it’s obvious that translation and explanations are two very different things. Here in our comments (there is another elsewhere) we discuss among ourselves the interpretation we give to the original sentence, in French, because not everyone understands it the same. I was a little hasty in mentioning the bad translations because yes that is not the case here, it could not be better. But I still see a lot of bad translations. Apart from special expressions or untranslatable puns, there are very simple vocabulary errors, but also errors of meaning. The translator doesn't know enough French to understand the true meaning of the sentence, so he writes what he understood and it doesn't match. Well, they do what they can, I would certainly do less well 😌

Do you know what's the stupidest thing about bullfighting in France? French law punishes animal cruelty with 3 years in prison, and if the animal dies 5 years in prison. Except... in a region (the one near Spain). This means that by torturing a bull to death you can be either a hero or a criminal a few kilometers away. Vive la France !
I just don't understand why bullfights are allowed in that part of France along the Spanish border. Some say it's to preserve traditions. But do we have to preserve bad and crual traditions? If so, we'd still burn women as witches and watch gladiators fight to death. This is even more insane if you think that a good chunk of Spain neighboring southwestern France is Catalonia, where they've banned bullfights. But is Catalonia really Spain? That's another (political) issue that I'll let others debate.
parce que la France respecte les traditions des différentes régions qui la compose, bien ou pas c est a discuter mais certaines mentalités sont à des années lumieres les unes des autres, on parle des massacre de dauphins en islande ou des asiatiques qui maltraitent chiens et chats avant de les bouffer, les Musulmans qui égorgent des centaines de moutons dans les rues pour leur fetes religieuses ?

Other from Francis Cabrel : Petite Marie / Je l'aime à mourir / Encore et encore / Sarbacane / La cabane du pêcheur / ... A great poet and musician... quite underrated, even in France.
I saw bullfighting once in Southern France, I was 12 and my parents took me with them (!). I threw up. The tradition goes back to the Mithraic religion in the Roman Empire. A bull was sacrificed during their rituals. Another thing: the lancer (picador) horses. They wear protective gear, except on their belly. Quite often, the bull is strong enough to bring the horse down and eviscerate it.
That song and lyrics gave me chills. A tear wanted to drop from one of my eye. I think VO mean original version. Maybe a famous cover exist somewhere. IDK.
You must continue your reactions to Francis Cabrel. He is one of the great contemporary French composer and singer. There is so much to choose from as his repertoire is quite impressive.
En plus ils avancent l’excuse de la tradition. Alors que c’est une tradition purement espagnole et que eux comment à l’interdire, comme en Catalogne par exemple. Est-ce que ce monde est sérieux ? 😢
@@antibash691 Le monde est de plus en plus sérieux puisque les pays d'Amérique latine aussi abolissent la corrida l'un après l'autre, mais la France n'est pas sérieuse, toujours aussi conne 😐

The southern French accent with the Gipsy Spanish finish make the sens of this song even stronger, you know it's a sad tradition that some southern place in France keep maintening, same arround the border between Spain and France.
I'm surprised you never heard those words Corrida/torrero those are spanish but basically, all was in the song title. VO simply means Version Originale, but here, it's non sense, there isnt several versions, I think that would just mean there is english subtitles ? France use a lot the dubbed french language, but lots prefer the english with french subtitles, or so called VF, VO, and VOST. But you're right we call "Veau" the cow's baby, but it's not the same. Corrida is from spain but is also a thing in south of france, for historical reasons they are kinda protected but lots hate and fight them, probably more in France that Spain. Francis Cabrel was already aged when he wrote this masterpiece, his first succes were from the 80s. Corrida was highly discussed in france, basicaly it's forbidden except for some south town, because cruaulty is against french rules, but it's so old they kept it there for "cultural exception"

VO stand for Version Originale. Then VO for a French song means the song is in French, VO for a movie means the movie has not been post synchronised into another language.
04:21 That line "La femme du torero dormira sur ses deux oreilles." is amazing. It means two things, the expression "dormir sur les deux oreilles" (sleeping on both ears) meaning sleeping well and the fact that after killing the bull, they cut the ear as a trophy
Thank you so much. This song make me cry, Always... Fortunatly in my area in south est of France, bullfight are less and less attractive. Hope this will be forbiden as soon as possible.
the Portuguese have a similar game but they do not kill the bull - no spears, no swords, they just taunt the bull and run for their life. a very acrobatic sport. with nobody killed unless accidental.
The two songs proposed at the end of the video (L'aigle noir & Les cactus) are very good, very different from each other, but you should listen to them, Cabrel has made many other very beautiful songs like (Petite Marie, Je t'aimais je t'aime et je t'aimerai, La cabane du pêcheur,....)
So the translation is understandably missing a double entendre when Francis Cabrel sings: "ce soir, la femme du torero dormira sur ses deux oreilles" translated correctly as: "tonight the torero's wife will sleep soundly". The double entendre is in the French expression "dormir sur ses deux oreilles" which literally translates as "sleeping on your two ears" which in this song refers ironically to the Spanish tradition of La Corrida where at the end of the bull fight, when the bull is vanquished, the ears and tail of the bull are severed to be offered to the matadors. So what Francis Cabrel really means is "unlike me - the bull - the torero's wife will sleep on her two ears both literally and figuratively because her husband will be alive and I won't be after he collects my ears".
la plus belle chanson contre cette barbarie humaine 🥰
To give some insight on a verse of the song: he sings "Ce soir la femme du torrero dormira sur ses deux oreilles".
In French, as you may know, "dormir sur ses deux oreilles" means to have a really good sleep.

If one of these towns stops doing bullfighting for just one year it will lose the term of "tradition" and will have to stop
Anti-bullfighting is also an uninterrupted tradition in the south of France since the 19th century. So they should respect this tradition !

Veau is calf. VO is original version (version originale).
VO means Version Originale "Original Soundtrack".
❤ superbe chanson sur cette honte de Corrida 😔
'VO' in the video title means 'Version Originale', so the original soundtrack (in french)
And watch this, most moving stuff!! ❤
Every time I listen to this song, I have tears in my eyes.
You are smart, great reaction. I love Francis Cabrel, he's an amazing song writer and interpret
5:55 you managed to make me laugh at the saddest line for me 😂

Un des chanteurs français les plus populaire.
Un gars du sud-ouest.
Il a l'accent.
the Portuguese have a similar game but they do not kill the bull - no spears, no swords, they just taunt the bull and run for their life. a very acrobatic sport. with nobody killed unless accidental.
Francis Cabrel is the goat! 🐐🔥
I mean, in this one he was a bull ^^
Je ne comprends pas 🤔
@@Brigitte-myo Goat = Greatest of All Time 😂
Ok merci ,
je suis une quiche 😊
Cabrel : j adore
La chanson, contre la corrida : très émouvante @@jonathanratel3150
