In France, this song is extremely well-known and often brings tears to the eyes of almost everyone who listens to it. The music is by Jean Ferrat, one of our greatest singers. The lyrics, with their incredible power, capture the essence of the Parisian suburbs of the 1960s and 1970s.

There's a little controversy around that song, Michelle Senlis wrote it for her dad, the music is from Jean Ferrat, and two singers had sing it. But in 1963, two years after she wrote the song, her dad died, so she asked to stop using that song.
In 1973, she agreed to let Daniel Guichard sing it and to rewrite it a little, but according to her, he changed some lyrics without her approval, and now that this version is super famous, she deeply regret it.

The fact is… he had to stop singing because he came in massive, and unjustified problems with the tax government office. He tried to prove himself innocent of the charges put against him, but in France you first have to pay then file a recourse. He could never pay and was prosecuted, was in a legal battle for 20 or 30 years, it cost him his career. All because one tax office employee did not want to admit she made a mistake.

He let me watch when he was donating blood. On the summer I worked hard at a factory as a summer job, he even said "I'm proud of you, my son". He took me to his political activities. Everyday I wish I had spent more time with him when I could. And we did not have Tv in my family until 1971 or 1972, it was too expensive . Books were valued.

Daniel Guichard was born in 1948, and this song tells the memories of his father, his old (colloquial language) ! I am 62 years old and today still young people, of whom my son speaks about their vieux, and often with respect... 50 years later, this song still shakes our guts and brings back lots of memories about ourvieux, who has been gone for more or less a long time !!!

yes in france we have some sort of "causual" speech and when we said " mon vieu" we are speaking of our father, we CAN say " ma vieille" for our mother too but use it less we mostly said "ma mère" we too have some " familliar" way to speak of these too "maman" for mother (you can translate it in " mommy" in english) and "papa" for the father ( you can translate it as " daddy")! for exemple if we said "mon vieu est revenu de l'hospital hier!" you can translate it as " my old man came back from the hospital yesterday!"

We children often talk about the special relationship we have with our mother, but this song reminds us that although the relationship with our father is often less close than that with our mother, we must not forget that the father was the pillar of the family. We often have to wait until his death to express all the love we had for him and that we forgot to show him when he was alive.

    Hi,
When you heard the phrase "there was no TV in our house", you asked yourself: why are you Jewish?"
No, that has nothing to do with it.
In France, televisions came very late to modest homes.
The French began to be interested in television at the time of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II of England.
The French were in number in front of the TV sales stores to watch this coronation. I saw videos and it was impressive.
France at the time was a country largely made up of workers and peasants.
I come from this environment and I am very proud of it!
In addition, TVs were extremely expensive.
At my parents' house, the first TV arrived when I was twelve (I was born in 1959) and it was a second-hand TV.
It took many years to be able to have a new color TV.
I think my family wasn't the only one.
And Daniel Guichard's family was simply not rich

@@itnow It's true that when the family wanted to watch a TV show they had to go to a relative's house.
I remember that my parents and I went from time to time to my father's friend's house to watch TV and I remember a soap opera that scared me: BELFEGOR.
And I was going to take refuge under the table.
Today that has changed a lot because I love science fiction and “horror” films.

Don't worry, I will translate further.
Merci.
Actuelly, i'm not gonna translate this. "Beauf" means some how "red neck". I just say that Daniel Guichard as been treated like a "has-been" (we use this expression in french) for many years in our country. He travel in mobile-home, enjoy simple things (where have they gone ?) so... he never been considered like how he always been : a good guy.
