INCREDIBLE video.... absolutely astonishingly beautiful... WOW. You don't realize how graceful and fluid their movements are until you see them up close under the water... like giant mermaids!
Holy moly cow 🐄 this is incredible.. I love this.. I was surfing on the pacific side of Baja California and I got to experience this 50 yards away.. I lost my mind 😅
Great experience! I have seen all of the videos of SV Curiosity that were shot at Tonga when swimming with the whales. The humpbacks seem to favor squid for food for which they dive up to 3000 meters. Like to follow you too!
Your experience was so much better than mine. We had a substitute captain who had trouble with the engines. That delayed us just long enough that we were the last boat out, so we got the worst spot. With that said, I did get a face to face with a whale for a brief moment. They have really big eyes. I think it's a combination of the three things: they splash to get rid of growth, for fun, and for their share of the profits :) Just a tip: In Tonga it is considered very rude to show skin. It's the same in a lot of places you will travel to from here on out going west.
Hi Franklin. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am happy for you that you did see a whale up close. And the reasons for breaching are interesting, aren't they? About showing skin in Tonga I know. I was properly dressed when going into church or walking into town for that reason. I loved it there by the way, such a nice place with locals and sailorcommunity.
Whales breach in the vicinity of boats to communicate with others in their pod and others far, far away. Sound travels 5 times faster in water than in air but boats interfere with the normal whale song they use to communicate. Engines, generators, propellors, sonar, etc. The loud slap of a breach overcomes that interference and lets other whales know, " Boats here, watch out for harpoons ". Whales can hear songs from 500kms distance as the water carries it around the world, without disruption. Some songs can be up to half an hour long. Free Captain Paul Watson !
A little English grammar help here... lol... "they don't know just (as in precisely) why they do it" is correct. if you say "they know just (only) know why they do it... then the meaning is that "they know why they do it, and they also know...." make sense? I am surely learning far more from you than I could possibly offer to the conversation but thought you might appreciate this little hint!
