This is far and away the best video I have ever seen on making a hard dodger. Really helpful and will use this technique when I make mine! Great stuff. Thanks 🙏
I had a 35’sailboat with the same kind of dodger , the dodger you made is one of the best looking I have seen in years ! It looks beautiful fits the boat perfectly, most DIY dodgers are square or look like some types of growth ! The only thing I would have changed was to make it a bit longer into the cockpit for more weather protection! Your a Genius !
Nice to see someone work with pride and attention to detail. Personally I don’t like to attach windows that way but was done correct. Keep up the good work. Congratulations 🍾🎉🎊🎈
Very well done. I haven’t worked with vinyl resin for years now, everything is now epoxy for me. Hardly ever see anyone on here that knows what he is doing. 👍
Very nice method of construction! Been thinking of making one for my boat and so far planned on using a foam core, but I like the way you’ve done it. Might replicate to a certain degree what you’ve done. Thanks for sharing!
Richard, that's an impressive dodger - congratulations to you - and equally impressive amount of patience. A good life lesson for us impatient types. Found your channel because of this video but have subscribed because of your promise to tackle refurb projects on your Bavaria and share them with others. Thank you very much for creating this channel.
I hate it ! But only because I'm jealous. You just added 5k to the value of your boat. Comfort level increase is immesurable. You're one smart cookie !
The cost of replacing dodgers is becoming very expensive nowadays , So glad you did the clear fill in at the top & Not silly leaving the pipe work in now clears around the sides & aft & youv got the best cabin in the bay . Well done .
Bravo super boulot je suis en train de réfléchir pour faire une casquette en nidaplast pour mon bateau hors bord pour après mettre un panneau solaire dessus je m.abonne 👍🍻JP du Var
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to produce and post it. Can you provide info re: the type of resin you used? Also, is the flange screwed or thru-bolted to the deck (I'm guessing it's screwed) and did you use any sealant/adhesive (5200) at the flange? Thanks again.
I used 2 x 800 double biaxile . laminate total thickness is about 1.6mm so it is quite flexable. additional laminate was added over the frame , deck bonding edges, window cutout edges to strengthen and build up those area to 4mm thickness.
By far the best looking dodger I've seen. I'm thinking about duplicating your process for my boat. Do you feel it's strong enough to take a beating offshore sailing? Would you do it again the same way?
Richard, thanks a lot. Extremely nice looking. And strong? You mention you can stand on it? And what was the weight of it approx.? I want to make one for our boat here in Norway. As a newbie, do you think I can make it in a fall? The temperature can also drop to zero before December. Thanks a lot again! 🤩❤️
I can stand on the corners where the tubes are. The middle area is thin about 2 mm, so not possible to stand on. The ideal temperature for fiberglass work is about 18 degrees.
Nice idea. Looks good. Could do with a lot less chat and more action (maybe 4xspeed) of you on the tools. More detail on cutting windows and marking them out. Thanks .
Very, Very nice! What is the weight of the cloth? What is the type of cloth? Epoxy or polyester resin? I've been contemplating a build like this and just need this info from you because it appears that the overall weight and stability of your project is good! Kudos to you and thank you for sharing this!!! Douglas Kyllo
@SalingRebelStar nice project and video! Well executed! After completion, do you feel you needed to keep the stainless tubes? Also, do you have an idea of the total weight vs the standard sunbrella?
still need to keep the tubes as they add alot of bracing and i can stand where the tubes are to get at the end of the boom. total increase in weight = 25 kg
@@SailingRebelStar wow thats 800 gram...looked like 300 or less... I've only ever used choppstrand...400 gram and thats heavy to use.... Yours looked very light when you rolled it out.??
main laminate was 2 layers 800 biaxile with additional layers of CSM around the window cutouts and deck edge for increased thickness. Normal isophalic polyester resin
With the sunbrella in position I laid the plastic sheet over the bimini and marked the top panel, then laid another plastic sheet around the front window panel and marked the deck edge and top corner.
I wouldn't go teaching people how to add heavy structure that high above the waterline. If I add a dodger, it will go together with a sewing machine and pinking shears.
Fibreglass is light and strong, most of the weight is across the centreline and fairly low on a keel yacht. Can't see it having any significant detrimental effect.

Awesome, thank you!
Very nice work. You should be proud. It looks like it came from the factory that way.

Great Dodger good sir. Thanks for sharing how you did that.
Any time! you are welcome
One of the best hard doger projects Ive seen. Very well may follow your lead. Thank you for posting this video.
Glad you liked it! give it ago !
I’m very impressed by that
Really looking great. My dodger needs replacing with new canvas but I might just do what you did.
Very enjoyable video thank you. The result is very sleek compared to some of the boxy plywood dodgers I’ve seen before
Keeping the same shape helps to keep the nice lines of the boat. glad you liked the video
Nice to see someone work with pride and attention to detail.

Very nice dodger! Best design that I've seen that looks like a canvas dodger and you did a brilliant job.

What a SPECTACULAR OUTCOME.
Look forward to your next project.
Have a look at our playlists i am sure you will find another interesting project.
Thanks for the video! You got a great result! It looks harmonious on the boat and the durability is good.
Absolutely magnificent congratulations it’s beautiful that’s what I’ve been looking for
That was excellent. I was wondering how you were going to do it.
Fiberglass boat builder her in Iceland told my to do new sprayhood exatly as you did it, excellent job on that project!
Brilliant!! Best dodger build ever !!! Looks great too!!
Well done sir !
Fair winds⛵️
Excellent project, makes our efforts at cleaning up an old dodger look tame.
love the work I thought of doing it in my boat, the center window you can probably add a hinge to open it
Thanks, I did look at hinging the center widow, unfortunately the main sheet system is in the way... maybe removable
Excellent job, many thanks. I've been wanting to do this to my Pearson, now I might just go for it!
Go for it!
Excellent job. Never seen that technique. Thanks
I am wooden boat ovner , but to your project I have to say , well done !!!!!

Thanks !

Excelente trabajo. Aunque yo pintaría toda esa tornilleria de blanco para que pasara desapercibida. El trabajo ha sido magistral.
Thanks Gracias, mi esposa me ha pedido que haga precisamente eso.
Thanks, my wife would like to see the bolts painted white.
Been thinking about doing the same.
You did a very good job here ✌️
Go for it, most of the work is in the sanding and painting.
Beautiful work! Congrats!!
wow awesome job looks fantastic
fantastic top marks a very well done to you

Thanks 👍 having the cockpit usable in any weather will be fantastic
Soon to be on my to do list! Thank you!
Job well done 🎉
Great job! The only thing I might have done differently is to completely eliminate the metal and replace it with fiiberglass supports.
We did a good job 😎
Great job! Gave me alot of ideas. Cheers!
Glad I could help!
Omg this is amazing!!!!
Nice work!
AMAZING job, and CHIQUE design...!!!
Thank you! Cheers! If I painted the dodger with a color, from a distance it would look like a fabric dodger.
Superb job
Absolutely brilliant! ✨👌😃
Great work. Inspiration... I would glue the "plexyglass" instead.
Best sullution 🎉
Nice job!
Fabulous job!
Great job. I just wish you had shown the process in more detail
great job my friend !!!!

Bravo sir!
Fantastic video, thanks very much for sharing! I would love to replace the sunbrella on my boat with grp. Did you also film the hard bimini build?
Yes I did, see the video " Solar Hardtop" ruclips.net/video/Rm0CsO183VA/видео.html
Awesome Bro
Kick ass !
Beautiful
Great job, have inspired me to get on and do mine!
What weight fibreglass cloth did you use to keep it so flexible initially?

Our Bavaria 44 is a 2002 .

Just like Theros, did it contribute to the tragedy? What happens when a wave hits that?
What are the actual benefits of having a glasfiber sprayhood/Dodger?
They don't wear out.
What cloth was used and polyester resin?
main laminate was 2 layers 800 biaxile with additional layers of CSM around the window cutouts and deck edge for increased thickness. Normal isophalic polyester resin
What was the fibreglass you used ?
@@markgrinter3228 eglass 800g/sqm double bias
So you used the sunbrella for a pattern then used 1708 biaxel glass?
With the sunbrella in position I laid the plastic sheet over the bimini and marked the top panel, then laid another plastic sheet around the front window panel and marked the deck edge and top corner.
in metric the main laminate was 2x 800 Biaxile plus extra laminate around the window cutouts, deck edge and over the stainless tubes.
Couple of small flexible solar panels could go on there.
Looks great. But i feel its to flimsy and blocks the view. For something so important, i would go shopping for another boat.
