Chasing Ridgelines: A High Country Mule Deer Hunting Film

- Successful backcountry hunting is not always measured by the size of the rack. The experience, the journey, the process and the lifestyle are as important to serious backcountry hunters as shooting a trophy animal. In this film we explore what is truly important about hunting big game in the backcountry, the connection between hunters and wild places, and how harvest is the goal, but not the end game.
The film documents the process, and lifestyle of two hard-core backcountry, do-it-yourself big game hunters in Idaho. The film features two brothers in Idaho that spend the year, not just hunting season, plotting their big game adventures. In this film our characters are in pursuit of big mule deer bucks in Idaho’s backcountry, but the film also focuses on the experience of hunting in the backcountry, the importance and grandeur of the places we hunt, and why the journey is as important as a successful harvest. As the film follows the stories of these brothers and their connections to each other, to hunting and the land, it uncovers the value of unspoiled backcountry and how the experience and the adventure is as important as pulling the trigger.

As an avid hiker and backpacker who has never hunted this looks incredible. A convergence of so many disciplines into an activity that humans have relied upon for thousands of years. Great video!

Also you and your brother remind me so much of my brother and I! Definitely awesome relationship you two have. It's rare. Treasure it. I almost lost my brother in a bad car accident out shed hunting and it made me appreciate him that much more.... Thinking I may never have my best friend to go hammm in the mountains with again. Glad to say he is all better and we are tearing it up as much as ever.

Pro tip, move over to a Warbonnet hammock setup. The hammock allows for more location options for a camp on the steep side hill country.

It's a good idea. Ror me, I just can't get any sleep in a hammock unfortunately.
Argali It took me a little bit to get used to the hammock too. The asymmetrical design of the Warbonnet helps a bunch though as you lay across it diagonally which makes it a pretty flat space to lay. Next pro tip...Sawyer mini filter...huge space and weight saver.

Tim, It varied depending on the location we were shooting, but anywhere from 5-10 miles.

From one filmer to another...beautiful work. All the angles, commentary, it was stunning. What camera did you guys use?
Jrake Outdoors Chasing Ridgelines was shot on three different cameras: the Sony A7s with Atomos Shogun recorder, Sony RX10 Mark II, and a little on the Canon 5D Mark III using the Raw Magic Lantern hack. And I think we used a go pro somewhere in there.
One of the best hunting films i've ever seen. Simply awesome! Was that a Vortex Razor 50mm spotter? Thinking about that one for my first backcountry hunt.

Christian Noren we used a variety of cameras. A few DSLR Sony camera’s, and a go-pro were our main tools.
Hey guys what packs do you like for living out of on a back country mule deer hunt for 3-4 days?
Sean, we've used many different packs, but the seek outside goshhawk or Peregrine and/or the mystery ranch Metcalf are perfect for that length of trip.

Hey Patrick, we've probably used it all over the years. Mystery ranch, seek outside, exo, etc. Right now we are using Exo packs and like them.

Just found your great video. It was well done, but you need to work on your flinch when shooting. Curtis's head was off the gun before he even pulled the trigger.
True! And believe us, he is fully aware of his flinch.
Excellent video but you barely show the one buck that you got.....so that was a bit disappointing.

Video starts out good, great scenery, but than no kill shot footage, I guess your making this video for the Portland folks, anyway I stopped watching immediately, folks you want to see something check out the modern day mountain man!
