  • Harvest Moon is an incredible backcountry hunting film featuring friends Andrew Jakovac and Brad Brooks as they look for giant mule deer bucks in the remote wilderness of the Rocky Mountains.
Harvest Moon takes hunters through the highs and lows of archery hunting using spot and stalk techniques for one of the hardest animals to kill with a bow in the west.
Harvest Moon explores the value and importance of wild places to archery hunting mule deer and big game, and along the way Andrew and Brad overcome adversity to and heartbreak to find success on this struggle-fest of a hunt.

Wow. Another nice video. The second I've watched this morning (it's raining here).
Absolutely gorgeous country and the photography was well done. This is the first video I've watched where the sound of the wind came across as the sound of the wind. Very nicely done. And like the fact music was minimal. I've seldom heard heard music that truly reflects the beauty of that kind of country and wildlife so minimal or none is what I prefer.
And an ethical hunt as well. Hard to beat that.
I'm going to say something that may seem controversial. That tag looks like a Wyoming tag. There, crossbows are legal. I hunt with both vertical and crossbows and when I have the opportunity will always chose the xbow. Because the higher kinetic energy, especially at the range you guys were shooting, you're increasing your odds of a humane quick kill. Not more kills, just quicker and more humane kills. And fewer lost deer. Not a criticism of your hunt just something to think about.

Raven Feather thank you for the comment and your point is well taken. Something about the stick and string will always be appealing.

Thanks for a good video. The "stick and string" is appealing and will always be appealing. But the compound bows we use today are a lot more than sticks and string. Some people consider it a traditional method but they're a far cry from the Necedah recurve I started with many years ago.
My story is I started spending a lot of time archery hunting about 10 years ago. Then and now beginning to hunt deer (whitetail and mule deer) usually around the 1st of September and hunting probably on average about every other day until season ended here the end of the first week of January.
Initially I practiced with my vertical bow almost every day and during that regimen learned that my effectiveness/accuracy/consistency varied from day to day and more dramatically as the season progressed. Since I shot almost every day I realized that as I added layers of clothing it became increasingly difficult to meet my personal standards for effectiveness in making a clean humane kill.
If I wasn't shooting effectively at the ranges I wanted to hunt I simply would not hunt. It literally took years to develop and compile the clothing to be able to be what I consider to be effective out to 40 yards under all weather conditions with a compound vertical bow.
I tried crossbows because they logically seemed like an alternative that negated some of some of the uncontrollable variables inherent to vert bows. The first xbow I used was a klunker but an extremely accurate klunker. And eventually, I ended up shooting one that is light, maintenance free, and extremely accurate during all weather conditions. And there's always the increase in KE and the corresponding greater likelihood of a clean kill and retrieval.
Over the years I've gone from someone who preferred and used primitive technology (both rifles and bows) to someone who focuses upon effectiveness while at the same time carrying a weapon that is aesthetically appealing. Part of that is because as I reflected on my behavior I realized that when I failed with the less effective equipment I was not the one who suffered because of it. It was my quarry that paid the price for my preference in weapons.
The Necedah, a beautiful little bow, mostly rests in my den now. I occasionally shoot it in the yard but doubt I will ever hunt with it again.
I didn't mean to take over your thread with an xbow discussion. And certainly don't mean to demean your hunt. To each his own and you guys are obviously ethical hunters.
And to other viewers, no, I'm not financially associated with crossbows in any way. It's just that I've found them to be a very effective tool.

Argali Ah! The extent of your search is definitely not appreciated in the video. Very well then. Sometimes, although in this case you got to eat heart, you still have to leave with a broken one. Keep up the great content. Let me know if you’d be interested in a southern NM Aoudad Barbary sheep hunt. I’d love to guide you.

04:30 That's because DNR sends out a mass text & email to the deer with the starting & ending days of deer season bro.
Trust me, it's the same thing in New York especially with turkey. They day before the season, you trip over them. The day after?
Gone. Then the day after the season, they're a dozen and a half of them dancing a jig around your blind. (see my channel for video)

BTW, I'm going through my October Lull now. On Opening Day of bow season, I hit a doe at 40 yards. Thought I hit her good. We tracked her for 4 hours and the blood trail went cold too. I don't care if I would've ended up just feeding the coyotes. Not knowing is what killed me inside, but it wasn't because I didn't take every precaution before I pulled on that release. Sometimes, they just flinch or the winds plays a part or whatever. It's "hunting", not grocery shopping. Great video.
I had to let a buck walk away from me last week because I couldn't confirm that it was legal and a doe because she just wouldn't step out in front of that brush enough. I could've shot through the brush, but after Opening Day, I wasn't taking any chances. Patience...the hardest thing to master, but the one thing that will cut down on you tracking deer you don't recover.
Getting ready for our own Harvest Moon which this year is the Hunter's Moon tomorrow. Good luck out there this season.
