- Can you beat Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom without jumping?
This question was first tackled by Coel in 2014. Coel not only beat the game without jumping, but ended with 98 spatulas, only missing Defeat the Flying Dutchman and 10 socks. The playlist • BfBB: No A Jumping Cha... documents these efforts.
This video takes the challenge one step further. A cruise boost essentially turns the bash move into a jump. So how many spatulas and socks can be collected without jumping or cruise boosting?
This is a TAS, or Tool-Assisted Speedrun. Using tools, such as save states, frame advance, and memory viewers, an input file was made, which plays the game by itself. Check • How to create the perf... for a TAS explanation.
The Dolphin emulator dolphin-emu.org/ was used to emulate the game and create the TAS. This TAS movie was started about a year ago, but about 2 months and 36490 re-records of actual work were put in. Download the input file at drive.google.com/file/d/119iW... with some instructions. The TAS actually desynchronizes exiting the Sea Needle, but apart from that, everything is valid.
This TAS collects 105 spatulas with 0 socks left over in 2:43:34.416 hours without jumping or cruise boosting.
Since Mr. Krabs trade spatulas and a sock in Sand Mountain can be duplicated, under no restrictions it is possible to collect 108 spatulas with one sock left over. Check • (GC EMU) Bfbb: Duplica... and • BfBB Sock Duping on this. EDIT: We can now duplicate 9 Mr. Krabs spatulas • BFBB: Duplicating 9 Sp... which means 106 spatulas would have been possible.
So this TAS only misses the following three spatulas and one sock. Power Crystal Crysis, Defeat the Flying Dutchman, and Music is in the Ear of the Beholder together with the corresponding sock. Additionally, this TAS attempts to postpone unlocking the bubble bowl and cruise bubble moves as much as possible.
For this challenge, a jump is defined as using the A button in a way that is intended to give you upwards velocity, and a cruise boost is defined as having your bowl state locked while you can freely move.
An Any% run without pressing A is currently not known to be possible, due to the need to press A to go through taxi pads. However, with cheat codes it is possible to beat the game without any A presses. At • SpongeBob SquarePants:... you can see Four do this in 2018.

"I guess SpongeBob won't be winning that way."
_Wins that way anyway._
How did I miss this video until now? This is freaking great! Must have taken so much effort and time to put this TAS together...
It's a delight to watch the movement and creativity that's in this Walkthrough.
Wow, very close to Max% without any restrictions. Well done!
Taking advantage of the TAS feature and doing a jump less challenge. Love it, I’ll definitely check it out.
This eclipses my attempt at just trying to beat this game without double jumping. Peak SpongeBob running for sure
No jumping :o
But fr man, you been workin on this for a while and it turned out amazing.
This is so trippy but brilliant at the same time! Kudos!
This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen
Amazing tas! Good job Smiley, the bowl in museum was one of the sickest moments.
I feel honored I got to make a thumbnail for a project like this :)
GG

Well done, Mr. Smiles :)

you were right! all spats
@@dultzywaltzy your incorrect
NO WAYYYY ITSA YOU
Wow
Why. Is all of spongebobs momentum like infinity when you load into the beginning cutscene
Edit: btw if you want to skip spongebob bashing up the jelly caves slide here are the timestamps 1:43:20 - 1:44:12
I think the memory address is just used for something else during the cutscene, so it's not actually momentum.
What is the x,y and z position based on, and does it change relative to each level or is it a constant throughout the game? Like is there a 0,0,0 position in each level or is there only one 0,0,0 position in the whole game?
Every level has its own origin, usually at a sensible location like where you're supposed to first spawn in, though not always.
Did You Have To Jump When You Used The Used The Bubble Launch?
Do you mean the bubble bash / bubble helmet? Because that is considered an attack move in this game. Under normal gameplay, you can only use the bash to hit enemies and buttons that are above you, since you don't have any control over your movement during a bash. You need to do something creative to have momentum during a bash and use it to move around.

CB?
CB is short for Cruise Boost, which is one of the biggest exploits in the game. Since a Cruise Boost practically lets you jump with a Bubble Bash, I decided to try and avoid it in this Jumpless TAS. See the description for more details.
