Its been proven in multiple episodes that hes a good driver he just has severe test anxiety and freaks out under pressure.
It depends on the writer. In most episodes, he has severe test anxiety, but in episodes like "Boat Smarts", he's an idiot.

@@christianburnett236Spongebob has a small brain, bigger than Patrick's but not enough to think properly, he's a adult but his small brain is most likely capped at a teenager maturity, he doesn't care about being annoying, or being a danger to others but if you say the right thing he'll get upset and cry like a child. I shall give a example, Ms.Puff called SpongeBob "Unteachable" and that made him burst into tears and go into a short term depression, then he also cries over spilled milk literally only to remember he has more of it. Squidward has told Spongebob he hates him and when Squidward asks "You know I hate you right?" Spongebob only replies with "Yes, yes I do." He doesn't care unless you're one of the closer friends in the show since that's only because of his brain capacity.

There’s also an episode where Mrs Puff comes to the conclusion that SpongeBob is terrified of the driving course at her boating school, so to ease his mind, she takes him to a abandoned road where she tells him to remember that there’s nothing but the road and it would’ve worked, had Mrs Puff not crossed city lines in the middle of the test
In Patrick's defense, he was driving within the speed limit without panic, and it that driving test, there are no other cars around. If I remember right, there isn't even a stop light

Interestingly, the episode, Tutor Sauce, offers a subtle reason why SpongeBob keeps failing his drivers test. In the episode, Krabs teaches SpongeBob how to drive, but whenever SpongeBob failed, Krabs didn't blame him and tries another method, no matter how unorthodox it was. Compare that with Mrs Puff, who acted like a jerkass whenever SpongeBob failed his test.

You know what's weird? In the episode Spongebob Longpants, when Spongebob drove so badly but the instructor passed him just because his pants was long. But when he switched back to his short pants, the instructor ripped his license. This is very weird, as the length of your pants doesn't have anything to do with your driving skills whatsoever. It could be a silly story the creators made, or it's a law in Bikini Bottom that you must have long pants to drive the test. But then you realize that most of Spongebob's classmates don't even wear pants at all, so it's pointless.
Another thing is in the episode where Spongebob drives blindfolded. In reality, you can't really drive blindfolded because you have to see the road to concentrate. But when Spongebob wears his blindfold, he somehow drives really good. And when he took his blindfold off, he's scared at driving and fails miserably. So maybe Spongebob is scared of the road, but he has a special ability to detect things around him when he's blindfolded. I'd say it's a unique superpower, but again maybe it could be just a silly story made by the creators.

There's also the possibility of them actually being qualified but getting into an accident anyway because they were unlucky.
Maybe the other driver couldn't drive. Maybe HE couldn't drive. Maybe both, or maybe none. Who knows!

That being said, when the show premiered in 1999, we can conclude that based on his date of birth of 1986 that Spongebob was at _least_ thirteen years old. People talk about Spongebob being childish in the earlier episodes, and thats because he _is_ childish - he was a Teenager living on his own. The Age of Adulthood may be different in Bikini Bottom compared to the rest of the world but this explains quite a bit. That being said, Spongebob should be round about thirty-eight at this point in time(2024).

I remember an episode where Mr Krabs and Plankton have to take Mrs Puff's test and in it SpongeBob actually completes the course, only to crash into Plankton and Mr Krabs causing a huge explosion.

SpongeBob has intelligence but not wisdom so he can easily pass the oral test but can't apply that knowledge to the physical whereas Patrick used to be mostly wisdom with only rare moments of intelligence meaning if he was given the oral test he'd likely fail it but the fact Ms puff skipped it allowed him to use his wisdom to think on the spot and figure out what to do thus passing the test without actually becoming a good driver as he wasn't actually learning he was just improvising in a way that didn't translate from the controlled environment of the test into the real world

The green fish sounds younger in that second appearance. Which lends credence to my own theory that all the episodes are out of order.
You may be asking how it took that guy so long that he sounds way older when he finally passes in spite of Spongebob only failing 37 times.. But in the Season 4 episode Mrs. Puff You're Fired it is revealed that he failed over a million times, something which gets Mrs. Puff fired. At the end, his entire record was destroyed so it was like he never failed. And Spongebob being who he is wouldn't want to reignite the troubles that would get Mrs. Puff fired again (even though oblivious to him she probably would) likely just goes along with it and starts over counting.
This also explains another inconsistancy since Patrick knew about Spongebob's Library well enough to hide in it despite not knowing about it in much later episodes.
The fact that SpongeBob supposedly has hair (yellow apparently, so not his eyelashes) even though we can’t see it slightly disturbing.

I've rode in countless cars in my life, it doesn't seem like a hard thing to do. To drive a vehicle. But driving is a different experience than riding. And I might be in the same boat as SpongeBob....uh...not, literally.
If you get a DUI or DWI, you may have to take court ordered driver improvement programs to get your DL reinstated. I have a possible theory that is overlooked: Spongebob may suffer from PTSD while being in a vehicle earlier in his life. He may have suffered a very traumatic episode to fail his driving test so many times!
It's quite easy to get a license, and there's plenty of people on the road today that shouldn't be allowed to drive ANYTHING.
Patrick knows how to drive, but driving RESPONSIBILY is something else.

Ms. Puff probably is a good teacher as she has a low failure rate (that one student being an expectation), and overall functions accurately to an American driving school that focuses more on ticking off boxes then teaching. Most drivers ed courses AT MOST last an entire summer break meaning that she probably had a limited time frame. Maybe they cut out the practice as we only see spongebob testing which is very different then practicing.

She also gets to maintain the record of the test having a low pass rate because of SpongeBob’s constant failures. It creates an illusion of weeding out the weak with high standards, which is a big factor in accreditation of schools.
Rebuttals:
1. That’s clearly a different fish
2. Just because Patrick is stupid doesn’t mean he can’t or doesn’t know how to drive a boat. Also careless driving doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to drive. It just means he’s being careless in his driving. Deliberately, I might add.
3-a). Mrs. Puff is actually the best boating instructor. She’s so good that 99.9% of people can pass. We have no evidence of anyone passing her class illegitimately (except SpongeBob. Continue reading). The Patrick situation can be due to bikini bottom laws.
3-b). If death is an expectation in taking your boating class, you probably shouldn’t be teaching boating class. This disqualifies mr shark guy from being the best.
4. The reason SpongeBob fails is because of jitters and subconscious mental block (maybe specifically in relation to boats).
a) He passes when Patrick calms him down when they were cheating
b) he drives extremely well when he was blinded by Patrick’s shorts when shark guy was the instructor.
c) Even absent ms puff, he crashes the invisible boat mobile while being able to see.
d) he successfully drives a rock to a customer’s house and to the Krusty Krab will full control and 0 accidents. (He ran squidward over but that was clearly for the gag and again, deliberate wreckless driving just means that he is being deliberately wreckless. Not that doesn’t know how to drive).
e) he drives a boat successfully (and “passes”) when Mrs puff was able to calm his nerves saying something like “focus on the road. There is nothing but the road,” which he uses to hypnotize his self. He didn’t panic until he was broken out of his hypno state and realized he was on the highway and couldn’t see the road because of other vehicles. He was still able to flawlessly (and stylishly) dock the boat.
100% SpongeBob’s fault that he fails. It’s to the point that felon, Mrs puff, never seems to be able to justify passing him despite knowing that if he doesn’t pass, he will continue to be the bane of her existence forever.

The real reason why Patrick is a bad driver is because he’s careless.

I am new to these theory videos. So it is interesting to hear a theory that two fish in different episodes, even though they have they same drawing, are thought to be the same, and the explanation to rationalize them being the same is that they got in an accident that changed the sound of their voice... I don't take this seriously but admittedly these theory vids are pretty cool and deep.

spongebob can drive very easily... he just has extreme anxiety while driving... which is why he can drive perfectly while blindfolded or when he has patrick coaching him because it takes his mind off the actual driving.
To me Ms Puff loves money as much as Mr Krabs. I mean, yeah she might not be allowed to tell spongebon he can't try ever again, but she is totally ok with saying. "I can't help you, I really tried, but I can't. Please search another driving teacher."

There is also one episode about the boating museum, but I do not remember much about it to know if he drove well or not.
Besides him being nervous, I think he needs a more hands-on approach, but a more gentle one, unlike the sharks in that one episode.

the problem... is that spongebob is deathly afraid of driving... hes afraid of boats in general everytime he gets in the boat without a blindfold he crashes...

This show has absolutely no continuity. The episode you're talking about says he failed millions of times, but in season 4, he's claimed to have taken it only 40 some times. The other student who got his license and then didn't have it is also explained by poor continuity. It is hilarious that RUclipsrs bother to over-analyze this show so much, though

Nah bro, Mrs. Puff and Spongebob are middle aged social losers that are secretly in love with each other. Spongebob gets nervous sitting super close to Mrs. Puff, and Mrs. Puff constantly fails Spongebob to keep him within her grasp.
In one episode, Spongebob mentions Mrs. Puff doesn't like talking about her deceased husband. Like when and why would that conversation ever need to be brought up in a school setting? Unless at one point they actually went out.

Hmm, about 3 minutes in, the character voice change in reality is it's just a different voice actor. It happens sometimes man.
My theory is that Spongebob isn't meant to drive at all. I'm pretty sure it's hinted in a lot of episodes, like "Boat Smarts" for example. It's not even the fact he's dangerous on the road (though it is easy to argue that it's the main reason), it's just that for some reason (apart from him being too dangerous to allow on the roadways in the ocean), the universe doesn't want him behind a wheel. The only exception to this is his unicycle and even the Invisible Boat Mobile. Other than that, the universe just doesn't want him on any road, no matter what.
It's actually very similar to The Amazing World of Gumball where Richard is not supposed to have a job because it could destroy the universe. I'm not saying both cartoon universes are connected, but Spongebob and Richard are kind of similar in that they can't do a specific thing, even though no actual explanation as to why is provided for the former and provided for the latter.
That would make some sense since Steven Hillenburg doesn't want Spongebob to get his boating license. Before Steven died, he made a set of guidelines that the show must follow at all times. One of them being that Spongebob must never pass his boating license. So I guess in Spongebob's universe, he must never get his license, or it's gonna be the end of the world as Mrs. Puff says.
