- Lets replace the internal capacitors and fix the faded polarised LCD displays on these vintage handheld gaming systems. Lets play them a little and have some fun too! 3d printed case and covers battery covers make all the difference! Repair and refurbish your game and watch!
Remember those back in the day. Turn screws in reverse until the "click" so you use the old thread.
Very very good point Tim! ... reverse until the clunk!
THIS IS EXACTLY THE GAME AND WATCH REPAIR VIDEO I WAS LOOKING FOR. involving capacitor replacements
Good luck my friend!!! I love the G&W
You were definitely the first person to open up that DK Jr. I'm really surprised they don't do some form of replacement LCD with the amount of people getting in to these. I used to love these as a kid, I hand Donkey Kong, dual screen and I believe donkey Kong II (one was orange and one chocolate brown if memory serves) my brother still has the Zelda, Terri's and Mario 3 watches
That's what I get for commenting whilst still watching, I had that Donkey Kong
My sister has donkey King Jr, still boxed, this was a real trip down memory lane
@@JackBealeGuitar I remember about 9 or 10 years ago I saw some new old stock come up on ebay, all even still had the battery pull, japanese ones but they was up for between £150 and £200, I really wish I had money then lol
@@leeg4116 yeah that's a bit much 😂
whhhhyyyy are these things soooo expensive now... I am loving the nostalgic experience of playing them though... they are thoroughly addictive!
Brilliant job on the battery compartment; definitely going to need that trick in my arsenal one day.
You've inspired me to dig out my old Mario's Cement Factory. Was surprised to find it still boxed and in working order.
Superb! ... great nostalgia and fun! Enjoy playing cement factory!
@@DubiousEngineering Unfortunately, seven-year-old-me thought it was a good idea to 'clean' it with hairspray. Must have been some acetone in there as the previous plastic screen is warped.
Might try gently ironing it flat or something...
Awww. Damn! If it’s just the polarised filter - you can buy replacement quite cheap!
@@DubiousEngineering Sadly not. Think I'll leave it warped as some of the ink has transferred to the LCD. Might pick up some laser printer transparency sheets and try printing a replacement...
Nice bunch of clever repairs 🥃 👍 😊
thanks sparkly... there was enough sun today to warrant changing some batteries out in he solar powered shed... can’t wait to do some shed and buried repairs soon :-). ... that’s your channel (Pop over an visit sparky if you get chance for some tool renovations and boot sale hauls!)
@@DubiousEngineering And maybe I will get some other project done soon you never know 😁 Thanks Howard 👍 😊
Love these portable devices. Had the donkey Kong when I was a young lad.
I think I may just go ahead and play mine for a few minutes now :-)
I didn't realise how expensive those Game and Watch systems are now. £60 for a non working Octopus! I've just checked eBay for the only one that I have which his Squish. Upwards of £25! I would have thought it was worth nothing :D Well done on fixing those machines.
it’s genuinely bonkers the money these things sell for ... even when there in bad condition! ... I’m going to look up squish shortly!
I was playing these online last week :)
Oh and early happy birthday young'un.
someone actually watched enough of a video and read the comments! Dear Mr Davies... thank you very much!
Some old iconic old LCD games. Nice CPRs ;)
proper old school lovelies... I should do a live stream one night... playing the G&W
Love this, I played donkey Kong Jr a load when I was small, it was my sisters, but I've played all these. You got to say zebra connector again! Mr blobby blobby blobby 😂
I’m still looking forward to my pink panther theme tune :-). bloodily bloody bloody... now I have. a headache
@@DubiousEngineering it'll happen
Good job, nice fixes 👍
What an honour!!! Thanks for swinging by and the kind words!! I’d love to have a chance to do a Skype call one day and discuss some of your projects with a view to making a short 15 min video!! Let me know if that’s possible :-). All the best, Howard
@Dubiou Engineering @My Mate Vince, now there's a video that would go to the top of my watch list!
@@DubiousEngineering Hey Howard. I am working on an idea which will involve other RUclipsrs. It is just an idea at present, give me a couple of months and I will contact you as you may be interested. Keep up the good work👍👍👍
Clearly very happy to support!!! Thanks 🙏 and looking forward to helping!!!

Hello i have a game & watch parachute and the Left & right Buttons dont work i opened it up and cleaned the board contacts with isopropyl it had black soot on the contacts both of them i put it back together and the buttons still dont work do you no what the problem is & how can i fix this Thanks Jos
It’s a tough one…. Try alcohol on a cotton bud and clean the pads on the underside of the buttons
Excellent mastery. May I ask what type of battery does it use? Thanks.
LR44 I believe
Hello, I have a problem with a OCTUPUS game.
The right button do not work an the left button let shift the guy to the right side.
I have replaced the 2 capacitors. Unfortunately this do not help.
Do you have a idea what could help? Or what could be the problem?
That's really weird! I'm guessing you cleaned the PCB pads and buttons with alcohol. It's almost like the pcb tracks are crossed over or shorted... any corrosion or water get into it?
Great video ! I have a G&W parachute and it was working fine a friend had put bread batteries in there and these were a bit thicker it worked for a few minutes and then when pressing the buttons everything went off.. any suggestions?
Perhaps adjust the battery springs to make sure the batteries are actually touching the contacts?
@@DubiousEngineering Thank you.. I took the unit to peices cleaned up everything again removed the LCD cleaned the battery terminals etc and it fired into life again ..
Nice job! I was wondering what was the specification of the capacitors that was replaced. Trying to find replacements for a Nintendo Pinball Game & Watch, which have very grey figures, despite new batteries and new polarising filters.
I think the LCD degrades over time... not sure this will help.
Hi I'd like a blue battery cover please. How do I go about obtaining one?
Blue... aww I don't think I have blue :-( sorry
i just purchased a set of 16v 10uF electrolytic capacitors and replaced those on two of my game and watch units... and while it did fix the power issue (those units used to reset or have garbled graphics randomly), it did not fix the display (some of the images on the screen are blurred depending on what images are displayed, and the refresh rate is super bad)
i still have my 0.47uF tantalum capacitors and all kinds of ceramic capacitors waiting to be delivered...
Best of luck my friend!! Love these games
Hello, i've got the "Donkey Kong" with double screen, It has massive LCD bleeding: Is It possibile to replace the screens or fix the issue?
Sadly, neither unless you find another unit with good screens... perhaps there's one out here with a badly scuffed case and good screens
@@DubiousEngineering thank you 🙏
do you think people could manage to creat the Game and Watch LCD screens? There are so mang custom lcd screens but nowhere you find one that fit to the game and watch
Awww I wish they could!! ..
Cambiaste los capacitores por otros iguales
Me refiero si el de tantalio lo cambiaste por otro de tantalio de la misma capacidad?
I think I changed from tantalum to electrolytic
what can i do if i want to fix my snoopy tennis with a bleeding screen
Sorry to say, buy a replacement screen. There's no fix for the bleed
Excellent work. I have a game and watch that works well, but only if I press the unit together. In other words, there are no sounds or visuals, but if I put my finger on the front of the game, my thumb on the back and apply pressure, it works. I opened it up and cleaned it well, also thinking perhaps it just hadn't been screwed back together firmly...nope. Then I put some thin cardboard inside the unit and got partial visuals & sound. Something inside is just not touching something else as it should, but I can't figure it out. Any suggestions?
It's possible you have a broken track on the PCB ... that would be difficult to fix. Please do check cables and solder joints, also make sure the battery terminals are making contact . Good luck!!
@@DubiousEngineering Thank you. 'm inclined to believe it must (mainly) be the battery connector(s). I cleaned the unit again and fiddled a little with the battery compartment. Right now, I have almost all of the graphics showing. I don't want to open it up again though, because the last time I did, I broke off the speaker wires (taped them back, as I don't have a soldiering iron and the sound is fine again).
I couldn’t get how to get rid of screen bleeding? Can u pl help?
Also, why capacitors were replaced is not clear…
You can't get rid of screen bleed... Sorry
@@DubiousEngineering can u pl tell when capacitors are to be replaced?
Very Nice vids.
I got one of the double case one, but the screen wire between tjem have been cut off.
You know about any sites selling parts spesific for these legendary Machines?
😀
Awww that little flexi cable broke? How annoying... so sorry, I don't have a solution for you!
What did you win on ebay?
hahahah... yeah. you don’t win on eBay ... only eBay wins!
Hi there. Amazing video. I did as you did in this video. I changed the caps with 25v 10uf and 0.33uf tantalum cap but the lcd is still bleak and dim. I changed the polarizer too. I happen to have 2 donkey kong DK52. When i change the lcd from the first game to the other i see all the sprites and when i put it back again in the first one the sprites are bleak and dim. So the issue is definitely with the pcb. How do i solve this pcb dimness? I change the caps and tried but still the same. Anything else that we need to troubleshoot to check if the pcb is all okay? I also changed the picafarad ceramic disc caps. Still the same. I left the oscillator as it is, as they hardly give up unless physically damaged. Could it be the problem of the motherboard IC chip? Please make a video of troubleshooting the pcb if possible. It will be of greaf help. Regards
I don’t think there’s much to do on the PCB, it’s a blob chip…. So, I think you’ve done everything you can…. Sadly….
@@DubiousEngineering thank you so much for replying. The chip must have given away for did its life. 42 years and still this thing works, is amazing. I totally enjoy your vids.. thank you again..
My Octopus game and watch has two capacitors also...which look the same rating. A 10uf 16V and a 33uf 35V Tantalum. I'm having a real hard time sourcing the Tantalum...could this be substituted?
Oh yes, just use a modern day electrolytic cap...
What were the values for both electrolytic and tantalum capacitors? Great content. Thank you!
So sorry, I'd have no idea without opening them up again@
I have the same issue with my octopus g&w and i would be curious too of knowing what kind of capacitor are needed for the replacement. (Sorry for my bad english)
Hi
I have a Donkey Kong jr game&watch, but the second line with donkey Kong at the bottom doesn‘t get displayed, everything Else is working fine, does anyone know this problem?
It may be the zebra connector... a rubber strip that connects the LCD to the PCB ... see if you can carefully pop it off and give it a clean.
Good morning. I have a problem with my g&w donkey kong jr. When I insert the batteries, all the sprites appear on the screen but the game doesn't start (no button works.... gamea, gameb time, acl,...). I noticed that when I insert the batteries, 12:00 does not appear on the display but 18:88. Could it be a capacitor problem? Thanks and greetings
Ahhh that sounds like the micro isn't starting. About the only thing you can do is replace the capacitor and hope!
@@DubiousEngineering
OK thanks. Only two questions. First question. What function do the two capacitors near the batteries have? Second question. Near the clock are there two more capacitors? What are they for? thanks and a greeting.
Hello to you m0xxx heard you on 2m tried a contact but lost you on monday great channel
Hi there so sorry!! You were the Scottish sounding station in Glastonbury! ... so sorry battery has died on handheld!!!
@@DubiousEngineering ok buddy hear you again sometime
Do you know were can I buy spare parts for that game? My JUMP button is missing and I want to fix it. Thanks!
Awww so sorry to hear, maybe someone can 3D print you a button?
I have missing characters. How to fix those? Also where to buy the capacitors?
The adjust the display zebra connector and give things a clean... RS sell the caps... or eBay
@@DubiousEngineering I removed the zebra and cleaned... I also removed the rubber connector which connects board to lcd and cleaned still missing characters. Anything after that? Thanks...
@@vintageseller7700 either the zebra connector is damaged, or the lcd glass itself is damaged
"my" donky kong jr needs a battery cover... and a button but it workds perfectly after at least 25 years in the attic.
I can post you out a battery cover....if your interested
@@DubiousEngineering hello that's very kind of you, thanks, but i live in France so it might cost more that you expect.
Should use LR43 in the single screen games. LR44 are thicker and for the dual screen games.
Thanks for the tip!
@@DubiousEngineering no problem. It actually has the battery type printer on the rear casing. The confusion around batteries is possibly why so many battery cases are missing these days. If they broke people would likely have binned them. At least we can print reasonable facsimiles these days!
Next time you do this, remember that the polarized filter goes FIRST. So it covers the drawing and it doesn't get ruined
very very very good point!
Did you say £60 ?!?!
Yeah ... :-(. They are soooo expensive
I got the Donkey Kong as a kid from our newlywed relatives. They flew from Oz (bought it from HK?) and outstayed their welcome for a month. 🛌🛀🚽
Unfortunately I got frustrated playing and bashed the back of the top screen on a desk corner, cracking the LCD. 💔🤦♂️
Oh wow!!! What a story!! Especially now!! Mint and boxed they range from £100 to £250 ... bonkers eh?!?
Great job on first G&W but graphic is not going first...front must be polarizer not graphic ;) take care !
Thanks for the tip!! The polariser then helps protect the screen
Did you replace the Tantalum cap with an electrolytic one? If so, what was the rating of that Cap? Could you possibly list the ratings on both caps that you ended up using? Thank you so much...this was a fantastic video!
glad you found it useful! ... I used a 10uf 20v cap on the power supply side and a 1uf 20v cap to replace the tantalum bead (the bead is 0.33uf but 1uf is fine) ... keep an eye on polarity!
@@DubiousEngineering i will keep this in mind. thanks!
@@DubiousEngineering hmmm, perhaps I'm wrong then. This green cap is labeled 33/35 ... is this a .33uf cap?
Hola, muy buen tutorial
cuales son los valores maximos admisibles para los capacitadores?.
Me refiero a voltaje. Gracias
Why need to replace the capacitors ?
The capacitors degrade with time
@@DubiousEngineering ok thank you
@@DubiousEngineering do we need two polarized filter one inside the glass and one outside ?
Cool
Thanks best 6
Why can't Nintendo re-launch this stuff?
God yes… in OLED displays
If you gave JR-55 Nintendo donkey Kong I want to buy
If you have
I think I do... and I may sell
@@DubiousEngineering
How much kindly I want this game ,its my most childhood favourite game.
Aggghhh sadly, I've just checked and the one I have isn't the jr-55 it is orange not brown. So sorry 😞
Thanks for the video I saw 2 vintage G&W original on sell in my city. I am thinking of giving it a try. I will have a look at it, hopefully there is no severe LCD leak.
