Having recently started repairing watches I can 100% agree with the idea that the first high quality tool you need is a case knife/opener. Cheap case knives are not only miserable but often don't work and mostly end up damaging things. You can get by with cheap everything else at first. I've worked on so many different mechanical systems, both professionally and personally and always follow the same approach, buy the cheapest tools you can at first, but when you replace them buy the best. Its amazing how well cheap tools work and how long they last most of the time. Tweezers were the second item I upgraded. Especially with the ultra fine tweezers there is just a huge difference in steel quality and the shape and angle of the tips.
Either way, thanks for the level-headed approach and encouragement. I still am sort of in a place of being intimidated by watches and the tools that go with them. Most other videos like this lay out hundreds of dollars in tools and say thats what you need to get started. So its nice to hear a contrary opinion on that front and know I'm not needlessly beating my head against the wall here.

My husband taught himself, then went to school and knew more than the teacher but he had to get certified. He bought thousands and thousands of tools, had a very prosperous word of mouth business going these past few years, jewelry stores and pawn shops were using him and he worked here from home. My husband suffered a heart attack and passed away only 17 mths ago and I have everything for sale, from his work benches, sconic cleaners, batteries, crystals, main springs, screw drivers, presses, books, etc... nothing cheap. Mostly old, he specialized in vintage watch repair but had several high end clients as well. He started with cheaper, but quickly upgraded as business began to pour in.
If you guys know of anyone looking for a turn key start up, please email me at cdfalls@yahoo.com
I'm located in Pensacola Fl. area. I'm not absolutely positive of the price for it all, but am thinking along the lines of 20k.
      Thank you so much.

I was looking for a good watch repair video and this is a good starting point. I work on my own computers so I do have most of these hand tools including a ultrasonic cleaner. All I want to do is learn how to fix my own watches. I still have the chronograph watch that I wore in High School ( 50years ago) that I want to revive. I also bought a 200 piece watch repair kit, so I am ready to start. Needless to say I subscribed.

This past month i've been tinkering with the idea of buying a cheap movement and some tools to learn more and appreciate the craftsmanship of what goes on behind the hands and dial. If i'm putting together a list of necessities to just play around and practice, do you think a loupe would be on that list? Thanks for the video.

    • @todorelojconfernando

+Jack that's great that your going to give the surgery part of watch collecting a chance, get yourself a loupe with a head band and don't spend to much on tools you'll get them once you get more in to repairing. 😊

@@todorelojconfernando Would you say it's a hobby that costs more that you get back (money wise)? I love watches and would love to start tinkering with them and I don't care about making a profit. But I would also not want to sink a bunch of money into a hobby right now since I'm a student.

Collecting Vintage Watches bingo brother that's the machine I use is a Ace Timer 1000 and I swear by the thing. They are inexpensive, and very affordable. If the mic goes bad you can get another one, but for the money you would be just as well off to get another timegrapher. You always have a great way of saying things Fernando. Great video and that's a good start of tools and useful things to have. I would have only added pegwood, pithwood ,and rodico and one dip for doing a balance and the palate jewels most solutions will eat away or outright melt shellac. L&R 111 and #3 are great cleaners I use them myself to a great effect. I mixed my own cleaner for a good while and did ok, but Zenith and L&R cleaners are muuuuuuuuch better.

In the beginning you say "You need one of these" without telling the name of it. You can get them for about $3 on ebay. I have no idea what it is called to find it on ebay.

Shitty tweezers are one of the biggest pains in the ass EVER! Is a pair of precision tweezers worth $40 for one pair? YES! Each arm of the tweezer needs to be perfectly balanced with the other arm, otherwise your tweezers wind up shooting small parts all over your work bench. I made the mistake of trying to use cheap tweezers. Losing the hand spring from an old French 18th century pistol can cost me $48,000, so that $40 pair of tweezers just paid for itself. It just paid for itself 1200x over! Get at least a couple pair of quality tweezers. Pakistan does NOT make quality tweezers. One pair in 5 or 6 will be good enough, but the other 4 or 5 are junk!

Two points: 1 watch enthusiasts should not be working on watches. 1 tools* not tool's

A S I totally disagree if your in to watches you should learn to work even a little on watches besides the point if you pay for that watch you can do what ever you want to it, thank you for the spelling correction 😁

@@lordofbees9067 Dude get fucked and stop telling people what they can do with ((their)) property. How do you think the first watch makers learned? Trial and error. Scientific method and an engineering mindset. Like all skills, it can be learned with books and practice. Some may be better than others. I'm sure people with a higher IQ has self "Mastered watch making" to some degree. Knowing all if not most aspects including machining their own parts.
