do not throw away the damaged ribbon cable, i fixed mine with a Conductive Paint Pen. If you are interested, i have one G&W that does not work and i could not figure out why. i would send it do you for free, if you are interested.
I am 44 years old so I remember playing with these as a kid, they were very popular and lots of kids at school had them. It's great to see them being appreciated by people who were not even born (I assume!) when they were around.
This was my first computer game, aged 5. I LOVED it, though once I'd "clocked it" (ie scored more than 100 points at which point it returns to 0 pts) 3 times, I lost a bit of interest, and started messing around with its insides. I still have it, but it's not in the best condition...! You've almost inspired me to look for a donor device to restore mine with... I know for one that I need a new ribbon, as - well, I was curious how the ribbon worked... and decided to poke holes in it til something happened..! :}
That Game&Watch is the first game I had as a kid, my parents got it for me during a trip to Spain in around '86. I remember the bloops and bleeps driving them mental when they realised what they had unleashed :P
My mate had one of these back in the 80s, i must admit i found it just very frustrating and at the time i had an Amstrad cpc so it was no comparison, for me it was like comparing a jet to bike haha, little did i know what was to come in technology! another great video btw
I'm just glad that I still have mine, in working order also. These little items are a treasure to own and still function. A great video and tribute to an excellent gaming gadget ;)
Great vid. I love the game and watch games. Dug mine out recently to show the kids. Donkey kong, zelda and tropical fish saw me though many a long journey
Or even buy a replacement one even cheaper. There is one seller offering color matched ones that look really close to the original at a fraction of the price.
Like the James Bond NATO watch strap on your watch there. BTW not sure if it was Big Clive or someone else who said some universities have the capability to reproduce plastic backed circuit wafers I think the technical term is as I am after one for my 1980's Vespa but I do think its possible now to get reproduction ribbon cables, zebra strips and flexible circuit boards made and prob better than the original too.
My first "computer game". 1983 brand new from the cigarette counter at a major grocery store. I played it so much till about 4 years later I got the bug of taking everything apart and you can guess what happened from there.....
Great fix, congrats on having a fully working unit. Though like someone else below said you could possibly use conductive glue to fix the other ribbon cable if it's torn.
I have a game and watch rain and shower in good condition yes there are 3 or 4 scratches on the back and front but still good wuld you like to take a look on it to see if its still good i also have the batery cover
Hi, thanks for the great video! Wondering if you have any link or clip how to assemble the ribbon cable and the LCD screen. I had a ‘great idea’ to clean my DK and ended up with a challenge to stick everything together…
Hi ! I got a Donkey Kong like your's in the video. Do you have any Idea how I could get the front metal ? Or any spare for that ? I would love to put restaurate mine a little ... Andy help would be appreciated. Thanks !
My Mario's Cement Factory game and watch required a very odd fix! I flipped the metal film behind the polarizer, and everything was fine again. I guess it was opened before.
Yep the reflector is laminated on one side with the rear polarizer so whoever opened it put it back in the wrong orientation, figure they broke it when nothing showed on the lcd and gave/sold it away lol
If I could go back in time, buy a full set and keep them in mint condition ... (I'd say never open them, but let's be honest I'd have to or I'd go insane)
@@sjm4306 at one point you could get all the game and watch on to your DSi , DSi XL, but Nintendo got rid of the shop. I at least got cement factory on my DSi XL.
Did the ribbon cable end up needing to be replaced in the end, or was the issue all from the poor connection at the PCB? My Donkey Kong has the exact same set of sprites missing.
Hi, great video. I found mine on the attic but it's missing the outside shield "Game & Watch Nintendo. Donkey Kong Multiscreen." Do you have any tips to get one?
I have three of these consoles all three have the same problem the same battery terminal on each is broken, can the terminals be replaced/repaired as these games belong to a boy with Autism and mental disabilities who can only play these games and they are getting so expensive now and harder to find but it keeps him settled which is all that matters any help would be appreciated!
thanks for the video love u and ur vids also can u do a new 3ds or new 3ds xl i want to buy one so i want to know how it works (from a professional) before i do any repairs. thanks
You know, I have owned one of those since they were new. And it never clicked to me when the DS came out that it was based on this. Everyone was calling the design crazy and revolutionary. It was just a Game and Watch.
Elliot, can you help me? I did a backlight and bivert on my dmg, thanks to your videos... But know i have hexagonal pattern on the screen? I’ve plugged the screen into another working gameboy, same thing so it’s definitely the screen. Is it repairable? It worked before lol...Thanks

I used to have one, but it aged, and it got thrown away...
I miss it so much.
Ended up looking amazing! (apart from the battery cover) Good job TRF!
Thank you James
I've got the very one my dad had as a kid. didn't lose the battery cover. though the clip for the lid did break off some time.
This has to be one of your most exciting videos brother.
I have that game and watch. I wonder if it still works. I have not tried it in over 20 years.
great job fixing it.
Absolutely love g&w's, was super lucky to have my nearly mint octopus and the donald and mickey Roarke kindly gifted me.
Nice one man!
Good old Mr Sheen to save the day
Awesome stuff, too bad working G&W are so expensive now. If you want to put the finishing touches you can find orange battery covers on eBay.

Great video as always ❤️👍
I have one of those handed down from my mum in amazing condition.
One of the local game stores in my town sells the old Game and Watch handhelds, but they are rather expensive.

Is that a normal thing that the ribbon cable is exposed at the folding hinge? Makes sense why they all conk out eventually I guess.

So to have a fully complete Donkey Kong G&W is it just the battery cover that you need now?
I remember staring at these at Kmart's jeweler counter back in the 80's all of them clicking around on the screens. They were about $25 back then.

I’m surprised that they designed it so the ribbon cable is just... exposed during normal use. No wonder so many break.
should have created a white reflective film instead of gray
Ha the game and watch is cool to look back to
I wish my Lifeboat Game & Watch was still working condition. Is there any place (other than eBay) I can buy a working one?
