  • Kobe Bryant was on the cold streak that February averaging a mere 28 points per game and having played well in only 3 games that month. After the 81 point game, he was constantly getting doubled within striking distance, which was from the free throw line of the opponent's basket. Zones were being geared towards him and he was being doubled off the ball. It didn't stop him from breaking out in this game. In the game, he shot 14-28 from the field, 5-14 from downtown for 39 points and added 9 assists along with 2 steals.
Kobe had one of the more quiet 40(39) point games of the season. He started the game scoring 11 points in the 1st quarter along 4 assists. Never in the game did he look to be aggressive and score points in an onslaught. He didn't force too much either shooting very good shot attempts, until the end of the game. However, Kobe Bryant and his Lakers shot themselves in the foot shooting a flimsy 55% from the free throw line. It was even more detriment to the team when they shot a dismal 6-15 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter when their lead slipped away. Eventually, the Lakers scored a very disappointing loss to the Hawks losing by 4 due to clumsy play at the end and lack of defense while wasting a 39 point effort by Kobe.
    Other Notes:
Kobe Bryant had the famous 30 feet double clutch desperation three to beat the shot clock in this game in the 3rd quarter that showed his unlimited range. As Hubie Brown said, "Range is not a factor for Kobe."
Kobe shot 6-12 from the free throw line and could've had a 45 point line.

I cant believe that Smush Parker acutally said that the problems with the lakers "start and end with kobe" the Lakers probably would have been better off playing with only four players than having smush on the court

    I remember this game.
    That Three was rediculous.
Showed that they were a young team down the stretch.

the best thing about kobe's shots was that it gave turiaf a reason to celebrate on the bench.

This was probably around the time that Kobe stopped sitting with Smush and the rest of them, haha. These 04-07 Lakers were stressing to say the least.

Kobe played awesome, but what a pathetic loss, seriously, they could tie it on a fastbreak but blew it, forced hawks to miss at the other end but didnt box out a hawks get an easy offensive rebound and putback.

The Warriors teammates are so good and get so many open looks because Curry draws much more defensive attention away from them than LeBron does with his, since Curry is a threat as soon as he steps over half court. Even though they average the same assists, with Curry playing less minutes, Curry creates much more for his teammates because of the much stronger defensive attention he draws
The Heat were one of the best 3-point % teams during his time in Miami and they also had a great defensive cast in that timespan.
Haslem slowed down Dirk in the 2011 Finals compared to the first 3 rounds when he was on fire, Wade was their best perimeter defender in the 2011 Finals and 2012 Finals when he did the best job on Westbrook.
Even in LeBron's best defensive year in 2013 he got lit up by Paul George in the ECF and they switched Wade on him in the middle games when George struggled. This happened in 2014 again when George outscored LeBron in the ECF.
and in 2008 he had Ben Wallace who was the 2nd best defender in the playoffs after DPOY Garnett.
      Before acquiring Ben Wallace
      - the 2008 Cavs allowed 98.2 ppg through 55 games
      - this would be ranked 11th in the league
In the 22 regular season games that Ben Wallace played with the Cavs
      - the 2008 Cavs allowed 91.6 ppg
      - this would be ranked 4th in the league
In the 2008 playoffs, with Ben Wallace starting every game
      - the 2008 Cavs allowed 87.8 ppg
      - this was the lowest ppg allowed by any team in the playoffs
If it wasn't for Ben Wallace's defense they would have been swept by Boston as LeBron played garbage shooting 35.5% with 5+ turnovers per game including shooting under 40% in all 3 of the Cavs wins in the 2008 ECSF, but instead it went 7 games.
Even in the 2015 Finals all of the Warriors players struggled below their averages against the Cavs defense, except Iguodala who LeBron was guarding - he had 20 ppg on 48% in the 3 games he started and doubled his season scoring average for the whole series. And the Cavs had 13 rpg from Tristan Thompson. So LeBron has had good defensive help throughout his career.
also LeBron hasn't consistently played both ends throughout his career. his defense is very up and down and more times than not it's been poor, so his defensive effort isn't much. He only played good defense in 1 out of 6 NBA Finals and often feasts on weaker matchups as well, and when he doesn't he gets lit up more often than not.

LeBron was outscored in the Finals by Tony Parker 2007, Jason Terry 2011, Kevin Durant 2012, all of whom increased their ppg and FG% and shot better than LeBron from the field.
In 2014, he was outplayed by Kawhi Leonard over the final 3 games, and Leonard shot 65% when guarded by LeBron for the overall series according to the article MVP Leonard Does it All
In Games 3-4-5, LeBron scored 51 of 81 points (63%) when losing by 15+, he did very little when the games were competitive. Leonard outscored him 44-30 in non-blowout situations for the last 3 games and also averaged more rebs, steals, blocks with a better Ast:TO ratio for the last 3 games.
He had 23.7 ppg on 69% for the last 3 games, shooting 14% higher than LeBron who had 27.0 ppg on 55%, but Lebron scored 63% of his points after getting blown out as opposed to Leonard only scoring 27 of his 71 points (38%) after winning by 15+ in Games 3-4-5
and in 2015 he allowed Andre Iguodala to double his scoring average on more efficient shooting, and had 20 ppg on 48% in the 3 games he started.
LeBron also allowed Barnes to shoot over 50% on LeBron despite Barnes shooting 37% for the overall series - so he was only efficient when he was guarded by LeBron.
2013 was the only good defensive Finals he had in 6 appearances. So LeBron's defense is much more hype and reputation than it is substance. This is also only the Finals series, not including earlier rounds when he was lot up
