  • "The perfect storm"
Kobe entered this game frustrated...by the loss vs Utah the previous week, by the last loss at Staples which saw Michael Redd scoring 45 on him. And a frustrated Kobe has never been good news for any opponent.
Once again, it was the case, as Kobe connected on 11 straight field goals at one point, on his way to one of his best offensives performances ever. Simply perfect in an historic 3rd quarter, the storm collapsed on the Jazz, recording 30pts on 9/9 shooting & 10/10 from the free throw line. Kobe finished the night with 52pts in three quarters, making 19 of 26 shots.

This was one of kobe's best game of the season. He took 26 shots but only missed 7 of them. Great performance. He just doesn't have enough games like this. This game was tight and the game he played against the spurs in san antonio where he caught the lob and dunked it on Tim Duncan. The lakers won on the road, he played within the offense, and he shot the ball really well.

This was vintage Kobe Bryant performance. Prior to this game Kobe was a little bit out of game shape because he missed all of preseason and he was still recovering from knee surgery. I remember at one point during the game where Steve Kerr mentioned that the scowl on Kobe's face was back. Let's just appreciate what Kobe now while he is still playing and reminisce about Michael's glory days. They are totally different and it just so happens that Kobe was the successor to Michael for the torch.

MJ ROX! KOBE ROX! the FANS ROX! i wish kobe was born 10 years earlier or MJ was born 10 years later... those two together in the league would be at least as huge if not bigger than the larry bird - magic johnson era...

I actually agree. MJ did acheive more with 12 years. The fact Kobe was on the bench his first few seasons has a bit to do with it, though. But I dont think anyone is actually skeptical enough to beleive Kobe is greater than MJ. But he's the closest we've ever seen to MJ, no doubt.

@utfanatic2000 additional additional side note on the 17-47 game.
I don't remember the game well, been many years, but I looked up stats as best I could.
Shaq was out with injury, as well as Rick Fox. Horry was shooting under 30%, Samaki, Fisher, George all shooting under 40%, these are for the season.
Kobe tried to get his guys involved earlier, they bricked or passed it back with under 5 on the clock most of the time.
Kobe chucking is what got them to OT, and they almost won the game...

@utfanatic2000 side note on that game, btw
Kobe went 8-13 in the 3rd quarter and got the Lakers back into the game. Yeah, he shot 36% overall, but there wasn't another Laker willing to step up.
Man those Laker teams sucked for awhile, tough to watch. The Dark Ages...

keep dreaming, jordan never put 81,never put 62 in three quarters, never put 61 on knicks, never put 4 straight 50 points, never put 13 straight 35 points, never put 12 3 pointers in a game, never put 9 straight 3 pointers, etc, etc, etc, etc!!!!!so don't tell me records that kobe maybe break someday, jordan didn't break these records for his whole career....so Kobe will be GOAT soon...accept the facts and stop hate....just witness!

@utfanatic2000 Meh, he's also the only player in the modern era to put up 80+ in a game, I'll take the good with the bad. Fair enough though.
I'm certain Jordan has had multiple games with 25+ missed shots. Can you find how many both MJ and Kobe had for their careers?

How is he better? Based on what. Have you seen MJ play. I've seen both of their whole careers. I've seen both play in person and MJ is the most graceful, creative and smooth baller I've ever seen. Period. Plus MJ has more rings, was a better leader, had more style, was way more popular. He was quicker, had more hang time, was smarter, and owns 69 nba records to kobe's 5. So how is kobe better? lol go lakers!!!

@cespin3823 Phil has the say to take him out whenever he wants to. Blame Kobe not Phil.
And his team mates were more than willing to pass the rock, they wanted to be part of a historic night. Besides, Kobe willed them back from down 18 at one point, single-handed. So, say what you will, but Kobe deserved that, and I was happy to see him go off after all he had done already in that game.
The game didn't get out of hand until about 6 minutes left, why not let him make some history?
