The Mk8 GTE is 242bhp, and as far as I'm aware it's mechanically almost identical to the Mk7/7.5 - though with a slightly larger capacity battery.
This is another reason to believe the marketing logic, they needed to sell GTI and more powerful next generation (probably they knew they will not bring up completely new engines)
The golf r and s3 had different set ups, the golf r was more racey in its set up compared the s3. The Leon was similar to the golf r. The s3 was more Conservative because they wanted the rs3 to be more sportier

When fine tuned, it can produce almost 300HP :D. The Start/Stop is annoying in GTE mode, which you can disable. But i tested that, when you do a launch it almost makes no difference when the engine is running or not. At least, it feels like its more quicker when the engine is off, and it launches with the electric motor first before the engine kicks in.
I must admit I’ve been using an electric leaf in recent weeks through work - although its useless for long runs (the charge stations are useless in the UK away from home - as they all use a different system / app / ‘fuel’ card) - locally its excellent - and the acceleration is silly for a school run / town car - I’m pretty sure that (with the know how) that 104bhp on the electric side of things can be extended way more than the petrol side of things.
Fitted some similar dynamic indicators to my mk2 Tiguan. Mine have an additional wire which connects to the puddle light in the mirror base. When you open or close the car in lower light conditions the dynamic indicators light up white for a short time. I agree they are for more visible in operation than the Orem ones.

I've watched 1,000's of RUclips videos and (obviously because I also own a White GTE) I can honestly say that this was the best I've seen. I'm excited about a UK company unlocking the full potential of the electric motor... just a bit concerned about having just taken out a 2yr warranty with VW, that my warranty might be invalidated... We'll see. Keep up the great work.

Can you fit the rear foot lights, I've got the kit but no idea how to fit them, also is it possible to swap the reflectors on the front doors for lights?

Great video and I'm leaning more and more towards the GTE.
The side indicators were the first things i did on my A6, X4, and jow Golf Makes such a difference.
Can't wait to see those creases uncreased and love the new indicators! So much brighter it's unreal, what a difference. Often wondered where the other 50 e-ponies went and you certainly explain it succinctly. How much torque will it be trying to plant with a remap I wonder?

Hi Paul, The quality of the picture from the web came was incredible I instantly recognised from past holidays the road around Poole which leads to the ferry crossing.
Paul, having done a technical analysis of the GTE (I own a Mk7), it's a bit more complicated than 54 hp + 150 hp.
The electric motor in GTE mode is derated about 25%. So around 75 hp. However, it provides full 75 hp boost at the lower range of power output, and as the engine reaches full power, it drops to the ~50 hp you observed.
This is to keep the gearbox torque under 350Nm - there is a third clutch that fits around the electric motor which is used to engage and disengage the engine.
Exceed the torque rating of this clutch at your peril, as it will require a HV technician and experienced gearbox engineer to replace. It will not be as easy as the DSG clutches to change (they are not easy as it is but at least some people have done it.)
Thanks for that Thomas, the companies that I have been working with have all got GTE research models as I had the same concerns, these cars have done several thousand miles, and they have taken the experiences and apply them to the products they sell.

Hi Paul, another top video,the dash cam looks brilliant,no use for the cigarette lighter plug is very handy.plug into the obd and it works.the indicator light for the door mirrors are alot better and more visible.and matches the rear lights.

Nice video..! How visible are the mirror indicators now from the rear (a driver who is next / behind you, e.g in your blind spot)..? That’s the main reason why indicators are there instead of fenders/wings as they were before (higher up and in light of sight of approaching cars from your side). Also, you should not pull the wire across the A pillars which houses the curtain airbags. Go down along the windscreen and back down the edge of dash instead. Good luck!
Hi, did you ever figure out a way to enable electric engine to be at full power when on GTE mode?
I am thankful to you Paul for the weekly feed but wish it was more often but hey a fan can only hope. Recommendation for the next project should be an Audi A3 S-Line Sportback 2Lt Diesel 8V 2015 from the brink of the past to the dawn of the future (the full shebang) I maybe a bit biased but that's my hope and I am sure all your fans will agree ahahah lets finish this Golf as soon as. Witch dutch tuners are there to tune the gte? Im from the netherlands and looking for the best tuner. Now a days you can tune your car almost on any corner. Greetings from the netherlands!

In Holland there is someone who tuned the GTE to > 300hp. Electric engine to full and another turbo.
He has a youtube channel presenting the car.
There might be a battery issue involved.
Mine cuts "full electric" mode when uphill but the battery is already 7 years old so there might be only marketing.
Anyways the handling is horrible on this things...because of the rear added weight. I changed the suspension not long ago but it does not seem to be much better. The front wheels spin like crazy when in gte mode (it would be nice to be able to have 4x4 with it).

All that tech in the GTE and you still have to fit an aftermarket dashcam.

Paul what is the law around disabling the stop/start function. I thought this has an impact on emissions so makes illegal to tamper with it although as most cars have a manual off button I am not sure how that works.
There is no law for turning off stop start

Watch running cables down an A piller if the car has side impact airbags or an air curtin airbag system becuse if you cross over the deploy path your wire could pull out or stop the safty restraint device from properly deploying making it useless. You want to run the wire close to the windshild and behind to tethering cords. And that's a pro install.
Ps dont poke the bag or unplug any wires.

As usual, very interesting and informative. Those sequencing lndicators really do add to the safety factor of any manoeuvre and the camera is a BIG, BIG MUST. Roll on, the next video.

I used Tuning Service Huizen but I did a stage two tune with a down pipe and ethanol e40 mix got 240 whp from motor and unlocked electric motor 100hp so 340 all up I think the stage one is 280

same here, if someone in the UK can do it competently, there's a few potential customers out there.
The Golf R exists because of VW motorsport heritage, it can find its roots in the Original MK2 Rallye Golf G60, the 4 wheel drive boxed arch supercharged golf, 5000 built at the VW motorsport plant in Belgium for motorsport homologation in 1989
The R Symbol is from that heritage, updated in the 00’s to VW Racing
Everything VW and Audi do is based on a heritage lineage, tartan seats, golf ball gear knob, edition cars etc etc

Most Mk8 R models in the UK that have been dyno'd indicate around 340 BHP is being produced as stock. Of course all Golfs are also capable of being tuned to produce more power. (even the D variants 😂)
and all golf gte has 225-235 bhp stock
they have 204bhp on papir but on dyno they have 225-235bhp stock

I have a A3 8v with the EA211 CoD engine. 148bhp is enough as the car can't handle it.
If you have a 104bhp Electric motor you would want to make full use of it and the torque that it gives you! Nevermind Diesel gate, this is Electric Gate!

You don't calculate total bhp like that. No manufacturer does it like that where they just add the values together for the total bhp.
its true, they dont, its peak power, however, in this instance peak power for the electric motor is in GTE mode is 54 BHP, the petrol engine can actually produce 165 BHP and when peak power is reached the EM drops around 9 bhp
Just FYI: All you say is correct for an MK7 Golf GTE. With the introduction of the MK8 there are two PHEV-Variants: A "civilian" version with standard styling with 204bhp and the new GTE with 245bhp. This is now the same as the standard MK8 GTI. Both use the same drivetrain with the new lower tier having the same software limitations as the MK7 GTE. On that note: Your thumbnail is a bit missleading, since that GTE-secret does not rally apply to the MK8 GTE (at least not to the full extent as with the MK7) 😜
As far as I know the MK7 GTE was never really intended to be a real performance model but just the hybrid variant of the standard Golf. It just got the styling to be a bit more fancy and special.
For me from now on, the VW Golf GTI will forever be known as the VW Golf Mourinho!!!
I knew about the Netherlands tune, I was interested in the gte, but where in the uk do they tune it for the extra 50bhp from the electric motor in the UK, and And what would be the initial outlay

Had one try my Old ST220 Mondeo 220bhp but she was an old girl 05 plate. This was a 15plate 10 years younger than my mondeo, I spotted him in my mirror acting a clown jumping lanes . I didn’t know anything about them I saw E in the GT thought it was economy version or all electric . Like Nissan Leaf electric . The idiot cut the car in front of me and that car moved to middle lane after , they went to Boot it , but went nowhere so they backed to 70mph I noticed they were doing something
Anyway they Booted again , this time they were going . I managed to stick with them I was prolly drafting off of them as I was drawing them in. I tried to undertake in the middle lane but a car moved from lane 1 into lane 2, so I had to lift off and get back in behind the GTE, and from them to 140 that gap stayed the same by 140 I was Pulling him in again but we both had to back off as we’d caught up to slower traffic, After this little sprint they didn’t want to play anymore so I guessed they’d used up their battery. But it surprised me the Mondeo ST was a 3.0 litre .

off the electric engine. When in electric mode it produces 90HP. In GTE mode (Sport mode) it only puts out ~50HP. It just restricts the amp delivery to the electric engine.

No since the it will be working in conjunction with the petrol motor. when driving in pure electric mode, the motor runs at the full 100BHP

Sorry to burst the Bubble but that is not why it is rated 204hp it is because the e-motor and the petrol engine produce there peak hp at different rpm meaning that the petrol engine may make 150 at say 5200rpm but at the same time the e-motor is geared at a higher ratio so will be at 10000+rpm I would imagine well past its peak hp .
I use to think this, but the tuners I have been working with who have GTE test cars have shown me the map they apply and where the power increase comes from and it is from the electric motor
VW Assist Braking and more....Great Video on the Dash Cam....But so hate the way that VW and others are going with Assisted Braking and Assist this as Assist that but does not Assist our pocket with apox £5K going on top of the prices with Online Connected Vehicles. Until you can opt out of these features when ordering new they have lost me as a 20 year VW customer to buy New again! keep with my older vehicle with out the junk. I want to drive not the VW Computer as VW have a law suite in the US against them on Assisted Braking. Which i have had problem that slams on the Brakes! with along with Stop/Start that won't re-start the vehicle and leaves you Dead in the Road!
