If you pop it in a muslin cloth before putting in the ice water you can then squeeze and mould the butter much easier as it releases more butter milk and firms up …much easier

As a child in the 50's my husband recalls they saved cream from top of the milk, in the days before it was all homogenised. It was put into a jar and all 5 kids took turns in shaking the jar till a ball of butter appeared. Frugal times!

I make butter in a deep bowl and use an electric hand held mixer. I scrape the sides down a few times and keep going until the cream has separated into a firm mass and a liquid Rinse the butter under cold running water and then add course sea salt. The butter and buttermilk freeze well and buttermilk scones are delicious.

Yup you needed to churn longer and add a pinch of salt. It's ready when it becomes a solid yellowish ball. I suspect you needed to open it, scrape the sides and keep churning. Awesome effort though 🎉❤

Salt is optional but I agree with churning longer. That looked like whipped cream rather than butter. Don't use time, go by consistency. The whey should be very watery.

Butter making. Forget the timer. You will know when you have reached the butter stage. You begin agitating the cream, and it seems to stay cream for aaaaages, then all of a sudden the magic begins to happen - it goes to a cottage cheese appearance, then it turns into light golden butter and watery buttermilk. Keep stirring it until the blob of butter is in 1 solid lump. You were almost there!

    • @SuzanneU

You have to churn the cream until its a yellow ball, then pour off the buttermilk. Add a few ice cubes and salt to taste once you've removed the buttermilk and mould to shape. I was the butter maker on our farm when I was a child, a chore I did not enjoy as my arms used to get so sore.

It was put in a pot, and then we just shook it for ages and ages, and we did make butter! I make butter using cream in the Kilner churn more to prevent wasting cream I don’t need, and to amuse the grandchildren. Definitely use a bit more cream in the churn and churn until it is yellow like others have said. There is a clear separation to be seen then. The buttermilk is also good for using when making scones and the butter is great with homemade jam. 😉 I love foraging for crab apples and elderberries as well as other hedgerow fruits. Don’t give up yet!

I’ve made butter, bread, sausages and cheese. You need to churn until the cream gets thick through the whipped cream stage and then it will separate dramatically into butter and buttermilk. It’s obvious when it happens and you can’t mistake it. Great fun. With sausages you can get just the flavour you want. The soft cheeses are easy by hand, Camembert, Stilton, halloumi, mozarrella.

I have made my own butter using the churn and also just shaking it in a lidded jar. Either way you need to ‘churn’ it for a lot longer than the 10 minutes they said. It will form a ball and be quite a work out. It is satisfying.

  • @orquideasehistoriasdefrega8742
    @orquideasehistoriasdefrega8742 3 месяца назад +6

Good effort, I will certainly say that! Like someone already said it needed to be churned longer so it’s pretty solid. And yes it needs a bit of salt. The color really gives away the time when it’s ready, yellowish. You can add finely minced herbs to your butter for extra flavor.
The fridge on the counter is a great idea! It will save your back!!! You are making that cottage a very appealing and cozy home. As to the microwave , I myself have done away with it, it’s not the best , health wise, anyway. I haven’t needed it. I like the half veg stand idea, you can make that work. Such a pleasure “visiting “ you! Take care dear boy!

45 toilet rolls ? And you've arranged to have these delivered every month? Ignoring February, there's only 30 or 31 days in a month, so you're going to use one and a half toilet rolls every day ? You'll soon be over-run with loo rolls - will need to buy another shed just to house them in 😁

We use an electric mixer to make our butter. Not as fun as what you have. The cream will whip up quicker if it is cold. With the electric whisk, the cream will suddenly separate and leave the hard butter clinging to the whisk. We don't put it in water. Add a little salt and shape into the butter dish. I think you need to whisk more until you have a more solid mass

  • @justine2488
    @justine2488 3 месяца назад +2

I've made butter a few times. Yes I think it needed churning longer. After it's thickened it develops the texture of scrambled eggs. The buttermilk starts separating on its own and then it's ready. After squeezing out the buttermilk, wash is a few times in cold water to get as much of the buttermilk out as possible (otherwise it goes rancid quickly). Add a pinch of salt if you want It's fun but not very cost effective.

I’ve got the Kilner butter churn and it takes a lot longer than the ten minutes they state and a lot of elbow grease 😂 Don’t give up, have another go and rinse a few times in the water and squeeze it to get every bit water/ buttermilk out or it will go rancid very quickly. It’s a bit of a faff until you’ve got the hang of it then it doesn’t feel like it takes so long and is quite therapeutic to make and tastes so good- especially if you’re getting farm cream 😋
TIP: To make life easier get a very fine sieve or some muslin cloth to strain the buttermilk from the butter. The muslin is also good to squeeze and shape the butter 😊

All recipes has a recipe for butter. Shaking or whipping it manually is hard. Too bad one can't get it shaken up at the paint store. Anyway, I found a recipe in Allrecipes: pour 2 cups of heavy cream, 1/4 tsp salt(optional) into a blender/food processor. Process on high for 10 minutes., strain off liquid into a bowl, press on it to further strain the liquid into the bowl. put it into a plastic container, refrigerate and enjoy, hopefully. I am going to try it out. My grandparents used to churn butter, but i was too young to take in the details.

Hi Sean, I think your kitchen looks great now!
Yes that was me who said about using vinegar on the mould but only use WHITE vinegar not the brown stuff. What you do is put some in a spray bottle neat not watered down. Spray the white vinegar on the mould and leave it on for an hour then use a brush to remove the mould with warm water. The vinegar kills the mould but if it comes back do it again another day. Do have a window open though because of the vinegar fumes! We found some mould in one of our rooms and this is what I had to do. It does work. Also have the kitchen window open when you can obviously will help when you're cooking to keep the room ventilated. You can buy portable dehumidifier but we've had limited success with that! Getting an extractor fan fitted in your kitchen would be good but I don't know how expensive that would be. Hope that helps you.
Happy Birthday again btw - your cake looked great! 👍 Whoever made it was very talented! 🙂

I’ve got to say Sean that’s the funniest video I’ve ever watched, I’m on my third view and still laughing out loud, can’t believe you got that cream out of the cold water pan with a straight face😂🎉 just so good.

This is what I do. I pour the double cream into a jug. I whisk using a mini hand whisk. Takes a good while ! The butter will separate from the buttermilk and you will be able to tell the difference. Buttermilk will be watery and butter will be totally like butter not looking like cream. Pour the liquid out and keep whisking. More liquid will separate. Keep pouring it out until all you have left looks like butter. Rinse it with cold water. Add a bit of salt and shape. Paddles not needed unless you make a ton of it.

Churn it for a bit longer add a touch of salt. Put it in a muslin cloth tie up the ends. Put a wooden spoon through the end of string over the pan a squeeze the liquid out then finger crossed you can shape into butter 😊👍🏻

Veg keeps better in the fridge if you have room for at least some of it. The table should go out of the kitchen, its not worth the space it takes up, it a nice little table for somewhere else, a basket or similar for veg.

For easy butter put your cream in your bullet .....when it turns to butter it should stick to sides...take bullet it off scrape down and mix a little more leave it in bullet, but dump off butter milk, let it set upside down to drain...squish it all down to bottom and drain more....then scrape out the bullet put solids into ice water collect and there you have it. You can store in a small jar with a lid. Or a plastic container. If you like you can add salt.....or make garlic butter.

Sean next time use your electric mixer, it is faster and you must mix longer. And you need cheese cloth. I make my own laundry detergent, body soap, hair soap, canning, and it dies save alot of money and no chemicals.

A chest freezer sounds like a good idea, but it might increase your electric bill substantially. Also, it might need its own dedicated circuit on your electric panel. (I am not an electrician.) The butter looked good.

I use an electric hand mixer so make a larger quantity. You possibly could have churned a little longer, once the buttermilk separates I put into muslin and squeeze all fluid out then I fill saved ramekins.

Vegetables keep better in the fridge, so you could loose the rack totally. Put the microwave back and steam all your veggies that you steam in microwave steaming bags, then you can loose the steamer. They taste lovely too. Kitchens looking great.
Sorry sounding bossy🤔but enjoying you sorting out your kitchen, mines half the size of yours, so space is at a premium. So have an understanding of what works best.

In the 1940's, I remember. My Father making butter, using a sweet jar and a towel to catch any leaks. We were surrounded by farms, and my great aunt who was a farmer regularly sent us. A dressed fowl through the post.

I have made butter loads of times. You should have kept churning. You will be able to tell when it's ready because there will be much more buttermilk and there will also be quite a solid mass, which is the butter. You didn't need to buy that jar churner either. I mostly use a hand whisk, but sometimes I use a food mixer with a whisk attachment. You use ice cold water to wash off the remaining buttermilk (just massage the buttermilk out of the butter in the water). I hope this helps, mate.

Ive got a great drainer to go on a worksurface by i think it might have been Simplehuman but there is no label or mark on it and it has a draining spout that goes into the sink or if not the name Jacob rings a bell. Its fab. Butter pats. To pat your butter and some had pretty marks carved in to press onto your butter afterwards.

Yes I make my own butter using the Kilner churn and my own bread 🍞 too. If you are looking for alternative grain flours Doves Farm have a very good range. It’s much better making your own than shop bought. I managed to find some vintage terracotta butter stamps in a charity shop along with 2 wooden butter paddles to shape the butter into a block. I use the buttermilk that you separate when I’m making scones. 👌 If you are interested in eating food with pro biopics for a healthy stomach you can get a Kilner fermenting set of 2 jars and glass weights to make fermented veg. That way you could use the cabbage etc. from your allotment. I also dehydrate some surplus veg and fruit for the winter months as well as making jams and chutneys- great fun!

That was a fine first attempt at making butter. It goes to whipped cream first and then you keep going until you get that nice yellowish creamy butter. Oh the buttermilk is excellent for making pancakes, it is scrumptious!

Hi Sean, watching you lift that fridge with everything in it 🫣! As a single person with a weak back, I've had to lift big awkward things. I've rocked them from lower to higher supports, and or jacked them up adding piles of books, boxes and tables under them. Takes a while and some thought but didn't want to make that embarrassing phone call! 😳😖.
