Mr. Greene and Mr. Sanderson are sophisticated men of nerd culture. Excuse me. Mr. Green and Mr. Sanderson are a sophisticated goblin and man, respectively, of nerd culture.
Imagine just being a cute little goblin that wants to talk about books and then you have a personal relationship with Brandon Sanderson. WHAT?? Also would love for us to get an interview with Brando every year, maybe a month after the State of Sanderson so Daniel can process the news and provide great questions like he always does
Really appreciated his comments on amazon, monopolies, and the focus on bestsellers. I have also noticed that the midlister is slowly dissapearing from the industry. The people who never top the lists but have over the years built an audience that just keeps them afloat. That's getting harder and harder these days. All the money is concentrating at the top. It's worrying to say the least.
I haven't read half of Sanderson's work yet, but he's easily my favorite author. Yeah, because his books are consistently good, but really mostly like him because he's so generous to his audience. I'm usually not interested in hero worship, but I'd at least like to shake his hand someday.
I’m with you in the hero worship. Sanderson is probably the only author that I would really care to have him personally sign a book and for me to meet.
Yeah he gives so much more than his books. The lectures, the fan engagement with signing streams, the podcast with Dan Wells, etc. Even before youtube he did Writing Excuses for years. He's one of those authors that you can get something out of even if you don't like his books.
Expecting attention =/= expecting to make the most funded +50% and near most (65% of #1 spot) backed kickstarter of all time. The sheer attention from the $30+ million figure alone is likely to get at least one Cosmere film or TV adaptation green lit or fast tracked into production, or at the very least something like Reckoners to gauge wider public interest in his mojo.
I find it amazing how good Daniel can be as an interviewer. Some times you see interviews where the interviewer doesn`t seem to know what to ask or how to make the talk flow, and you can do it amazingly “easly”. Well done, good sir. Sanderson’s take on publishers and bookstores is so good to hear and now that we have big authors knowing the importance of those. Amazing video!!
The worst is when the interviewer asks a leading question, then talks over the guest and just makes the whole conversation about herself. Daniel asks a relevant, thought-provoking question, and then he SHUTS UP and lets the interesting guest just speak about the topic. Bravo!
@@Isoquant Agree agree agree. You said exactly what I was thinking. Although to be fair Sanderson is gifted at answering every question posed to him with a well thought out mini-lecture! Don't get me wrong - I hang on his every word and thoroughly enjoy listening to him, but the guy does not give short answers.
What I learned to love in Sanderson is not only his super transparency, it's also his honest awareness he has to the fact that his success isn't 100% his. The appreciation he speaks about to "bookstore workers who shared my books", to the fan base, his openness to parody (a lot of "top guns" are too up the ego trip to appreciate parodies), even the way he worries about new authors, which all come very genuine from him. He *remembers* the time before breaking out, he 8remembers* the journey, and all the people who were part of it. That's what makes him a great PERSON, in my opinion, not just a great author.
I'm glad he mentioned his traditional publishers and that he told them about this kickstarter ahead of time. The whole kickstarter thing he did seems to have rejuvenated the Sanderson Fandom, and that is going to be good news for his traditional publishers as well.

Daniel normally has too much energy for my liking, but as an interviewer he does a stellar job. Always let’s the guests speak uninterrupted - I tip my hat to you sir.
While I've never been diagnosed with insomnia I often struggle staying or falling asleep. One of my methods of passing that time in my head is telling myself a story. It's really cool to hear Brandon does that too. also great interview Daniel the questions were very interesting and the replies very insightful.
Brandon Sanderson really has hit a very specific niche of the internet, and I'm all about it. He manages to remain wholesome and respectful while engaging everyone equally, and being strong to his convictions and point of view. All while remaining very active in his own career. It really is something special.
I’ve never read a Sanderson book and traditionally I find myself preferring Sci-Fi to Fantasy, but the Kickstarter announcement, success, and Daniel’s general enthusiasm about it has given me a Sanderson bug. I am setting out to read Sanderson’s books in the very near future. I was already planning to blind buy support the kickstarter at the end of the month but that description he gave for Secret Project #2 is AMAZING and is worth me spending the money for it alone.
You should check out the Skyward series if you're more Sci-fi inclined. Brandon also has some novellas out like 'Legion' and 'Snapshot' that are sci-fi & thrillers. He's got a lil bit of everything for everyone.
If you're into superhero sci-fi and okay with YA, he also did the Reckoners series, which has some interesting concepts. It's not everyone's favorite (and the ending was pretty lacking IMO), but might be worth checking out.
I love how much more comfortable you have gottentalking to Brandon. I remember how big a deal it was the first time you had him on and you guys seem to at ease talking now.
And when I grow old, I would be sitting in my room re-reading Sanderson's books, with an entire wall dedicated for placates with the shots from films catching the moment Sanderson's character dying in those films. That will be awesome!

This is a great interview; hearing Brandon Sanderson speak on the issues with traditional publishing and the (almost) lack of competition of Amazon, was great! I hope publishers find what he's been saying (apparently for years!) compelling.
I just saw he had this Kickstarter yesterday after recently starting his books, I'm only three in so far. It's over 45M... couldn't have happened to a better author, he seems so kind and fun.
Bravo on a series of excellent questions, Mr. Greene! And I am so proud to hear Sanderson both heartily defend bookstores and stand up against the current problems in publishing. (Book twitter gives me anxiety.)
Besides one day of actually having a copy of these stories in my hand, I think I'm most excited about thinking of the interest in the Cosmere that is being generated in Hollywood or various production companies by his Kickstarter success.
He's actually commented about this on reddit! "This is a big point that I think is really relevant. I've been holding out on adaptations, lately, until I can be absolutely certain the deal I'm getting gives me a lot of creative influence and power. Maybe not final cut, but more power than your average author--and certain assurances about what can't be changed narratively. One of the goals for this kickstarter was, secretly, to make Hollywood pay attention. I had no idea how far we'd go, but what has happened here WILL make things over there easier--and will influence the strength of my negotiating position."
