I don't know why but for me my favorite has always been Tolkien's Ents. They are just absolutely perfect. Not too whacky but yet they also feel so enchanting and mysterious. I also love their culture of "Not being hasty" and the deep tragedy of them not being able to find the ent wives.
I love the concept of Goblin Slayer, where the author really delves into the trouble goblins can present if left unchecked, which they often are because of their cannon-fodder status. Because they aren't deemed worth the effort of more seasoned adventurers, it's often newer, misguided adventurers that try to take them on subsequently and fall victim to the gobbo's merciless brutality. It's also nice how the author makes a point of the fact that, sure, slaying a dragon might be difficult and gain you a lot of prestige, but rooting out the nest of goblins that's terrorizing a local farmstead is what's actually beneficial to the average person of that setting as far as their day-to-day life is concerned. There's more to it than that, of course, but it does a great job of reflecting on the hypocrisy and narcissisms inherent to the traditional idea of 'adventuring' in fantasy settings.
My argument against Frankenstein's Monster being a zombie: he was never human. He was made out of an amalgamation of parts, some not even from originally living creatures. He was also made specifically out of larger parts to make him easier to assemble, and was much, much larger than a human. Also, he was intelligent and had a lot of human traits. The reason he was scary was almost entirely based off of his looks, and his status as a constant social outcast drove him to be monstrous more than any innate nature.
His innate nature is debatable, we only have his word for it that he was good originally and he is shown to be capable of lies. He has every reason to try and make Frankenstain think his kind are good by nature. And even if we believe that his account is accurate, by his own words he turns evil fairly quickly and his response is disproportional. In return for being feared and shunned he resorts to murder and contemplates genocide, not something you would expect from someone who was innately good.
And altho most modern zombies no longer follow this history, zombies are particularly connected to Haitian culture and voodoo. There must be an animating power, usually magic, but now more commonly scientific like a virus, that transforms the human mind and body into a non-living, hollow, now usually violent creature. Frankenstein was not robbed of agency, individuality or life. He was brought to life. His dread is being brought unwillingly into existence, rather than the loss of self.
LOL Daniel's "Oh, what's this, touch it, it's destroyed, oh well, move on" is SO perfect! Definitely how Krakens should be portrayed! Thanks so much for this, Brandon and Daniel! This was highly entertaining!

I like them, but I do think that they've been done very...strangely. "Major" spoilers are marked for something that, to me, was obvious from pretty much page one (I say this as someone reading the series for the first time right now). The show tries to hide the reveal as long as possible, but in the book it was pretty obvious to anyone with even _vague_ awareness of literary tropes. And then some talk about ogier later on that doesn't get a spoiler warning _at all,_ but which I would have thought was the biggest spoiler of all.

You gotta respect Brandon´s ABSOLUTE POWER MOVE to be barefeet in front of Daniel like: "Yeah boy you get to gaze at my feet for an entire hour and a half. Think you´ve got what it takes to be an author? Well this is what it takes. To stare at feet"
@@ChristmasLore Yes I know. That´s why I said I don´t think he has ever tried to lick his boots. As a reviewer Daniel tends to be fairly imparcial and never fudged a review to make it seem like a better book tha what he thought it was just because it was a Brandon book. I was making a joke that if he did start doing that now Brandon doesn´t have boots so... do you really don´t get jokes?
@@ChBrahm , I do get jokes. I just don't think, in this instance, that's all it is. Not speaking about Daniel's reviews quality (or lack of), but at this point in time, there are a lot of professional opportunities revolving about adaptations (WOT, Mistborns, etc.). After this meeting, on the timeline, Daniel did get the Official Prime podcast for WOT (with Dusty Wheel- and some others).
Important difference there. Goblins are with few exceptions, cannon fodder just there to fill out the ranks, while zombies (in the way that Sanderson describes them) is more of a psychological terror of getting turned by former loved ones.
I guess you won't ever read this on an older video like this one Brandon, but the scene with Talmanes had me going back to it several times and relistening to it, because I just couldn't get enough of the dry humor even in the face of death. I even told some friends who had nothing to do with WoT about this sequence, which I usually don't because I know I can't do them justice. Absolutely amazing work.
A zombie is a term we use for mindless undead creatures that crave human flesh. That one aspect is what sets them apart from their undead cousins, the vampires. Adam or Frankenstein's monster is an intellectual. I think that's a very solid argument against Daniel's thesis.
About being out on the open sea. When I was 16, I sailed across the Atlantic. It took about 12 days, on 10 of them we didn't see a single boat or anything apart from the unbroken horizon. I felt so small. I had the sensation of being inside a snow globe, my small area of sea and the sky above. What has stuck with me is how it affected my sense of reality, that there was so little to go that anything could be possible. I thought many times that it wouldn't even surprise me if a giant sea serpent or leviathan showed up. And swimming in the sea next to the ship, looking down and feeling that there is an infinity of water below you, where there could be anything. They are very inspiring experiences
Brandon: "I don't want to have people be afraid of the setting" Fans: "No, you just want us to cry, curl up into a fetal position, try not to cry, then cry a lot more" Also Fans: "NEXT BOOK WHEN?!?!?!"
Minor detail, but thank you so much for including the spoiler countdown and skip point! It's clear, convenient, and just that small extra effort to improve the experience of an untold number of new fans.
So happy for Dan.. been subbed to him for years now he’s so genuine and knows his stuff. So cool to see him and the goat 🐐 (right now) becoming friends.. dare I say… equals?!? Keep it up gentlemen!! Love it
I don't know if it just me, but I don't get scared or creeped out when I look up at the sky and realise I am just floating on a rock, or when I think about stranded alone in the ocean, rather, it fills me with wonder and appreciation for the universe, and creation itself.
This was a true meeting of the creative minds. I have a deep respect for each of these guys, and I hope Brandon has Daniel on again for impromptu conversation periodically, or even regularly. The insights gained from each are worth the time and attention!
Ugarls from eragon are my favorite type of bad-guy-monster-race because they start put like evil orcs that everyone hates, but the evolve and become more personable and we have to learn to accept their culture at the same time as eragon does. Beautifully done

I would’ve included genies/djinn (or their Irish counterparts leprechauns, or Jordan’s Aelfinn/Eelfinn.versions). The ways they can interpret and grant wishes wih unintended consequences offer endless possibilities.
Interesting points about a Dybbuk is that it's a soul who was so wicked, it wasn't even allowed into hell, so is forced to wander for eternity while being beaten by angels, who only stop on the Sabbath or if it escapes through possesing a body, something that i can only do if that person it chooses to posses makes himself unintentionally available through committing a sin.

@@Rennies-World Hah :) Yeah, it's worth checking out. A very underrated early-2000s flick... and the dragons look surprisingly cool.
Daniel: I would love what happened to the Ogier
Brandon: *Book Writing Mode*
My favorite author and favorite book tuber. Awesome 😎
I know Daniel usually comes across as a bit of a goofball on his channel, but i love hearing him talk about fantasy like this. He’s so eloquent and passionate about the subject, really makes me as an aspiring writer think about things differently
Two of my favourite You Tubers together, this is the thing I needed to begin my weekend after a stressful week!!!!!!
The crossover we didnt ask for but was given to us!
This was interesting and fun! Love this duo
Around when everything was a step closer to getting an interview with Brandon and two years later Daniel is just hanging out on his channel in person discussing dragons
I never thought this hard about why I like the creatures that I like, but I feel like you hit the nail on the head
Brandon out here living life. The man has Sonic ice in a glass of water, like its no big deal.
Sonic ice?🤔
🤣
You can get ice makers that make it. They are around $400.
@@ChristmasLore Its a type of chewable ice and doesn't melt as quick
@@OnixMint , How do you produce it?🤔
I love this video so much! My 2 favorite Book nerds having a conversation... makes you want to cry a little
I *love* the fact the feet were blurred
I was like am i blind or something...
Why the blurred..

2 of my favourite people chatting in the same room. Awesomeness
You gotta respect Brandon´s ABSOLUTE POWER MOVE to be barefeet in front of Daniel like:
"Yeah boy you get to gaze at my feet for an entire hour and a half. Think you´ve got what it takes to be an author? Well this is what it takes. To stare at feet"
Feels like " you wanted to lick my boots? Well, daring you to even try, now..."😜
@@ChristmasLore In all honesty I don´t think Daniel ever licked his boots... but it would be a good way to start xD
@@ChBrahm , it s an expression in french, lecher les bottes à quelqu'un (sucking up to someone in order to obtain a favor)😉
Love this kind of debate from people who genuinely take it seriously.
Brandon Sanderson: "I didn't put any cannon fodder on my list."
A few minutes later: "I put zombies on my list."
If Brandon finds the water to be terrifying he should give "Son of the Black Sword" a shot, it's a major theme in it.
Son of the Black Sword is great, and has become one of my favorite fantasy series in recent memory.
I am terrified of the open abyss of water and I am now very interested in reading this one, thank you!
@@ryanbourbeau3078 I should rephrase that and say it is a major underlying theme. It is where the evil comes from and is considered unclean.
@@KakashiYuy I very much like that sound of that thanks for the info!
I 100% agree about the sand worms! They are so rad. Also love the foot blur.
Balrogs. One of fantasy's most original and incredible creations.
That was a delight to watch. Thank you.
Brandon: "I don't want to have people be afraid of the setting"
Fans: "No, you just want us to cry, curl up into a fetal position, try not to cry, then cry a lot more"
Also Fans: "NEXT BOOK WHEN?!?!?!"
Mistborn series spoilers
[cries in Mistborn every time]
Fans: NEXT BOOK WHEN???
Brandon: *points at website progress bars*
This is a great era to be a fantasy fan.
@@zoe8880 his recent announcement brings a new level of humor to this.
I really enjoyed this. A great conversation.
No way! Congrats Daniel on getting to do this! I never imagined something like this would happen, but I'm glad it did!
Minor detail, but thank you so much for including the spoiler countdown and skip point! It's clear, convenient, and just that small extra effort to improve the experience of an untold number of new fans.
I'd love to see more of Daniel on this channel. Maybe as a guest on the podcast. Idk maybe that's too many Dan's 🤣
It's usually called existential dread for a reason...
I wouldn’t pick them as my favorite, but I couldn’t agree you more on how our perspective of the Urgarls changed.
Brandon is my favorite author of all time, bar none. Read every one of his books and every time they continue to amaze. All but the evil librarians, haven’t read that. Even the Rhythmatist was awesome. Thanks Brandon…… Lucky ass Daniel, damn. Moving up in the world
Loved the discussion. BTW The dybbuk is pronounced Di - Buk, and as Daniel said, it's very well known in Jewish folklore
Thank you both for doing this, very much enjoyed the discussion and I LOVE cross over collabs. :)
No way you and Daniel are back together 🙌🏻😮💨
Love seeing you two together! Great comfortable conversation!!’
