I just shared my own personal copy of Land of Hope & Glory on my Facebook page, i think EVERYONE needs to watch it at least once, as there is no greater motivation to go vegan and stay vegan than to actually "see" what these animals are forced to endure.

Yeah except this dude is ignoring that there’s something else called PASTURE-RAISED. Yes “free range” and “cage free” are meaningless, but pasture-raised is objectively different and it’s a real difference where the animals are happy in healthy.

when i was 8, there was a girl in my class who found out that the beef we ate at school was the cows that lived down the road from her that she had meat and had an attachment to. people in our class teased her, including me, about it and she got angry and slapped me. she wasnt vegetarian. however i regretted it so much and apologised to her, and 4 months later i was vegetarian (i am now vegan) and she teased me by eating meat and rubbing it in my face at lunch. idk just thought that was an interesting story as it made a big difference to her perspective on animal welfare when she found out. she still eats meat and is horrible about veganism.

      @angelluis762 6 лет назад +6

Yes there is. Name the Trait is not hard at all to debunk. Let me preface this by saying whether you’re a carnist or vegan that there is some hypothetical you must accept to justify your diet/lifestyle, for carnist it’s whatever trait they named and for vegans it’s accepting a hypothetical where they are reduced to the level of that of bugs and small animals since combines kill both of those in plant production. Ok so the trait is higher sentience and yes I would be willing to be killed if you lowered my sentience and it’s a yes to any question down the line. If you’re vegan and think I’m a psycho you’re a hypocrite because you are accepting a hypothetical where humans are gettting killed regardless. I would love to hear all possible rebuttals but I know there aren’t any. Good Luck!

Thanks for mentioning how you too used to be taken in by "humane" labels. I was too, in the past. I had this notion that hens were allowed to wander uncrowded over acres of grass like the pet hens I grew up with (who incidentally all were allowed to die of old age). The thing is, even those hens hated it and would bite when they were trying to sit on their precious egg and the person they trusted to feed and pet them (me) came with the basket and stole their unborn child. Even the kindest exploitation is still exploitation!

  • @livestockfactchecking1869

I suggest taking the time to look up Temple Grandin, and listen to what she has to say. She is an incredible woman that has done everything she can do to make sure processing livestock and animals is humane. She has a way of empathizing with animals, she can really understand what they are feeling. I have raised livestock all my life, and when slaughtering the animals are euthanized. There are many signs to look for if the animal is still alive and feeling, if this is the case, everything is shut down and major investigations occur. We do care about our animals, but they are also a great source of protein. I would rather see animal products than have starving people due to lack of protein and the overuse and deforestation for farmland.

Could the exploitation of animals be justified if we improved their welfare to a point where their lives were net pleasure? Maybe the current suffering of animals could even be justified since the pleasure of the animals with net pleasure might outweigh the suffering of the animals with net suffering when thinking long-term?

There are some people who are completely un-empathetic. They simply don't care about animals in the slightest. Explaining how animal agriculture harms the earth which ultimately hurts us, and hurts other humans will be more effective for those people. We have to tackle it from all sides. Some people respond better to something like Ask Yourself who tries to use logical reasoning and does NOT use emotional arguments. It's sad that there are people who are so cruel but we have to win them over somehow.

As to your point directly, yes, I call that understanding and then targeting the audience. I've done various forms of educational outreach over the 26 years I've been active and I've used different angles based on the audience (or even individual) I encounter.
I'm sure you'd agree that if you establish an ongoing communication with someone (more than just a 1 line response or 30 second verbal dialogue, it can be very effective to try to make it clear to the receiver of your info, that you do understand where they are coming from (if you do) being that at one time you thought of animals in the same ways as they or most people do. As you know, most people think that vegans are people that grew up completely different than everyone else....when in reality, 99.99999% of vegans grew up just like everyone else....believing the same things about animals.

Whether an animal lives in nature, or a very good farm (which are rare), there are pro's and con's. The animal isn't happy when its sick with no veterinary care, not getting enough food thanks to overpopulation or drought, or being eaten alive by predators. Saying life isn't worth some pain leads to the conclusion that the universe would be a better place if no life existed. Humans aren't gods, life will continue to evolve regardless of how little we like it. We can help by keeping populations and the ecosystem in balance, something we're currently shit at doing.

    • @rachelrust
      @rachelrust 5 лет назад +3

The difference is we put them in farms TO exploit not to be free. Of course truly living in nature will have its share of pain and suffering. But that is the case for all beings. We as humans, in many countries, are ultimately free, that doesn't mean we don't suffer. But, when other humans enslave other humans, that sort of suffering is not equivalent to suffering in the wild. One is forced, one isn't. Also, humans aren't here to keep the ecosystem in balance. That is mother nature's job. Humans were born yesterday in terms of how long humans haven't populated the earth. Let's not pretend humans are some sort of God to watch over life on earth. We are animals ourselves, not an almighty God. The other reason we have to "watch over things" is because we have screwed it up in the first place with our own practices. The reason animals are exploited is because of us, the reason we have trash in our oceans and dying fish is because of us. We are the last beings that you'd want "regulating" nature anyways.

So why should it be okay to take the life of a being who wants nothing to do with us other to live it’s life, this act we do is disgusting and will never be acceptable. Test your brain, learn something new... I know it’s difficult to see the truth when you’re brainwashed into thinking eating this way is okay, we all ate meat or dairy before but we made the connection, and if we have the ability to not cause harm upon these beings, then why don’t we ?

Ok you lost me with the damer thing. I live on a family farm. Our cattle live better lives then if they were on a factor farm. And to be honest, if the world went instantly vegan what would you do with all the cattle? They are domesticated. Yeah, they can be pets, but the cost for them and the land they use is a lot more than a dog or other animal. I literally have grown up on a humane farm. They have a pond to swim in, fresh water, social interaction with other animals and humans, fresh pesticide and hormone free food that is grown right on the farm. You can’t lump all farming together as if they don’t care about the animals. I spent about 3 days camped in our field when one of our cattle got sick and nursed him back to health. Small and humane farmers love and care for their cattle.

This seems contradictory to the suffering argument. If it is all about minimising suffering (and this being the reason why killing plants is just fine), then surely if you can reduce the suffering to just the act of killing , it becomes justifiable by your moral code.
I agree - the animal wants to live. Plants and trees are also driven towards life hence seeking out water and sun, creating poisons on their leaves in case they’re bitten etc etc.
I’m not sure you can have it both ways

When you used the example of the murderer who drugged his victims to compare to stunning animals before processing them, there is a difference. Humans are the only animals capable of reasoning, and deep, critical thought. Killing a human could very well make a massive difference. They could have cured cancer, or invented a revolutionary invention. But a chicken, on the other hand, does not make much of a difference at all. It’s simply one more chicken. Of course, we know animals still feel pain, and still feel emotions, which is the exact reason we make sure they feel no pain whatsoever. We say humane slaughter because they aren’t suffering in the end. It’s quick and painless. Of course, chickens in tight cramped spaces do suffer, and I’m very much against those farms that subject chickens to this sort of thing. If all our farms were truly free range, and animals were truly happy and comfortable before death, that would be the best solution. No pain while growing up, and no pain before being processed. Not only would that make sure they don’t suffer, it would increase the quality of the meat and byproducts!

I am vegan, my pets are not. My dogs get meat from places that raise their animals as best as possible up until their death. I wish there was a better way, but I don’t want my dogs to suffer the health issues and have the nutritional imbalances that come with being on a Plant-Based diet.

Honestly death is just as beautiful as life is. I slaughter and sometimes hunt my own animals and it makes my family respect the meal on the table even more because we saw the meat alive and often took care of it for years. They've had a great life and I don't regret their death at all, it's a wonderful cycle

Out of pure curiosity, are you against people putting down a pet because of maybe incurable cancer or another painful ailment that they will not survive of?
You said “the only humanely way to slaughter an animal is to not slaughter them” but at a certain point isn’t it more cruel to keep a pet alive than to peacefully let it rest?
Not being a contrarian, just a genuine question.

we can improve the living conditions, but does that mean it is moral to kill an animal to eat it, when we have other options to eat that don't involve killing animals and the sentient animal doesn't want to die.

Thanas Stefanis V depends what you view as moral. I see no issue with killing an animal and it depends on what you view as their purpose. I understand its a sensitive topic but people view the world differently.

technically the best we can do for these human modified version of animals is send them to sanctuaries (as their current versions cannot hope to thrive in the wild).

Good Luck!

Plenty of facts on why veganism is the only logical and sustainable solution to a lot of our current problems were seeing on the planet today such as climate change, ocean dead zones, 91% loss of the Amazon, species extinctions, etc.
There's also the ethical reason of unnecessary cruelty to sentient beings humans don't need to eat to survive and thrive.
Here are some links if you wish to research more on your own:

lol i gave one ethical reason. the rest are facts. you don't have to believe science if you don't want i suppose. animal agriculture will still be the main cause of climate change at the end of the day.

Angel Tirado "the trait is higher sentience"
In modern Western philosophy, sentience is defined as the ability to experience sensations, and the most relevant sensation in this context is pain.
There is no reason to think that animals feel pain less than us, in fact Richard Dawkins argues that they might feel it more.
We humans, as more intelligent beings, might not need to feel so much pain to understand we shouldn't do again something that can harm us, while a less intelligent being might need to experience more pain to understand the same thing quickly, before it's too late.

  • @kasrajahani9343

I think the argument that he uses is really flawed! If you claim that the humane ways of farming animals when they have enough and comfortable space to live and killing animals when they don't suffer any pain is still wrong then what you value is just 'life'! In this case it can be argued that plants are living species and they have the right to live! Besides while farming plants you need to use pesticides which results in killing of lots of other animals which have the right to live as well and you can go on using this argument in any case like cutting forest to have farm lands or constructing roads, factories or cities which all cause lots of disruption in other animals' lives.
What I believe is that for him not that much veganism is important (despite what he might think of himself) as it is to have a cause, this activism gives him goal in life and makes his life meaningful, to me he got all the criteria of a very religious person just his religion is veganism which perhaps is even a less developed religion/philosophy than the existing ones.

I think I what what you mean an ya to me life is not precious alone it is quality of life that matters and if they suffer or not to me is the thing that really matters,, although I dont think plants can suffer I read they know when they are being cut but they dont have an ability to care about it ,,,

I'll try and make it as clear as possible. Animals are sentient beings, meaning they experience life with emotions, pain, happiness, sadness, joy, depression, they have families and create bonds. Animals, all animals, including human animals, have a central nervous system. Plants, do not. Plants can't feel pain, they react to stimuli. If you don't believe me, go outside and kick or beat a dog, cat, pig, cow, or chicken, let me know if they cry out in pain. Then do the same to a plant.
