The new analysis shows that while meat and dairy provide just 18% of calories and 37% of protein, it uses the vast majority - 83% - of farmland and produces 60% of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions.”

      58% of Australian land has been cleared or modified for farming.
      Since colonisation Australia has seen more biodiversity loss than any other continent and this rate is still one of the highest globally.
      Agriculture, forestry and fishery industries is just 2% of Australia’s GDP.
      Agriculture dominates our use of the land. Cropping and horticulture occupy about 4% and livestock graze native or modified pastures on almost 56% of the continent

      Feeding vegan Australia would require 2.9Mha of extra food crops to meet our protein requirements. (this includes considerations for export markets)
      An accurate estimate of how much land could be moved from animal to plant agriculture is beyond current research capabilities. But current estimates show that many 10s of Mha of land could be converted from animal production to plant production if required. This consists of about 3 Mha used for fodder, 4 Mha used to grow grain feed, 4 Mha for dairy grazing and a good proportion of the approximately 60 Mha used for grazing.

      The special report on climate change and land by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) describes plant-based diets as a major opportunity for mitigating and adapting to climate change ― and includes a policy recommendation to reduce meat consumption.
      Some livestock farm response options (e.g., improved soil carbon management) have been implemented only at small-scale demonstration facilities and knowledge, financial, and institutional gaps and challenges exist with upscaling and the widespread deployment of these options
      “Balanced diets featuring plant-based foods, such as coarse grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, and animal-sourced food produced sustainably in low greenhouse gas emission systems, present major opportunities for adaptation to and limiting climate change,”

    • @colinmelville8983
      @colinmelville8983 4 года назад

      @@davidthescottishvegan it sounds like you have been fed BS information as well. The majority of people that have chronic diseases were or are eating a very poor diet which is from consuming a large proportion of processed foods. 70% of these diets are plant based for example buying a meal from a takeaway joint such as a hamburger, chips and drink. This contains two bread buns, lettuce, onion, tomato, beetroot, carrot, some kind of sauce etc with a small proportion of animal products such as a beef patty and cheese. Don't forget the chips cooked in vegetable oil and some kind of soft drink. I know this sounds good but it is very unhealthy and you cannot put blame on the animal products that cause chronic diseases. If you eat whole foods which includes grass fed beef, dairy (raw milk products), home grown eggs, wild caught fish and may chuck in some veggies (which is not necessary). Your body craves meat and saturated fat. It is a nesessity for human health which is our natural diet. Stop lying to yourself and get some meat in ya!

      Processed plant foods aren’t good either so if you care about health, a balanced whole food plant based diet is the best one you’ll get. You don’t need animal products to survive or be healthy. Have you seen the Game changers?

    • @colinmelville8983
      @colinmelville8983 4 года назад

      @@summerskye9783 yes you do require animal products to survive. Also not only to survive but thrive. We are not herbivores like cows. Our ancestors thrived on animal products and in the colder winter months when animals were not as available they would forage for plant foods in order to survive. You as a vegan are eating a slave diet as in the "game changers" doco the gladiators did. Gladiators were slaves and they fed them plant foods to fatten them up to last longer in battle. Layers of fat protected them in battle to please the audience. Take a trip to Rome and visit the Coliseum it will open your eyes. As for the athletes in the game changers there performance dropped after they went on a vegan diet. Do some research! Keep eating your slave diet and in time you will realise meat is essential.

    • @garden.of.thistles
      @garden.of.thistles 4 года назад +5

      the only reason I ever even considered going vegan was because of my college English, sociology, and entry level nutrition classes. We had to write a paper in English about animal farming, specifically the exploitation farm and slaughterhouse workers endure, and the fact that the majority of slaughterhouse workers are illegal immigrants, non-english speaking, and thus severely underpaid, uninsured, and without unions. Many workers suffer from untreated injuries from handling animals and working fast slaughter lines. In sociology, we learned about WHERE most of these factory farms are located: In impoverished, mostly black communities; many of the residents suffering from lung disease caused by feces crop spraying. Animals and workers literally DROWN in huge pools of waste that farmers have no way to dispose of except to dump it downriver. Dead animals are left outside for days to rot before being moved. Then I started learning about ocean dead zones, methane emissions, deforestation ... I learned about the amount of resources it takes to uphold large scale animal farming. I seriously tried to look for sustainable meat options, but I also disagreed with farming fish, or killing my family’s chickens (they are egg chickens and love us, plus I’m no killer). Obviously I took a nutrition class and found out that plant based diets are absolutely doable and even healthier on average compared to any other diets studied for disease prevention and recovery. Blue zones, reversing heart disease, arthritis, alzheimer’s ... I learned that the healthiest most “necessary” meat fish, is loaded with PCBs and other contaminants, is NOT recommended for people suffering from alzheimer’s and other diseases because of the heavy metal content, as well as that fishing nets account for almost half of all plastic waste in the oceans. I eventually started watching vegan activists, and I got myself to watch Earthlings. Watching cows get slaughtered sealed the deal for me, I knew I wouldn’t be willing to do the work these people were doing just for a nasty burger, and I couldn’t dare claim to care about animals while paying for their lives to be numbered. There’s honestly such an overwhelming amount of information that points towards boycotting animal agriculture, it’s just a matter of better education and open discussion. I laugh whenever someone accuses me of being part of a “vegan cult” because they have to be the type of person to believe that collage is a cult. I would have NEVER gone vegan if I didn’t go to collage and take these classes. Becoming educated about food production was the only thing that ever made me consider not eating meat.

      Firstly, I agree wit you that adhering to a plant based diet doesn't make you less susceptible to bigotry. Sounds like I need to clarify that being vegan doesn't stop at diet, but includes avoiding all services where humans subjugate and enslave animals.
      Now I imagine that a vegan world would mean that even creatures as different from us as octopuses and fish would be treated with moral consideration and have their right to life respected. It's hard to imagine racism being a primary motivator or justification for any atrocities occurring in that world when we consider how small our human to human differences are

    Man, I appreciate your work! Started being vegan in January this year and continued for 3 months ! But at some point I started to feel really fatigued and reintroduced eggs, fish and diary on my diet! Not sure if it’s the diet or my sleep apnea that caused that.
    About two weeks ago I started to watch your videos. I’m aware of what goes on in the animal industry (having watched a series of documentaries) but the passion you put in your work awaken another level of awareness in me.
    It goes without saying how shitty I felt having eaten diary and knowing the suffering that it causes.
    So I’ve decided to go vegan again, to pay closer attention to my diet, (since I’m a distance runner) equipping myself with knowledge and buy such a great variety of foods that I wouldn’t consider eating animal products again.

    I have heard that insect vs meat argument which is ridiculous. Eating vegetables causes less death and is the lesser cause of deaths if any. The difference between a meat eater and one who doesn't, is that a meat eater intentionally kills for pleasure of taste. A person that has a veg/fruit diet, does not intentionally try to kill insects for pleasure of taste. Intention is everything.

      It depends what you mean by vegan. A self proclaimed vegan can be a hypocrite as long as the violate their own stated principles, and by virtue of that would actually not be a vegan as to actually be a proponent of an ideology you have to follow the obligatory principles of that ideology. So if you mean an actual vegan(i.e. a person who claims to be a vegan and does follow all the principles), then yes, they are not hypocrites. So as any other ideology where the proponents of it follow all of the principles associated with it.
