In retrospect there were definitely some things I would have preferred to answer in a bit more detail and things I left out, but of course you do the best you can in the situation when on the spot.
One thing I noticed with these students, as intelligent as they all are, they were only pointing outside of themselves it seemed. They were constructing or pointing to exceptional scenarios on the edge and I saw no one address or justify their own contribution to the violence towards animals.
I wanna say a big thank you to the amazing and open minded professor who allowed me in to talk to the students and I hope to do something like this again soon.
Here’s my response to the debate

Amazing job Joey! Public speaking is never easy, especially public debating! I've been following you since you started your channel and man have you grown so much! The fact that you are as big as you are now, man, I would never have thought that. All anyone needs is to have that small seed planted, I can gurantee you and you would know this to, that every single person will be more concious now. They may not change tomorrow, but they will change.
Thanks for what you do. Keep up the amazing work team Carbstong!

Joey Carbstrong, so tell me, how is a person like myself that's allergic to all grains and has trouble digesting legumes suppose to be healthy on a vegan diet? Am I suppose to graze on leafy green vegetables and fruits all day like a cow and never reach my daily caloric intake? Vegans need to understand not everyone can be healthy on a vegan diet!

    • @ooohcodes

They have no logic Joey, they are all about group think and can't justify their own actions. This is how liberals think these days. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Live by that quote and life is easy.
I have only been vegan for a couple years so i ate meat most my life. Until i saw the light and saw that you are actually harming another sentient being for your own selfish needs and it is not even healthy for you at the same time. The choice is easy.

"how is a person like myself that's allergic to all grains and has trouble digesting legumes suppose to be healthy on a vegan diet?
I do not eat grains or legumes and I eat raw plants only. Raw fruit, sprouts and leafy greens are even healthier than legumes and grains. You do not need to be allergic to grains to appreciate superior digestion with even better plant foods.
"Am I suppose to graze on leafy green vegetables and fruits all day like a cow"
Not like a cow. Like an orangutan. You decide what YOU are "supposed to eat" instead of setting up fallacies of bifurcation and looking for someone else to tell you what to do as YOU jockey for a victim role.
"and never reach my daily caloric intake?"
? I eat 2,700 calories a day on a raw plant diet. You can too if you want to.
"Vegans need to understand not everyone can be healthy on a vegan diet!"
No. YOU need to understand that YOU choose to consume animal products and YOU have not provided any evidence that ANY human requires meat intake because NO human eats meat as a biological imperative unless deprived of healthy food. There is NO evidence any human requires anything found only in animal products EVER. If you find an example go ahead and publish it because your insight seems to be missing in the scientific literature. "The British Dietetic Association (BDA) and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) state that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful and nutritionally adequate and appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence and older adulthood. AND indicates that a vegan diet is also appropriate for the needs of an athlete."

I think it's the sort of thing Universities need to introduce more often. Debates like this are so important for the sake of perspective, rather than just having arguments online with people who think that good nutrition only applies to one type of diet e.c.t Joey needs to be able to clear the air with this whole vegan thing and explain that not every vegan or animal activist is a complete douche. I do think however, that Joey need to look into nutrition and be more specific. He's gotta stop saying it's causes diabetes, cancer .e.c.t and start explaining how these things occur. Otherwise, if he encounters someone who knows about adequate nutrition, he's going to get destroyed.

      @theparadiddlydoo2771 6 лет назад +5

*Beep Boop* What would be the problem with that? Dr Greger isn't the worst option that there is but I still think it's better for Joey to study the chemical structure/breakdown of each vitamin/mineral or whatever it may be, so that he he can hold a conversation about nutrition. There's to many studies out there that have conflicting information. All these people online who think they're the "king of the walk" simply because they've studied or recited a few pages worth of information about nutritional topics doesn't exactly strike me as a "good resource". Especially when they try and connect the dots and attempt to make a plant based diet sound much more inadequate than it is.

BounceTo TheBeat if he encounters someone who actually is educated about nutrition, he's going to be agreed with, hardly destroyed

I’m 43, been vegan for 4 years and never looked back. Had the niggling ethical thing stabbing at the back of my mind for far longer than I’ve been vegan until one day I was just like “f*ck it I’m going vegan!” No regrets except for not doing it sooner, love the food- no cravings for animal products- for me if u get the right vegan foods / brands they’re tastier than their animal counterparts in my opinion. Lost weight, feel healthier and most importantly feel morally sound. Thanks Joey! You and Ed Winters are my main inspirations 😊

I supported my Daughter, now alnost 19, with her vegetarianism thru Anorexia with her Hospital insisting all the way through it was a symptom of her Anorexia. There were plenty of plant based optiions to feed her. 5 years later she's now totally healthy & I'm now Vegan. I have never felt better physically, mentally & spiritually. 'Treat others the way you would like to be treated' has always resonated with me, having meditated on it a lot over my 51 yrs. Swaying away from that basic truth of that is the cause of most of our problems & also points to why we shouldn't exploit & kill animals for food.

If it is just a symptom of anorexia then she would not need to quit. What is the point of treating harmless symptoms? What you have to treat are causes and any symptoms which are too severe.
Though good to hear that it was not a symptom of a disease. Makes sense. Veganism can easily be very healthy for humans.

This is also the 3rd year I will be celebrating all of the holidays alone because my family doesn’t respect my decision to be vegan. They don’t want me bringing my vegan food to their table. Oh the horror of grains and veggies!! They don’t want to hear my reasons for becoming vegan. They called my plant-based & harm-free lifestyle choice _silly_ and _very bizarre_ - so yeah......

I have more options now, I had to get creative and learn how to cook differently, but it opened up a whole new world of options I never knew was there. It helped my Ed bc I didn't feel dirty after eating. I stopped counting calories because I knew there were far less than in meat or cheese. It took away a lot of worries and allowed me to get over that struggle and fear of weight gain, and allowed me to still exercise with a clear mind instead of the constant goal of having a negative calorie intake by the end of the day.

I think that the question needed a response that implied that yes small changes are good and accidents happen. We are not all perfect and the world we live in has been designed to make a plant based diet less convenient than an animal inclusive diet. She was referring to vegans that shame people who struggle and make mistakes and needed to hear that people that the movement is empathetic at its core and acceptance is key. Small strides lead to bigger ones.

Now, after 6 months of intuitive eating and 10 months of veganism, I can say that I finally feel free and that my relationship with food is fixed.
Veganism actually helped me not to feel guilty because I could remember that even if I ate some cake or chocolate, as long as it was vegan, I was doing a good thing.

You’re taught for years that you cannot succeed from failure, which is the opposite in real life. you’re told how intelligent you are, your ego is stroked and the concept of the real world is skewed because when you leave you realise most of the theory you learned will never be used once you leave student life behind. Like you vegan people only think about animals in farming not the animals and forests and humans that die every year so you can drink your soy milk almond milk corn everything, and please don't say dairy or any animal farms require forest to be cut be cause your lieing to your self and others take a drive to the Sierra's National Forest and tell how many trees were cut for those open range cattle to feed can you guess 0% guess how many forest are cut down so you can eat your salad thousands and hay farms take up not even 3% of the farming it's all your veggies you want so badly and eat and if we were to stop animal farming guess what more plantations less rivers more dams and canals that is thousands of species dead pesticides thousands of animals and natural habitats gone think before you speak studying is key knowledge is power

@@necrosisbroseph1793 thank you for sharing your thoughts, and weighing in on the subject.
So lets approach this from a common sense angle.
A 25 lb sack of potatoes:
      1) feeds a human for 33 days.
      2) feeds a cow for 1 day
You would need lots and lots of fields, and space to grow the food.
We look to poor countries to do that cheap for us. They cut down rainforest.
Meanwhile these cows produce so much urine and dung, we don't know what to do with it.
Germany (for example) has so much cow urine & dung, nitrates seep into the ground water rendering it unsafe to drink.
It's best explained in the documentary 'Cowspiracy'. Please watch it, and let me know what you think 😊👍💚

This persn was in fact classist themselves, and hypocritical at that. The hero would make an offering of meat to the gods while he would eat the bad tasting liver. Fish is good for joint health, and literally, every human civilization would eat fish. Much like anything, not all fish is created equal. Though there is a reason why you can buy fish oil in the vitamin section, it reduces swelling in the knees, and doctors will recommend it.
I did scan over the article, but I did not see any statistics on sugar consumption, access to health care, and overall economic status. All of these play a factor and can alter the statistics of this study. If you are a vegan, there is a good chance you are wealthy. If you do not have access to meat, chances are you're eating beans, beans, and more beans. You may have access to corn, rice, potatoes, and other greens. Most vegan delicacies don't grow well here in the United States and require refrigeration and long-distance transportation. It's also more expensive, and you need to be eating all day every day.
I was vegan for five long years, and I remember being always hungry with little energy. Workouts were harder, and I felt sluggish all the time. I also found out that my sugar consumption was significantly higher. Without fat or meat, you sacrifice taste, and you end up adding sugar to everything. I never got back into my regular workout again, and I was addicted to sugar, so I gained an easy 20 lbs. I went back to eating meat and didn't quit sugar, so I gained another 30 pounds. @@soulhunter59 your own personal anectode is irrelevant without any other evidence that meat is neessary for our health. The fact that you didn't appropriately plan your diet is no proof of anything. I could get a person who eats a shitty diet in any dietary group and make any claim I want. A;so. the vegan diet is definitely not more expensive nor for the priviliged. I am a student on a budget and I manage to meet my nutritional needs with 20 euros a week. So what are you talking about, have you ever done your own groceries? The poorest people on the planet are plant based. And what people did years ago is irrelevant to our modern society. As I said no other diet group had a lower all cause mortality than the vegan group, so unless you have any evidence that vegans as a population have higher rates of deficiency or bad health outcomes your claims have no ground. link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00394-015-1079-7
A recent study has show that vegans do not have higher prevalence of deficiencies compared to other groups. Vitamin A was definately not one of the deficiencies that was specific to the vegan group.
The iron in your meat is also heme iron which is a pro oxidant in the body and raises your relative risk for cancer... And that's why vegans had a lower prevalence of cancer, epecially breast and prostate cancer.
Meat is by no means necessary for human health and you making such claims is just plain wrong and dangerous.

Even after I got over the E.D I didn't have a love for food, but since being vegan I've felt a peace with it, and it's opened up a huge variety of foods that I would never have tried/thought I'd like. If you had made the decision to become vegan and kept it up for as long as you did, but one day some aspect of the meat and dairy and egg industrys' campaign somehow became a powerful stimulus for you to choose to act in a way that conflicts with your values, do you see how veganism isn't the cause. In fact, do you also see that an increased presence of veganism will make it easier for you to avoid such stimulai and to live into your values? Do you see that, rather than allowing shame or embarrassment stop you, positively acting on the guilt and renewing your commitment to be vegan will contribute to the demand (and stop the demand for animal abuse) and help purpetuate change as well as offering solidarity to others who wish to avoid the unhelpful stimulai too.

11:48 okay i have two answers for anyone who still thinks humans are natural carnivores or have an instinct to kill:
    1. Primates were mostly herbivores, with some insects that they occasionally ate for lack of plant sources having certain minerals available in lesser numbers. And primates are our ancestors. Homo habilus, homo erectus, neanderthals(complete vegans) were all only plant eating. Until ice age which also only effected the temperate regions and beyond to shift to meat.
1.1 a small extra fact: human digestive system is least effcient with digesting meat. In fact its a very well known fact that our metabolism and alimentary canal are least active and slow down body processes for breaking down food essentially not meant for them.
    2. Every animals naturally designed to kill has tools in yheir body which help them digest their non vegetarian diet:
    Like • claws (with curves)
    • canine teeth specifically designed and arranged for attack on prey etc.
And human have canines that herbivores share for biting into plant. They dont resemble carnivores arrangements rather are more blunt and just an extra tool developed to penetrate fruit and vegetables, sometimes stems.
And considering the counter arguement for 2 that: well, humans have intellect/brain that functions to come up with solutions for making meat possible to eat by inventing the first ever artifical tools, aka non bodily tools, againa the question boils down to: if it is not for survival, would an early man, or per se even a modern man killing something because he likes the taste, custom or sense of intellectual superiority justify his actions towards an animal with feelings experiences and sometimes better cognition than himself?
    22:00 great response
    28:04 also a little response:
"Because they only had rice and cabbage and meat"
Well, a meat producing factory farm takes up about 18 times as much land as a plant based farm does. Because we feed the live stock and then kill it, have another gen ready to be fed woth more land/ if its factory then the fodder comes from a different location still using up about 18 times the land that we actually need.
67% of the world agricultural land is used to feed livestock
21.8% is used for protein sources like legumes, green veggies and stuff.
So you're actually using less land, contributing to smaller carbon foot print, producing more food than ever, and vertical fsrming can even bring in all the 20,000+ edible plant species for cultivation. Its about realisation of facts and how far as a consumer you are willing to say no to meat, and increase the highly efficient plant based farming industry.

The only real argument against veganism is "You just don't give a shit about what happens to them".
