I have a question, could you explain how so many smaller countries were powerful in the past such as Sweden or Poland (Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) defeating Russia, but in more modern days it seems as if Size matters more and more and smaller countries would never be able to defeat nations like Russia or the USA in a large-scale conflict?
Sweden punched well above its weight due to its recruitment practices, allowing for more quality movltivated men to be recruited into the military. Swedish infantry known as "caroleans" used aggressive combined arm tactics that granted them victories against foes much larger than their own. Ultimately, manpower did limit Sweden, and they lost to Russia in the Great Northern War.
The Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth was actually a very large country and was once the largest nation in Europe, excluding Russia.
Wish I knew more personally im curious about your question as well but that's all I gave for you heh
short answer- russia used to be smaller. most of its eastern territory wasn't fully mapped even by early soviet times, and even now most of it is not very populous. the only real advantage for russia of stretching from the baltic to the pacific, is that it doesn't have any potential eastern land front to fight on, and (of course) has naval access to the pacific. yes, a very long southern border, but there is no way to surround russia at this point without alliancing or conquering a dozen different countries.
you must leave all that aside though, when you realize that nuclear armaments changed the philosophy of war between empires completely. yes, a lot of soviet nukes fell into other hands when it collapsed, but russia is still a great nuclear power. the simple truth is, if anyone powerful enough to commit a successful land invasion of russia were to attempt it, they would immediately be risking nuclear retaliation, by nature of being a nuclear threat to russia themselves.
The Thiois Empire should've gotten France for their effort, thats a great minus!
