    Windscreen wiper linkage repair:
    For those who don't mind a bit of DIY preventative maintenance on their out-of-warranty Model S then you might be interested to learn that the windscreen wiper mechanism need not be an inevitable, high mileage >50,000 miles replacement.
    The offside wiper spindle is prone to wearing heavily after a few years which tends not to be noticed until there is so much play in the spindle that the driver's side wiper arm wears a groove in the bonnet. I have applied a small piece of thick tape to the underside of the bonnet adjacent to the driver’s side spindle to give an early warning of heavy wear.
    The cost of the assembly is approximately £170 and if it is replaced by a Tesla mobile technician the total bill could be over £400.
    Lifting the wiper arms off the splined spindle can be tricky as there is not enough room to use a conventional wiper arm removal tool.
    It might be a good idea to remove the wiper arm nuts some days in advance and apply PlusGas or WD40 to help loosen them.
    Once the wiper arms are removed (followed by a circlip, washer and then a rubber 'O' ring) the spindle can be lowered slightly to apply some lubricant.
    Whilst the plastic scuttle cover was off I squirted some lithium grease on the other pivots.
    I have yet to try it but perhaps a shim at the base of the spindle could take up any excessive wear.
    There are some videos on RUclips showing how to change the wiper assembly: here is just one: ruclips.net/video/h4ICrDADugU/видео.html
    Warning: whenever working on the windscreen area, place a thick coat/old towel/carpet/thick cardboard over the windscreen to prevent accidental breakage.
    Here is the link for Tesla's instructions for the replacement of the wiper motor assembly replacement should you have left lubrication too late: service.tesla.com/docs/ModelS/ServiceManual/en-us/GUID-47977C8A-5AB1-447C-8B14-67C94B6111D1.html

    • @dougowt
      @dougowt Год назад +1

      Its not a £17k time bomb. You can get them repaired for considerably less, as the entire pack doesn't fail. And what about a cambell breaking and a dozen other problems you can get with an ICE vehicle happening to the Polo?! I'm running an 85D Model S which just passed 250,000 miles this week. It still drives spot on and it also has the free supercharging. I've saved 4k on fuel in the last 12 months. And no oil changes etc. Plus your brake pads last 120,000+ And having replaced discs and pads on an E class, I know that adds up too.

    Oh Scott.. you broke so many rules, it's hard to keep track.. lol First off, nothing wrong with the 19's. In fact, what you did actually made things worse. In terms of range that is. Yeah, I get it. They might look better esthetically, but ultimately they're worse for the vehicle. Not to mention they're dark wheels. Nothing more horrible than having dark wheels on a vehicle. You know its winter around my area when everyone puts on black steelies with winter rubber. That's what I equate to having black wheels. Horrendous winter! 😛
    Aside from that, supercharging. Yeah, try to avoid that as much as you can. The poor thing has 237k miles (Good lord that's alot! Here people get nervous when a vehicle has more than 100k km's!). Last thing you want is another battery pack giving up on you. Try to charge as much as you can at home. And only to about 80% of the battery for most things.
    While not having the pano roof might be inconvenient, it might've saved you future headaches. The models with the pano roof have leaking issues. As you know, water and electrical anything don't mix. 😉 Aside from that, looking forward to the bumper upgrade. If you can find the free charger and only use a Tesla charger that A, isn't broke or B, isn't in use. Any other charger will cost you more then any diesel or petrol per mile. Home charging is also dearer even using Octopus the cheapest EV charge company.

    • @simonpritchard472
      @simonpritchard472 Год назад +1

      @@trevorjones5625 Well... If you have a compatible EV it's possible to go onto an Octopus tariff which gives you 6 hours at 7.5 p/kWh. That works out at 2p/mile or less. Otherwise you can get 4 hours at 9.5p, still less than 3p/mile. But yes, charging on rapids is expensive right now.

    Great content, would argue that if you are going to bother doing the brakes, upgrading the calibre, rotors, and pads from a good brand like Brembo, isn't that much money and it will majorly improve the car. Generally, Tesla's actually benefit majorly from some tweaks here and there when it comes to handling and stopping as well as it accelerates.

    • @robertgreen9614
      @robertgreen9614 Год назад +1

      The standard Model S brakes are made by Brembo.

    • @vinex19
      @vinex19 Год назад

      @@robertgreen9614 hence why getting better, calibre’s, discs and pads are so easily swapped in. Brembo produces a wide range of products, discs and pads from different material compositions and different characteristics. The standard discs are a weakness on the Tesla because the car is particularly heavy. If you have an S and live around some winding roads, making the pedal go soft is a bit too easy relative to the fast acceleration, IMO.

    • @robertgreen9614
      @robertgreen9614 Год назад

      @@vinex19 Don't forget to put some decent stainless braided hoses and higher spec brake fluid in it (Tesla only specifies Dot 3).. Be a shame if you spent your money on all the other crap you thought you "needed" and still ended up with a soft pedal.😉

    There was another video of a guy in USA who repaired a Tesla main battery- I was sure it was your original car, and thought this video would be about the repair. The fellow opened up the big battery and found 1 cell out of the 17000 was bad- apparently this one bad cell causes the whole system to shut down and not charge properly. He replace the cell and the battery worked fine- cost for the labor to remove and open the battery- test to find the bad cell and button everything up was about 7000.00 US.

    • @bikeman123

      Doesn't seem a very good design if 1 cell in 17,000 can cause complete failure

    • @oldschool1993
      @oldschool1993 11 месяцев назад

      @@bikeman123Sort of yes and no- good to be able to just replace one cell rather than the entire battery, but the cost of finding it is expensive. I suppose the manufacturing theory is that there is a pretty small failure rate on these little cells and they are probably tested by some robotic device before approval for installation. As time progresses and more people get involved in the industry, there will probably be independent shops that can open, test and replace bad cells at a reasonable rate.
