Feeling relevant to someone, even if strangers, is a common, social need. Ego, but not necessarily narcissism, needing massaged, coming from a predisposition of lacking attention from those you care about, having no one at all taking the basic slots of those that should, and/or becoming infatuated with certain others, maybe a clique, to gain social points from. I'd say if it was narcissistic personality disorder, there'd be a lack of depression. But narcissism isn't always to the level of disorder. The old sentiment since the 90s about the internet and society is that we are becoming more and more interconnected yet more and more distant. So these "friends" lists, or the more exciting "followers" title for some, give them a sense of belonging to the even higher level of celebrity. I'm not excluding myself. I'm not wanting to be a famous, but you do get that sense of having an online group that you can't get in real life due to location. So the good and the bad create a crossover, depending.
Studies have showed that some people in this generation don't care for traditional jobs, they only care about internet fame. Sad part about this is that they'll do anything for fame these days, bad or good. Fame is fame, also I may add that internet fame can be short lived once your audience grows tired of you.
