Other than power, it's also important to remember that the angled version of the roundhouse is not terribly useful as a high kick. Aimed at the head, it is unlikely to clear the arms. It's super useful for kicks to the ribs, though, as the angle brings it up under the obstructing elbow.
And Master Woo... just say NO to mullets...

Hello Master Woo, I actually use the chamber for the fast kick and combine it with my "Thai" kick in Muay Thai it also lands Alot faster and balances power and Speed. This video is great!
I wish to learn TKD when I was younger but I ended up to muay thai instead but the kicks are similar like the round house kick. nice content btw.

To be fair all roundhouse kicks are similar. And the muay thai kick is only perceived to be most brutal bc taekwondo and karate are more associated with tournaments which aren't as realistic considering all they care about is speed yo get points where muay thai is associated with kickboxing and especially within the past 10 years associated with mma and in both muay thai kickboxing and mma you habe leg kicks unlike TKD and Karate tournaments. And for some reason that is how most TKD and Karate schools teach and train students is the fast point style and not the style that would be "most effective" in the street one in a cage/ring. TKD has fastest and most powerful roundhouse according to fight science video, but the person also is a major factor so that isn't always true all the time.
@@solarjudgement4575 yeah but there's a change in TKD tournaments before the person who does the most kick wins now it is like fencing where the one who kick faster and hit the target gets the point.

Question for you Master Woo, the second faster kick you described I was taught is an "angle kick" which is aiming to the ribs or the side of the body if the opponent is sideways on. Is an angle kick an actual kick in TaeKwonDo or just a variation of the roundhouse kick? If so would you mind telling me it's name in Korean? Great videos by the way!! Many thanks!

Master Woo, I have an important question. When I was a child, I was trained at ATA Taekwondo. They taught me to strike with the ball of my foot for front kicks and jump front kicks. 30 years later, I'm currently training at JK Taekwondo. They're teaching me to strike with the instep when doing the front kicks. My question is which one is correct and how does a front kick that hits with the instep actually strike the opponent?

Good demonstration and good break down. The rule's in TKD have changed quite a bit which now favors spinning or jumping head kicks, but many athletes still prefer to use less risk adverse techniques.
How would you get around some of these cutting techniques in order to land spinning kicks or jumping head kicks?

Thank you for your comments, for your question, I will mention on one of our future sparring video.
This is where I will part with TKD regarding round kick. I prefer the Okinawan or Shotokan way of impacting the round kick. The Okinawan or Shotokan uses the ball of the foot to impact the kick, It is when they hit at the legs where they use the instep of the foot. Consider this, which one is more injurious, the flat part of the hammer or the head part that will pin the nail? the head of the hammer is the ball of the foot where all the energy will be drive in; while the flat part is the instep of the foot.
