How to Completely Disable Windows Update (Windows 7)

To disable Windows Update try the following:
- go to the Start Menu
- type "Run" and click on Run
- type SERVICES.MSC and click OK
- scroll down to Windows Update and double-click it
- at Startup Type select Disabled
- click The Stop button
- click OK
*under Windows 10 the Windows Update service will re-enabling itself even after is disabled and stopped!

In the Services, in Windows Update Properties (Local computer) 1:30 , you also need to go in "Recovery" tab, and in "First failure" click "Take no action". "Reset fail count after" set to "0" days and click "OK"

i got error pop-up. "Windows could not stop the Windows Update serivce on Local Computer. Error 1053. The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." (I cannot 'apply' the changes like you showed and the pointer just keep round-and-round'); it didn't work. At the end, the 'shield' shows a stress-mark-with-yellow-backround instead on an x-with-red-background like you showed.

Used the same genuine XP CD after formatting hard drive. Installed SP 2 and 3 manually. Telephone activated Windows but still stuck with IE 6...seems SP3 is not taking any effect....NEVER had this problem...also turned BITS On under services.msc...never ever did this before....so WHAT can be wrong...as before till last month 300 plus updates used to come in automatically?
