Let's Play realMYST - Part 11 of 34

- This video is entirely devoted to tips and suggestions for solving the spaceship puzzle, so yeah I get bored watching it too.
This will be a leisurely exploration of realMYST, the 3D remake of Myst. These videos are good for fun facts, time-wasting, and cheesy jokes, but bad for a quick show-me-the-answer-now walkthrough.

This is one of the puzzles in this game that you really shout YES when you get it.
I love the fact that the first thing you did when you saw the organ was play the Space Quest theme.
Okay wow that's really sensible. Funnily enough I basically failed hard at this when I was younger and resorted to counting half-steps every time I played it since, except in the intervening time I learned to play guitar and this made so much more sense as a result.
xD
you kill me mate.
"I'm going to assume your not deaf, because you can hear me"
died of laughter.
I just played the game thru, and this puzzle made me quit it for a day until I watched this video, so thanks for that! All the guides described the positions in numbers, but at first I didn't realize that when having sliders at the bottom, they are in fact in number 1, not number 0. So you need to lift the first slider 7 steps, not 8, like the guides suggested. Overall, what makes this puzzle difficult is the fact that you need to use mouse to lift them up notch by notch, and everytime you tend to lift it up too much, messing up the calculation (even with lowest mouse speed this is a problem). Had they made the puzzle work with keyboard arrows, it would have been easy peasy.
Man this was so neat hearing the music puzzle talked about by someone that knows music. For example I didn't even know those keys were F and C haha.
I always did it by playing it on the piano, then humming it to myself. XD
Ugh, the piano puzzle. I have NO ear for intervals...and at the time I played this game as a kid, I didn't know any musical theory that would have helped me, either. This took me something like 2 hours of brute trial-and-error. I was almost ready to cry.
I'm sure your method actually would help someone who had even a little bit more of an ear than me, though.
Awesome! The Space Quest theme at 00:15. :)
Your cocky attitude about your abilities inspired both annoyance and admiration in me all at once the first time I watched this. heh :P
This part solidified my belief that your goofy exterior was just hiding a sharp, creative mind. This was really well thought out and I'd imagine very helpful, especially for people who are tone deaf. I guess I can see why you'd think people might get bored listening to the whole thing, but to me it's very interesting to hear you explain these things in detail.
I actually found the method you described of matching the Fs and Cs harder to get then simply listening for the tones, as someone who doesn't listen to a lot of music and despite learning the piano and trumpet when I was in school, I guess I don't have much of an ear when it comes to matching tones from different octaves.
I was watching another lets play before this one of the master edition of Myst and he did the tone matching, I personally found that easier. But I love the pacing you have :)
Hey man Thanks! Running 7 x64, all sound works, except the spaceship puzzle '~' thanks to you I could figure out the solution by matching your sliders with my sliders :D. Saved me!
i did this puzzle when i was around 12, and i still remember the tune...
that's how much i love this game :D
i love your solving method for the notes
You seriously should be a teacher. You're great at explaining things logically and in a way that is pleasant to listen to.
7:49 - "We know that we have not f (f***ed) to this up yet!
(Drumroll)
Did I hear something?"
That wasn't a drum roll. It's called the joke drum effect.
Very good technique there. Takes me quite a while to do it by ear just one note at a time, and can't count it all out, so this will save me lots next time I bash my head against it.
The music puzzle stumped me when I played.
A music lesson in a remake of a classic game.
I remember back in the day, it seemed like every single adventure game had to have some form of music puzzle. This is what I blame for that. I could always get past 'em, but it was a bloody pain.
did i just get a music theory lesson? man thats awesome
I'm not good at music, and I enjoyed the challenge of this; in my opinion it is one of the best most important challenges in myst.
"I'm gonna assume you're not deaf because you can hear me."
YOU HAVE PERFECT PITCH?
Aw man. I'm jealous.
The problem with that is it makes the library clue unnecessary, since you can just set them all to the lowest note, test it, then move all the sliders up one, test it again, and so on.
Even with the counting half steps method, you still have to know the answer going in.
@shadyparadox i loved the myst books!
I listen along as I played.
Thank you for music advice
Lol I wouldn't even need to think on this puzzle, just use my ear.
I always just used the counting method on this. I beat this before I was in any music class. Now I could probably do it by ear. Haven't tried though.
Space Quest theme ftw
I've got perfect pitch, but I still learned something about music today! I don't really take music classes...
I agree with the host guy. The organ puzzle was pretty easy. I mean, the pattern was right in the book.
Pretty good!
Ok. I was curious because if I were to make a saved game for you, now I know to play the original (which I need to go find now), and I wouldn't need to enter the next combination in the Selenitic Age.
I beat this puzzle by playing the note on the keyboard, taking a deep breath, and humming the note loudly whist running back to match the note on the slider with my voice. I must of looked really stupid...
For me, you are the best. Thank you very much for help!
Subscription! Cool video -> +! and Love! ;)
I was thinking that it is impossible to do
Earlier I totally didn't know how to do this (How to set the buttons by mistake in the game/in the game system) , now i know!
I always used to attack the rocket puzzle by using the keyboard and remembering the pitch.. this was back in windows 95 days though ;/
Wow, you have perfect pitch? That fucking rocks!
Music wasn't a favorite class of mine so go figure. :/ Still though, it's awesome how you can remember all these notes and it comes easy to you. Kudos.
I loved your method on counting half steps! :) You did a great job!
I have hearing (I'm not deaf, I enjoy music); I just don't have a sense for tone or rhythm, so I'm really bad a rhythm games and such.
So, yeah, I can do sound identification puzzles, like that one animal puzzle in Riven (good game, btw, you should do that one next I think.)
Also, I only have the original.
I'm surprised you didn't get the B-flat by making it even with the first C. After all, you did get the E-flat by counting down from F.
+Stuart Simon You can, it just may be trickier to line them up when they're so far apart. All my matching was done with adjacent sliders.
+shadyparadox I hated that puzzle! The spaceship one 😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣
I always knew the piano was racists :p
LOL @ Space Quest theme on organ.
I HATED this puzzle. My friend and I as kids had to hold up a tape recorder and record the sounds from the organ for like 3 minutes and tried to match it that way.
I'm horrible at music theory. At one time, I could re-compose simple PC game music on a keyboard with some trial and error and write the sheet for it, but that's about it.
"Did I hear something?" Lame, but it was worth that joke :P
Man, that drum fill cracked me up! Thanks to you I have to change pants now. Geez, I am still laughing ^^ Awesomes.
Your pronunciation of Selenitic is a pet peeve to the language nerd in me though ;D That's not how default stress patterns in English work! It's se-le-'NITE so the adjectival form would be se-le-'NIT-ic. (Hell, even without knowing about the mineral, doesn't se-'LE-ni-,tic just sound awkward to you?)
I found this really easy but I wouldn't consider myself "good" at music.
But I know I'm worse than you because I needed the organ.
i have myst on psp; it's way easier, because using the directional keypad you can pretty well just move the slider just a tiny amount up at a time. i recomend for this; to change the settings on your computer, putting the mouse on a low sensitivity.
Funniest reaction to a rimshot ever. Kudos to you, sir.
7:49 - that pun was totally planned, wasn't it?
Whoa! Did you play the Space Quest theme on that organ?
That was "Take me out to the ball game".
Do you have the original game or realMYST? And does your hearing prevent you from solving just the music puzzle or anything with sound identification? That's important because the next puzzle is comprised of identifying various ambient sounds.
I never actually got to the age because of this puzzle. I'm eagerly awaiting episode 12 because I will finally see the stupid age.
Is there anywhere where we can download partially completed saved games of games like this? It seems unfair that I can't play part of the game just because I have bad hearing.
@ilikemario8 How would you unlock the door? The generator doesn't work.
You know what I'd like to see? Someone randomly f**king around on that organ.
0:15 - 0:22 SPACE QUEST IV!!!!!!!!!!!!
the spaceship looks different in real myst from the older version
Why couldn't there be little lights above each slider that turned red if you got it wrong, and green if you got it right when you played the sequence?
yeah i just memorized the notes from the book, played each one on the organ over there and adjusted the sliders to match the pitchs. the puzzle's pretty straight forward. is this really a notoriously difficult part for people? o.O
@superjesse64 You know, I could actually see that happening!
*drum fill*
I'm terrible with music. I know the science of sound well, but the applied math in music seems to elude me. You'd think that only a small range in the electromagnetic spectrum would be easy to understand. Harmonics is easy, but getting to understand the different notes and chords, ugh.
Either way, if my life depended on music theory, I certainly would die trying. : /
Ha, I've played myst and realmyst so many times that I remembered in my head the exact phrase of notes.
I did the music puzzle as easy as thinking, and I'm terrible with music. Like, I don't know chords or names of notes or anything, and believe me I've tried. I guess it takes all sorts.
Holy crap! You actually know how to play a piano/organ?!
Oh, and what if there was a small screen above the sliders that, if you got the sequence wrong, would say "ACCESS DENIED" and if you get the sequence right, it says, "ACCESS GRANTED", then the book appears on the screen?
Apparently I'm pretty good musically for this puzzle, i just have no belief in myself..haha...yeah
Same exact thing I did. lol
if you look close at the book in the circle thing theres a face on it just look at it for a minute
@TheSecondIDare ya thats how i did it.
LOL
This code has been burned into my memory for all eternity. :D BTW, has anyone actually attempted to input the music from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind?" :D (I have!!! 8D)
there is a door under the ship
Its funny as the user has commented on severely of youre videos trolling about and we can see whos got way to much time on his hands
You have perfect pitch? So, it's a small world after all.
shadyparadox i just wanted to KICK this GAME OUT THE DOOR!!!!
Sorry if I'm amazed at such a seemly ordinary talent... but I took 5 years of guitar (easiest instrument around) classes and can't play for shit TT_TT
I can't get into the spaceship!
The whole series probably took about as much time as it would take to read the Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Besides, it's just a hobby, not a definition of my existence.
Furthermore, it actually serves a purpose. I share my insight into games I enjoy with others that also enjoy the game. Fun!
You just troll the internet. While this doesn't take much time, it serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever. Go find something useful to do.
Impossible puzzle, they had to replace it, people with no musical background can simple not do it at all.
God I wish I wasn't tone deaf...
I agreed that this puzzle was too easy. And actually, true tone deafness is very rare. But I can see why people would be frustrated by this one.
No guide whatsoever, no series of tips, nothing so far, not even holding notes on my keyboard helped me solve this puzzle. >:/ There's sometimes a discrepency between the slider notes and the organ notes, which isn't helpful at all. I'm not using realMYST
What if your blind
What if you can't use proper grammar.
