  • This will be a leisurely exploration of realMYST, the 3D remake of Myst. These videos are good for fun facts, time-wasting, and cheesy jokes, but bad for a quick show-me-the-answer-now walkthrough.

You actually probably already know this. That broken up piece of the pathway was burned up by the monkey-people. That's the piece of walkway the uber-old human man Atrus met landed on when he jumped from the tree huts. Atrus said they burned his body and the section of walkway he landed on. ^^

"everywhere we go, everything we see starts out inoperable"... haha.

This age was my only failure in Myst, the only place where I needed a guide. I just couldn't wrap my head around the overall concept and the layout of the age.

I remember now. I actually considered putting a brief "Reading Rainbow" audio clip from that song during that part of the video, but then thought better of it.

I was definitely thinking about Reading Rainbow when I referred to traveling to other worlds in books as "corny" near the end of Part 17. I didn't explicitly state it though.

That's Myst for you. Just keep punching all the buttons and everything will work out eventually.

It's funny how this one has some of my favorite lines and one of my least favorite. :P

"It seems like everywhere we go, everything we see starts out inoperable."
    haha, glorious.
"Oh the places we could be going."
I love this. This is something I think from time to time so it was funny to hear it here

"Drawing the water out of the...water" lol
The hieroglyphs thing is great. That's the kind of overthinking I would do too. They really do resemble writing of some kind

At least the water thing isn't at bad as in Sierra games where water usually means instant death.
Uru: Path of the Shell is the only instance in Myst that you can swim, in the Age called Ahnonay. I can't think of any other place in any Myst game where you can swim. :-)

    The swamp probably has Ninjagators.

I finally figured out what it was. There's a setting called "dead zone" in the setup menu, which refers to the square in the center of the screen that the mouse can move within freely without panning the view. Apparently, that switch only moves so long as your mouse is moving within the dead zone. However, I turned the dead zone off because I think it sucks, so the switch was frozen stuck when I was playing..

Anyone else notice that the junctions along the paths are five-sided? Wonder if there's a connection between the vanished inhabitants of Channelwood and the people of Riven, who incorporate "fiveness" in everything they do.

Not sure if you are joking or not, but the power switch on the water pump does still work, you just cant stand too close to it. :)

This was the last age I found on my first play.
I think the other order was:
    Stoneship
    Mechanical
    Seleantic

Well, I'm not messing with it anymore. 8x AA performs well so whatever it spits out is whatever we're gonna get. Any other setting, even lower ones, reduce fps; I think I already told you that.

  • @shadyparadox

No, the problem is that Channelwood is too detailed for the video compression. For prime quality, I would need to encode the videos around 20-25Mbps. The problem is, XVID doesn't allow higher than 10Mbps. And that is a moot point anyway, since RUclips is taking my XVID video and running a second conversion which lowers the quality even further.
I can tell you that the decompressed capture files look great, but there's no way I can post them. There's not really anything I can do.

um... but I don't think we're talking about the same thing. On the bridges, you can see quite noticably the jaggies and aliasing on the wires. If the video was lower quality, if anything it's be LESS sharp, REDUCING jaggies.

if you back up a little ways you can pull the jammed switch fully down.

So, I've got to retract my earlier sentiments regarding this LP, it just took some adjustment on my part. I had gotten used to a certain style of LP, and was taken off guard by this one. It is good on its own merits though, and I've enjoyed watching it.

You realize what a waste of energy that is?
the windmill just pumps the water up only to be poured at a low volume into the barrel; then only the force of gravity powers all that stuff on the map, even the elevator taking you to the 3rd very high story.
Riven was the same way only not quite as bad.

Is it just me, or have you turned down the anti-aliasing amount? (to say, maybe 4x?) Either that or for those thin wires you really do need something like 16x...

I don't think this age is as good as any of the other Myst ages, to be honest. There just isn't enough to it, not a particularly interesting landscape with lots of manmade/natural interaction like Selenitic, nor fun machines like Mechanical, nor a dark, *myst*erious atmosphere like Stoneship and Rime. The lack of changing sunlight is also a let-down, though I guess the perpetual darkness of Rime balances it out.
