Let's Play Myst III: Exile - Part 1 of 34

- Let the journey begin. I get rather wordy in this one, since there's a whole lot to explain here at the beginning. But I imagine it will pick up as we move along.
I recommend watching these videos on either 480p or 720p if you can; the audio quality is much nicer than 360p. And I have since fixed a mic issue, so starting in Part 7, I no longer sound like I'm on the radio.

I come back to this every now and then, and I'm never dissapointed. This is without a doubt the best playthrough of any game on youtube that I've seen. It just has a charm to it that you seem to pull off; it's both funny and explanatory and I love it.
Agreed - beautiful game and great commentary!
I still have the full boxed PC version of this classic that I purchased years ago.. Not just that, but I have the very thick strategy guide 'book that came with it, plus a bonus CD 'Myst' Soundtrack, plus a CD called 'The Making of Myst', plus and finally a 'Myst' user manual. I am just starting to get back into this wonderful game.
What amazes me to this day is that back when full boxed PC games were the norm, adventure games like 'Myst' 3' used real FULL ORCHESTRAS' to provide the soundtracks. That would never happen now. The attention to detail is second to none in many full boxed PC games back then, and this does not disappoint in any way shape or form.
Sounds like you have the Collector's Edition, I have that as well. Did it not also come with a pewter squee toy?
I've played MYST III so many times, watched the let's plays but I keep coming back to this one! And well, frankly Myst III is my top favourite among all the MYST games.
Watching this a second time now. One of the best playthoughs on youtube!
I just wanted to thank you for this! I played Exile a long time ago and loved it, but it currently won't play on my computer. This was the closest I could get to playing it again and you kept me entertained on this wonderful ride back through this world. Awesome!
I must say, Exile is my all-time Myst favorite out of them all. It's the most symbolic, the Ages are unique, and the story is more...historical than the rest. It's a downward slope for 4 and 5. Thanks for the LP, shady!
You finally started! Excellent! I've been excited for this LP for months! Good work so far.
i love your lp's because you know exactly what you're playing and give info to the audience really good job keep it up!
Great to see you're finally getting started on this. I look forward to seeing how you approach this game.
Impressive and thorough walkthrough. Well done
Shady, this is the second venture I have watched you play and I must say you have kept me so entertained. I love your wit my friend. Thanks for making these videos.
this is good stuff, thank you for taking the time and doing this game justice.
Epic! I'm so glad you've taken up another game to LP. This was truly a pleasant surprise in my subscription box. Eagerly awaiting more vids ;)
Oh yes! I've been very much looking forward to this.
Awesome! Thank you so much for this, been waiting for ages :D
YES! I found it again!
I was playing another puzzle game and I remembered watching this a while back but I couldn’t remember your username. Well luckily there aren’t many Exile playthroughs around so it was easy to find.
Your commentary is still as entertaining as I remember 😁
Welcome back! I may have uploaded this a decade ago, but I'm just now playing Myst IV for the first time. I stream on Saturdays if you want to tune in.
shadyparadox
Thanks for the reply 🙂
I just started MYST IV as well recently so I won’t be watching you play that any time soon.
And... I won’t watch your streams any time soon either. Would if I could but my my phone AND my computer can’t comprehend streaming(🙄). They’re old.
this was my favorite myst.
*****
riven is absolutely the best one hands down :|
***** definitely a fair assessment. It's funny, I like Riven more overall because of its design/ambiance/ambition/cohesiveness... and yet I enjoy playing myst 3 way more hahaha. I think you're right, I like the colour scheme variation and maybe the puzzles are just a bit more... I dunno logical and fun or something.
*****
God.... 4 had a lot of cool puzzle moments and had the BEST pre-rendered graphics, but everything you mentioned definitely ruined it haha. I dream of re-rendered higher resolution and higher resolution textures for Riven and Myst, and even implementing the 360 degree nodal system for Riven and Myst (I hate the real-time 3D in realmyst and myst 5). What'd you think of 5? I didn't even touch it because I dislike the real-time 3D so much, but maybe I'm not giving it a fair chance.
fordxbgtfalcon This was the EASIEST one.
personally i prefer the original, but that may just be that it was the first game i ever played
YES! I'm so glad you decided to do Exile!
In my school we are playing MYST III Exile
YEESHA!
And thus, one of my favorite characters in the Myst series is introduced to us. She's one of the reasons why Myst IV is my favorite out of the entire series ^^
I believe the reason the stranger has no face is because, It is meant to place you there in the world as the stranger, to further immerse yourself and have you feel like your actually "the stranger", going around everywhere and solving things like a boss.
As a side note, the opening music is epic.
I loved this game. Brings back good memories when me and my father would sit by the computer (screw catch) and play the game. Sometimes I would be like "I think I got this." and solve it, other times he would. Heh, we kept a notebook on clues and shiz. Oh those were the times. You sir, made my day. :)
YES! This is a fantastic game. I know I'm gonna love this LP.
this is beyond Nostalgic for me
This would be fun to try in VR..
Different actresses and the actress playing Catherine in Riven was actually dubbed by another. The funny thing is the voice actress was brought back to voice Yeesha in Uru and End of Ages.
Are Atrus' opening words "I realized, as our group linked back to D'ni, that we should not restore the city as we had planned" a reference to the Myst line "I realized, the moment I fell into the fissure, that the Book would not be destroyed as I had planned."?
I'm playing this with my google cardboard now. ..awesome!!
mrSlampamper that’s fucking awesome
@@robbieeason1898 hi
Yay!~ Finally!~ I've been waiting for this video to come out. I know that other users have probably uploaded a Let's Play Myst III: Exile series but shadyparadox is just so much better. XD Just makes the game so much more interesting than other's who say "Then you click this, then that..." without any analysis of how they got there or any explanation of the storyline itself. I love the Myst games and read the books but the games are hard for me to figure out. Heh heh
@Mrgahoolefan They're called "The Book of Atrus" (Atrus's backstory), "The Book of Ti'ana" (the fall of D'ni), and "The Book of D'ni" (a brief glimpse at how D'ni could have gone, but mostly a prequel to the Exile game). You can also get the Myst Reader, which has all three of these in a single paperback volume. I warn you, though, there's a couple gaffes, and since they're kinda by the people who made Myst, they start all dull and sciencey before getting to the juicy stuff.
Did anyone bother to listen carefully at the intro music from 2:58 on? "Tomahna! Edanna! Amateria, Voltaic, Narayan!" Blew my mind.
Never actually played all the way through this game, but the graphics were absolutely stunning for the time it was released.
I wanted to thank me because it helped me to finish the game! thanks to your videos! T.H.A.N.K.S!!!!!
@shadyparadox lol that's so funny, I just happened to watch his videos after yours, had no idea you were both doing them "together" you both do great jobs showing the games off, just finished his Riven videos and plan on watching this series next, thanks for making these, its a great way to get the story without having to solve all the puzzles...which I know sounds lame but I know I'll just use a walk through so I may as well just watch someone else do it and learn about it simultaneously
2:58
I LOVE that intro music.
best myst 3 walkthrough ever...
YES!! I've been waiting for another LP from you.
Ironic that you chose the one with the Da'ni, because my friend and I are learning how to speak it. (We're both really big myst fans.)
Atrus: he'll damn well padlock half a house, but forget childproofing the dead murderbook that would dump baby Yeesha into oblivion...
"However as the striking flight attendants novels"
Oh jeez, haha
God I loved the sound track to this game!
I agree and Riven's too was amazing. When I heard Robyn was doing Obduction I was instantly stoked but was very disappointed with the results. Riven was great music that bordered on sound that really conjured up a lot of mystery which Obduction totally lacked.
What’s cool is the chorus in the opening song are in fact singing the names of Ages in the game.
Maan oh man, do I remember when that was the ubisoft logo. Suddenly memories.
the myst series was so cool. Riven was my first myst although i would watch my dad play the 1st myst.
Actually, I take back what I said about Myst III being the trigger for the collapse of the series. The REAL trigger for all of that was Myst IV.
You know what else is creepy? ...they got a slightly different Catherine.
The music in this one is terrific. There was so little music in the first two.
You're a really good commentator dude. 10/10
If I had to guess, from the way that Riven ended The Stranger grabbed the book that Catherine and Atrius used to get away since it went into the Star Rift. Either he just decided to visit or somehow Atrius sent him notice to come. Still, I think he went to where you start this game through that book.
yay! it´s finished!!!!
1:16 - "The stranger isn't given a distinct face or voice."
Depends on the person who's playing the game, or making the LP of the game.
That strategy guide backstory makes no sense when the Myst intro clearly shows the Linking Book landing at your feet in the middle of the night.
Great stream today, Shady!
Great wonderful.
Cool vid!!!
PS- but Chi Miigwech (Thank you very much) for taking the time and effort to make and share these videos. Peace
You NEED to upload Myst ll... I was looking for it for a long time!
My teacher played this for creative writing, we had to describe the current scene, it was really fun
Alice Fluan that’s cool as hell
Same Alice : P creative writing idea, MYST 3
LOL that's true
and u always do a nice job :)
best myst game in the series
That one was called Riven: The sequel to Myst
I guess Atrus needs to write a description book describing a post office with cheap stamps.
I was kid when i played this game on ps2.It was creepy af
the lizard under the rock scares me.
Any scene with Catherine in this game still bugs the heck out of me since you know she suddenly looks and sounds completely different than she did last time we met her.
I don't think I can get those books at my local library, and I don't want to buy them just yet. Got any other suggestions?
This game is FUCKING beautiful!
I would just like to comment that even though this LP is nearly ten years old, I'm enjoying it immensely. I would very much like to be able to commentate like you do at some point.
Thanks!
Also, your timing is better than you think. I'm releasing a video today (finally) addressing people's questions as to whether I might make a Riven series some day. Based on your comment, I think you might like the series I'm currently working on.
Great Game, thanks for this playthrough. I think Cathrine is shaking Yeesha far too long ... poor child!
Presto Studios did a fantastic job on this one, it seems.
Catherine is from Riven
well in Myst 1 you did find the linking book to Myst at a library
Does anyone know if thetopcrusader2 ever continued his Riven video? I watched them a while back, but as far as I know, he hasn't gotten past three videos.
@ShadyParadox I gave my " Myst III: Exile " Xbox 360 version to a friend of mine cause I got motion sickness from the roller coaster ride and the ending was sad. :(
I just realized, the letter to Tamon is in English, even though he's D'ni and had no reason to learn English. Maybe _that's_ why Atrus hasn't sent the letter.
MUNDO GOES WHERE HE PLEASES LADY!
I mostly only like the first Island with the spectral puzzle.
I thought the two were destroyed.
Re: This is so Atrius can look at his fingernail clippings
Shadyparadox you are funny. That's why I'm watching your play through on this game.
Yea! He is super hilarious!
"I do as I please, lady!!!
...ah fine..."
@Sailor11Sedna Can you get these books at the library?
Anyone know what language is used for the singing part of Myst 3: Exile ?
I'm pretty sure it's Narayani.
J.B. Lewis Oke
@shadyparadox
Not fair. =( We want you to do the 4th part!
Have you tried playing Riven lately? Assuming you can get it to run properly on your PC, (This includes having to install a much older version of Quicktime.) The frame rate / choppy graphics all around
will make your eyes bleed.
Where do you find these Myst novels? What are their titles?
"Mmmm yes, yes indeed... Wait who said that?!"
i will be doing a LP of myst III
8:08 am I the only one seeing the assassin's creed logo on the lower right wooden box?
lol you click on the book minizes and comes up with a window saying "Please insert disc 1 of Riven"
"The student loan system misses Clinton relationship with China" lol
I feel sorry for the deaf people who use the CC, they must be confused as hell XD
Must... play...
Wait a minute ... just how old IS Catherine, anyway? She was sirrus and Achenar's mother, too, wasn't she? And they were grown men in the first game. Now it's ten years later ... she's gotta be WELL past forty. Time's been astonishingly kind to her.
and shady are you going to play uru chronicles its alot like real myst
Can someone link me a sans commentary playthrough of Exile? I can't seem to find one.
ahhhh i love this game:) i have it somewhere inside the houseXD so im going to look for it and find it and install it on my neeeeeeeeeew pc!:D
Horray! Now I just gotta wait for the quality to improve
one time i was warching my dad play myst and he need help with a passageway.i just clicked on any random direction and i got into the end of the maze. so i have a special connection with thais game.
Obviously, S & A burned the books linking the ages except for the 4 associated with the ages we went to in the original Myst, is that correct?
That is the premise of the original game. But Cyan also figured Myst would be their last game at the time, so I'm guessing this is why they initially limited themselves to this premise. But once the franchise took off beyond their wildest dreams, Presto later had to fudge with the idea a bit to make room for sequel plots.
Your narration was great. I'm wonder, do you have a plan to make "let's play myst IV" ?
I wouldn't say it's very likely at this point, considering I still haven't played the game yet. I want to get back into making content for this channel though, and once my audience comes back I'd at least like to do a live stream of me actually trying to solve the puzzles.
Then if I think the game has potential for an LP like this... maybe? As much as people want me to play Myst IV, the demand is even higher for Riven. If I was to make another LP of a game in this series, that would be next. But I'd also like to wait for the Starry Expanse remake to come out, since the 3D environments allow for more creativity in the presentation.
my fav still was riven
even if some puuzles drove me near insanity
Cool game!!!We play this in my class at school on Thursday after lunch!I find you helpfull by me telling the rest of my class were to go in the game.We are in the house I'll tell them we need to follow some instructions from the book.from Sophia age 8 year 4 Pixmore junior school lgc.I hope you ask where I am right now in the game at school and we can be best of friends!
Shady's game is much clearer and helpful. He makes his walkthroughs much more exciting to watch
I....love...you!
I kind of wish you had done Riven first before Exile to be in order but I like Exile.
