Game Description:
Myst IV: Revelation is the fourth installment in the Myst video game series, developed and published by Ubisoft. Revelation was the first game in the series released on a DVD-ROM format; a multiple CD-ROM version was not produced as it would have taken twelve compact discs to fit the data. Like Myst III: Exile, Revelation combines pre-rendered graphics with digital video, but also features real-time 3D effects for added realism.
The plot of Revelation ties up loose ends from the original Myst. The player is summoned by Atrus, a man who creates links to other worlds known as Ages by writing special linking books. Almost twenty years earlier, Atrus' two sons nearly destroyed all of his linking books and were imprisoned; Atrus now wishes to see if his sons' imprisonment has reformed them. The player ends up traveling to each brother's prison, in an effort to recover Atrus' daughter Yeesha from the brothers' plot.
Development of Revelation lasted more than three years; Ubisoft had as many as eighty employees working on the game. Musician Peter Gabriel lent his voice and a song to the game's audio; the original score was written by Exile's composer Jack Wall. Overall, reception to the game was positive; reviewers lauded the impressive visuals, sound, and puzzles. Publications such as Computer Gaming World took issue with the control scheme of the game. Revelation is the last game in the Myst series to use both prerendered backgrounds and full-motion video; the final game in the series, End of Ages, is rendered in real-time throughout.
Myst IV: Revelation is an adventure game in which the player experiences gameplay from the eyes of an unnamed protagonist referred to as the Stranger. Players explore interactive worlds known as Ages by using the mouse or keyboard, solving puzzles and uncovering the game's narrative. Players cannot move freely across each Age; instead, as in the previous games in the Myst series, they travel by clicking set locations called "nodes", where players can rotate their view in any direction. Revelation also features a "Zip" mode, which allows a method of rapidly crossing explored areas by skipping intermediate nodes; areas that can be instantly traveled to are stored as thumbnail representations for rapid movement across Ages.
The mouse cursor helps to provide visual cues for player actions and movement. The cursor appears as a hand that changes depending on what the player is hovering the cursor over. For example, to move in a direction, the cursor changes to point in the intended direction. If players can view an item in greater detail, the cursor changes to a hand holding a magnifying glass. By clicking and dragging the cursor, the player performs actions such as pushing, pulling, and tapping items.
Revelation features several gameplay enhancements that aid puzzle solving and plot progression. Early in the game, players receive a camera, which can be used to take screenshots or pictures of clues. Players can use an on-screen journal to jot down notes instead of having to write down clues as with previous Myst games. Much of the game's story is revealed via flashbacks triggered by an amulet that has the power to relay memories attached to objects. Zip mode, the amulet, the camera, and the journal are available via a menu on the bottom of the game screen. - Игры
I like the implication that Atrus is so used to living in a state of constant jurry-rigging and DIY that he just casually asks his friend to do his electric maintenance like it's the most normal thing in the world.
"Hey Stranger, long time no see. I've gotta go pick my screwdriver _from a world I created._ Sandwiches are in the kitchen, do fix my nuclear reactor while I'm gone, kay?"
@@DavidRay39 I hate that design decision. It takes all the "magic" out of the universe.
@@Welther47 I don't really buy it anyway. How do they make changes to the Ages, but they didn't/don't create them? That makes no sense. My head canon is that they absolutely do create the worlds, but Atrus has a different perspective to keep him from letting his ego run wild like some other people we know...
@@nethrelm I agree. Just like holy texts there are way too many "holes" in it to hold water.
But it IS canon that they don't create the world; remember Gehn was "evil" because he thought so.
It's not just Atrus who thinks so. Aitrus (Gehn's father) notes that it's a D'ni sin to think they create and consider oneself a god because of it.
@@Welther47 Yes, the holy texts example is appropriately similar. Sometimes a culture believes something (even if it's false) because it serves a function in society. So for the D'ni, saying you create these worlds is a "sin" because of the consequences that can follow from such a belief. It doesn't matter if it's true as long as it makes people behave.
@@nethrelm Yes, the truth doesn't matter as much as people like to think. Sometimes, it's more important what people think.
@15:57 I think the tapping on things was meant as way to increase immersion because everything you tap on sounds different depending on what it's made out of so tapping on glass sounds like glass, tapping on metal sounds like metal and tapping on wood sounds like wood but it also kind of feels like a substitute for not many things to interact with.
Somebody asked Team Revelation for a skin color option for the hand cursor and they must have been like _"Skin_ color? Great idea, but why would we stop at colors of skin?"
Atrus: Catherine believes our sons should be released, but I need an objective opinion
The player: My opinion is no, nope, don't, do not, never, absolutely not ever in a billion years.
(end game, credits roll)
I barely remember this one. It came out less than a year after URU. Man, I played URU Live from it's initial beta release; I remember everyone waiting for new areas to become available. There was much excitement when they first gave us access to the Great Zero (which didn't actually do anything at first). There was so much excitement with everyone working together to learn all we could of the D'ni language and culture, getting a piece here and there. It was like Riven on steroids (from an anthropological point of view). RAWA personally came online fairly often and assisted. It was an awesome time to be a Myst fan. And then the day came when they announced that they were shutting down the servers... We all hung out in (a very laggy) Bevin and had a kind of farewell party. RAWA was there, and I recall Tim Larkin was as well. Rand might have stopped by at one point, but I think he was pretty busy desperately trying to save the project. Sorry for the stroll down memory lane. It just holds a special place in my heart. I felt like I was part of something worthwhile -- an extended family of sorts -- even if it was just a video game.
But I don't really remember liking this one too much. The hand cursor movement and animations are awkward and sluggish, and there is no option to adjust the transition speeds which _really_ sucks. Also, while it's nice to have a better resolution, there is no aspect ratio adjustments so you end up with a stretched view on modern systems. From my memory and going through the beginning stuff on Tomahna, I would say this was my least favorite in the series, but I'm replaying it right now too (along with all the others), so we'll see.
I love Keith rambling while Yeesha is trying to get him to take a picture! 😂😂😂
that desktop is just👌👏👏👏👏👏👏
I'm surprised. Myst 4 isn't as popular amongst Myst fans as the other games, but it's still good to have a Let's Play of it.
definitely . i have never played it (only ever played through Riven) so i like seeing what the rest have to offer.
At least your audience isn;t into Final Fantasy.
I'm pretty sure my Type-0 and XV playthroughs alienated any Final Fantasy fans that were left.
Wow, that wallpaper though
I remember to have tried to play this game many years ago (I loved Myst III, kind of a nostalgia game for me) and gave up soon, but I did get past this part. The commentary by Atrus is so incredibly high-frequent and annoying though that it's become a running-gag between my brother and me, and I know exactly how it sounds like if he says some of these lines in german. It also taught me what amplitude, phase, and frequency mean for sine-curves, and studying media engineering got me to get them down intuitively, so yes, you're right, there are people who look at that and know what's happening, but the addition of two curves is a tough thing to do intuitively, so this is definitely something to do by trial & error even for people who know the basics.
Atrus doesn't look 20 years older because the D'ni aren't technically human. They live to be around 200 years old, and they age more slowly as a result.
Mystery Solved!
Though he is only 1/4 D'ni so his life span isn't the same as other D'ni.
@@myst600 but he is alive, but old in Myst 5...in 2005
@@elgeniomaestro indeed, where he is already well past 200, which could be a result of mixed blood.
@@elgeniomaestro Too bad that Myst 5 is The End of The Games
Lol sorry Keith. I love Uru, but it's best to play it last in the series.
It is indeed best to play last, since it's storyline is the most recent in terms of the in game date (not sure on the specifics or if it's in any way said by cyan but I'd say at least 1980 is the date and you are not playing "The Stranger"
Obduction.
By "play it last" do you mean "skip Myst V"? Because...yeah, actually I'm okay with that.
@@rynnziolkowski4642 actually, Uru is the second to last
More or less the games go like this
Myst 1812
Riven late 1812 or early 1813
Myst 3 1814 or 1815
Myst 4 1822
Uru 2003
Myst 5 2005
@@elgeniomaestro that’s a short time skip between 4 and Uru
You played 3 games and still ain't calling Atrus by the right name.
So excited to watch you play this series!
Hollow Knight was in third it looks like? Not bad. It's time will come soon, I hope.
Specifically, I hope when the final free DLC pack comes out and he can play it all at once. :D
I really want to see his reaction to the grubfather saga
YUSSSS, a great way to start off the new year :D
Oh my gooododododododood YES
I PLAYED THIS GAME AS A KID AND I COULDN'T REMEMBER THE NAME UNTIL NOW
Putting the resolution all the way up seems to have cropped the recording rather than stretching. It's cutting off the bottom line of subtitles and the top of the image perspective. Hope that gets fixed in later videos. Excited to see you play this one though, be glad you got those patches.. theres a certain puzzle that was nearly impossible without them.
Yeah I hope he noticed by next episode or so.
Unfortunately, Keith is pretty adamant on not looking at comments for puzzle games, so he might not see this.
I just love your little live camera rant thing at the beginning.
And we start afresh!
I honestly had no idea URU was older than Myst IV. I think most people think of it as coming after, because it's plot is chronologically after Myst IV, so that's why everyone voted for Myst IV first. I'm really hoping URU and Myst V will have their moment to shine after this.
@8:45 Yeah that cursor reminds me of the hand in the box on the Adams Family. I forget what they called it.
That desktop background is amazing.
I don't know if you have figured that out by now, but if you haven't or for anyone else running into the problem that the resolution is 4:3 but the monitor displays a stretched version I'll post this anyway.
What aspect ratio fullscreen games get displayed at is a monitor setting, not a game or system setting. (It should be, but that's a different issue.) Open the on screen display of your monitor with the hardware buttons on it, and from there you should eventually find a setting that let's you set the display aspect ratio to "Auto" or "Automatic" or "Detected" or something like that, or you can try fiddling with the video-mode/video-display-mode, which should have an "aspect ratio" or "screen ratio" or "detected" setting. All of these can sometimes be hidden deep in random menus because fuck standards or whatever. It allows the monitor to introduce black bars if the image wouldn't fit otherwise.
Unless you are using a really old monitor, this should also not interfere with any other games or whatever else you are doing on your computer. Sadly, this fix only works for stuff that runs in exclusive fullscreen mode. Borderless window applications are not allowed to interfere with screen resolutions and aspect ratio.
I don't know why not all monitors do that automatically. Back in the day you used to get wrong screen resolutions if you didn't set your monitor to the correct aspect ratio, but current display drivers and monitors are pretty good about communicating to the OS what resolutions/aspect ratios they support.
and atrus is like: can you find me some red and blue pages?
Just watching these, so addicting
A bit of trivia. Peter Gabriel voices the Spirit
Dang, Opus Magnum wasn't even close lol. Have you tried it on your own time yet? It's great fun
"No, no, move over! Let me do this..." - classic group troubleshooting with Atrus.
Furrier transformation, really nice to see in a game what you learn at engineering degree
Atrus is part D'ni. D'ni live about 300 years. That's why he still looks so young.
Try moving the slider.
A Myst Question.
Years ago when Myst came out, it was the only sort of game I liked, so I played them all (ok, not without some help from other gamers).
Anyway I remember two others that don't get a mention anywhere, so either I have a smudged memory or they got dropped.
First was one that I am sure was pre-myst, but was part of the same world. Starting in the desert (not unlike Uru) but there was a small town, where the adventure began. Apart from that all I really remember was a bearded man in the opening credits saying {somthing, a warning not to go in I think} then screaming and you never saw him again.
Then there was another one, I know Altrus and Catherine were in this one, in a large house (mansion-like), the only puzzle I can remember is listening to a tune playing in the background and you had to copy the tune on a piano, I am tone deaf so never managed that part and there wasn't internet help about it, so it's as far as I got in that particular game.
So, I wonder if anyone remembers these two games.
I think you are somewhat confused with other adventure games and other Myst games, the piano puzzle sounds just like the puzzle to enter selenitic in the first game
Love this game!
So I got frustrated with the wave sine puzzle, but if you quit out from the puzzle, Atrus turns to you and chuckles, saying "Oh, come now, it's not that hard!" and then all the equipment explodes anyways. I didn't realize the puzzle was solvable!
I mean, I've got nothing against Myst as puzzle game, but Opus Magnum is puzzle game as well and it has just recently been released. I really hope and wish Keith, that you would at least do some research and maybe consider making Opus Magnum non-Patreon chosen game. Pretty please :)
Great recommendation, I'm loving it personally and I voted for it (but also voted for Myst)
I got burned out on it after playing through the campaign. Optimizing a solution often leads you to the same couple of patters that you just mix and match for whatever specific shape you need until you have it either perfect or near perfect. Optimizing solutions in general is rather dull, because you rarely have to invent a new way of handling something. Just adding extra arms at choke points for example brings down most solutions to the top couple percent, and that is hardly a puzzle.
I was hoping for the game to introduce more mechanics of handling things. Teleporters, conveyor belts, copy machines, etc. Something to mix up the formula a bit. Maybe they will in the future, and I will gladly come back if they do.
Every Myst game after Riven got Katran wrong. Especially this game. Katran was awesome in Riven and The Book of Atrus. Really my only complaint about Riven is that we didn't get a scene where Katran confronts Gehn.
This game pushed pre-rendered graphics to their limit.
uru comes after revelation anyways, so chronologically everything the community voted on was played in order so far :p
Quick! Redo the vote! XD
We need the Uru!
Don't worry, we'll get to Uru, but thematically it works best after Myst V.
It takes place after Myst V, though. What makes you say that?
*before, actually
Resolution and compression aside, it’s incredible how good this game still looks. Because most of the game is panoramic, I wonder if it would be possible to hack the game to render in 16:9 without stretching the image. Obviously, any still screens and cutscenes would still have to be displayed in 4:3, but that’s not a huge drawback.
Atrus is a quarter D'ni. They live to about 360 years. They barely age.
omg i rage so much on the wave puzzle LOL
the only myst game i haven't seen any of
It is worth pointing out that UbiSoft had not yet started to gargle horse testicles when Myst IV came out.
Uru is actually supposed to be a prequel to Myst 4, also I love Uru by it switches play still and puzzle formulation so it way different than the other Myst games.
Wtf? Uru is set in 2003
Myst 4 is set in 1822, more or less
the patrions dont appreciate the greatness that is sorcery!
@22:50 I bet this puzzle would have been a lot better without Atrius's input. Just leave me alone and let me figure it out damn it, Atrius you back seat gamer.
Oh nooo. I can only hope you end up liking this game more than I do. If not, try not to let it sour you on Uru.
I was really hoping for Orwell, it’s such a fun and interesting game
TheDerpyGuy229 same :(
This looks like a QuickTime VR game.
timeline wise uru comes AFTER revlations
I want to see you play URU. I really want it. Please patreon friends.
The hand is so distracting because you changed it from default color to the white color option dud :-P
ACTUALLY Keith. Uru takes place AFTER Myst 4, making Myst 4 a prequil.
And after by A LOT, Myst 4 is set in the 1800s and Uru in 2003
It started going down hill with IV. I couldn't even finish this one
You have 45k subscribers? Since when?!
I mean that's not an insult. I just never realized. For some reason I remember you being around 30k
I remember 7k or 8k)
Owww, SV got second. #Sad
See you on the next patreon let's play.
@11:00 Wow, you failed at the camera. Don't worry the puzzles do get easier. lol
I think that sound wave puzzle is the worst Myst puzzle ever and, like, maybe in any puzzle game lol
Doesn't Atrus sound way more australian in this one?
Not sure I'd say that, but he definitely doesn't sound quite like himself. He sounds more like Rand Miller when he isn't doing Atrus' voice. Like he kind of phoned it in on this one or something (which wouldn't surprise me since Cyan wasn't very involved in this game and were busy with URU at the time -- and Rand has never liked acting).
Hollow Knight got close and Danganronpa was not on the list anymore, i still have hope (the future is in the eye of the lasagna).
Play NaissanceE and Kairo.
I'd say I'm shocked, but I'm really not, the patreon guys know whats up.
Did someone say hiveswap? Sad it didn't get as many votes.
As much as puzzle games and myst games are good I kinda hope we run out soon. Something not Myst or Zelda next patron after this would rock. Just hopes. Still gonna watch.
Kayleb Lang same man
THIS, so much. But I'm just happy it's not Zelda because I don't like/watch that series.
Yeah I'm getting a little sick of the same kind of stuff over and over
If Zelda ends up winning next month I swear to god I'm going to track down every single patron who voted for it and punch them.
Gotta get that Myst out of our systems first before we can go on ;)
Myst pun spam.
I guessed i almost mysted you
cyan then
I had a revelation
I been exiled to an age
I guess my age has ended *dies*
There is no one that is like U, because URU
The Star Fissure rivened apart [thats not even a pun, that happens in riven eyyyyyyyy]
I guess thats a MYSTery
Sorry i did this, i was talking to a online friend but they had to go to bed when i messaged them. and then said that first pun and now im here lol.
Myst won? Ho wow, did not see that one coming /s
People suggesting Xenoblade 2 over the first one. Alright then. Let's make Keith play a game he will HATE for 100 hours, that sure sounds like a fun time.
Really hope Hollow Knight will make it someday when people get bored of Mysts and Zeldas.
They have to run out of Zelda and Myst games eventually. But until then, nostalgia rules I guess.
It's only a matter of time heh heh heeeeh....
My only mention of Xenoverse 2 so far was "looking at this game makes me irrationally angry", so naturally is showed up in nominations the next chance it had.
@@KeithBallardA Hey is For Horses
ahahaha
okay
I really like Yeesha in the URU games but this kid seems nothing like her.
Can’t anybody find the slider? LOL
OK, the little button says Not Playing Disk 2. I put in both disks and it still doesn't play. Now, the computer is telling me I have to log in again as the Administrator. Guess what? I AM the Administrator, no one else has ever used this computer! 8 Gigs of disk space wasted, I will have to delete it.
This is why I stopped buying PC games years ago. They don't work (or you need a degree in Computer Science to get them to run) or they're designed for college sophomores with endless free time! By the way, I uploaded the original Myst on my Dad's computer - and it displayed upside down! Go fix that, huh? I'm real impressed.......
Zelda fans, we must unite and make this a Zelda channel with all Zelda games, even the CDI ones............ Just kidding you only have to play 2 of the CDI games. I'm not that heartless😋
I wish I could do the patreon thing. Twilight Princess is a really underrated game in my opinion and I would like to see your opinion on it as a fairly newcomer to Zelda. :( oh well.... maybe next time
NO
The game is Okay, in my opinion. The tutorial is brutal though. It's my seceond most hated Zelda game. My most hated is majora's mask. Not because it's a bad game, but because timed stuff really stresses me out.
Niralam Sandhu maybe it's just nostalgia that makes me like it so much. It was the first zelda game I was able to play and beat on my own
Hollow Knight lost again, curses! :P
Oh wonderful! You found my wallet great can you send that back to me please? :-)

We have the same nes wallet
Myst IV is not my favorite Myst game. I find the animated cursor to be really annoying and the puzzles suffer from poor and inconsistent controls.
To be far you can't play an old MMO
You can, actually. mystonline.com/en/
Keith Ballard oh cool. i had no idea.
The graphics were good. I just didn't like the amount of puzzles the game had vs the story. The puzzle count was way too much. The game had a lot of puzzle bugs also. Really hard to complete some of them in a timed manner.
hi
*sigh* looks like another lp I'm not watching.
