    Transcript:
    More than 10,000 years ago, a race known as the D'ni arrive on Earth, descendants of an ancient race that wrote magical books that could serve as portals to the worlds they described. The D'ni built great cities in underground caverns which were discovered by a geologist from the surface. This geologist, Anna, learns the D'ni language and lives among them, marrying Aitrus and bearing a son named Gehn. But soon after, the thriving civilization is wiped out by a plague, and Aitrus sacrifices himself to save his family who escape to the surface.
    Gehn has a son of his own, Atrus who is raised by Anna while Gehn travels to the ruins of the D'ni civilization to learn the art of writing portal books known as Ages. After obtaining the knowledge of the Art, Gehn becomes power-hungry, a cruel god in his own right to the inhabitants of the very Ages he created. Atrus, realizing his father has become reckless and violent, attempts to escape but is imprisoned in Gehn's own Age of Riven. There, Atrus falls in love with a villager, Catherine, and together, they hatch a plan to rid themselves of Gehn once and for all.
    Atrus and Catherine manage to destroy the linking books on Riven, leaving Gehn stranded on Riven, and escape through a book written by Anna, the Age of Myst. Atrus inexplicably drops the Myst linking book into a disturbance known as the Star Fissure, at which point the book ends up on Earth in the hands of a stranger. Now with the Age of Myst in hand, it's up to you to point and click your way through the wonders of Myst Island and all the secrets it holds.
    Have fun!

    Atrus doesn't "inexplicably drop the Myst linking book" at all. He uses the linking book over the Star Fissure so when he entered Myst the book would fall in, assuming it would be destroyed.

      Aardvark4lunch But he realized, the moment He fell into the fissure, that the book would not be destroyed as He had planned. It continued falling into that starry expanse of which He had only a fleeting glimpse. He has tried to speculate where it might have landed, but He must admit, however- such conjecture is futile. Still, the question of whose hands might someday hold his Myst book is unsettling to him. He knows that his apprehensions might never be allayed, and so He closes, realizing that perhaps, the ending has not yet been written.

      See, help me on this. The ending confused the crap out of me when I beat Riven at 10 or 11 years old.
      Why didn’t Atrius let the player return to D’ni and Myst with him? Like, immediately after thanking us for our aid, it felt like he betrayed us too! Now that I’m older, I suppose the Star Fissure was the only bridge between the world we came from and everything he knew (there were no known “earth” linking books), and the Star Fissure is supposed to not be deadly... but it still doesn’t make sense! Assuming it took a few hours or days for our player character to find the D’ni book in the Myst fireplace, in a broader sense there was 30 years elapsed from the Myst book was lost!
      Atrius has no way of knowing how much of that time was spent with the Myst Linking Book lying on earth compared to how much time it spent falling through space. We could easily die of asphyxiation, dehydration, or starvation! dehydration! Furthermore, Atrius never saw the condition of the Myst book when we found it, we have no way of knowing how much impact damage happens after traversing the rift! Does the fissure only “fall” in one direction at a speed slower than falling off a tall cliff (the gravitational velocity we would have gained from falling ought to be enough to kill us too)? From Ghen’s journals studying the Star Fissure, we can deduce that he’s studied it more than anyone else, and his test subjects fell out of observable sight with a microscope (presumably with lights attached to ease observation?).
      Finally, Atrius should know that the caverns of D’ni are geographically attached to our earth, sooooo we could’ve just gone back to D’ni and walked home. I’ll give Cyan a pass on this though, because Uru hadn’t been made yet (with the lore stating D’ni is underground on Earth), but overall it still seems like a contrived twist to make a memorable ending. Please tell me I’m wrong and don’t know something, I’ve only played the first three Myst games (cuz I only played them on Mac)!

      @@evshrug One thing to note is that the player never speaks and is seemingly mute. So Atrus would have no way of actually knowing that you are from earth and you simply are able to understand him for whatever reason. Also if you look at the people of Riven they look indistinguishable from humans so the idea that you could be from any age and not just Earth is quite possible. Given this information the only for sure age Atrus could send you back to was whatever age linked up to the Star Fissure.
      As far as the other points some of them can be resolved and some of them can not. First off, Atrus realizes that the Star Fissure has oxygen from his time falling into it. Also he knows this to be doubly true by the fact that if it was truly space then Riven would have been destroyed upon them initially opening it to trap Gehn (kinda happens later but the age was already collapsing at this point) As far as freezing to death depending on how quickly he linked while being in the fissure he might have been able to determine if it is save or not in that aspect. The ones obviously he has no way of knowing is of course the impact velocity upon landing and also how long you'd be in the fissure before reaching the other side (obviously less than 30 years but that doesn't help much)

      @@FFgamesftw Keep in mind, we are only lead to believe the Stranger is mute. It may merely be that we have no way of hearing ourselves during the game. It could be the Stranger is, for whatever reason, unable to hear their own voice. Or perhaps the Stranger is able to communicate by some other means. There are several moments throughout the games where Atrus seemingly understands us. This means that either we speak in some manner which we are ourselves unable to perceive or we use some form of nonverbal communication. Regardless of the truth, we should be able to communicate to Atrus when we see him in person the first time where we came from. After all, he is surrounded by huge stacks of paper. Since we presumably spend some amount of time with Atrus in D'ni before he goes to Myst island to burn the red and blue books, we must impart something about ourselves to him.

    You Really need to redo this one, as you got a lot of it wrong. Most of it by omission, and starting from the Dropping of the Myst book.
    Since linking books are left behind when you travel through them, to make sure Gen could not follow him to Myst, Atrus leapt into the star fissure, a hole in reality in the age of Riven. The moment he fell into the fissure, he realized that the book would not be destroyed as he had planed. It continued falling into that starry abyss of which he had only a fleeting glimpse before he linked out. Years went by and Atrus and Catherine had two sons, Sirius and Acaenar. Despite Atrus' best efforts to ease them right, the two sons turned evil. Sirius gained an insatiable greed for wealth, while Acaenar developed an unhealthy obsession for death and killing. Driven to madness by two linking books that Atrus forbade them from ever touching, the two brothers conspired to rid themselves of their parents. They trapped Catherine on Riven with Gehn and Atrus in the Ruins of Dini, and Plundered/murdered the population of every Age Atrus had ever written. Finally the brothers came to the two forbidden books, which they had saved for last. However, to their horror, the books turned out to be horrible traps that held them in limbo, unable to leave their prison. Now it's up to you, a total stranger who just happened to find a random book lying on the ground, to solve ridiculously complex puzzles that all amount to various combination locks in order to collect red/blue pages from the four remaining ages of Myst, Decide which brother is least likely to betray you, and try to find a way back home, in the sequel. Have FUN.

      MrSailing101 They've got to keep it short! Besides, wouldn't all that stuff about Sirrus and Achenar spoil the game? Most of the MYSTery is figuring out what the heck happened with Sirrus and Achenar and wondering which one you should trust.
      I mean, the video also left out everything from Book of Ti'ana about how Veovis and Ae'geris caused the plague that wiped out D'ni, and also about Aitrus' and Anna's involvement in Veovis's arrest and later release, which led to the plague, and also about the whole controversy that Anna stirred up in D'ni when she first got there... And for that matter, they didn't say anything about Yeesha's story either. There's just too much Myst lore to cover in a minute! I think they did a pretty good job. They didn't really get anything wrong that they included, except when they said that Atrus "inexplicably" drops the Myst book into the Star Fissure, since like you said he kinda had to drop it.

    • @professorflowers1840
      @professorflowers1840 6 лет назад +3

      To be fair they did get all of the lore details right (they usually leave the plot stuff relevant to game a mystery in the lore videos), but they star fissure part IS wrong like you said, Katherine escapes through the book and Atrus planned to as well (intending to hold it over the fissure before he ported so it would fall in when he disappeared and go caput, presumably) but the earth quake caused by Riven collapsing causes him to drop the book before he can teleport and then he falls in himself, noticing the book didn't explode or whatever he expected. Cue the stranger!

      bubba bojanglez • The ending to Riven isn’t cyclical with the beginning of Myst, though that is an interesting theory. When I first beat Riven as a kid (like 10 or 11 years old), I totally expected the game to end with us all getting back to D’ni, Myst, and everything, so I was completely confused when we fell in the fissure without the linking book after everything we did for Atrius!
      Presumably, there is another fissure on our Earth, which is how the Myst book got to us in the first place. So in Riven, we apparently fall back to where we came from in the only way Atrius knew of a connection to our world (no return linking books back to “Earth”), presumably in a gentle way that doesn’t make us die from impact or starvation - I forget how much time elapsed between Atrius’ journal entries about leaving Riven and his Myst linking book being found... certainly don’t think a human would survive a 30 year fall through space the same way a book could!

    • @jacks1368
      @jacks1368 4 года назад

      EvShrug D’ni _is_ Earth, though Atrus had no way of knowing that we were from the same world. It’s mentioned somewhere in the lore that Gehn created the Riven book by partially copying bits of other books, since the ones he made by himself were all failures, which might explain the existence of the fissure: it leads to the worlds from the books that were copied. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them was the D’ni book, which would lead to Earth.

      Book of D'ni is the weakest of the three (Book of Atrus is the best, IMHO). It's not bad but it's sort of all over the place when it comes to the story and it doesn't tie directly into the games as well as the other two, which is sort of a bummer.

    They actually expanded the lore (and explained a lot more about Myst) later. For fans of the Myst series, the lore is everything- which is a combination of the games, the novels and lore announcements from the company.
    To give you an idea- one of the key puzzles in Riven depends on you learning the number system and part of a language used by the "D'ni". You can't even progress unless you read through the various journal lying around, which mostly focus on expanding the world.

      I got stuck, then I played Riven at 11, and bought the Prima strategy guides for Myst and Riven. The guides were great, had a helpful section with hints instead of game-beating cheats, and made playing through the game pretty fun! Even without a Guide though, I highly recommend Riven even today. They did a GREAT job designing that game so you could explore a lot and find a lot of puzzles without the puzzles being a gate to further progress... you could see the puzzles (or even miss some of them) and walk past, but the more you explore, things about the world start to “click” together! Very satisfying!
      The three VERY MILD hints I would give you would be to taking notes will save you a LOT of time, consider that some things eventually need power, and most importantly take your time. A relaxed pace helps, don’t worry if you don’t understand the answer to a puzzle the first time you see it, and sometimes parts of the puzzle will be in different places. If something looks like a clue, it’s probably not a red herring... critical notes could all fit on an index card, though if you’re up for it, a full journal in the same style as Atrus’ from the Myst Library about your impressions, discoveries, and notes ends up being a fun keepsake to read after you finish.

    • @sheridanrathbun
      @sheridanrathbun 7 лет назад +8

      This is one of the small details that makes gehn such a compelling antagonist imo. the specifics of how much you link to an age vs how much you can change it *are* unclear: atrus admits it himself when he "writes" an entire boat into stoneship. regardless of this though, gehn is clearly selfish, haughty, prideful, and abusive toward those who live in the ages he writes. his view of himself as a "god" is myopic and he is indifferent to the suffering of others. he is also insecure of his heritage as half human/dni, and is ironically racist towards all non-dni, feeling that the dni are simply better in every way than their mere "creations." all of these things combine to make gehn a truly unique and awesome "bad guy". this is how you write a good villain!!

    • @Dachusblot
      @Dachusblot 7 лет назад +3

      I'm believe the official canon position is that Atrus is correct and the ages are all pre-existing worlds, but I kinda like the idea that maybe Gehn was partially correct too, and I think there are certain things in the series that are really difficult to explain within Atrus's view (like the ship in Stoneship Age). I also think it's interesting to question what responsibility, if any, a D'ni writer would have toward his ages if he was indeed creating those worlds. Obviously Gehn's whole, "I'm a god and I can do what I want!!!" attitude was wrong, but Atrus's theory that they're not actually creating the worlds at all kinda sidesteps the problem, especially since it's clear that the D'ni writers still did have a lot of power over the ages.
      I also personally think that even though Atrus was a good guy, he didn't always completely live up to his own theory in practice. Especially considering how his sons turned out...

    • @professorflowers1840
      @professorflowers1840 6 лет назад +1

      I completely agree! I think a great example of 'changing' an age comes from from Catherine did to Riven with the daggers when she was rebelling against Gehn. I believe she explained that the only way she could make them appear was to write them as if they were already there up in the sky and just so happened to fall into the world at that point. It seems the way that changes have to work are based on a mix of how they are perceived by intelligent creatures and also being physically possible to occur in the current worlds rules (like when Gehn writes out the heat from the island world to reset the drought he caused by just striking it through, he didn't write a reason for the temperature to drop back to how it was, so instead of keeping the old world it instead links to a new version that they had never visited in the first place but the temperature was still as it used to be, hence the islanders not recognising them).

    • @DoctorTex
      @DoctorTex 4 года назад +2

      No two Descriptive books lead to the exact same Age. Even if you meticulously copy every detail of the book, there's a very, VERY slim chance it'll actually lead to the same Age as the original book. Most of the time, they'll lead to very similar Ages, but still not the same ones.

    All of the symbols in Mystcraft are either D'ni letters, numbers, or Narayani pictograms. Also, the crystal portals in Mystcraft were, I believe, a reference to Atrus' crystal viewer in Revelation and RealMyst. The mod actually does a lot of stuff highly accurately to the games, such as how the books are constructed based on fundamental features of the planet it links to.

    The Myst Online: Uru Live community is pretty big, if you wanna try that out. It's just a MYST game that has puzzles and a storyline and everything, but there's also a main city-area that people often gather to speak with one another in. Bring a friend to help you with your puzzles! The creator of MYST is very active on it.

    Minor correction: when linking out of Riven to trap Genn, Atrus flung himself into the Star Fissure (a hole in the world caused by a fundamental flaw in it's creation due to Genn's inferior writing ability) and then used the Myst linking book assuming that the book would be destroyed. He did this because one cannot carry a linking book that they are using and there was no other way to guarantee the book would be destroyed after his and Catherine's escape.

    I think Myst is one of the most finely crafted point-and-click games in existence, and I think it truly defined the silent protagonist. Great game, and they have RealMyst as well, for the people who didn't like having to click to go everywhere.
    Seriously, check it out.

  • @Leo0718

    The most awesome part of this games is that any of it is actually seen by the player, since the stranger passes through this places way after the events have occurred. It's all related with journals and notes. So I guess the Lore guys had to extract most of this from the trilogy of novels that tie in with the games.

  • @lamentz27

    Because the first game was completely self-contained. Everything within Myst happened after Atrus and Catherine went there. What they told us in this video was a very fast summary of the three books about Myst that were written as prequel stories to the first game. The Book of Atrus (chronologically the last book, but written as the first) ends with Atrus and Catherine going to Myst after trapping Gehn within Riven and escaping.
