Transcript:
A thousand years ago, an ancient civilization worshipped a supernatural being known only as The Outsider. Said to be part devil, part angel, and entirely ambiguous, his mark was inscribed upon whale bones that served as charms for the local populace. Hundreds of years later, the Empire of Isles rose to power and built the city of Dunwall on the remains of the old civilization. Dunwall was a simple fishing city until the arrival of of Esmond Roseburrow, a natural philosopher.
At first, Roseburrow's radical ideas were rejected, forcing him into poverty which left him no choice but to take shelter in Dunwall's whaling grounds. There, he chanced upon commoners using whale oil to fuel fire which led him to discover it as a rich energy source. His discovery catapulted The Isles into an industrial revolution that lead to many technological advancements, but there was still more that could be done.
Anton Sokolov came to Roseburrow with the idea to further develop whale oil energy for other applications, which led to a rapid evolution in military technology. The government used its newfound weapons to control Dunwall's population, leading to an unforgiving authoritarian rule and an overwhelming guilt resulting in Roseburrow's suicide.
Then, after the mysterious reappearance of The Outsider, a deadly plague struck Dunwall, killing half of its citizens. Coupled with the assassination of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin, her bodyguard Corvo Attano must clear his name, save the Empress' daughter, and uncover the true nature of The Outsider.

what do you mean "discover the true nature of the outsider"? you pretty much know it from the start. hes just some guy who gives people he finds interesting powers and he watches what they do with them because hes bored.

not too long ago completed the game & dlc with high & low chaos and can confirm that i heard a couple of guards think that a wind killed their overseer with a spring razor strapped to a bottle

Forced into being a military state after the plague of rats, but I never heard about anything before that.
You do uncover it in the sequel.
Spoilers man
The outsider has been villainized and turned into Dunwall's satan by the Abbey of the Everyman, so a part of Corvo's quest is deciding whether he can really trust the Outsider, whose motivations are nebulous at best. This would be the "uncovering the true nature of the outsider" part.
The Outsider is definetly a bad force, cause he actively supports the rise of chaos and disorder.
People killing each other and disrupting society literally entertain him, so he gives them magic powers to be even better at it.
The plauge was caused by the guy who hired assassains on the empress because he wanted to kill all the poor and brought in plauge infested rats, which is also the readon why they like to nom on you in bog packs, (spoiler) you assassinate him and if you do the side part of the mission you have to go fetch something out of his safe and play it in the broadcasting room which talks about this and the guards hear this on the broadcast and they go and arest him soooo. the plauge part is wrong with the whole outsider theory :)

Outsiders nature:
An omnipotent being that gives the only unpredictable humans in the world supernatural powers.
Reason: Knowing everything gets boring after a while.
That's why Daud eventually decided he's better off dead in the final DLC. Too many people (all connected) had too much fun with the powers and thus changed the Empire.

The outsider is more like a guy who likes to watch events unfold and just spices it up by giving the individual magical powers their are only 8 of them who have his mark.
Also, Corvo may or may not be Emily's baby daddy... NOW have fun!

Despite the underwhelming endings you can get, Dishonored is one of my favorite games ever. I just love the world they created, the whale oil, the steam punk style, the mystery, It's all so damn cool!

maybe i am crazy but i saw some similarity with the DIVINE COMEDY: the outsider as Virgil, samuel as Charon and you as Dante. also the mission are 9 as the circles. is there even more that i missed, am i going insane?

You could be onto something. The missions don't exactly line up with the 9 circles of hell, in either order or theme; but who knows? Maybe the developers didn't want to make the parallel that obvious?

+im hasd in the dlc you play as Daud and fight against a covenant of witches(2nd dlc) and their leader tries to use a portrait of Emily to posses her and rule the kingdom through her and you foil her plans, thus saving Emily and by extension the kingdom
HIGHLY recommend you play the dlc

Well, the Outsider didn't cause the plague, he just used it for more chaos. Cause chaos is his TV program.
There are so many stories in dishonored you could make at least 10 of these videoes.

Finnaly, a nice person. I like Dodger voice, when she's not rushing it, like when she was on that show, with that chinese guy.
When I played this game I tried to pay as much attention to the story line as I could but not once did I hear about the guy that discovered the potential for whale oil.

and I'm pretty sure the outsider wasn't reappearing, because he must have given his powers to daud and granny rags before the plague even started.
The Outsider is a devil and a deceiver, only through the seven strictures of the abbey may mankind survive.
Well done, should've explained a little about the overzealous religious sect known as "The Abbey of the Everyman" and the overseers, etc.
The Empress' assassination was a cruel and sad affair, and yet...

Vera Moray (Granny Rags) visited the mainland, which was when she discovered the Outsider and his artifacts. From everything I could gather, the Outsider first appeared in the Isles as a direct result of Vera 'Granny Rags' bringing artifacts, and the knowledge and worship of the Outsider, to the Isles.
I never saw any mention of the Isles being the origination of the ancient civilization in the game (or out of it, for that matter).

The non-lethal option at the start when the assassins attack is just to hold block and they eventually just teleport away.
