LORE - Kingdom Hearts Lore in (almost) a Minute!
Our story begins during the massive conflict known as the Keyblade War. Thousands of Light and Darkness Keyblade wielders clashed in order to create the legendary X-Blade, which had the ability to summon Kingdom Hearts, the source of all power and knowledge, to its wielder. In the end, many Keyblade wielders along with the X-Blade were destroyed and darkness consumed Kingdom Hearts. Fortunately, the light within the seven hearts of children who survived the war rebuilt the universe into several worlds with barriers between them to prevent Keyblade wielders from gathering and starting a second war over the X-Blade. These seven hearts would eventually become the Princesses of Heart; Kairi, Alice, Snow White, Jasmine, Belle, Cinderella, and Aurora.
Years later, Keyblade Master Xehanort, having heard legends of the Keyblade War, becomes obsessed with forging the X-Blade and unlocking Kingdom Hearts for himself. Growing old, Xehanort realizes he must transfer his essence to a new body and finds a 'host' in the boy Ventus, a Keyblade wielder. However, Ventus proves to be a poor candidate because of his refusal to embrace the darkness in his heart and Xehanort instead extracts the darkness and creates Vanitas. In order to forge the X-Blade, two hearts of light and darkness in equal power must combine, thus Xehanort leads Ventus to train under fellow Keyblade Master, Eraqus.
Xehanort now chooses Terra as his new vessel. His plan nearing fruition, he lures Terra, Ventus, and Aqua to the Keyblade Graveyard for a final showdown. Terra, enraged by Xehanort's betrayal, uses darkness to defeat him but inadvertently opens his heart and allows Xehanort to transfer his essence, becoming Terra-Xehanort. Meanwhile, Vanitas fuses with Ventus, creating the X-Blade but is damaged by Aqua and King Mickey. Engaging in a battle within, Ventus destroys Vanitas, the X-Blade, and his own heart. The destruction of the X-Blade results in an explosion that transports Terra-Xehanort to Destiny Islands and leaves Aqua in the 'Lanes Between'. Somehow, Ventus heart makes its way to and becomes a part of Sora, setting the stage for Kingdom Hearts.

Pretty much. The one thing the got incorrectly was terra ending up in destiny islands, he ended up under care of ansem and company at radiant garden research facility

Here. I'll make it simple. There's a cool sword the old bad guy wants. He tries to make a boy into the sword and fails. He then poses a strong young man so he can be young and strong again and continue to be evil. A friend of the boy and the young man ends up in the shadow world with Mickey Mouse. The rest doesn't matter or gets retconned.

I don't know if I would consider lore backstory, necessarily. So, basically, this only explains about 5% of the Kingdom Hearts storyline.

you failed to piece the other games together. but here's the timeline as i see it:
birth by sleep, KH1, chain of memories, 358/2 days(although these two happen more or less simultaneously), KH2, re: coded, dream drop distance, KH3. and then whatever games come after.
i know they pronounced X like ex for the benefit of people who are new to the series, but it just sounds wierd not hearing them pronounce it "key-blade"

I know the backstory of KH is pretty convoluted, but seriously, they missed so much important stuff I'm curious as to why they even bothered with a KH Lore video...

Sora would in fact have his own key blade even if he hadn't fused with Ventus, because he is so pure of heart that he is the most powerful heartless magnet other than a princess, and that his heart has, in fact, altered his keyblade every time he experiences a moment that moves his entire being. That's how he gets new keychains in a nutshell. Following that logic, he would have produced a keyblade on his own simply because his life energy is so potent.
*EDIT* Ok, you got everything generally right, but you left out a few major points. Idk, like how Aqua left herself in the realm of darkness, how Ven was left in Castle Oblivion which was created by Aqua...
actually, Ventus was originally going to be the host, but wasn't suited for the job. so Xehanort decided to use Ventus for the X blade instead. ( They talk about it in the Master Xehanort Report )

Only thing you got wrong is that the destruction of the X-Blade isn't what sent Terranort (Terra's body overtaken by Xehanort's heart) and Aqua away.
In Radiant Garden (What we come to know as Hollow Bastion in KH1) after you've completed the three main stories (Ventus, Terra, Aqua) of Birth By Sleep and found all the Xehanort reports (conditions vary by difficulty), you'll unlock a fourth story where you play solely as Aqua.
In this fourth story, Aqua confronts Terranort and - after a tough battle - Terranort almost falls into darkness, with Aqua sacrificing herself in order to save him - believing Terra to "still be in there" - which is why Aqua is know in the shadowy realm.
P.S. The story is NOT that convoluted. Believe me, I grew up with Bionicle.

I've followed Bionicle for nigh eons, Kingdom Hearts for a couple years now. And speaking from my experience regarding both those serials, Kingdom Hearts, even beside Bionicle, remains completely convoluted.
I've never looked at that as a bad thing though, probably because I've never looked upon Kingdom Hearts as anything meant to be taken seriously.
Farbe it from me to tell you it's the proper way to look at things, but when a series as bizarre as a Final Fantasy / just about every well known Disney title in existence crossover, with the titular weapon being a giant key, it shouldn't even tempt trying to take itself seriously.
If you were to ask me, the laughably convoluted nature of the series just enhances the over-the-top experience.
Slug of Borg The convolution of Kingdom Hearts' story is the point of it's story. If it wasn't convoluted, it'd be a hell of a lot less interesting than it is, and is what makes it interesting. It's not really complex, per se, but rather, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. As far as professional creative writing goes, that's thought to be the best way to write. Writing doesn't consist of giving the reader (or player in this case) all the answers. They need to continue in order to figure out what they need to know, and it increasingly grabs their interest as those answers successfully achieve more unanswered questions. It's what makes the series what it is. After all, story is what these kind of games are all about.
Yeah, if one truly love it, one wont care about how complicated it is. I took pride in knowing that rollercoaster of a timeline, for both Bionicle and Kingdom Hearts :)

I believe this doesn't cover the whole story because Sora's story still hasn't ended.
I really want to see its full story explained, because I really was confused by its complixity, and now after many years since the first game, I forgot some of the story.

There's nothing much to be said about pre-Kingdom Hearts unless you go into Birth by Sleep.

@Magnus Von Braun which chronologically should make no sense because Vanitas was created before Ventus' heart reached Sora and so it's Sora's face looks like Vanitas not the other way around, but this is Kingdom Hearts so we don't talk about that.
Terra-Xehanort wasn't taken to Destiny Island. That's where Xehanort was really from. After Aqua saved Terra-Xehanort from falling into the Realm of Darkness by sacrificing herself, he was found by Ansem the Wise and Braig and the rest of the scientists of Hollow Bastion and became a scientist himself. He had amnesia, but Braig remembered him. He became interested in studying the heart, but Ansem the Wise forbade it. He, along with the other scientists and guards of Hollow Bastion, did experiments on the heart anyway, and they were turned into Heartless and Nobodies. The Nobodies formed Organization XIII and recruited new members such as Isa and Lea, and Xehanort's Heartless stole Ansem the Wise's name and began plunging the worlds into darkness. My point is, Xehanort wasn't taken to Destiny Island at the end; he became a scientist at Hollow Bastion. He originated from Destiny Island.

I know this isn't meant to be taken completely seriously, but if we're being up-to-date, Vanitas wasn't actually Ven's Darkness, but just Darkness itself hidden within him.
Sora has his own keyblade. Terra used the Inheritance ceremony to give Riku access to a Keyblade when the time came.
However, when the time came, Riku had already succumbed to Darkness. So the Keyblade then chose Sora, because he had the heart of a Keyblade wielder fused with his own.
However, it is still his keyblade. Final form put it best - It shows the complete union of Ventus, Sora and Roxas. The nobody colours for Roxas, Ventus' keyblade and Sora's keyblade.

Super impressed they were able to condense the story so well, but anyone else have to rewind the vidro every few seconds bc you missed half of what was just said due to all the dense detail? (And I've played all the games!)
I knew it was to good to be true to think that they could cram the whole series into 1 minute lol, that just scratched the surface!
By the way, if you are interested in the real KH Lore, just look up for a more trusty source of info, because this lore video has some serious mistakes. (Or just play Birth by Sleep)

Xarnoa The whole X-blade business didn't annoy me much since bar subtitles how would anyone be able to tell they were specifically talking about the X-blade and not the keyblade? They presumably mispronounced it deliberately for sake of understanding on the part of the viewers. As for Xehanort though... I'm annoyed by the fact they mispronounce it but not everyone understands how to pronounce these things so I try to ignore it as much as possible, besides I think they pronounced it correctly once at least...

Don't want to be that guy but at the end of Kingdom Hearts BBS Ventus heart rest in Sora and he goes to sleep waiting for it Aqua brings him to Land of departure and changes it to Castle of Oblivion Then she see 's Terra-Xeahornort then fights him after he ends up in Radiant Garden then but before that in their fight Aqua saves him and is in the Realm of Darkness.

The worlds weren't created from 7 hearts of light. The universe was once one big connected place until the Keyblade War caused it to be swallowed by darkness and the disconnected worlds were born from the light of the hearts of children (not just 7 hearts of pure light) and this light essentially becoming the worlds' hearts.
That's the most logical explanation so far. And the fact that Cloud and Sephiroth are already in the game compliment that.
As someone who has only played Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2....this video proves just how fucking convoluted and ridiculous the story has become. Christ. Do you guys remember the good ol' days when it was just a boy on an island who enters worlds that have Disney and Final Fantasy characters in them? Sweet simplicity.
And nowadays? Xehanort traveled back in time to recruit Xehanort, Xehanort, Xehanort, and lest we forget, Xehanort. He also possesses people by breaking their hearts, came back to life at one point, and organized everything with the stipulation he'd have amnesia up to a certain point.

That simplicity only existed in Kingdom Hearts 1. Kingdom Hearts 2 fully deserves all the criticism that the handheld games unjustly receive for being the point where Nomura and co decided to completely ditch a simple, coherent story in favor of ridiculous incest clones and a sudden, inexplicable hard-on for shounen-style choreography.

One, I don't think the story lost any coherency. It's just that less of the story gets spoonfed to the players and requires some actual thought.

Ugh. I'm so tired of people defending shitty stories with the infamous "players want everything spoon-fed to them!" defense. That's jumping to conclusions. Players don't want it spoon-fed to them. They just want it to make fucking sense. You shouldn't have to consult the god damn wiki for the game just to understand WTF is going on. And Kingdom Hearts has become exactly that. If you haven't played all the billion handheld games, yer gunna be in the dark. And even IF you play those games...yer still gunna be in the dark, because it's such a clusterfuck. Spoon-feed my ass.
Man kingdom hearts has a hard story to follow, i just play it because you can be in the Disney universe fighting the heartless by your favorite characters you know and love. Can't wait for KH3 i hope you can be in marvel and star wars universe too(since their license by Disney of course).

Basicly: Keyblades, ultimate keyblade unlocks Kingdom Hearts, guy wants to live forever in order to get the ulti-keyblade, almost succeeds, is stoped by Mickey and co, heart of the dude who helped stop him becomes part of Sora on that pretty island and that same part of Sora becomes Roxas

The keyblade weilders were not waging war to forge the x-blade. They were fighting to wield it in order to control kingdom hearts. Fool.
And in order to wield it in the first place, it MUST be forged.

Kingdom Hearts and the X-blade exist as one. the their origins are unknown but what is known is that the key existed long before the original keyblade war(which happened during ancient times). The upcoming keyblade war is a battle to forge a copy of the key and control its imense power. However it is unknown how keyblades ar created, all that we know is that simply materialize in the hands of those with "strong hearts". The original key, the X~blade just existed...

There must be a Moogle hiding in each world that creates a keychain because if you need them to synth the Ultima, then surely there's some making all the others from Deep Jungle to The World That Never Was. It's possible that the Moogles know something about the X-Blade, buuut this is just me heavily speculating.

Even with a Kingdom Hearts Lore, it's still hard as hell trying to explain the game's plot to someone without blowing their minds.

yes, In birth by sleep, when ventus goes to destiny islands for the first time or before the game, he has a broken heart which is caused by xeanhort forming vanitas from part of his heart, when ventus's heart is healed, part of it goes inside sora. His heart also goes into their at the end as he has a broken heart, it knows it can be healed by sora's so his heart goes to his heart and stays their until it's healed (possibly next game after the secret ending in kk:3d) where people like xion enter
I loved the first Kingdom Hearts.
I loved the second Kingdom Hearts.
But there came a point where I thought to myself, "How fucking convoluted is this shit going to get".
I am 21 now. I figured out how shitty this game's plot was when I was an early teenager.

The story is the best part. Just consult the wiki and realize that it's not convoluted, just really deep and complicated
I think the problem lies with the localization. Sometimes, key dialogue is translated differently and many moments of foreshadowing are lost. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but it's safe to say the Japanese might not have such a hard time figuring out the story as us Americans.
Black Mage Anolis It's really not translated wrong. Translation issues haven't been a huge deal outside of censorship for almost a decade when it comes to localization.
The fact is, the story really is convoluted and crammed, and creating spinoffs served to complicate it further rather than explain it better as they initially intended to.

ECKS BLADE?! Dude, yes, it looks like an X, so one would assume you pronounce it like "Ecks" however this is false. Master Xehanort says X is an ancient letter within the world of Kingdom Hearts(Which Nomura ased off the Greek letter X) The pronounciation is Key or Kai, two different pronounciations but the meaning is the same as MX says, however it is not pronounced like Ecks, it's wither Kai or Key, that's how it's done. Nerd rant over.

It's NOT gonna' be as good as we hope, I know that for almost certain. The trailers show optimal gameplay, and things to hype you up. The actual game isn't gonna be as cinematic as the trailers. (Basically they cut out all of the normal bits that made the game look just awesome instead of perfect).
The game most likely will be amazing, but not like the trailers.

No but seriously, you think it's bad, some of us think it's good, saying "The story is terrible" is literally the worst thing you can say about any game, because at least 1 person has a different opinion. I for one think that Sonic '06 was the worst game to ever be released, however one of my friends enjoyed it for what it was, so even though it's universally seen as the worst game, with the shittest story, someone still enjoyed it and appreciated it, so it's not fair to say it straight up sucks.
As for Kingdom Hearts, I agree some parts of the story are weird and pointless, but it's still an enjoyable opinion to some of us, not to mention nostalgia has a lot to do with it.

@@xiuhnani6945 Have you seen the X-Keeper gameplay? Its exactly what I expected, hoped, and more. Plus they show whats good for advertising because they know KH fans will buy it, but they want other people to buy it too.

The story isn’t bad. It’s just too complicated. Complicated doesn’t equal good. What bothers me the most about KH is how slow the cutscenes are, combined with how it’s trying constantly to be meaninglessly “deep”.

Pronounced "keyblade"...not "x-blade". It just looks like that in words.
It's probably to differentiate between keyblade's and the specific keyblade he is talking about.
He also mispronounced Xehanort the whole time. I'm pretty sure it's pronounced like a 'z'. . . . as in Zehanort. Even the name Xavier is really pronounced 'Zavier.' Don't ask me why an 'x' is pronounced like a 'z,' but it is.
I know how it's pronounced. But not everyone can pronounce things properly so cut him some slack.

FFS, it's not pronounced "x-blade". The x-like symbol is a Greek letter pronounced the same as "key". Yeah, it's confusing to call it that since it's pronounced the same as regular Keyblades, but calling it "x-blade" is incorrect and just threatens the credibility of the video.
I always pronounce it as "chee" blade.
I know that's also the wrong way to pronounce it but I find it easier to avoid confusion with regular keyblades that way.

Because, again, it's not the letter X, it's the letter χ from the Greek alphabet. It would be like calling E-123 Omega "Horseshoe".
If people REALLY need something to differentiate it vocally from a regular Keyblade, Master Xehanort explained it can be pronounced "Kye-blade". But calling it "Ecks-Blade" is just wrong outright.

I don't know which is worse: knowing how Nomura WANTS us to pronounce X-Blade; knowing how Greeks ACTUALLY pronounce χῖ; or knowing that I've been sucked-in by Nomora's garbage so long that hearing "X-Blade" (while making a lot more sense and being a lot less dumb) sounds "off".

it is a good game. But no doubt it would have been better without the disney characters
because it made by disney. trust me when i tell you its not completely disnified and some of the character who can join you kick butt. jack from the nightmare before christmas, beast from beauty and the beast plus kingdom hearts three has the possibility of marvel characters and star wars which are now owned by disney. plus for all of you who played final fantasy seven aerith is there alive. well she in the last two sequels.

Better with Disney character than ridiculously made up characters. A lot of the main Disney characters also fit well with Sora's personality and there are some badass Disney Villains.
Iftekhar Ahmed If there *was* actually a game that had the same exact mechanics and story as Kingdom Hearts, only with Final Fantasy characters, then the FF part of the KH fanbase wouldn't have to hear "stick to Final Fantasy" over and over again; likely leaving the KH fanbase a long time ago.
But no. They put up with it because only Kingdom Hearts has the qualities they're looking for.
Ventus' heart broke once when Xehanort tried to make the X-blade the first time, and went into Sora's heart. Sora's heart left an impression on Ventus' heart which is why Vanitas looks like Sora. Then when Ventus defeated Vanitas, his heart broke again, and once again found its way back to Sora, where it remains to this day.
Long story short, Ventus' heart sought out a safe place, and found Sora's heart twice.
1. It only requires 1 heart of light and 1 heart of darkness to combine to forge the x-blade. 2. When Ventas destroys the x-blade nothing happens except his and Vanitas' heart are forever lost in sleep. 3. Terra reaches out and tries to free himself from Xehanort by using the keyblade to open his heart again utterly destroying his own soul which then causes him to fall into the darkness in which aqua dives in to save him utterly trapping herself in it while sending terra to radiant gardens.
You forgot the part where Sora's newborn heart heals Ventus' heart that was broken after Xehanort extracted Vanitas(Ven's darkness)outta him, setting up the part where Ven's again-broken heart finds his way to Sora's now four year old heart.

However, Heartless that possess an emblem are artificial, created by machines. Emblem Heartless can steal Hearts and use the darkness in them to manifest another Emblem heartless

ONE QUESTION THOUGH; In the beginning of Birth By Sleep, Ventus is shown within his won heart and a voice speaks to him, and it says "There, our hearts have touched" after Ventus reveals what little heart he has left is "slipping away." Who was the person who shared hearts with Ventus?

Many would find it weird but after finishing everything in the KH universe in March when it all was released to PS4 which were all a great games,i was able to understand that story quite well... :)
It's pretty cool when you think about it and i can't wait to see what they do next on KH3. :D
Now that Dream Drop Distance is out, and KH III is coming, I hope that they'll make another of these lore videos. Love the drawings :)

I thought the reason Roxas's heart went to Sora was because the creating of Venitus damaged his heart and then was abandoned on destiny island. where Sora somehow gave him part of his heart, which stabilized him but left him with no memories. So the reason Sora got Venituses (half at the time, but restored later)heart was because it was attached to his, and the reason he got a keyblade was not because he took it from Riku but because Venitus's heart being joined with Sora's transferred the power without the passing of the Inheritance ceremony.
When Xehanort split Ventus' heart into two (Vanitas), he brought Ventus to Destiny Islands. There Ventus met the newly born Sora in his heart, where Sora gave a piece to Ventus to enable him to live (this connection between the two allowed Vanitas to take shape as Sora (originally he was just a black head with beady yellow eyes). When he merged with Vanitas years later, Ventus destroyed his heart along with Vanitas to destroy the X-Blade. There Ventus met with Sora again after wandering in the darkness. Thus Ventus became a part of Sora's heart, giving him the power to not one, but two keyblades (Ventus did influence this) which is why both Roxas and Xion could use keyblades, and Roxas can use two) When Sora released his heart to release Kairi in the first game, it created both Roxas (Sora) and Namine (Sora+ Kairi (As Kairi has no darkness and could not go to the realm of darkness being a princess of heart thus not being able to solely create a Nobody, so Sora took the spot as the body for Namine)) the connection between Roxas and Ventus is that when Sora released his heart Ventus' heart was released as well, giving influence to Sora's Nobody, Roxas' form. When in 3Ds Sora met with Young Xehanort, Ventus' heart was reacting to Young Xehanort (thus showing an image of Vanitas).

Umm, didn't the may-or-may-not-be amnesiac Terranort end up back in Radiant Garden instead of Destiny Islands? He (due apparently Braig) became Ansem the Wise's apprentice there.
They're have a pretty awesome side story in the game that features not only those two characters, but most of the final fantasy characters.
The x Blade coexists with Kingdom Hearts. The keyblades that were used to fight in the war were made in the image of the xBlade, in order to obtain it.
It also wasn't created when a heart of pure light and darkness MERGED, but when they clashed. The reason Ventus and Vanitus merged were because they were of the same heart.
Also, the blade created at the graveyard was an imperfect blade and it was through Ventus efforts to stop Vanitus completing it that caused the blast, not Aqua and Mickey.
