Game Description:
Myst III: Exile is the third title in the Myst series of graphic adventure puzzle video games. While the preceding games in the series, Myst and Riven, were produced by Cyan Worlds and published by Brøderbund, Exile was developed by Presto Studios and published by Ubisoft. The game was released on four compact discs for both Mac OS and Microsoft Windows on May 8, 2001; versions for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 were released in late 2002.
As in previous games, the player assumes the role of the Stranger, a friend of Atrus. A member of the D'ni race, Atrus can create links to other worlds called Ages by writing descriptive books. In Exile, Atrus has written an Age for the D'ni to live on while rebuilding their civilization; it is stolen, however, by a mysterious figure. The Stranger pursues the thief in an attempt to reclaim Atrus' book.
The creators of the Myst franchise gave the task of creating the third Myst game to Presto Studios, known for its adventure game series The Journeyman Project. Presto sought to develop a diverse and logical approach to puzzles and Ages, and worked to make the villain sympathetically multifaceted. The developers hired Jack Wall to develop a musical style different from earlier composer Robyn Miller but still recognizable as a Myst game. The project required millions of U.S. dollars and more than two years to complete.
Exile was received well by critics; The Daily Telegraph called it the best game in the Myst series. Conversely, long-time critics of the series complained that Exile continued to prove that Myst's slower gameplay did not belong in the fast-paced modern game market; GameSpot editor Greg Kasavin described the Myst series as having lost its relevance. Despite selling more than one million copies within the first year of release, Exile fared poorer commercially than Myst and Riven, which had sold more than 10 million copies combined. Myst IV: Revelation, the fourth game in the series, was developed and published solely by Ubisoft. - Игры
Imagine being Saveedro in this episode. He links to Atrus' study, sets it on fire, then grabs Releeshan and links back to J'nannin. Someone links in behind him, so he runs up to the central tusk, locks the door behind him, and rubs his hands together with glee as he waits for Atrus to follow him. Hours go by. He hears someone messing with the Amateria platform. He checks his watch. Why the hell isn't Atrus coming after him? He looks out the window and sees a figure walking around the island checking out the viewing ports. What the HELL is Atrus doing?? Another three hours go by. Saveedro looks out the window again and the figure is now stretched out on a rock reading a book. Saveedro yells out the window "WHAT THE FUCK ATRUS?"
This is a very good point, also this comment killed me. Thank you very much XD
I think "WHAT THE FUCK, ATRUS?!" sums up most of the Myst experience
An FYI for anyone else watching from the future: Myst 3 & 4 are now on GOG.
An FYI for anyone else watching from the future: Every Myst game ever is now on Steam.
Thank you both from the future

I also really admire how Riven raised Keith's standard for logic.
Keith at the start of Riven: "Where are all the puzzles?"
Keith at the start of Myst III: "Why would anyone build this?"
Ubi Soft is a pun: Ubi means "where" in Latin, so "Ubi Soft" translates to "Soft Where", or software.
Semper ubi sub ubi
This was my first Myst game (I randomly picked it at the store) Fell in love with Myst after that.
That non functional book in his study was Riven, recognize the symbol on the front?
6:00 No, the intro of Myst shows Atrus falling from Riven and ending in New Mexico. And then you find his Myst book.
Thomas Vinci See, the thing that honks me off is that the Cleft in the Book of Ti'ana seems to be located in the Middle East, given that there is a camel caravan and the Sounding causes said caravan to panic and shout in an Arabic language. Cyan retconned the location to New Mexico later.
I know and I lament it too. It doesn't really matter (very little of Myst is set on Earth), but Middle East is a more interesting and rarely used setting.
Per Word of God, the Middle East was actually an internal retcon by the author of the Book of Ti'ana, and internal design docs had intended it to be in New Mexico originally, which they had to... ret-retcon? For lack of a better term.
If it makes you feel better, there actually were camels around New Mexico during that time period. But the rest doesn't fit, sadly.
Huh doesn't that mean it is rather likely that you got the Dini book that fell through the same Star Fissure?
YES! Oh god. I thought this day might never come - I was so afraid when it didn't follow right after Myst II
Once again...best video game pack in history!!!Nothing like Myst, Riven and Exile!!!
BRAD DOURIF! I just love his performance in this game...
The funny thing is he actually wanted the role because he was a huge fan of the games. It's not often you grab an Oscar nominated actor for this.

@@shuboy05 Sad to know that David Ogden Stiers passed away in 2018 on March 3rd at 75 Years Old He had Problems with Bladder Cancer
So that's Sheila Goold (Riven's Cathrine), John Keston (Gehn) and Esher gone already ☹ RIP, thank you for your legacy.
@@GreatWightSpark I was just thinking, if more remakes are in the works then all those old acted roles will be relics. I'm happy the games are being brought to new audiences, but the CGI characters just aren't the same...
Glad you played the whole series! Love him going these
Presto actually did a pretty good job with this. It captures the essence of what a Myst games is quite well in my opinion and Brad Dourif (Wormtounge in Lord of the Rings) makes an outstanding antagonist in this game.
Thank you for this playthrough! Remember playing this amazing game on PS2 back in the day.
Huh, I know the PS2 had an incredibly diverse library, but it still surprises me that they'd have a point and click puzzle adventure!
Hey Keith, pretty new sub, just wanted to say I've been devouring your vids as I've been in the hospital recovering from a leg break. Your content is fantastic and so glad I found your channel. Looking forward to this new let's play!
Hope you get better soon!
Get well soon, and enjoy the content!
Oh I did the same. Bed ridden for 2-3 months, and I just binged a lot of Keiths' content.
I'm stoked for this. Never played it, but enjoyed your Myst and Riven playthroughs so much that even if the game itself sucks watching these will be fun :D
Brad Dourif, one of my favorite character actors! (We'll be seeing a bit more of him. :)
If you want to see him in more videogames, play the Star Wars: Dark Forces series.
Most people think Riven is the best Myst game, and on a technical level I can see why, but personally Exile was always my favorite, so I'm super glad to see it picked!
On a side note, I think this should be the last Myst game that gives you trouble on a modern day PC. Of course, YMMV, but Myst IV was made for Windows XP, and those games tend to work pretty well on the current generation of operating systems.
Awesome, I'm glad to see Keith's Myst adventures continue.
AND WE ARE BACK.
*...GO FOLLOW THE GUY!!*
Woooo! Really enjoyed your previous Myst playthroughs.
"You really blew it, protagonist man. All you had to do was react quickly."
-"No! How did he know my secret weakness to cutscenes?"
Yes Myst wooohooo!!!!
And the Music is one of the best.
The Dig would actually be a really good one to see.
You never hear anybody talk about it, for some reason. Darn shame, a true classic.
@@LORDOFDORKNESS42 From a golden age for LucasArts.
"I had assumed Riven was forever goodbye."
Well, yes, it's a bit of a trek between Myst and your home Age. But then Atrus and Catherine moved in here, only perhaps a few miles away in your same home Age, so of course they had to invite you over once they got moved in.
atrus: 'well my friend, i see you've found the releeshan book'
saveedro: 'aaaand it's gone'
Probably nobody is going to read this, but if you intend to play Myst 3 yourself, note that it's now supported by ResidualVM (a sister project of ScummVM made for 3D games) and you can play it in widescreen there. (Myst and Riven, being 2D games, are now playable in ScummVM.)
I love how they made sure to include the book of riven in atrus's study, and so prominently placed, to indicate that atrus has either been observing the death of riven, or that he has maybe even gone there to retrieve any books that were left there, such as the book of tay, where the rebels relocated to, so that catherine would still be able to visit her family and friends from her childhood. It is also a beautiful reminder of how fallible the books can be, and of the mistakes of his father...
Heyyyy I love Myst 3. Cant wait to see this
Yay! I voted for Zelda, Longest Journey and Myst! Hope you get to The Longest Journey at some point, cause it has some wonderfully cool story stuff. Plus, as a Norwegian, there's a Funcom solidarity thing, of course.
The puzzles are terrible, though.
Aurora Borealis... At this time of year, at this time of day, in this age... localised entirely within your study!?
Delightfully devilish, Saveedro.
To whoever keeps nominating Grim Fandango, keep it up
Where Riven is the undisputed best puzzle in the series (and maybe the best story), where Myst IV is probably the prettiest game, and Uru perhaps the longest depending on how you count the expansion content, I think of Myst III as the best "puzzle garden" / "Myst clone". If you want to just drop into a pretty world, bump into interesting puzzles, and solve them to progress to an overall climax, you can scarcely do better.
The puzzles integrate into the environments, which are pretty and quite distinct, but the puzzles also are discrete and finite in scope. They fit into an overall frame that gives you a clear sense of progress. When you're stuck on one area, you can almost always go explore somewhere else while you mull it over.
And yeah, it doesn't have free walk yet, but it at least has free _look,_ which is a huge boon to one's ability to orient oneself and just to admire the environment.
I might not call it the best _game_ in the series, but it does one thing _spectacularly_ well.
Myst is groundbreaking, Riven is challenging, IV is pretty, V is closure and Uru is immersive, but Exile is just plain *fun*. Who couldn't love floating rocks, colorful wildlife, roller-coasters, scenery-chewing Brad Dourif performances, AND things that go "smash"? :-)
I approve the outcome of this poll. Well done, voters!
(also, that lady should really stop shaking that baby like that)
@SnazzyCricket The video is on loop. She’s not abusing her child.
"Shaken baby syndrome" has to do with giving babies too young to hold up their heads whiplash (and other symptoms in common with car crashes). She is doing the manual equivalent of a baby swing. (Trust me, her arms will give out LONG before the baby is tired of it)
Shakey cam at the start was great. Hope you make use of that in the future whenever you have the chance.
Agreed the shaky cam was great. Also that glimpse into the Reality of Youtubing Lyfe in general
So . . . back in the day, I had to play Riven on 5 disks. Yep, every time I wanted to change islands, I had to change disks. No zipping around the map in 5 seconds.
I remember playing this game on PS2, took me along time to complete, because I would get frustated, but at last I finished it.
I am so glad I got the Myst III DVD with my 25th Anniversary box set. Switching discs was just a pain back then. On a related note, who could have predicted Cyan would get the rights to III and IV several months after this video was posted?
I love how no let's players ever chase Saavedro when they arrive, so you never see him clambering over rocks and stuff.
It's neat they tried something new I guess, but Myst games have long since removed all sense of immediacy.
I guess I would be the only one, I was constantly screamin' for 'im to chase the guy and go mind the puzzles later!
@@KeithBallardA STILL.
I played the hell out of Myst and Riven as a kid, but never played any of the later sequels. Looking forward to seeing how they hold up.
That first book you cross with the video/portal that appears to be constantly burning bears the symbol for the number 5 on its cover, reminiscent of Riven's "Age 5" designation and displayed on all Linking Books that would transfer one to that dimension, which is interesting as all Books to that Age were supposedly destroyed or otherwise cast in to the void.
Dostoyevskyy That is the Descriptive Book for Riven. Besides, all the links OUT of Riven were destroyed; linking books into the age still exist.
Not gonna lie. I want to see a video of fixing the technical difficulties. Just to see what all has to be done for these kinds of things.
No you don't, hahaha. Trying to get Riven to work on my computer almost killed me. Or...at least it gave me a really bad headache and made me want to fling my computer across the room. Still not as bad as Yume 2kki, though. That was the mother of all hard-to-install games. My computer still gives me screen resolution popups in Japanese (hiragana and all) because of the crazy things I had to do to make that game work.
What's truly mystifying is how a small number of people can construct such large and fancy pieces of architecture
I know this LP is old but please " FOLLOW HIM, AAARGH"
Ikr it really bothers me when people have a clear objective, "follow him" and they just ignore it and go around trying to figure out a future puzzle. That mindset only really pays off when playing an rpg where there can be loot in a side area, but games like this, going off and doing other stuff is really shooting yourself in the foot when doing just one thing could give you a clear objective on what puzzles need to be solved now, and have hints on how to solve them, or even what the puzzle actually is.
I kind of like the brightness thing telling people to fix their computers. So many people have really badly calibrated monitors.
Omg, really glad I voted this time.
Yes! This will be nice! I was afraid Myst lost momentum after zelda (which I enjoyed a lot more than I had anticipated!). South Park surprised me and I'm really glad that it didn't win.
Also: Myst III soundtrack is amazing!
The linking book you are trying to click at 16:30 has the Riven age symbol. And you can't link to it because that's the Riven age that has been destroyed in the previous game.
The ramp and barrel animations are playing way faster than they're supposed to. You might want to do a bit more troubleshooting.
Paul Johnston I never played this one, but it looked super aggressive, haha
Fellow Myst fans rejoice.
Phoenix Wright Ojection! This is “Myst 3: Exile”, Phoenx. Riven was before exile

The only format? Nah man, copies of this game for Xbox are abundant.
Fun fact, in Riven, you absolutely could have opened the fissure without saving Catherine or the Rivenese. Atrus would have been... less than pleased.
Can you even get Myst 3 these days other than by 'acquiring' it? 3 and 4 seem to be in a legal limbo which is unfortunate as they're the only ones I haven't played.
I was able to get 3 and 4 for entirely reasonable prices on Amazon. On top of the PC versions I believe they're also both on consoles. I saw one of them while browsing PS2 games at a second hand store.
I have the DVD version of Myst 3; it's a bit temperamental.
But have you guys heard of the 25th anniversary Myst Kickstarter?

I nominated it, i'm tempted to do so again next vote but there are so many games that beat it this time. :(
Wouldn't dare to tell you what to do, but at least it didn't come last. Might be worth another shot.
Maybe that would be a good one to line up with the release of The Fall 2 in February
Oh, Part 2 comes out in Feb ? Thanks, didn't know that :D Yeah, that would be appropriate !
It's on Keith's radar alraedy for sure, I think if it gets to like next year and the Fall hasn't won yet he'll probs play it of his own accord at some point before sequal release.

Oh Atrus yes, it has come!!! :D
they are all on gog now by the way, and soon steam so they claim.
Would have liked Wind Waker HD, or Keith buying a N-3ds but I can gobble down Silent Hill until this is finished.
Had hoped for FFX, but this seems pretty interesting.
Does anyone know why Catherine's actress is not the same?
No, but Catherine is my favorite Myst character and to this day it bugs the heck out of me. I can't get used to it. Nothing against the actress, but she just doesn't fit the character to me.
7:55 to actually start the game
I love you getting sidetracked so easily.... Yes!
Keith, please use a daily build of ResidualVM. The release build has some little bugs like that garbled cutscene audio you noticed.

Damn, I was like "anything but the garbage that South Park is". Thank god, that sure scared me.
First looking at the list, I also was convinced they would pick South Park. I'm really glad to be wrong.
And as we move farther and farther from release, we should expect fewer and fewer people to vote for it.
Dawn Eames I agree with you so much. I was watching the bars and hoping people wouldn't pic SP. SP and its basic fart-joke humor is old and only funny to middle school kids...
No Zelda?
Did memes failed.
The Myst memes were always stronger.
its not even on uplay?
Nope. Ubisoft did nothing with their ownership of Myst 3 and 4, just sitting on it for over a decade. You could only get the games via physical copies. This year Cyan was able to get the rights to the games and re-release the games, so updated version of Myst 3 and 4 are now on Steam and GoG, but that stuff didn't exist when this video series was being recorded.

@@KeithBallardA Oh Joy Another One of Atrus's Never Ending Journals
@@KeithBallardA It kinda bothers me too tbh, I cant understand the "Oh hey there is something I need to do, I guess I'll fuck off then" mindset, I personally prefer to get an idea of wtf is going on first before exploring, since exploring is something that can be done anytime, and doing story stuff generally reduces the chances of screwing yourself over. I'm not saying your 100% wrong in doing what you want to do, I mean, hey its your life, and your channel, do what you want, but I get an anxiety attack wondering whats supposed to be done rather than "screw you game, I do what I want!"
