    Game Description:
Myst IV: Revelation is the fourth installment in the Myst video game series, developed and published by Ubisoft. Revelation was the first game in the series released on a DVD-ROM format; a multiple CD-ROM version was not produced as it would have taken twelve compact discs to fit the data. Like Myst III: Exile, Revelation combines pre-rendered graphics with digital video, but also features real-time 3D effects for added realism.
The plot of Revelation ties up loose ends from the original Myst. The player is summoned by Atrus, a man who creates links to other worlds known as Ages by writing special linking books. Almost twenty years earlier, Atrus' two sons nearly destroyed all of his linking books and were imprisoned; Atrus now wishes to see if his sons' imprisonment has reformed them. The player ends up traveling to each brother's prison, in an effort to recover Atrus' daughter Yeesha from the brothers' plot.
Development of Revelation lasted more than three years; Ubisoft had as many as eighty employees working on the game. Musician Peter Gabriel lent his voice and a song to the game's audio; the original score was written by Exile's composer Jack Wall. Overall, reception to the game was positive; reviewers lauded the impressive visuals, sound, and puzzles. Publications such as Computer Gaming World took issue with the control scheme of the game. Revelation is the last game in the Myst series to use both prerendered backgrounds and full-motion video; the final game in the series, End of Ages, is rendered in real-time throughout.
Myst IV: Revelation is an adventure game in which the player experiences gameplay from the eyes of an unnamed protagonist referred to as the Stranger. Players explore interactive worlds known as Ages by using the mouse or keyboard, solving puzzles and uncovering the game's narrative. Players cannot move freely across each Age; instead, as in the previous games in the Myst series, they travel by clicking set locations called "nodes", where players can rotate their view in any direction. Revelation also features a "Zip" mode, which allows a method of rapidly crossing explored areas by skipping intermediate nodes; areas that can be instantly traveled to are stored as thumbnail representations for rapid movement across Ages.
The mouse cursor helps to provide visual cues for player actions and movement. The cursor appears as a hand that changes depending on what the player is hovering the cursor over. For example, to move in a direction, the cursor changes to point in the intended direction. If players can view an item in greater detail, the cursor changes to a hand holding a magnifying glass. By clicking and dragging the cursor, the player performs actions such as pushing, pulling, and tapping items.
Revelation features several gameplay enhancements that aid puzzle solving and plot progression. Early in the game, players receive a camera, which can be used to take screenshots or pictures of clues. Players can use an on-screen journal to jot down notes instead of having to write down clues as with previous Myst games. Much of the game's story is revealed via flashbacks triggered by an amulet that has the power to relay memories attached to objects. Zip mode, the amulet, the camera, and the journal are available via a menu on the bottom of the game screen.

Atrus continues to be father of the year material.

I appreciate that you had the same reaction as I did to Yeesha going "my brothers believe me." Atrus, WHY are you allowing your sons, who you KNOW are manipulative and do horrible things to people, come in contact with your TINY IMPRESSIONABLE DAUGHTER?!?

I think that Atrus, having never lived in a cool or cold climate, doesn't actually know what fireplaces are normally for. His only childhood example of a fireplace was Ti'ana's puzzle fireplace on Myst, so when he puts in a fireplace, what else would it be than a tiny puzzle room?

    • @draconicchaos
      @draconicchaos 2 года назад +1

Well considering he was born on Earth, as evidenced in readings from Riven, the book of Atrus, and Uru, he knew what a fireplace was. The book of Atrus, if you can find a copy, tells of Gehn leaving Atrus with Ti'ana at the cleft when Keta died during childbirth. He was 14 when Gehn returned to teach him the ways of D'ni.

@@draconicchaos But being born on Earth doesn't convey knowledge automatically; you have to learn it at some point. In those fourteen years at the Cleft, I doubt he traveled far enough on the surface to see a fireplace in person, and I doubt he had very many picture books like Goodnight Moon.

Catherine: I'm trapped between loving my kids and loving my husband.
Me: Uhhh... Shouldn't you be deciding between your sons and ENTIRE WORLDS WORTH OF PEOPLE???

29:48 Tay is the Age you go to in Riven that has the big golf ball on a tree trunk. The Rebel Moiety lived there and it is where the Rivenese were evacuated to at the end of Riven. Presumably some at least are still living there at this point.

Technically this game blew my mind back in the day. I think it's the most advanced 360 degree pre-rendered game ever made, and all in glorious 1024x768 resolution! It's got tons of layers so it can all move independently. The sky, water, flying birds etc are each separate layers. Also so the depth of field effect can work. Those bugs were real-time 3D models though. Compare to a contemporary 3D game like Half-life 2 and this is almost photorealism if it wasn't so fantastical.

The D'ni refer to the practice of writing the Ages as "The Art".

  • @OriionCygnus

"Garohevtee" is a D'ni word. It's actually not used properly here. garo = great, hev = word, tee = suffix meaning pluaralization. "garohevtee" means great words and it's the D'ni word for what is translated in English to "The Art". She should be tracing "the garohevtee"or "a garohev". Cyan created the D'ni stuff and Ubisoft used it.. or tried to anyway. Cyan is kind of insane.

I often get side-tracked while watching your videos, often because you make a reference and I want to check that out. So when you mentionned Infra at 3:35, I got curious and ended up watching the whole serie... 49 episodes later, I'm back to Myst! Wooh, what a side path.

4:40 From what I can gather, Myst IV uses pre-rendered 360° images, then overlays FMV for the characters and real-time 3D rendering for ancillary things like water effects. I'm not sure if the birds and other fauna were FMV or realtime. It pushed pre-rendered graphics to their limit, and then pushed them a bit beyond. I would love to work with the ALIVE engine they developed for the game...

This is the only Myst game I haven't played. Pretty cool that they have a child actress, would have never expected it.

English is that child actor's second language, by the way. She speaks french natively. That's why her english is a little weird.

I believe this game uses Apple's Quicktime VR tech, in combination with other stuff. I think what they are doing is pre-rendering the scenes and making them in to Quicktime VR vids. Every place you stand is another Quicktime VR vid.

To "Cathrihn" from "Aytrus". Phonetically reasonable enough. I'm a little puzzled by "listen and forgive" running in that direction.
Catherine's poor name has been much transformed. Katrán to Catherine to Cathrihn.

I hope that at some point, you’ve discovered that you will be obtaining the necklace for you, and it has memories of the journals’ authors’ reading them.

I'm disappointed Keith did not stick to the plan of finding the journal and finishing what Atrus asked Keith to do. He way too distracted for my taste.

Why did you free the bugs? You jerk.
As for the long transition delays, did you install the full game to your hard drive? It works best with a full install to the fastest drive you have available.
