  • Ten years after the events of Myst and Riven, Atrus and the Stranger meet again. But, as usual, not everything goes entirely smoothly.

    I return from my hiatus with what is probably (actually, make that "definitely") the most requested Let's Play on my channel! I apologize for the long delay, but it was unavoidable due to various real life reasons.

    Hi Sven. I don’t know if you still read comments 9 years after posting these videos, but when I am struggling with life I watch through your let’s plays and it’s like putting on a comfy jumper. Thank you for all the work you put into these let’s plays.

      @@ghdfhsfnfgbadfhsfh They don't have to because nara's not really rock; it's manufactured and can be extruded into any shape they need, like 3D printing.

    It's just my take on it, it's not official. I don't think the stranger could've been involved in the rebuild though as he doesn't appear in the Book of D'ni and more importantly, this is clearly the first time the stranger meets Catherine since Riven, and the first time he visits Tomahna.
    A chance encounter at the first visit to the cleft may seem unlikely, but that was mainly done to keep the story short. :)

      Agreed! Sven is a good player and a great copy-writer! My only criticism in all his work has been that he's a little too "meta", but then I like to be immersed in a story, whether I'm playing or watching someone else play. But I love watching his vids.

  • @Dilandau3000
    @Dilandau3000  11 лет назад +7

    This game is only in 480p. Scaling it up to 720p or 1080p would mean scaling by a non-integer number and would therefore only reduce quality. It would also increase the video size and processing time drastically, for literally no benefit. It will look the same as just displaying this video full screen.
    I upload games in whatever resolution is best for them. This game's native resolution is 640x480, so that's what I upload it as.

    If there could be a school based off of Myst and all the other games Rand and Robin would be principals and Sven would be a professor! As usual Sven well done! Every single Myst series walk through I grow even more impressed.You NEVER disappoint.

  • @Dilandau3000
    @Dilandau3000  11 лет назад +7

    This game is only 640x480. The only way to make it "HD" is to artificially scale it up, which I don't like doing.

  • @Dilandau3000
    @Dilandau3000  11 лет назад +3

    I could do that, but the game would still only be 640x480. You will have to invent a time machine, go back to 1996 (or whenever development on this game started), and ask Presto Studios to make the game in HD. That's the only way you'll get me to upload it that way.

    I haven't read any of the Myst books. Do they take place in between the games, or are they just novelized versions of the games?

    • @Dilandau3000
      @Dilandau3000  9 лет назад +8

      The first novel takes place before the first game, and is about Atrus's youth; it ties heavily into both Myst and Riven. The second novel is set several centuries earlier and details the fall of the D'ni civilization. The third (and last) novel is set in between Riven and Myst 3 and is about Atrus's attempts to rebuild D'ni.

    If I understand correctly, nara combines the properties of diamond and jade (specifically nephrite).
    Diamond is the hardest known mineral, but it is relatively brittle, and if you drop a sufficiently large diamond from a sufficiently great height, it can shatter under its own weight. Conversely, jade (or rather, nephrite) is slightly harder than feldspar, but softer than quartz, and extremely tough.

    Love the intro! Is the ten year gap official, or your own addition? I always thought Catherine was pregnant at the end of Riven (watch their body language), presumably with Yeesha. But of course, even if she was pregnant, she could have miscarried or something, then not gotten pregnant with Yeesha until years later.

    • @Dilandau3000
      @Dilandau3000  3 года назад +2

      The ten year gap is official, and based on the (D'ni) years mentioned in various journals. Canonically, the events of Myst and Riven take place in D'ni year 9462 (1806 on our calendar) and Myst III takes place in 9471 (1815).

    The ideal settings would be native resolution (480p) in YUV 444 to preserve color detail and with a high bitrate to prevent blocking. If the videos were recorded like this and youtube would serve them, then there would be absolutely no reason to upload using a higher resolution than 480p. However, even if you upload a 480p video in this format, youtube will transcode it to lossy YUV 422 and use a low bitrate. Given these constraints, upscaling could indeed produce better-looking results.

    Catherine clearly has no idea what is going on. She states that they moved here after Atrus finished Releshahn, but if that was the case, then when Atrus went to visit J'nanin for inspiration, he would have left behind a Chroma'agana (The age that Atrus and Catherine lived on before Tomahna) linking book. Not Tomahna.

    What I really don't like about this graphical style is how plastic and artificial almost everything looks. Riven looks far more organic. I wonder how that was accomplished.
    It's kinda like comparing Jurassic Park with The Phantom Menace. Jurassic Park looks far more organic and real than anything in The Phantom Menace, and yet it was made 6 years prior.
    Really strange.

    I like this story of yours. Coincidentally, I've been typing a journal for a soon-to-be flash-based game tribute to the Myst series. In short, A mining foreman from 1901 finds a passage into the Great Shaft from his copper mine in Arizona, and three workers follow him. During the Fall, A D'ni inventor named K'nehtis and his wife Moira had escaped to the Age they wrote, 245, and left their book in one of the Eder Tomahnee; when the four humans find this book, the foreman and one of his partners Link, but the second man, as greedy as Sirrus, isn't to be trusted by his foreman. K'nehtis and his wife had linked to Releeshahn and stayed there 50 years prior, but the situation's still not good.

    I really liked the first-person narration at the beginning, as though the Player Character was reading aloud from his journal. One of the fun parts about Myst is that so much is left to interpretation, so each player will form their own story.
    Some of the images at the beginning like the telescope and skeleton I didn't recognize from Myst III. Were these taken from another game like Uru?

    Aha! I was so excited when I saw this! I love the way you structured this video! The introduction is a very nice bridge between the games, and the screen shots are very apt. The detailed explanation of the tapestries was great! I recently finished The Book of D'ni, but haven't yet replayed Exile, so I'm excited to see how much more of Atrus' Releeshahn journal I understand. Can't wait for more!

    Moving somewhere and writing the age are different, it probably took Atrus a while to build a house there. It's also possible Atrus carries a few books around at once, in case he loses a linking book directly to his current home, then he could just use the link in a different age.

    Yay!
    But at the same time, noooo! This is the last one! Though I guess there's the possibility of you LPing Starry Expanse in...10 years maybe.

    Nice to have you back Sven! And Myst III! There's a game I haven't played in a while. Looking forward to seeing how our newest Myst adventure goes (though, the ending has not yet been written).

    Btw Sven, I have always loved the way you commentate the progression of the game as if you were playing it for the first time too :-)
